IN DRY HOPPED BEERS
ABSTRACT
A German research team looked into the bitterness
of dry hopped beers. They found that dry hopping
causes an increase in IBUs, alpha acids and
humulinones, and conversely a reduction of iso-alpha
acids. In addition, the correlation between measured
IBUs and sensory bitterness was rather poor. And
although a degradation of alpha acids and humulinones
was observed during storage, the sensory bitterness of
the beer was found to be almost unchanged. So there
are still a lot of questions to be answered about the
bitterness of dry hopped beers.

Vietnam: Habeco to list all of its shares on October 28
|
Habeco, one of Vietnam's biggest brewers, will list all of its shares for the first time next week, giving it a market value of $405 million, the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) said on October 21.
The listing on a secondary exchange does not necessarily imply any changes to the ownership of a company controlled by the government and Danish brewer Carlsberg but it does show how much the company is worth.
As such it is seen as a step forward in a government plan to divest its 82-percent stake. Carlsberg owned 17 percent of Habeco as of August 31.
The 231.8 million shares of Habeco, or Hanoi Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., will have a basis price of 39,000 dong ($1.75) on their first day on the country's Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM) on October 28, HNX said in a statement.
The Southeast Asian government wants to fully offload its $2.2 billion stake in Habeco and Sabeco, Vietnam's biggest beer firm, to boost performances at the state firms and to help relieve an increasingly tight state budget.

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia’s Q3 net profit drops 10% from last year
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd reported a net profit of RM56.92 million for three months ended Sept 30, 2016, a 10% drop from RM63 million in the previous corresponding period, due to weaker economic conditions and softer consumer sentiment, The Sun Daily reported on October 21.
Revenue for the quarter fell 5% to RM384.82 million from RM405 million.
In a filing with the stock exchange, Heineken managing director Hans Essaadi said the decline in revenue reflects the challenging environment that the group operates in, especially as economic factors continue to weigh on consumer sentiment.
“Consequently, profit before tax also declined due to the lower revenue and timing of commercial spend,” he noted.
While Essaadi expects conditions to stabilise and improve over time, he said the high excise duties on beer are generating greater demand for cheap contraband products. “We welcome the increased efforts by government authorities to clamp down on smuggling activities, and we will continue to support all efforts taken by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to curb contraband products.”
Despite a challenging external environment, he expects the group to deliver a resilient performance for the financial period ending Dec 31, 2016.

Belgium: AB InBev acquires local organic beer Ginette
|
AB InBev has made its first entry to Belgium’s organic beer sector by acquiring local brand Ginette, RTBF reported on October 21.
First launched in 2009 as wheat beer, the Ginette portfolio now includes a blonde, a fruit beer and a triple and is produced exclusively from organic ingredients by La Binchoise brewery in Hainaut. One of the brand’s founders, Didier Hamoir, said they had to “choose between building our own brewery or get associated to a partner who could help us make our wish come true, as organic beer is very popular and in our actual context we cannot meet the demand.”
La Binchoise will continue brewing Ginette beers initially. The brand aims at achieving sales of 300 thousand litres in 2017.

Ireland & UK: “Hard Brexit borders” would be bad for Diageo
|
Good things come to those who wait, the well-known Guinness slogan once claimed.
But that is unlikely to apply in the case of a hard Brexit, which would likely stop the black stuff flowing freely across the Irish north-south border, and result in lines of Guinness lorries queuing in both directions, The Guardian reported on October 20.
“An impact on the border will be an impact on the heartbeat of the economy,” said Oliver Loomes, the Ireland country director for the drinks giant Diageo, which produces two of the world’s best known drinks brands, Guinness and Bailey’s Irish Cream.
The company’s operations on the island vividly illustrate how interlinked the two economies have become.
“We operate on an all-island basis. I think we have one of the most integrated operations of any business in Ireland,” said Loomes, who is responsible for the company’s operations on the island of Ireland and not simply the Irish Republic.
He estimates that there are about 13,000 border crossings a year by Diageo trucks. The introduction of a hard border could delay each truck by between 30 minutes and an hour, making each journey €100 more expensive. That alone would cost €1.3 mln.

Singapore: ThaiBev completes increase in issued and paid-up share capital into its Singapore subsidiary

Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) announced that it has completed the increase in the issued and paid-up share capital worth $5.6 mln into its subsidiary, InterBev (Singapore), Singapore Business Review reported on October 20.
The capital injection brings total paid-up capital to $72.3 mln from $66.7 mln.
ThaiBev's direct subsidiary, International Beverage Holdings (IBHL) funded the capital increase in InterBev from cash flow from operations.

USA: No beer is too small for AB InBev, now owner of US largest homebrewing suppliers

For the world's biggest brewer, no beer is too small, Bloomberg reported on October 19.
As it fights defection from its blockbuster brands to craft beers, Anheuser-Busch InBev has turned to kitchen and closet brews, buying one of the continent's largest suppliers for do-it-yourself beer-makers, Northern Brewer, for an undisclosed sum.
"We understand the consumer need is changing, and we want to keep up with the evolving beer landscape," said Cassiano Hissnauer, global vice president for homebrewing at ZX Ventures, InBev's New York-based venture capital unit that led the acquisition. (It casts itself as a "nimble global start-up" full of "data geeks.")
Northern Brewer, based just north of Minneapolis, sells everything an aspiring Eberhard Anheuser might want—grains, malt, hops, yeast, carboys, kettles, pumps, refractometers, immersion chillers, airlocks, fermenters and, of course, bungs. For novices, it hawks small-batch kits that will brew one gallon for $15 and up.
The company has built quite a following in its 23 years and now has about 150 employees and four retail stores. Founder Chris Farley says that in his "wilder fantasies," he thinks the company has played a part in catalysing the entire craft-beer movement.

UK: Carlsberg UK launching gluten-free Czech lager Celia
|
Carlsberg UK is extending its portfolio of premium beers with Czech lager Celia which also taps into demand for gluten-free products, Bar Magazine reported on October 20.
The UK business is introducing Celia Organic, a 4.5% ABV beer made with 100% Saaz hops and Moravian malt, and Celia Dark, a 5.7% ABV dark lager, using 100% Saaz hops and Toffee Bavarian malt plus sand-filtered water from the Žatec foothills.
They are produced at Žatecky Pivovar, which dates back to 1801 and is housed in the castle walls of the town of Žatec in the north of the country. It is one of several microbreweries co-owned by the Carlsberg Group around the world.
Both beers are brewed using a patented de-glutenisation process while a silicon filtration technique means the range is also suitable for vegans. In addition, a natural carbonation process is used to give the beers a light mouth feel without compromising on taste.
