HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.
Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for
Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,
April 2016, Ghent.

Vietnam: Vietnam urges Habeco and Sabeco brewers to dilute state ownership
|
Vietnam has urged its major businesses, including the two biggest beer producers Habeco and Sabeco and leading dairy firm Vinamilk, to dilute state ownership. In the private sector, VinaCapital and Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management have joined hands to enable Korean investors to participate in the Vietnam market, DEALSTREETASIA reported on August 31.
Vietnam’s new Prime Minister has announced the intention to publicly list the country’s two largest brewers, Sabeco and Habeco, before the state divests its controlling stakes in these businesses, according to a government report.
The move will assure transparency, said the report, which added that there will be no distinction between domestic or international buyers as the state sells stake in the beverage majors.
However, the government portal also clarified that it will retain the local brands of Habeco and Sabeco, along with dairy product firm Vinamilk, the country’s largest company by market capitalization.
DEALSTREETASIA reported earlier that the Vietnamese industry and trade ministry had planned to list Sabeco on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, after the decision to sell a 53 per cent stake in one tranche, to trim the holding to a minority of 36 per cent.
Nine local and foreign companies have

Thailand: Thai Beverage enjoys frothy rise this year
|
Amid a largely tepid Singapore bourse, Thai Beverage has stood out with its frothy rise this year, attracting investors with its dominance in Thailand's alcohol market and strong earnings growth, the Straits Times reported on August 29.
And while the counter has cooled slightly recently owing to some profit-taking, market watchers still see ThaiBev as a good buy for the long term, as the company continues to achieve a deeper market share and wider regional presence.
Since the start of the year, ThaiBev has gained 48.2 per cent to 99 cents at the last close, easily the best performer of the 30 Straits Times Index component stocks. The next best was Sats, up 28.5 per cent. Overall, the STI has declined 0.87 per cent so far this year.
ThaiBev's surge - part of a gradual build-up since 2012 and far above the initial public offering price of 28 cents - has defied January's stock market volatility and the Brexit-triggered panic in June.
The company - controlled by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi as chairman and his son Thapana as chief executive - is now the fifth largest on the STI, with a market value of S$24.86 billion, behind Singtel, DBS Group Holdings, OCBC and United

Japan & South Korea: Japanese beer becoming increasingly popular in South Korea
|
Japanese beer is becoming increasingly prominent in South Korea, where its popularity is growing mainly among young people due to its deeper flavors and finer beer head than domestic brews, The Youmiuri Shimbun reported on August 29.
Because the main alcoholic drink in South Korea is shochu, a distilled beverage, the overall beer market is not large. However, Japanese beer imports to the country have been continuously increasing and there is significant room for market development due to the drinks’ novelty and good taste.
According to research company Canadean Ltd., the sales volume of beer in South Korea in 2015 was 2.34 million kilolitres — less than half that of Japan. In South Korea, Hite Jinro Co. and Oriental Brewery Co. are the top two beer companies, with a more than 80 percent combined market share.
Imported beer accounts for only about 10 percent of the market. In 2010, Asahi Breweries Ltd. renewed the TV commercials for its major Super Dry brand to promote the beer head and quality of the product, which sells well at restaurants and convenience stores.
Asahi’s sales in 2015 were 2½ times higher than five years before, at 27,000 kilolitres. The company’s more than 20 percent share of the

UK & China: Chinese market now open to British barley
|
UK’s cereal growers are on the verge of a "brave new world" as the Chinese market is now open to exports of barley, AHDB Cereals has said.
This year, the Chinese are looking to import seven million tonnes and the UK could have as much as 150,000 tonnes worth £20 million available.
All the necessary permissions are now in place to give the UK access to mainland China which is a massive and growing market.
Though the harvest has not yet finished there will be a surplus which could find a ready home in the Far East as China requires grain from assured sources.
AHDB Head of Crops Export Trade Development, Rob Burns said: “Our export team worked for years to gain access to the market and now we have opened the doors, it is a market that can be developed.
“We are in a strong position as in previous years we have had about a million tonnes of barley available for export each year.”
Demand for barley in China has been growing fuelled by a large and fast-growing beer market while domestic production has, at the same time, been in decline.

USA: 2016 to be a record year for US hop farmers
|
The 2016 hop harvest season is upon us and according to the experts, this is going to be a record year, with the total amount of acreage farmers dedicated to hops in 2016 up 17 percent and harvest yields expected to range between average and exceptional. Still, the hop industry looks at the situation with as much caution as they do exuberance, according to information published by Hop Growers of America.
Following last year’s dismally dry growing seasons in both the U.S. and Europe, brewers without hop contracts struggled to get their hands on those precious, popular hop varieties that beer drinkers crave. Hopefully this year’s strong crop helps remedy that situation. As usual, breweries with hop contracts should not be affected either way.
Hop contracts, which are long-term agreements between hop suppliers and breweries, guarantee (in theory at least) that breweries will get all the hops and the particular varieties they need at an established price, protecting breweries from inevitable market fluctuations and helping farmers plan for the future. Among other things, hop contracts help farmers secure the loans needed to expand their hop acreage. Still, in private conversations, some brewers will tell you they feel hogtied and held hostage by
