HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.
Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for
Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,
April 2016, Ghent.

Argentina: AB InBev’s Quilmes brewery to invest 26.9 bln pesos in expansion over the next five years
|
Brewery Cerveceía y Maltería Quilmes — controlled by Leuven, Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev — on August 23 told President Mauricio Macri that it will invest 26.9 billion pesos (1.9 billion dollars) over the next five years in Argentina, Buenos Aires Herald reported.
Quilmes’ representatives explained the investment will go to expand its factories, the installation of a dealcoholizing plant, a new line of barrels and the expansion of its agricultural business for the production of barley and hops.
Another huge bet will entail the expansion of the brewing plant the company has in Acheral, in the northern province of Tucumán, where it will invest 650 million pesos to double the output of bottled products and beer and soft drinks output for the domestic and foreign markets. Inauguration of the plant is scheduled for the coming weeks. As a first step it will mean 500 new direct or indirect jobs.
Meeting with Macri at the Pink House were Carlos Alberto Sicupira, one of the biggest shareholders of AB InBev, Marcio Froes, president of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes Latinoamérica Sur, and Pablo Querol, vice-president of Corporate and Legal Affairs of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes.
Also present were Production Minister Francisco Cabrera, Horacio Reyser, the presidential adviser on

USA: AB InBev and Craft Brew Alliance expand collaboration
|
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (CBA) and Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced on August 23 a series of new commercial agreements that expand and strengthen the companies’ long-term relationship and create new growth opportunities for both companies. The agreements include an amended and extended master distribution agreement, a new contract brewing arrangement, and a new international distribution agreement.
Through the agreements, AB InBev will provide additional support and committed resources to accelerate CBA’s growth strategy, which includes: strengthening its distinctive portfolio of craft brands; maximizing the potential of Kona Brewing Co. as one of the fastest-growing American craft brands; and optimizing CBA’s brewing footprint to drive gross margin expansion and deliver its craft beers to more beer lovers in the U.S. and around the world.
CBA and AB InBev have extended the current fee structure of their existing Master Distributor Agreement for 10 additional years, through 2028. The amended agreement secures CBA’s brands in the industry’s strongest wholesaler network, enabling continued investment in brand growth and strategic partnerships, such as Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cisco Brewers.
Under the terms of a new contract brewing arrangement, CBA and AB InBev will work together to transition up to 300,000 barrels of volume into AB InBev’s

UK: Guinness launches rye pale ale within its Brewers Project range
|
Guinness has extended its Brewers Project range of beers with the launch of Guinness rye pale ale, the latest beer from its brewery at St James’s Gate, Dublin, FoodBev reported on August 22.
Available in the off-trade from September, Guinness rye pale ale brings the unique character of the stout to the world of pale ale, boasting a peppery bite and citrus and grapefruit notes that perfectly balanced with crystal malt to leave a toasted biscuit flavour. It is the latest new beer to be developed at the Open Gate Brewery, the experimental brewery at the heart of Guinness innovation.
The launch provides retailers with the opportunity to tap into the huge premium bottled ale category, which continues to grow ahead of total beer with £19 million year-on-year growth last year, brand owner Diageo said. The 5% ABV pale ale will also capitalise on the success of The Brewers Project portfolio, which has contributed £5.6 million to this total growth.
Peter Simpson, lead brewer for the Open Gate Brewery, commented: “In December a few of us at The Open Gate Brewery got together and made a rye pale ale as a Christmas gift for our friends and families. Everyone liked it so much

Africa: Three firms hired to distribute Heineken products across East Africa continue legal battle against Dutch brewing giant
|
Three firms hired to distribute beer maker Heineken’s products across East Africa want the defense the firm has filed in a distribution dispute struck out, the Daily Nation reported on August 22.
Maxam Ltd, Uganda’s Modern Lane Ltd and Tanzania’s Olepasu Ltd have claimed that Heineken International BV, Heineken Brouwerijen BV and their local arm Heineken East Africa Import, have filed their separate defenses out of the time allocated by court and should not be accommodated.
The trio argues that Heineken has also not provided sufficient reasons for the long delay in complying with the court orders. The court had directed the firm and its local subsidiary to file its defense by June 16, but this was not done until August 11, 2016.
“The three purported amended defenses are in blatant contravention of the mandatory provisions of civil procedure rules. We are, therefore, unable to file any reply as required under the same rules and the three amended defenses should therefore be struck out,” say the distributors through lawyer Philip Nyachoti.
The High Court had earlier this year granted orders stopping Heineken from terminating a multimillion-shilling contract signed with the three companies to distribute the brand in East Africa until the application is heard

South Korea: Oriental Brewery in the grip of labor dispute
|
South Korean brewer Oriental Brewery (OB) has been in the grip of labor dispute. OB’s labor union has gone on a general strike since Aug.16, further exacerbating labor-management dispute, Korea IT Times reported on August 23.
At first blush, the dispute seems to be caused by their disagreement over wage increases. However, some point out that it is an outgrowth of OB’s failure in reflecting the reality of the Korean liquor market after OB changed hands.
Since December last year, OB’s labor union has engaged in collective bargaining with the management more than 30 times to negotiate a pay rise. However, as the negotiations was going nowhere, the labor union decided to down tools.
The labor union claims that the management has set goals too high in order to make incentives elusive, a move that is no different from wage reductions. On the other hand, the management argues that they did not provide incentives because the goals have been attained and their incentive system exists separately from their wage system.
Since leading global brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) bought back OB in 2014, OB has seen few signs of labor-management conflict letting up.
Earlier this year, the labor union filed a complaint with the Ministry

Cambodia: Cambrew’s Sihanoukville brewery workers strike escalates and disrupts production
|
A workers’ strike escalated on August 22 at Cambrew’s Sihanoukville brewery, protesters said, with the company acknowledging that the work stoppage was causing major disruptions, The Cambodia Daily reported.
“The protest has had a big impact on the company’s production,” said Chheng Sopheak, head of human resources at Cambrew, though he could not quantify the cost to the factory’s operations.
The company met with protesters on August 20 and the two sides were on their way to resolving the dispute, Mr. Sopheak said.
Accounts of the work stoppage were conflicting. Mr. Sopheak said 100 protesters had gathered outside the factory in the morning, with numbers dwindling to about 60 by the afternoon. A union representative, however, said there were 600 workers gathered during the peak of the protest on August 22, up from 200 over the weekend.
Ken Mao, a representative of the Cambodian Food and Service Workers Federation, said the workers had a list of demands.
They believe a warehouse manager was wrongly sacked and want him reinstated; they want the plant’s Malaysian general manager, Y.K. Wang, dismissed due to his lack of respect for employees; they are demanding a free meal during every shift for each staff member; and they want the company

World: World total grain output expected to slightly increase in 2016/17
|
IGC’s estimate of world grain production in 2016/17 is 2.046 vs. 2 bln tonnes last year.
According to the analysts, there will be 40 mln tonnes more corn harvested in the USA (in Sept/Oct) and Brazil (only in early 2017). A production plus of 6.5 mln tonnes of wheat in Russia and 5.7 mln tonnes in the U.S. will be compensated by a sharp fall in France. The IGC estimate of 34 (= minus 8.5) mln tonnes of French wheat is higher than recent trade estimates of 30 mln tonnes. However, world stocks of grains and oilseeds will be more than comfortable and leave little room for better markets.
Black Sea wheat and barley exert enormous pressure on world markets, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report.
