HOW MUCH OF MY HOP AROMA GOES INTO THE LINER?

ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a German research group. They compared different crown liner material with highly hopped beer packaged in bottles. For all measured hop components, the first 20 days showed a high absorption curve of these aroma components in the different liner materials. There was little difference observed between those liner materials but it was shown that the hydrocarbon components are especially susceptible to quick sorption while terpenoids showed minor migration tendency. Drink your beer before the liners get all the delicious hop flavours!

Brewery news USA, NY: Brooklyn Brewery still evaluating various options for new brewery
Two years ago, it was reported that the Brooklyn Brewery was eyeing Staten Island for the location of a new production facility—but the Staten Island Advance is now reporting that the company may be lured upstate instead, Gothamist reported on October 29.

The brewery was originally scouting a site on Staten Island's West Shore as part of a planned industrial development on a former potential NASCAR raceway site, but withdrew after negotiations didn't work out. The brewery then began looking for other possible West Shore sites that could house a 200,000-square-foot facility—but the company was also looking other sites in the mid-Hudson as possible locations.

In May, Brooklyn Brewery cofounder Steve Hindy told the Wall Street Journal that the company was negotiating for a large production facility on Staten Island. "We're exporting a lot of beer. By being in Staten Island near the port, we'll reduce our transit costs significantly," Hindy said. At the time, the company was doing the majority of its brewing in Utica.

But the Advance reports that the brewery is "getting a deal they can't refuse" to locate upstate, where operating expenses, land, and labor costs are much lower than in the five boroughs. A source reportedly told the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: One Duck Brewing puts opening plans on hold
A brewery that announced its opening plans and ran a crowdfunding campaign in the summer of 2015 has revealed that it may not open after all due to “a year of extremely bad luck”, Canadian Beer News reported on October 28.

One Duck Brewing was being established by long-time homebrewer Jesse Paine, with the intention of brewing small batches of primarily Belgian-inspired ales. But in a post on the brewery’s Facebook page last week, it was announced that those plans are now on hold:

The most recent situation is that the man who sold One Duck brewing equipment actually did not own the equipment as he was in debt to a mortgage company. As a result ODB has put all operations on hold for the last few months to try and resolve this situation. After hiring lawyers and consulting with anyone who can offer advice One Duck is on the verge of closing up shop (before even opening its doors) and filing for bankruptcy.

The post goes on to note that Paine is “hoping for a change of luck and to somehow get brewing, however the chances of that happening at this point are looking pretty slim.”

It has not been stated what restitution, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Crooked Tooth Brewing Company may launch already on November 4
Owners of Crooked Tooth Brewing Company are ready to launch on Friday, November 4, provided they can get everything done in time, Arizona Daily Star reported.

The crew, which includes husband-and-wife team Ben Vernon and Julie Vernon and their business partner Armando Basurto, is in the final stages of fine-tuning their space, a 2,400-square foot building at 228 E. Sixth St. in Tucson.

The equipment is up and running. The bar and lighting have been properly installed. All that was left to do as of late last week, was a little cleanup and the construction of the taproom tables, some of which were going to line the former auto shop’s large rolling garage doors that face the bustling traffic of East Sixth.

The doors are longtime fixtures.

“A gentleman came in concerned about what we were going to do with them,” said Julie. “He remembered being in the building when he was 7 years old, watching his dad install them.”

Ben said he was pleased with the property, which includes a spacious, 1,400-square foot patio area that will serve as a staging area for live music.

Ben and Julie Vernon are Tucson natives. They met down the street at Tucson High School and have been married ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Edelbrau Brewery production plan approved by Pittsfield Township
Plans for a new brewery proposed for the State and Ellsworth roads intersection in Pittsfield Township are moving forward.

But township approval of plans for a public taproom room at the Edelbrau Brewery are on hold, MLive.com reported on October 31.

In early October, the Pittsfield Township Planning Commission tabled plans for the brewery and the tasting room. At its Oct. 20 meeting, the commission approved a conditional use permit for the project's first phase, which involves production. A second conditional use permit is needed for the taproom that's a part of phase two.

Craig Lyon, director of municipal services for the township, said planning officials are worried about the parking lot layout and pedestrian safety.

"We're concerned about getting the public in there, because it's not a primo site," he said. "The way it’s currently laid out, pedestrians are walking out into the parking around a truck dock, and it's very haphazard. There's no separation between cars and pedestrians.

"We're asking for them to try and figure out some better parking and pedestrian circulation."

The brewery is planned for a 5,332-square-foot warehouse space at 719 Ellsworth Road. Plans submitted to the commission by Edelbrau call for a 4,915-square-foot production facility to be built out as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: No Boat Brewing Company now open in Snoqualmie
No Boat Brewing Company is now open in Snoqualmie, Washington. The brewery is located in the area commonly referred to as Snoqualmie Ridge, seattlepi.com reported on October 28.

From the company website: “Situated at the top of scenic Snoqualmie Ridge and a stone’s throw from the beautiful Snoqualmie Falls, No Boat provides a brewery and tasting room that feels simultaneously an escape into nature and a call back to the roots of the Pacific Northwest. Boasting a spacious and airy interior and patio, there’s simply no match for a hand-crafted brew and gorgeous view.”

“Years ago it all began with a simple idea: what if a space existed that dedicated itself to the crossroads between beer and banter, style and service. Between customer and craft. Taking their skill and background in fermentation, brewing, and service, the owners of No Boat Brewing Company then sought to invent a space where the willing could not only wander in for a delicious beer, but a beautiful time with friends, family, and familiar alike.”

“Calling the Pacific Northwest home, and coming from an area where recreation is not a pastime but a lifestyle, they realized only one thing was missing. They didn’t own a boat. ”

“Taking the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Couple planning to launch small brewery in Park Hill in Denver
“Park Hill is probably one of the most tightly knit neighborhoods in Denver,” says Chris Cunningham. But unlike the west side of town, where there are plenty of small business strips woven into the neighborhoods, Denver’s east side is mostly just houses. So when Cunningham and his businesses partners found a retail building for sale at 2895 Fairfax Street, tucked into Park Hill, “we just about fell over,” he notes.

Some time next year, Cunningham and his wife, Tauna Rignall, along with another couple from Seattle, plan to open a small brewery inside the building, a former gelato shop, which they bought in August. They haven’t revealed a name for it yet because they are still researching brewery name trademarks, Westword reported on October 31.

”This is something we have wanted to do for quite some time,” says Cunningham, a chemical engineer who has been home-brewing for 25 years. “The number-one reason we wanted to start a brewery was because we wanted to be a part of a community. To do that, you have to find a building that is surrounded by one.”

But finding an affordable building in the middle of a neighborhood, rather than in a more industrial area, is almost ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria Plc reports 6% revenue increase for Q1 of its financial year to September 2017
Guinness Nigeria Plc on October 28 announced a revenue increase of 6 per cent for the first quarter (July-September) of its financial year, The Eagle Online reported.

The company said the increase was driven in part by contributions from its new mainstream and international premium spirits business as well as the continuing growth of its value brands.

The financial statements released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange also showed that the company had a Loss After Tax position of N2.2 billion in the period.

Peter Ndegwa, the Managing Director/CEO of Guinness Nigeria, said the revenue growth was in spite of continuing challenges in the operating environment.

Ndegwa said: “The environment remains tough but we have seen contributions from our mainstream and international premium spirits brands as well as continuing growth of Satzenbrau. These were the key drivers of the 6% revenue growth recorded for the quarter. Our cost of sales was impacted by the high inflationary environment and continuing currency devaluation leading to a reduction in operating profit. The higher finance cost in the quarter is due to the impact of unrealized foreign exchange losses as a result of the currency devaluation.

“Going forward, innovation will continue to be a big part of our strategy us ...More info on site

Brewery news Poland: Polish beer exports up 19.8% in 2015
Polish beer exports totaled EUR170.6 mln in 2015 achieving 19.8% increase versus 2014, Radio Poland reported on October 31.

According to the Union of Brewing Industry Employers in Poland director Danuta Gut, the increase can be explained, among other factors, by growing groups of Polish immigrants in the US and Canada.

The Netherlands are the No.1 importer of Polish beer followed by Germany and the UK.

Brewery news Portugal: Budejovicky Budvar wins another battle for Budweiser brand in Portugal
Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar says a Portuguese court has upheld a previous ruling prohibiting rival, Anheuser-Busch InBev, from selling beer under the Budweiser name in Portugal, Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on October 31.

State-owned Budvar has been fighting with Anheuser-Busch for over a century over use of the Budweiser brand name. The legal battle continued when Anheuser-Busch was taken over by Belgium's InBev in 2008 to create the world's largest brewer.

In a statement on October 31, the company said the court in Lisbon — Tribunal da Propriedade Intelectual — rejected AB InBev's challenge to an earlier 2014 ruling.

Budvar says the verdict is effective, and that another legal complaint filed by AB InBev, cannot delay it.

AB InBev's didn't immediately comment but has previously said sales of its beer under the BUD brand in Portugal have held up.

Barley news Ethiopia: New malting barley promises to revolutionize Ethiopia’s barley sector
A new high-yielding, pest-resistant variety of malting barley has the potential to revolutionize Ethiopia’s barley sector, helping to meet growing domestic demand, boost export earnings, and substantially raise farmer incomes, ReliefWeb reported on October 31.

Barley is a major crop across the Highlands of Ethiopia, where it is grown by approximately 4.1 million smallholder farmers on close to one million hectares (ha). The country is one of the major producers of barley in Sub-Saharan Africa, and has a growing malt beverage sector.

Yet, despite a favorable bio-physical environment, conventional varieties tend to be low-yielding - achieving yields of only 2 tons per hectare (t/ha) - and susceptible to pests and disease. This means that production can only meet 35 percent of domestic demand. Last year, Ethiopia was forced to import over 63,000 tonnes of malt, at a cost of 38 million USD.

The new release – Singitan – is resistant to shoot fly, a major pest in Ethiopia which can cause yield losses of up to 100 percent during shorter rainy seasons. It is also higher-yielding than local varieties – generating up to 4.1 t/ha - and demonstrates good malting qualities.

Brewery news Portugal: Government plans 3% beer excises hike
Portugal’s government has announced its draft 2017 Budget which sets out plans to introduce a 3% increase in taxes for beer, spirits and liqueur wines, ESM reported on October 21.

The tax on the beers currently oscillates between €7.98 (0.5%-1.2% alcohol volume) and €28.06 (over 1.2% alcohol volume) per hectolitre.

From next year, it will range from €8.22 and €28.90.

Spirits will be taxed €1367.78/hectolitre (currently €1327.94), while the tax on liqueur wines will rise to €75.05/hectolitre (previously €72.86).

The Portuguese Association of Beer Producers (APCV) has expressed ‘deep disappointment’ with the new tax hike, arguing that the industry should be protected, as is the case with wine, which enjoys a zero taxation policy.

The draft budget also introduces a so-called ‘fat tax’, imposed on beverages with sugar and sweeteners, but excluding those made of milk, juices and fruit nectars.

The new tax rates will enter into force on 1 January 2017.
