BITTERNESS QUESTIONS
IN DRY HOPPED BEERS
ABSTRACT
A German research team looked into the bitterness
of dry hopped beers. They found that dry hopping
causes an increase in IBUs, alpha acids and
humulinones, and conversely a reduction of iso-alpha
acids. In addition, the correlation between measured
IBUs and sensory bitterness was rather poor. And
although a degradation of alpha acids and humulinones
was observed during storage, the sensory bitterness of
the beer was found to be almost unchanged. So there
are still a lot of questions to be answered about the
bitterness of dry hopped beers.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation continues to reel under worsening economic conditions
|
SABMiller’s associate unit in Zimbabwe, Delta Corporation, continues to reel under worsening economic conditions in the country, with a dollar crunch and weak consumer spending patterns forcing downwards lager beer volumes for the quarter period to the end of September, Independent Online reported on October 18.
Delta will become a unit of an enlarged entity following the merger of SABMiller and Anheuser-Busch InBev. The deal is expected to be finalised this month and the Zimbabwean unit has said that it does not anticipate any material changes from the amalgamation.
It has, however, reeled under the heavy saddle of Zimbabwe’s economy, which has been worsened by a biting cash crunch that is disrupting operations and curbing consumer spending power.
The difficult economy in Zimbabwe has also occasioned a shift in alcohol consumption patterns, with experts saying consumers are now trending their options downwards.
Cash shortages in Zimbabwe have also forced Delta to delay the commissioning of two new plants in Kwekwe and Masvingo as outbound remittances from Zimbabwe take longer to effect.
The company now anticipates that the new plants will start contributing to production before the end of this year.
“The shortages of foreign currency resulted in reduced importation of consumer goods leading to an increase

|
Grupo Petrópolis, Brazil’s second-largest brewery, has changed its forecast of a decline in sales this year to a single-digit growth thanks to inspiring sales results in the north-east of the country, Reuters reported on October 14.
The company, which is trying to expand its presence across the country by 2020, now expects this year’s sales to grow by 2-3%.
Grupo Petrópolis’ market share last year was 12.94% and reached 14.1% in September this year.

Vietnam: Habeco allowed to list on the Unlisted Public Company Market and trade 231.8 mln shares
|
Giving into the government’s urging, Vietnam’s two leading beer producers Hanoi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Habeco) and Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Sabeco) have both registered to list their shares on stock exchanges and received approval.
On October 17, the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) allowed Habeco to list on the Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM), VietNamNet Bridge reported on October 19.
Habeco, to be coded as BHN on UPCoM, will trade 231.8 million shares.
The fist transaction day and the starting share price will be published in the upcoming days.
In another move, on September 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) approved Sabeco’s proposal to list on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE).
Sabeco will have 12 weeks from September 26 to complete its listing on HoSE. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said at the government’s regular press conference on August 31 that the state plans to complete the divestment from Sabeco and Habeco within 16 months.
Hai said that the MoIT had directed the two companies to list their shares on the stock exchanges and draw up their divestment schedules, identifying stages and deadlines.
Hai said that domestic and foreign investors alike can buy the shares. The
