POLYPHENOL PROFILES OF DIFFERENT
HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON
BEER FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
A Japanese research team investigated the different
polyphenol profiles of the varieties Hallertau Mittelfrueh,
Hallertau Tradition, Saazer, Tettnanger, Perle and
Cascade. Analysing a range of different polyphenol
monomers, they found that the classic European land
varieties have more proanthocyanidin whereas the
others had more flavonones and prenylflavonoids.
These different profiles showed a flavor difference
in the brewed beers in regards to sweetness and
astringency. A strong correlation to the genetic
heritage was also visible. The researchers found that
proanthyocyanidin correlates with the fullness of beer
while the content of flavonone and prenylflavonoid
correlates with the intensity of astringency.

different hop varieties, poster presentation 129 at the World Brewing Congress.

|
SABMiller PLC on October 4 said the High Court of Justice in England and Wales has sanctioned the scheme of arrangement by which the acquisition of SABMiller by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA is being implemented.
SABMiller said it is expected that the UK scheme effective time will be at or around 1815BST on October 4.
AB InBev also released a statement saying it welcomes the announcement by SABMiller, adding that SABMiller's shares will be suspended from trading at 0730 BST on October 5.
Belgian-American AB InBev is buying Anglo-South African SABMiller for GBP79.0 billion, in a deal approved by the shareholders of both companies last week.
Shares in SABMiller were flat at 4,496.50 pence on October 4 afternoon.

USA: Constellation Brands Q2 sales and profit higher than Wall Street forecasts
|
Constellation Brands — the alcohol company behind beer names like Corona Extra and Modelo Negra — released its second quarter earnings report on October 5, revealing sales and profit that were higher than what Wall Street expected due in no small part to strength in its beer segment.
Second quarter revenue came in at $2.02 billion, up from the $1.96 billion consensus estimate and a 17% improvement over sales reported this time last year. Net income for the quarter came in at $358.9 million, up from $302.4 million in the prior-year period and resulting in earnings of $1.77 per share. This earnings per share figure marks a 13% increase over earnings reported in the year-ago quarter and a 12-cent per share improvement over what Wall Street was expecting to see.
Constellation executives attributed these results to a 20% increase in net beer sales and a 12% increase in wine and spirits net sales. While the November 2015 acquisition of Ballast Point helped Constellation with its year-over-year beer sales comparisons, the company’s shipment volume excluding Ballast Point beer grew 13.3% year-over-year, and Corona Extra and Modelo Especial sales benefited from a boosted marketing effort as well as consumer demand.

Russia: Heineken to halt production at its plant in Kaliningrad
|
Heineken, the world's third-largest brewer, said on October 5 it would halt production at its plant in Kaliningrad in Russia from Jan. 1, 2017, due to a steady decline in Russia's beer market.
The decision to close the brewery in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, is "a forced measure" and was taken after an analysis of Russia's beer market which has been in decline for the past eight years, Heineken said.
"In the last seven years large brewers have been forced to shut down 11 breweries across Russia," it said.

Nigeria: Diageo scraps plans to lift stake in Guinness Nigeria due to tough conditions
|
Diageo has scrapped plans to lift its stake in Guinness Nigeria due to tough conditions in one of its biggest markets for the world-famous stout, the drinks company said on October 5.
The decision by Diageo, which makes Johnnie Walker Scotch and Smirnoff vodka, is another blow to Africa's biggest economy which is headed for its first full-year recession in quarter of a century following a plunge in oil prices.
Diageo said last year it planned to buy 15.7 percent of Guinness Nigeria for up to 41.37 billion naira, which would have taken Diageo's stake to 70 percent.
While the naira has since slumped after the central bank lifted a currency peg in June, Guinness Nigeria shares have also fallen to trade well below the price Diageo offered last year.
The company said on October 5 it would not proceed with the offer, choosing instead to focus its resources on continuing to support Guinness Nigeria.
Last month, Diageo granted Guinness Nigeria a $95 million loan facility to help it cope with dollar shortages. The Nigerian subsidiary has only used $30 million so far.
Limited access to foreign currency has contributed to some businesses pulling back from Nigeria due to difficulties repatriating income. International carriers United and

Vietnam: Listings by Vietnam’s top brewers could be delayed until Q1 2017
|
Listings by Vietnamese brewers Sabeco and Habeco could be delayed until the first quarter of 2017, a minister said, due to the completion of formalities and talks with existing investor Carlsberg, Reuters reported on October 5.
After the listings the government is expected to sell its stakes in the country's biggest brewers, ultimately raising $2.2 billion as it loosens its tight grip over one of Asia's most sought-after beer markets.
The brewers' share debuts were originally scheduled by the end of 2016.
It takes 12 to 14 weeks for a Vietnamese company to complete all the requirements for listing, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Hoang Quoc Vuong told a news briefing broadcast live by the government's website on October 4.
"The possibility for these two firms to make a share listing in 2016 is difficult," Vuong said in the broadcast.
"But their listings, if (there is) no delay, will be within the first quarter of 2017," he said. He gave no specific dates.
Hanoi-based Habeco, 81.79 percent owned by the government and which brews Bia Ha Noi beer, has also been solving "some pending issues" with Danish brewer Carlsberg, its strategic investor, and the process is taking much time, he said.
Vietnam is Asia's third-largest beer drinker

USA: Constellation Brands buys craft whiskey maker High West Distillery
|
Constellation Brands Inc. has acquired craft whiskey maker High West Distillery in a roughly $160 million deal that expands the alcohol company’s business into the fast-growing bourbon and rye categories, Wine Business reported on October 5.
Utah-based High West has grown double-digits annually over the past three years and now sells about 70,000 nine-liter cases annually. Though it remains a small competitor in the American whiskey category, it has become a favorite among aficionados for its distinctive, high-price styles like Bourye, a limited edition blend of sweeter bourbon and spicier rye whiskeys that sells for more than $75 a bottle.
Acquiring the brand fits Constellation’s strategy of increasing its focus on premium alcohol products in the U.S. It is the third such deal over the past year from Constellation, which also acquired luxury winemaker Prisoner Wine Co. and craft brewer Ballast Point.
The deal signals Constellation’s interest in building out its liquor portfolio, which currently includes Svedka Vodka, Black Velvet Canadian whisky and Casa Noble Tequila. The bulk of its revenue comes from its Mexican beer brands Corona Extra and Modelo and wine brands like Robert Mondavi and Clos du Bois.
“This (acquisition) is foundational for us to build a truly significant craft spirits
