HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.
Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for
Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,
April 2016, Ghent.

Romania: Brewer URBB reports 25% increase in sales in H1
|
URBB, the company selling Tuborg, Carlsberg, Skol and Holsten beer brands in Romania, saw a 25% increase in its sales in the first half of this year, Romania-Insider.com reported on September 2.
The growth was due to the VAT reduction, an increase in the number of tourists, and a “not so rainy summer”, said Shachar Shaine, URBB president, reports local Wall-street.ro. In July and August, the URBB factory in Pantelimon near Bucharest operated non-stop.
The company’s turnover was over EUR 48 million in the first half of the year. The profit went up by 50% to EUR 1.8 million. The brand which saw the highest growth in sales was Tuborg, with an increase of 20% in the first eight months of the year.
The company’s exports rose by 64%. URBB now sells abroad about 10% of its production.

UK: Carlsberg’s Birrificio Angelo Poretti brand enjoys record sales growth this year
|
Italian beer brand Birrificio Angelo Poretti has enjoyed a record sales growth in 2016, shooting up 150% to date, The Drinks Business reported on September 2.
The brand is owned by Carlsberg, and their UK arm has made the beer its key focal point following a heavy round of investment that saw a sampling campaign launched to drive brand awareness and engage with consumers on a nationwide level – something they are now reaping the benefits for.
Part of the campaign saw the beer being sampled from the back of an authentic Italian Piaggio van that had been converted into a bar with its own tap. The van was taken on a tour of the UK, which it is still doing, and will continue to do so until early 2017.
Carlsberg UK’s vice head of marketing, Liam Newton, said: ”Today, people have a much richer knowledge of and are far more excited about international beers, a movement that has largely been led by the Italian lager category.
“Italian culture is a prominent trend within the UK at the moment – from food and drink to heritage – so it’s a great time to create a platform from which beer drinkers can discover the great
