ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

USA: AB InBev’s acquisition of Virigina-based craft brewery Devils Backbone gets approval by Department of Justice
|
The acquisition of Virginia-based Devils Backbone by Anheuser-Busch InBev has gotten approval from the U.S. Department of Justice, newsplex.com reported on September 7.
The DOJ's Antitrust Division had opened an investigation into the acquisition, but has now decided to close that investigation.
According to a statement from Deputy Assistant Attorney General Juan Arteaga, AB InBev has agreed to concessions regarding the acquisition of SABMiller, which has reduced fears of less competition in the field.
Devils Backbone will be added to AB InBev's High End craft beer division.

USA, WY: Buffalo Creek Brewery proposing to open next spring in Long Grove
|
For years, friends have been challenging Michael Marr to brew special beers for them. Most recently, a guy he knows wanted a beer that tasted like chocolate and bacon.
And the recipe that Marr came up with may make the menu of the microbrewery he is proposing to open next spring in Long Grove, Chicago Tribune reported on September 2.
Marr is working through the permitting process at Long Grove Village Hall to open Buffalo Creek Brewery, which could occupy the vacant building at 350 Old McHenry Road.
"I decided I wanted to do something new," Marr said.
He said he found the right location to establish his craft brewery, which would be the only active brewery in Long Grove if village officials endorse his proposal.
Located on the side of the actual Buffalo Creek, the 11,000-square-foot building features a rotunda on one end, a big backyard and an elevated deck.
"All the pieces are starting to come together," Marr said.
Presently working in the financial industry, the Vernon Hills resident has been clearing out time to turn his beer-brewing hobby of 14 years into a full-time occupation.

Canada, BC: Coast Mountain Brewing opened by a veteran of BC craft brewing in Whistler
|
A new brewery and taproom headed up by a veteran of BC’s craft brewing scene has opened its doors in the Function Junction area of Whistler, Canadian Beer News reported on September 2.
Coast Mountain Brewing has been founded by Kevin Winter, a brewer who has previously worked at Mission Springs Brewing and Whistler Brewing.
Located in a 2,300 square foot facility at 1212 Alpha Lake Road, Coast Mountain features a brewhouse with an annual production capacity of 170,000 litres, and a tasting bar and retail store.
In addition to Coast Mountain beers, the bar currently includes guest taps from other BC breweries including Steel & Oak and Dageraad.

USA, MA: River Styx Brewing preparing to open in Ashburnham later this year
|
Like many parents, Ashburnham residents Scott and Jackie Cullen had "empty-nester syndrome" when their daughter went to college a few years ago.
Unlike most parents, though, they filled their empty nest with yeast, malt, hops and brewing equipment, Sentinel & Enterprise reported on September 9.
The Cullens are now a professional husband-and-wife brewing team and owners of River Styx Brewing. Together, they've created nine beers, and recently leased space at 166 Boulder Drive, Ashburnham to open a brewery and taproom later this year.
Jackie said she handles most of the marketing, while Scott is head brewer, and "a genius when it comes to the recipes."
Most of the couple's beers are India Pale Ales (IPAs) or stouts, Scott said.
"That's what we like to drink, so that's what we make," he said.
They've loved craft beer for years, and about eight years ago started making home brews in their kitchen. They spent a lot of time traveling around the country to different breweries and were told by head brewers that if they were serious about opening a brewery, they needed to "repeat and refine" recipes rather than continuing to try new ones.

USA, CO: Sojourner's Brewing Project to be launched by two local brewers in Denver in January
|
Two Denver brewers, Andrew Moore and Benjamin Gettinger will open Sojourner's Brewing Project in January, 2017, BusinessDen reported.
The coming attraction will be located in a 2,400 square foot former laundromat and convenience store space at 925 W. Eighth Avenue, near the Santa Fe Art District in Denver.
Moore, who will serve as head brewer, will have a seven-barrel brewing system, plus fermenters capable of holding about 42 barrels of beer and 56 barrels of bright tank to work with. The 30 year old currently works at 105 Brewing Co. in Castle Rock and has previous work experience at Castle Rock Home Brew Supply and Boulder Beer Co.
Sojourner's Brewing Project hopes to start construction on the space in October and start brewing beer in December. The plan is to open to the public in January 2017 with 12 to 16 beers on tap, including some unique recipes with ingredients like basil, garlic, dates and apricots.

USA, TX: Ribbon cutting for Neches Brewing Company set for September 8
|
Port Neches Avenue is getting a little bit hipper with the addition of Neches Brewing Company, The Port Arthur News reported on September 3.
The soon-to-open brewpub at 1108 Port Neches Ave. has an upbeat feel with colorful distressed fence wood on one wall while surfboards are hung at intervals on an opposite wall. Old lobster buoys were customized and shine light onto the seating area.
Owners Tyler Blount and David Pool did their research and now, after a two-year journey of designs, recipes, licensing, permits, crowdfunding and hard work, Neches Brewing Company is set to open.
A ribbon cutting is set for 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 and the business will officially open Sept. 11.
Blount and Pool seem to have cornered a market that is booming in other, much larger cities. Beaumont’s second Craft Beer Fest is scheduled for late September while the three-day annual BrewMaster’s Craft Beer Festival is taking place over the Labor Day weekend in Galveston. The city of Austin, commonly thought of as a hub for new trends, has about 30 breweries and brewpubs and Houston is stocked with them as well.

USA, GA: Slowdown Brewing Company to become Lawrenceville’s first-ever beer brewery
|
The business that could potentially become Lawrenceville’s first-ever beer brewery started with a brew of a different sort, Gwinnettdailypost.com reported on September 3.
Marty Mazzawi, who comes from a family of Gwinnett County dentists and is also a dentist, was running a coffee shop with its own special coffee brew in North Carolina. Meanwhile, his brother-in-law, John Reynolds, is a craft beer and home brewing fan. The family even gave him a home brewing kit for Christmas one year.
So Reynolds suggested bringing the two different types of brews together in one drink.
“He’s been brewing his own beers for years so he said, ‘You should try getting a brewery to turn your coffee into a beer,’” Mazzawi recalled. “I just said, ‘Why don’t we just do it ourselves?’”
That idea lead to the formation of Slowdown Brewing Company, which Mazzawi and Reynolds hope to open next to the old train depot in downtown Lawrenceville.
The Lawrenceville City Council will decide at a public hearing on September 7 whether to approve a zoning change to allow the brewery’s owners to operate in an approximately 106-year-old building on North Clayton Street.

USA, AL: Green Bus Brewing opens up in Downtown Huntsville
|
Fans of craft beer can rejoice - there's a new brewery that's opened up in the heart of Downtown Huntsville, whnt.com reported on September 6.
Even on a sleepy Labor Day afternoon, several curious customers poked their head into 206 Eustis Avenue. “To me, it’s a great addition to what’s been going on here," says Sherri Stroud, a customer at Green Bus Brewing.
Stroud says she's been keeping an eye out for the open sign to pop up in their window, “We’ve been watching it in the development process since the winter so we’re really excited and decided to stop by," she says.
The Green Bus, fittingly, started in Jason Sledd's garage. “I gradually got into the hobby thinking it’d be something fun to do on the side and then it just blew up. I went all in and started to develop my own recipes," he says.
Jason's other obsession was the inspiration for the name. “Been a Volkswagen fan longer than I’ve been a beer fan. So over the years I’ve had several [VW's] but my current one is a 1972 green bus," says Sledd.

USA, OH: R. Shea Brewing Co. to open separate 30-barrel production brewery
|
R. Shea Brewing Co. is ready to make a big leap, Ohio.com reported on September 6.
The Akron nanobrewery, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary this week, plans to open a separate 30-barrel production brewery.
Founder Ron Shea says he needs to make more beer.
“I have told many bars and stores that I don’t have beer for them as we barely have beer for us,” he wrote on Facebook. “I have told distributors that I have no beer for them either. That needs to change.”
Shea is scouting potential locations in Akron and the project is in its infancy.
The original site at 1662 Merriman Road will remain and become the research and development brewery. That site is expanding by 1,000 square feet so Shea can add barrel aging space, an office and storage.
Shea, who couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, provided no specific financial numbers or timeline in his Facebook post for when he hopes the production brewery will be open.

UK: Molson Coors declares interest in acquisitions in Scotland’s growing craft beer sector
|
The Scottish arm of North American brewing giant Molson Coors has declared it is open to making acquisitions in the country’s rapidly growing craft beer sector, as it highlighted a boost from two major supply deals with customers in Scotland, The Herald reported on September 5.
The brewer has a track record of acquiring promising craft and real ale brewers, having snapped up Cornwall-based Sharp’s in 2011 and Cork’s Franciscan Well in 2013.
Hugo Mills, head of Molson Coors Scotland, believes the rise of craft and cask beer mirrors consumers’ increasing demand for more niche and local products. And he said the company would “absolutely” consider doing deals in Scotland if the right opportunity arose.
Mr Mills said: “Would we like to enter into that arena for Scotland? Yes, we absolutely would, for no other reason than to reinforce our own commitment to the Scottish marketplace. It wouldn’t have a material difference to our own profitability or commercial set-up. We would rather probably do it because we’d like to be encouraging and supportive of the development of some cracking small craft brewers.
“So if the right opportunity presented itself then yes, we would certainly consider it.”

Ireland: Number of craft breweries more than quadrupled since 2012
|
The number of microbreweries in Ireland has more than quadrupled since 2012, according to a new study that estimates turnover in the sector will rise by close to 50 per cent this year, the Irish Times reported on September 6.
The report, which was commissioned on behalf of Bord Bia to coincide with the sixth annual Irish Craft Beer Festival taking place at the RDS in Dublin later this week, shows there are currently 90 microbreweries operating in Ireland. Of these, 62 are producing beer on their own premises, with the remainder marketing and selling products produced on their behalf by other breweries.
Total turnover of craft beer producers was estimated at €23 million two years ago. Revenue of €40 million was recorded for 2015, with a projected turnover of €59 million for 2016.
Between 2011 and 2015, the output of production microbreweries rose by more than 415 per cent to reach 134,000 hectolitres (hl) last year. This marks a 56 per cent increase versus 2014’s figure of 86,000 hl.
Capacity expansion continues apace, and that coupled with the influx of new breweries, is expected to lead to output in the region of 197,000hl, according to the report.

Germany: Craft beers blazing a trail in Germany’s big cities
|
German brewers pride themselves on the 500-year-old purity law which states that only water, malt, hops and yeast can be used in their beers. But craft beer fans argue that those beers, pure or not, lack flavor and character, Deutsche Welle reported on September 5.
Exact sales figures are hard to come by, but craft beers are definitely blazing a trail into the hippest parts of big cities like Hamburg or Berlin. There are craft beer bars, stores and tastings. Many supermarkets now have aisles dedicated to smaller breweries. Craft beer festivals bring in thousands of people and many new brewers are opening their doors.
Simon Siemsglüss set up the tiny Buddelship Brewery - currently with a total staff of three - in Hamburg two years ago. He says that over the past two decades, the overall consumption of German beer has dropped because people are bored by the big brands. Craft beer, he says, offers a whole new experience.

Chile: Compania Cervecerias Unidas reports Q2 profit of $9.3 mln
|
Compania Cervecerias Unidas (CCU) on September 6 reported second-quarter profit of $9.3 million.
On a per-share basis, the Santiago, Chile-based company said it had net income of 5 cents.
The company posted revenue of $454.8 million in the period.
Cervecerias Unidas shares have risen roughly 1 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on September 6, shares hit $21.84, a climb of slightly more than 1 percent in the last 12 months.

South Korea’s Hite Jinro seeks to expand its presence in Vietnam to make the country a gateway to the South East Asian market and strive to achieve 530 billion won ($475 million) in overseas sales by 2024, according to the company’s long-term outline, pulse.co.kr reported on September 5.
“We will develop tailored marketing solutions and strengthen our sales network to win the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese consumers with our main products Jinro soju and Hite beer,” the company’s chief executive officer Kim In-kyu said at a ceremony held to announce its future vision in Hanoi, Vietnam on August 29.
The company is targeting Vietnam where the Korean pop culture is immensely popular and consumers have stomach for strong liquor. It has launched Chamisul Classic soju that contains 19.9 percent alcohol and has a shrink-cap exclusively for the market. Soju is a clear, distilled spirit with high alcohol content, typically made from rice or barley, that is the most consumed alcohol beverage in Korea.
The company aims to increase its share from the current 1 percent to 7 percent by 2020 in the Vietnamese distilled liquor market that has grown more than 17 percent over the past five years.

Thailand: ThaiBev’s vice-president refuses to confirm company interest in acquiring Vietnam government’s stake in Sabeco
|
Thai Beverage Plc (ThaiBev), the country's biggest drinks company, says it is ready to pursue mergers and acquisitions on the back of its financial strength.
ThaiBev has been mentioned by Euromonitor as one of three companies showing an interest in buying a major stake in Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corporation.
The Vietnamese government wants to divest of its 89.59% stake in Saigon Beer for $1.8 billion in auctions this year and next, along with its 82% stake in Hanoi Beer Alcohol and Beverage Corporation for $404 million, according to a state-run news website.
ThaiBev vice-president Sithichai Chaikriangkrai refused to confirm whether ThaiBev is interested in Saigon Beer, Bangkok Post reported on September 3.

Fitch Ratings assigned ThaiBev an initial long-term issuer default rating of BBB and a national long-term rating of AA+ with a stable outlook.
The company's ratings were given based on ThaiBev's strength as the leading drinks company in Thailand with a solid distribution network.

Cho Kil-soo, president and CEO of Diageo Korea has pledged to make whisky the go-to drink for Korean millennials, perhaps shoving aside the long-reigning dominance of soju, Korea JoongAng Daily reported on September 05.
The Korean operation of Diageo, the world’s largest alcoholic beverage manufacturer, is best known for distributing Johnnie Walker and Windsor, among others, and currently leads the local whisky market.
“People in their 20s and 30s haven’t had their own go-to drink for quite a long time,” said Cho at a press meeting held Friday in Fukuoka, Japan.
“Soju has been the most popular alternative choice but that is because it has been the cheapest and most widely distributed option out there. I don’t think soju can be the drink that represents the millennial generation. We will vie to take the spot by trying out new marketing strategies and innovations in our products.”
In order to do that, Cho, who also oversees the British liquor company’s business in Japan, said that taking a look at Japan’s vibrant whisky culture - as seen by the highball, a mixture of whisky with water or soda and the various bars dedicated to the mixed drink - is necessary.

India: Vijay Mallya to continue as chairman of United Breweries Ltd, company says

United Breweries Ltd (UBL), India's largest beer producer, said it supports Vijay Mallya in continuing as the chairman of the company despite the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issuing its second attachment order of property worth about Rs 6,630 crore against him, Times of India reported on September 7.
The backing comes in the wake of reports that Mallya would lose his position as chairman after the seizure of his shares in UBL by ED. The company said as of now, the ED had "not attached" any properties and shares of UBL and Mallya is not disqualified to be the chairman of the company.
"We have looked at every aspect very carefully after Mallya was declared a wilful defaulter. There are no adverse conditions imposed by any statute which debars Mallya from holding a director's position in a listed entity," director Yogendra Pal Chugh, who chaired the company's AGM in the absence of Mallya, said on September 7.
Earlier this week, the agency seized Mallya's farmhouse, flats and FDs in connection with the money laundering case against him and his associates, where the liquor baron has been accused of allegedly transferring money from various UB Group entities to now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.
