POLYPHENOL PROFILES OF DIFFERENT
HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON
BEER FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
A Japanese research team investigated the different
polyphenol profiles of the varieties Hallertau Mittelfrueh,
Hallertau Tradition, Saazer, Tettnanger, Perle and
Cascade. Analysing a range of different polyphenol
monomers, they found that the classic European land
varieties have more proanthocyanidin whereas the
others had more flavonones and prenylflavonoids.
These different profiles showed a flavor difference
in the brewed beers in regards to sweetness and
astringency. A strong correlation to the genetic
heritage was also visible. The researchers found that
proanthyocyanidin correlates with the fullness of beer
while the content of flavonone and prenylflavonoid
correlates with the intensity of astringency.

different hop varieties, poster presentation 129 at the World Brewing Congress.

USA: US biggest craft brewer D.G. Yuengling & Son voices opposition to pending AB InBev, SABMiller merger
|
D.G. Yuengling & Son, the US largest craft brewer, is voicing opposition to the pending $103 billion merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller PLC, which is expected to close on October, 11, St. Louis Business Journal reported on October 7.
Pottsfield, Pennsylvania-based Yuengling wrote a letter to the U.S. Justice Department this week opposing the agreement that cleared the way for the deal to close, The Morning Call reports.
As part of its agreement with the Justice Department, AB InBev agreed to divest SABMiller's entire U.S. business, including its ownership interest in MillerCoors, and to refrain from limiting the ability and incentives of independent beer distributors to sell and promote the beers of its rivals. However, in its letter to the Justice Department, Yuengling claims the agreement doesn't do enough to limit the merged entity's influence on beer distribution channels in the U.S.
"Yuengling considers recent events and the proposed merger as one of the biggest threats to its existence, short of a second round of Prohibition," the company said in the letter.
Yuengling claims AB InBev has fought the craft brewer's expansion into some areas such as Mississippi by putting pressure on distributors who are dependent on AB InBev for much of their

USA, WI: Like Minds Brewing Co. back in Milwaukee
|
After a long and complicated journey, Like Minds Brewing Co. is back in Milwaukee and now open for business on the city's east side, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on October 5.
"It means a lot to us to be back in Milwaukee and now brewing beer in our home state again," said Justin Aprahamian, the co-owner and brewer.
When Aprahamian, who also is co-owner and executive chef at Sanford Restaurant, wanted to open a new brewery and restaurant with Like Minds co-owner John Lavelle, he was forced to move the brewery outside the state of Wisconsin to Chicago due to complications involving the retail liquor license he had at Sanford.
In spring of 2015, he was told by the state Department of Revenue that he couldn't open the brewery in Milwaukee.
After working with state Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield), who, Aprahamian said, "put him in front of the right people," he was told there is "no reason to leave the state." Soon thereafter, the complications were cleared up, and Aprahamian set on a path toward brewing beer in Milwaukee.
What he found is that, because beer is only a small percentage of total sales at Sanford, he was able to get an exemption to

USA, OH: FigLeaf Brewing Co. to hold grand opening on October 8
|
FigLeaf Brewing Co. in Middletown, OH will open this Saturday, October 8, with a grand opening from noon to midnight, Cincinnati.com reported on October 4.
The brewery is in a new 8,400-square-foot building at 3387 Cincinnati-Dayton Road. That includes a 2,000-square-foot tap room and a 1,400-square-foot patio, to which the owners are adding an awning and enclosing for year-round use.
Those owners are Brian Yavorsky, a long-time home brewer who helped found Star City Brewing in Miamisburg in 2013; head brewer Jeff Fortney, who previously brewed at Warped Wing in Dayton; assistant brewer Andy Allgeyer, a home brewer who has also worked in craft retail; and Rich and Tasha Brown.
Yavorsky said the brewery won't necessarily have flagship beers.
"We want to continually evolve what we're doing," he said. "We think that by continuously innovating, people will keep coming back to try new things."
At the opening, Fig Leaf will offer four beers: A red saison, imperial brown porter, basmati rice cream ale and an IPA. Yavorsky said they hope to quickly grow their offerings to 10 and possibly expand to fill all 20 taps with their brews.
They'll self-distribute to local bars and restaurants, and they hope to start packaging their product within a year

USA, OK: City of McAlester awarded $1 mln grant for a brewery project
|
The Oklahoma Department of Commerce has awarded the city of McAlester a $1 million grant for a brewery project at the Steven Taylor Industrial Park, Mcalester News Capital reported on October 4.
City councillors are tentatively expected to vote whether to approve and accept the $1 million grant during the October 11 regular meeting of the McAlester City Council. Since city councillors previously voted to authorize the Department of Commerce grant application in August, it’s expected to pass if the measure comes before the council on October 11.
It’s the next step in a public/private partnership between the Krebs Brewing Company and the city of McAlester. The entire deal remained contingent upon the Department of Commerce approving the $1 million Community Development Block Grant-Economic Development Incentive Grant through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
“I think it’s a great project,” McAlester Community and Economic Development Director Leroy Alsup said on October 3. “It’s a great fit for our community and an example of how we can work with our existing business and industry to assist them with their expansion plans.”
Krebs Brewing Company President Zach Prichard also expressed enthusiasm over the grant’s approval.
“We’ve been working on it a long time,” Prichard said. “I’m happy to

USA, OH: Streetside Brewery now open in Cincinnati
|
Streetside Brewery is now open in Cincinnati’s Columbia Tusculum, Cincinnati.com reported on October 5.
The brewery and taproom, located at 4003 Eastern Ave., currently has limited hours, but will go to its regular schedule after its grand opening celebration on October 7.
Brian and Kathie Hickey and their son, Garrett Hickey, have been planning to open the brewery for more than two years. They built a new 5,000-square-foot building on the site of the former East End Café, which operated as a live music bar from 1887 until 2010, when it was heavily damaged by fire.
The new building includes a 2,000-square-foot taproom with seating for 68 inside and about 25 more outside. With a concrete bar, reclaimed redwood tables, TVs and garage doors that open to the outside, Kathie Hickey describes Streetside as "comfy industrial."
A rail overlooks the brewery, which sits at a lower elevation than the taproom. With its 15-barrel brewing system, the brewery's production capacity is about 3,000 barrels per year. The Hickeys expect to make about 800 during their first year.
To start, Streetside will serve six of its own beers: an ESB (English-style pale ale) with apricot, an imperial porter, a pale ale, an IPA, a green tea honey

USA, CT: Broad Brook Brewing Company to build a larger facility in Suffield
|
A popular thirst-quenching spot in a busy strip mall area in East Windsor plans to uproot and move across the river into Suffield, the Journal Inquirer reported.
The Broad Brook Brewing Company at 2 North Road has filed an application with the town of Suffield to build a larger facility in the Mach One Industrial Park, near Bradley International Airport.
In its paperwork, the owners of the brewery, which opened just over three years ago in Oct. 2013, cited a desire for expansion as its reasoning for relocation.

USA, MD: Full Tilt Brewing to open its own brewpub in Towson
|
Contracting brewing at Peabody Heights Brewery in Waverly was always going to be a stepping stone for Full Tilt Brewing, Baltimore Business Journal reported on October 5.
Cousins and co-owners Nick Fertig and Dan Baumiller started Full Tilt in late 2012 and distribute beer throughout the mid-Atlantic. With four years to build up a following, the two are ready to expand the brand further with a new brew pub in Towson.
Full Tilt has signed a letter of intent to lease out about 10,000 square feet of space in a former police station at 308 Washington Ave., in Towson. Fertig said they have a written financing proposal from a bank to cover about half the cost and are looking for equity investors during an investor presentation Oct. 13 at the location.
"Contract brewing was a good way to get into the industry," Fertig said. "We wanted to get our foot in the door and build up some recognition around town and now we are ready to get our own location."
While the brew pub will not serve as a full brewery — Fertig said they will still contract brew out of Peabody Heights — it is the first step in the long-term plan of

World: Budweiser rated the most powerful alcohol brand in the world
|
Diageo's Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff have continued their slide down a list of the world's most valuable brands.
The whisky and vodka were the worst alcohol performers on Interbrand's Best Global Brands Report 2016, which lists the top 100 brands by estimated worth. Johnnie Walker slipped to 95th spot with a 5% value drop to US$4.3 bln while Smirnoff was 96th, after a 4% fall to $4.2 bln.
According to the annual Interbrand rankings, both brands peaked in value in 2014 but have decreased over the past two years. Last year, Johnnie Walker was 92nd and Smirnoff 94th.
The only other spirits brand on the list was Brown-Forman's Jack Daniel's, which boosted value by 1% to $5.2 bln and claimed 85th position.
Anheuser-Busch InBev's Budweiser was rated the most powerful alcohol brand as it increased estimated value by 8% to $15.1 bln. It was the fourth-straight increase for the beer, which was ranked 30th on the list.
AB InBev's Corona Extra, which is owned in the US by Constellation Brands, was in 93rd spot, up 1% to $4.5 bln. Heineken's namesake lager was at 87th position after a 6% value increase to $5.1 bln. LVMH's Moet & Chandon Champagne was flat at $4.2 bln and

India: Beer expected to outsell hard drinks for the first time
|
For the first time, beer will outsell hard drinks in India this year, according to data from market research firm Euromonitor.
While beer sales volumes are forecast to grow higher at an average 5.7% between 2015 and 2020, the growth in spirits as a category will be less than 2%, Euromonitor analysts believe.
Expanding middle class, growth in social drinking, and the shift away from hard liquor due to health concerns are the main drivers of growth in beer consumption, according to Euromonitor International.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria says Diageo’s decision not to increase stake will not have negative impact on the firm
|
Guinness Nigeria has said Diageo’s decision to stop its earlier offer to increase its equity stake in the firm will not have any negative impact on the firm or its shareholders, naija247news.com reported.
On September 9, Diageo, acting through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Guinness Overseas Limited, had announced its intention to increase its equity stake in Guinness Nigeria Plc to 70 per cent from the current 54.3 per cent and maintain the company’s listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
Reuters had reported that Diageo said last year that it planned to buy 15.7 per cent of Guinness Nigeria for up to N41.37bn.
However, three weeks after the potential offer was made, in a memo dated October 4, Guinness announced that Diageo would not proceed with the offer.
Diageo cited challenging market conditions in Nigeria over the past 12 months as reason for its decision to renege on the offer, adding that it proposed to focus its resources on continued support for Guinness Nigeria.
Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists on October 5, the Director of Corporate Affairs and Company Secretary, Guinness Nigeria, Mr. Sesan Sobowole, said the decision would not affect Guinness Nigeria negatively.
He said if Diageo had gone ahead to acquire more shares, it
