HOW MEANINGFUL ARE IBU VALUES?
ABSTRACT
US researchers looked into several parameters
that can influence IBU values such as pH, ABV, alpha
acid addition and dry hopping in general. In a pH range
from 4.1 to 4.9 they found that below a pH of 4.35
bitterness is perceived less intensely and described with
sour and astringent. Above 4.35 bitterness is perceived
more intensely and described being lingering. It was also
found that dry hopping actually reduces the perceived
bitterness while increasing the tested IBU values.

World: AB InBev left out of European markets’ “Trump rally”
|
AB InBev has been left out of European markets' "Trump rally," as investor worry about the mega-brewer's exposure to the U.S. and Mexican markets, but some analysts have argued the concern is overdone, TheStreet reported on November 10.
Multi-national consumer stocks have performed below market benchmarks since Donald Trump's surprise victory amid bets the President-Elect's tough stance on trade agreements and a possible repeal of NAFTA could make life more difficult for international companies.
AB InBev lost 1.41% on November 10 to within a €1 distance of its 52-week low of €99.96 each, even as broader European markets rallied. Shares in the company have lost more than 11% since the beginning of 2016 as it completed its $100 million acquisition of SABMiller.
Investors have questioned whether AB InBev, which owns Mexico's leading brewer - Corona-maker Grupo Modelo - and controls 63% of the country's beer market, will suffer from a slowdown in the North American economy as a result of potentially frosty relations with the next U.S. President.
Analysts at London-based Liberum, however, argue that concern might be over-exaggerated, noting that Mexico has shrunk to just 7% of AB InBev's group sales since the SABMiller takeover.

EU: Poland's state-run insurer PZU not interested in AB InBev’s beer brands
|
Poland's state-run insurer PZU is not interested in buying a group of beer brands being sold by Anheuser-Busch InBev, which include Pilsner Urquell in the Czech Republic and Tyskie and Lech in Poland, PZU's CEO said on November 10.
"We do not intend to invest equity in this sector. We do not aim to be a shareholder in beer assets, as we focus on our core business," Michal Krupinski told a news conference.
At least six indicative offers have been submitted by industry players and buyout funds for the Anheuser-Busch InBev beer brands in central and Eastern Europe, sources said on November 8. Polish juice maker Maspex Wadowice Group, Hungary's MOL and and PZU submitted a joint offer, the sources said.

USA & Mexico: Mexican beer stock feeling impact of US elections
|
Mexico played a big role in Donald Trump’s bid for the Presidency of the United States. One of Trump’s earliest and most popular schemes involved building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to curb illegal immigration, and he promised to make Mexico pay for it. But it wasn’t just Trump’s voters who were paying attention to his plans. The stock of Constellation Brands, which imports Corona and other Mexican beers into the United States, was tightly correlated with the US race for the presidency. When the FBI recently decided to look at more of Hillary Clinton’s emails, Constellation’s stock dropped. When FBI Director James Comey announced no charges would be brought, it climbed right back up, surging with the promise of a Clinton presidency, VinePair reported on November 11.
These trends were actually fairly consistent with the markets overall. But things changed the day after Trump won the election. While U.S. markets rallied to record closing highs on November 9th, Constellation saw its stock collapse, closing down nearly 8%, off of even deeper lows.

The Philippines: Craft beer maker Palaweño Brewery set on expansion next year

As the craft beer industry in the Philippines begins to grow, the first and only brewery of artisanal beer in Palawan is set to share its taste of success to more Filipinos through expansion, the Manila Bulletin reported on November 11.
Palaweño Brewery is a small, wooden brewery and taphouse that makes 300 cases of craft beer a month. It serves craft beer of all sorts—American amber ale, Belgian wheat beer, German Honey Kolsch to name a few.
The brewery’s part-owner, Ayah Javier, said that it’s only open from 1:00 p.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m. to give way to bars, restaurants and hotels that carry their beer.
Javier said that the place is frequented by more foreign tourists than local tourists, perhaps because that although the craft beer industry is slowly growing, it is still relatively new to Filipinos.
“When we started, there were only five (craft beer breweries) now, there are 33,” Javier said.
“We’re in the works for expanding,” she said, clarifying that this did not mean branching out but rather increasing its production rate from 300 cases of beer to 1,200 cases by March 2017.
