HOW MEANINGFUL ARE IBU VALUES?

ABSTRACT
US researchers looked into several parameters that can influence IBU values such as pH, ABV, alpha acid addition and dry hopping in general. In a pH range from 4.1 to 4.9 they found that below a pH of 4.35 bitterness is perceived less intensely and described with sour and astringent. Above 4.35 bitterness is perceived more intensely and described being lingering. It was also found that dry hopping actually reduces the perceived bitterness while increasing the tested IBU values.

Brewery news Vietnam: Habeco now is one of most sought-after listed companies
Vietnam's third largest brewer has become one of the most sought-after companies.

Eight years after its initial public offering, Habeco finally had its market debut late last month and quickly became one of the most sought-after listed companies, VnExpress International reported on November 5.

The third largest brewer in Vietnam has seen its stock soar 2.8 times since its debut at the Hanoi Stock Exchange's Unlisted Public Company Market. The rally has left the company valued at VND25.3 trillion or $1.14 billion.

Habeco, which controls 20 percent of the local market and a leader in the north, debuted on October 28 at VND39,000 and closed at VND109,500 on November 4.

Its listing came amid the Vietnamese government's renewed push for privatization of state-owned companies.

Foreign investors always have eyes on the brewer as they are attracted by the strong growth of Vietnam’s beer market, one of the biggest in Asia with an estimated annual output increase of 25 percent by 2020.

While the government owns 81.79 percent of Habeco, Danish brewer Carlsberg holds 17.23 percent and is looking to further increase its stake.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry, which manages the public stake in Habeco, is negotiating with Carlsberg on the deal.

When Carlsberg became the only ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi Group Holdings poised to catch up with peers in overseas expansion
Japanese brewer Asahi Group Holdings may have been slower than its peers to expand abroad, but the company is poised to catch up with a string of acquisitions in Western Europe, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on November 7.

Asahi has completed its purchase of four companies, including Italy's Peroni and Dutch brand Grolsch, from Britain's SABMiller, which was taken over by the world's largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev of Belgium. These units rang up about 86 billion yen ($834 million) in sales for the year ended in March. The deal raises overseas sales to about 16% of Asahi's total, up around 4 percentage points from the estimate for this fiscal year.

When President Akiyoshi Koji attended a mid-October gathering at a London hotel with representatives of the acquired companies, several asked him when they would be able to start selling Asahi's flagship Super Dry beer. "There is strong interest in Japan's beer technologies and brand marketing," Koji said.

Asahi plans to start producing and selling Super Dry in those locales as early as 2018. Though the product has barely penetrated the Italian and Dutch markets, Asahi thinks room for growth exists if it taps the premium-beer sales channels and expertise offered by Peroni ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Sabeco files listing application to the HCMC Stock Exchange
Vietnam's largest brewer Sai Gon Alcohol, Beer and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco), known for its iconic Saigon and 333 brands, has filed a listing application to the HCM Stock Exchange, eight years after its initial public offering in January 2008, Vietnam.net Bridge reported on November 8.

The company's decision took into account its listing standards, market size and reputation, liquidity and investor interest of the two national stock exchanges, in which the HCM Stock Exchange gains an upper hand over the Ha Noi Stock Exchange.

The listing timetable, as well as the reference price for the first trading day remains unclear, but Sabeco expects to finalise these issues by the end of this month.

Late in September, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved Sabeco's listing on the HCM City's exchange and requested that the beer producer select a consulting firm to perform the listing procedures.

The listing of local beer producers has attracted big investors' attention over the last two months after the Government urged equitized State-owned companies to list shares on the stock exchange.

On October 28, 2016, Ha Noi Beer Alcohol and Beverage Joint Stock Corporation, known as Habeco, debuted its almost 232 million shares on the Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM), the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery books its 23rd year of continuous volume growth
Australia’s biggest locally-owner brewer, South Australia’s Coopers Brewery, has booked its 23rd year of continuous volume growth despite lean times for the brewing industry, which have seen per capita consumption collapse to lows not seen since World War II, The Australian reported on November 7.

However, tougher trading conditions in the US in the DIY home-brew sector has punctured the value of its American brewing business Mr Beer, with the offshore operation also losing some key accounts which triggered a A$7.5 million writedown for Coopers.

It meant that for fiscal 2016 Coopers actually recorded a 16.3 per cent slide in full-year net profit, the first time in a number of years that earnings have gone backwards for the nation’s third largest brewer.

Coopers, which is owned by the Cooper family, has posted a 3.3 per cent rise in beer sales for fiscal 2016 to a record 81.5 million litres.

The positive sales momentum means that for the past 23 years, Coopers has enjoyed compound sales growth of 9.2 per cent, at a time when total Australian beer sales have been contracting.

Releasing the company’s annual results, Coopers managing director Tim Cooper said packaged beer sales during 2015-16 had risen 3.8 per cent, while keg volumes ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Habeco to seek shareholders’ opinions on its listing on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange soon
The Hanoi Beer Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Habeco) will soon seek shareholders’ written opinions on it listing on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) in the fourth quarter, VietNam.Net Bridge reported on November 9.

The number of shareholders able to send written opinions on changing from the Unlisted Public Company (UPCoM) market to HoSE will be finalized on November 17, according to Vietnam Securities Depository (VSD).

Habeco expects to be listed in either November or December. Military Bank Securities Company (MBS) will be its consultant, according to VSD.

The listing occurs in the middle of negotiations that started on October 31 between Danish brewer Carlsberg and Habeco over additional stakes in the Hanoi-based brewer. Negotiations remained ongoing at the time of writing, according to unofficial reports. Neither side was willing to disclose any further information to VET.

Both Habeco and the Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) have been equitized previously, with the State still holding 81.79 per cent of Habeco, its employees 0.56 per cent, other shareholders 0.88 per cent, and its strategic investor, Carlsberg, 17.08 per cent.

Together with Sabeco, the government is keen to divest from Habeco in 2016-2017. Carlsberg became its strategic shareholder in 2009. On October 28, all ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Suntory Beer Ltd. partially resumes production at factory in earthquake-hit Kumamoto Prefecture
Suntory Beer Ltd. partially resumed beer production at its factory in Kumamoto Prefecture on November 8, after nearly seven months of suspension due to strong earthquakes in the southwestern Japan prefecture from mid-April, Jiji Press reported.

The plant in the town of Kashima, for beer products and soft drinks, was the last to see production restart among major companies' disaster-affected plants in Kumamoto.

Barley news UK: Net spring barley area may hit the second highest level in the last 20 years next year
Early GB planting intentions for harvest 2017 suggest that net spring barley area is expected to hit the second highest level in the last 20 years at 799 thousand ha (1.997 million acres), 17 per cent up on harvest 2016 but behind 2013, which was driven by poor conditions in the previous autumn, FG Insight reported on November 8.

The prediction comes from AHDB’s Early Bird Survey which also suggests oilseed rape (OSR) area will fall for the fifth consecutive year. At 557 thousand ha (1.392 million acres), if realised, this would be the lowest area planted to OSR in the UK since 2004 – 554 thousand ha (1.385 mln acres) and is forecast four per cent lower than this season – 579 thousand ha (1.447 mln acres). However, regional differences in area planted to OSR are expected for next year’s crop. The east of the country is expected to see a dramatic decrease in area planted of 28 per cent. This is due to cabbage stem flea beetle damage and a lack of moisture which made establishment difficult, according to AHDB. However, in other areas of the country, such as the Midlands, south of England and Scotland, the net area ...More info on site
