HOW DOES THE TEMPERATURE AND
HOP AMOUNT INFLUENCE FLAVOUR
EXTRACTION DURING DRY HOPPING?
ABSTRACT
This was one of the questions that was looked into
when our Barth team conducted these small-scale dry
hopping experiments. Applying the temperatures 0°C,
13°C and 20°C with inline GC-measurements of 14
hop aroma components, it was found that for most of
the components a higher temperature results in higher
concentrations in the beer. However the extraction
yield is different for alcohols compared to terpenes and
other compounds. It was also observed that a six-fold
higher concentration of hops yielded, in general, higher
extraction values which are on average only 1-3 times
higher. This may be due to a saturation limit.

World: AB InBev announces successful completion of business combination with SABMiller
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV/SA announced on October 10 it has successfully completed the business combination with SABMiller plc.
AB InBev announced the listing of and the commencement of dealings in its 1,693,242,156 New Ordinary Shares on Euronext Brussels, effective 11 October 2016. AB InBev also announced the listing of and the commencement of dealings in its New Ordinary Shares on the JSE and the BMV, and the commencement of trading of American Depositary Receipts representing New Ordinary Shares on NYSE, effective 11 October 2016.
The company also announced the completion of the divestiture of SABMiller Limited's equity interest in China Resources Snow Breweries Limited to China Resources Beer (Holdings) Company Limited and the completion of the divestiture of SABMiller Limited's interest in the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brand families and associated businesses in Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and internationally.

USA: MillerCoors now has only one owner
|
The sun rose on MillerCoors' Chicago headquarters on October 11 just the same as the day before. It was, as MillerCoors CEO Gavin Hattersley often says, business as usual, but with one small exception.
"The biggest change is we are now the largest American-owned brewer, and that's a big deal for me. I'm quite excited," Hattersley said in a phone interview to Chicago Tribune on October 11.
No longer a joint venture, MillerCoors now has only one owner, as of October 11 — Molson Coors, now the third largest brewer in the world. Technically speaking, Molson Coors is an American-Canadian company, with dual corporate headquarters in Denver and Montreal, but the vast majority of its shareholders are in the U.S. — hence Hattersley's point.
As the foam settles on Anheuser-Busch InBev's roughly $108 billion acquisition of SABMiller, which closed on October 10, forming the largest beer company in the world, MillerCoors remains focused on its goal of turning its business around.
"We have a lot of work to do to get back to (sales) growth," Hattersley said.

Asahi Group Holdings, the new owner of Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Grolsch and Meantime, has announced the completion of its acquisition of Miller Brands and the formation of Asahi UK, Off Licence News reported on October 12.
The announcement coincides with the confirmation that AB InBev has successfully completed the deal to acquire SABMiller.
As part of the acquisition of SAB Miller, AB InBev was forced to sell a number of its and SAB Miller’s brands in Asia and Europe in order to meet the demands of competition regulators. Within this it offloaded a number of brands, including Grolsch and Peroni, to Asahi.
Asahi’s investment is part of Asahi Europe’s strategy to lead the development of the continent’s Super Premium Beer sector, the company said.
Gary Haigh, managing director of Asahi UK, said: “Our Super Premium Brand portfolio is powered by a seamless distribution network, expert customer marketing and sales capability – this means we can extend and grow Asahi’s ambition in the UK. The craft brewery revolution has transformed barley and hops demand, say experts.
The United States is the mecca of craft beer with an estimated 4,144 breweries. The next largest market is the United Kingdom with 723. Canada ranks sixth at 483, according to Alltech, an animal health company that also owns a brewery.
Craft breweries are defined as at least 75 percent independently owned breweries producing 15,000 to six million barrels of beer per year.
They accounted for 12 to 13 percent of the total U.S. beer market last year, and the industry expects that share will grow to 20 percent by 2020.
The impact of this new beer player on the barley industry has been profound, said retired University of Saskatchewan barley breeder Brian Rossnagel.
He estimates craft brewers buy at least 20 to 25 percent of the malt produced in North America, which is about double their share of the beer market.
“Craft brewers are all malt brewers, so that’s very important to barley growers and maltsters,” Rossnagel told delegates attending Ag-West Bio’s annual meeting.
Mainstream brewers incorporate sugar adjuncts, which are unmalted grains such as corn, rice and wheat, or syrups made from cheap sugars into their recipes.

Molson Coors wants to offer Canadians a wider selection of imported beers after closing its C$12-billion US acquisition of Miller brands that makes it the third-largest global brewer, CBC.ca reported on October 12.
Several craft and mainstream brands from the United States and Europe — including Leinenkugel, Miller High Life, Sharp's, Staropramen and Franciscan Well — could make their way onto store shelves next year, Molson Coors CEO Mark Hunter said.
Meanwhile, Canadian craft beers like Creemore and Granville Island could be exported to the large American market. "It's potentially going to be a two way street," Hunter said in an interview. "We're doing all of our planning right now for 2017 so you'd expect to see some of these emerge in our portfolio once we get probably into the spring of 2017 so they're there for peak selling time."
The Denver and Montreal-based brewer has acquired SABMiller's 58 per cent stake in MillerCoors, a U.S. joint venture formed in 2008. It also gained the international rights to Miller brands and royalty-free U.S. licences for SABMiller import and license brands including Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, Fosters and Redd's.

Australia: Coca-Cola Amatil gains exclusive distribution rights to Miller Genuine Draft and Miller Chill in Australia

Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) and Molson Coors International (MCI) have signed a new deal which will see Miller Genuine Draft and Miller Chill exclusively distributed by CCA in Australia, The Shout reported on October 11.
Molson Coors is now the world’s fifth biggest brewer after AB InBev completed its takeover of SABMiller and the addition of the Miller brand, Australia’s fourth biggest Premium International beer, is “hugely significant” for CCA’s Alcohol and Coffee business.
Shane Richardson CCA’s Managing Director of Alcohol and Coffee said: “This new agreement deepens our existing relationship with Molson Coors, now the world’s third largest brewer, and represents an exciting step in our journey to grow our beer business across Australia.”
The move is part of a new long-term sales and distribution agreement between CCA and MCI, a division of Molson Coors which today acquired the global rights to the Miller brand portfolio as part of the AB InBev deal.
CCA and MCI have been brand partners since 2013 with CCA distributing the Molson Coors beer portfolio, which includes Coors and Blue Moon.

UK: Pound weakens again further reducing SABMiller investors takeover premium
|
The pound fell for a third trading day on October 10, deepening its loss since Friday, October 7’s flash crash and compounding the woes of SABMiller investors, whose takeover premium has all but vanished with the currency’s post-Brexit decline, BDlive reported.
The pound weakened by about 0.3%, trading at $1.24, in early morning trade on Monday, October 10.
Against the rand, the pound was at about R17.12 shortly after 10am on October 10.
At the time Anheuser-Busch InBev announced its offer of £44 per share for SABMiller, the exchange rate was about R22/£, and the deal represented a premium of about 22%.
On October 7 the pound fell about 6% within minutes during Asian trading hours. The steep decline was blamed on trading algorithms, and the currency recouped most of the decline.
Nonetheless, it has weakened markedly since the UK’s June 23 referendum on leaving the European Union, losing about 15% against the euro since then.
