HOW MEANINGFUL ARE IBU VALUES?

ABSTRACT
US researchers looked into several parameters that can influence IBU values such as pH, ABV, alpha acid addition and dry hopping in general. In a pH range from 4.1 to 4.9 they found that below a pH of 4.35 bitterness is perceived less intensely and described with sour and astringent. Above 4.35 bitterness is perceived more intensely and described being lingering. It was also found that dry hopping actually reduces the perceived bitterness while increasing the tested IBU values.

Brewery news USA, UT: Utah still not allowing full-strength beer at grocery stores
Utah is part of an ever-shrinking slice of the country that bans full-strength beer at grocery stores, and as another state abandons those limits some in the beer industry worry that Utah could be left in the cold as big breweries limit or even halt production of low-alcohol beers, The Denver Post reported on November 11.

Making the lighter booze requires extra work for production facilities, and ultimately may not make financial sense for companies such as Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors after Oklahoma voted Tuesday to allow full-strength beer, said Jim Olsen, president of the Utah Beer Wholesalers Association.

His solution is for Utah to follow other states and raise or abandon the alcohol limits. Doing away with so-called Utah beer would be a big shift in the state known for quirky alcohol rules, but the state has made other changes designed to normalize liquor laws, like removing a requirement that made bars private clubs.

One big brewer, Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement after the Oklahoma vote that it plans to “continue to provide Utah beer drinkers with the products they demand.”

Still, many beer companies say in industry conversations they’re planning to weigh the costs and benefits as the changes go into effect, Olsen ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Bagtown Brewing planned by a group of commerce students in Sackville
CBC News reports that a group of commerce students at Mount Allison University are laying the groundwork to open a nanobrewery in Sackville.

The launch of Bagtown Brewing is the end goal of an entrepreneurship class project that students Jane Rouse, Emily MacKinnon, Robbie Baxter and Anthony Maddalena are working on under the tutelage of professor Nauman Farooqi.

According to the article, the students have spent the fall semester establishing branding for the brewery, renting space in a former RCMP garage, and ordering brewing equipment. Assuming all licensing is completed on time, the partners plan to have the brewery up and running early in the new year.

Brewery news USA, WI: 1840 Brewing Company planning to join Milwaukee beer scene next year
At the tail end of an extraordinarily fruitful year for Milwaukee microbreweries, it’s looking as if the brewery boom is going to continue into 2017. Soon, 1840 Brewing Company will join local newcomers Good City, Third Space, MobCraft Beer, Black Husky Brewing, Like Minds, and Urban Harvest, as well as the likes of forthcoming Westallion and City Lights, Milwaukee Record reported on November 15.

The so-called “urban farmhouse brewery” is expected to open a modest brewing facility and taproom at 342 E. Ward Street in Bay View next spring. Though it’s going to be the latest in a long line of new Milwaukee microbreweries, 1840 will offer beer that’s strikingly different than much of its local brewing brethren.

According to Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 1840 owners and husband-wife team Kyle and Stephanie Vetter plan to specialize in aged beers, some of which will use wort.

“Using wort, or unfermented beer, and Old World techniques of blending and barrel-aging, Kyle will create beers that require from three months to three years to be ready. He calls blending the artistic side of brewing.”

Kyle Vetter tells Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he plans to have the (estimated 80-capacity) taproom open to the public one weekend a month. Once up and ...More info on site

Barley news Canada, SK: Saskatchewan’s late harvest impacting barley quality
Saskatchewan’s late harvest is impacting many – from farmers to beer lovers.

Barley, a key ingredient in most beer, has suffered through wet weather during key periods for the past two or three years, according to Viv Jones, brewmaster with Great Western Brewing in Saskatoon, Globalnews.ca reported on November 14.

“For this year, it started off reasonably well. But of course we had the snow in September and snow is not good for malted barley,” Jones said.

Brewers can tweak beer processing times and temperatures to alter the negative effects of barley downgrading.

However, Jones said the colour of a beer can “take a hit.”

“I don’t think the average drinker would notice, but we notice because we want everything to be consistent from batch to batch,” he said.

Staining and mildew are considered two of the leading concerns in barley downgrading in recent years.

“The stocks were very low going into this harvest and I feel like [brewers] are having a very difficult time filling their customers’ needs at this point,” said Blackstrap-area farmer Curtis Block.

Experts predict the rest of this year’s barley crop is more likely to become feed for animals than used as ingredients for beer.

“If it’s not off the field right now, it’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Lonsbery Farms Brewing Co. may open in Windsor before the end of the year
After a long five-year ramp up, Karl Lonsbery is hoping to finally realize his dream of opening a craft brewery before the end of the year, the Windsor Star reported on November 11.

Lonsbery has partnered with Tom Manherz, owner of the wildly successful Wolfhead Distillery in Amherstburg.

He’s relocated some $700,000 worth of brewing equipment from the family’s Harrow farm to Wolfhead’s location at 7781 Howard Ave.

Administration will recommend Amherstburg council amend the town’s official plan to allow breweries on agricultural land at November 14th’s council meeting.

“Local breweries and micro-breweries support the economy with additional local jobs, increase in tourist visits, and provide a locally made product for local residents to enjoy,” an administration report said. “The brewery industry further utilizes local products in the production of the beer and supports the local agricultural sector with the use of hops and grains.”

Lonsbery Farms Brewing Co. has been in the works for years. Lonsbery originally hoped to establish a farm-to-table production facility on the family’s 100-acre farm in Harrow.

That required dealing with the town of Essex for appropriate zoning amendments while also seeking out investors.

Then Manherz, who opened his craft distillery this past May, came into the picture.

“It made sense for both ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: From the Earth Brewing Company set to open in Roswell by late summer next year
There’ll be a new spot in metro Atlanta to cool down with a beer next summer.

From the Earth Brewing Company is set to open at 1570 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell by late summer 2017. The brewpub will feature a “chef-driven seasonal menu,” according to owner Tim Stevens, as well as craft cocktails, wine and on-site brewing, AJC.com reported on November 11.

Stevens — who has enlisted former Sweetwater brewmaster Kevin McNerney to assist on the beer side of things — said he plans to start with six core brews and eventually offer 10-12 beers brewed onsite, as well as local and regional guest taps.

The space will feature an 18-seat bar, seating for about another 70 inside and an outdoor patio with seating for 40-50 customers.

Stevens, who operates Barstools and Dreamer Restaurant Group, said he hopes to expand in the metro Atlanta area with other ventures. He was most recently the manager at Cook Hall in Buckhead and has also worked at Buckhead Life Restaurant Group and Nava, amongst others.

Brewery news Canada, AB: High Line Brewing to open its doors on November 18
A new brewery founded by three friends and homebrewers is set to open its doors and release its first beers to the public next week, Canadian Beer News reported on November 9.

High Line Brewing is being launched by partners J.J. Mathison, Kurt Wikel and Graham Dolce, with Mathison recently telling beer blog On Beer that the idea to open a brewery came out of the trio’s dissatisfaction with the local beer scene.

Located at 113-1318 9th Avenue S.E. in Calgary’s historic Inglewood neighbourhood, High Line features a five-barrel brewhouse and four 15-barrel tanks as a primary brewing system, as well as a two-barrel pilot system with several two-barrel tanks for smaller batch brewing.

According to the On Beer article, the brewery plans to offer “three to four year-round offerings supplemented by three to five seasonal or one-time beer” in cans and growlers for take-home sales, and by the glass in the 35 seat tasting room.

High Line will be holding its grand opening on Friday November 18th from 4:00 to 10:00 PM. Regular business hours will be 4:00 to 10:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, 12:00 noon to 10:00 PM on Saturday, and 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev cutting several products from its portfolio
Anheuser-Busch InBev is cutting several products, including its Budweiser Black Crown and Beck's Sapphire beers, from its US portfolio.

The brewery said the cuts are part of a "portfolio optimization initiative," Advertising Age reports.

Other products being cut include Oculto, a tequila-flavored beer, and Mixxtail, a cocktail-inspired line of drinks.

"Anheuser-Busch is consistently looking for ways to optimize our portfolio and deliver the right brands at the right time," an AB InBev spokeswoman told AdAge. "As part of that continual evaluation, we've decided to discontinue or re-align a selection of low-volume brands and flavor variants this spring."

Brewery news USA, TX: Holler Brewing Company opens its doors in Houston
In light of Karbach Brewing’s recent acquisition by Anheuser-Busch-InBev, plenty of Houstonians are looking for a new independently-owned local brewery. Fortunately, Holler Brewing Company has arrived just in time, Eater Houston reported on November 11.

A post to Holler Brewing Company’s Facebook page indicates that the brewery at 2206 Edwards quietly opened the doors on November 10 for its first soft-opening weekend. There is no word on whether or not Holler Brewing is ready to be open full-time just yet.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Riot Brewing launched in Chemanius
British Columbia beer news source What’s Brewing reports in its latest weekly newsletter that the province’s newest craft brewery has opened in Chemanius, a small town on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

Riot Brewing has been founded by Aly Tomlin and Ralf Rosenke, with veteran brewmaster Fabian Specht – previously at Central City, Howe Sound and Sailor Hagar’s – overseeing the brewhouse.

The brewery tasting room and retail store opened for the first time on November 10th, offering pours and growler fills of brands including Riot Lager, Riot Pale Ale and Riot IPA.

Riot Brewing is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.

Brewery news Vietnam: Carlsberg still in talks on ownership in Habeco – government officials
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has not yet completed talks to sell its ownership in the Ha Noi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Habeco) to the Danish brewer Carlsberg, according to officials, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 15.

At a meeting held on November 14 between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Prime Minister’s working group, officials said that it would take a while to complete the deal due to its complexity and its involvement of other ministries and sectors.

“Habeco and Carlsberg have discussed the deal, however, the two sides have not come to a final agreement yet,” Dung said. “The negotiation was quite complicated and we need to handle it carefully.”

"The sale of the State’s stake in Habeco must be transparent and based on market rules. It requires a lot of time and procedures," he said.

The department has sent a request to the Ministry of Justice for consultancy on the contract between Habeco and Carlsberg, the official said.

According to the strategic co-operation agreement between the two companies, Carlsberg is obliged to support Habeco in its development. In return, the Danish brewer can be prioritised to purchase Habeco’s strategic shares in case the MoIT decides to sell its ...More info on site

Brewery news World: AB InBev shares drop on report it may have its eyes on Coca-Cola as next acquisition target
Shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev ended down 1.85 percent on November 15 on a report that the brewer might have its eyes on U.S. beverage giant Coca-Cola for its next acquisition, CNBC reported.

InBev, the world's largest brewer, already completed a $107 billion purchase of SABMiller, but the Sunday Telegraph said Carlos Brito, the Belgian company's CEO, could be eyeing its next acquisition target, Coca-Cola. A deal for Coke, with a stock market capitalization of $176 billion, could provide a big bonus payday for InBev's top managers, the report said.

In intraday trading, InBev's U.S.-listed stock was down $4.26, or 4 percent, at $101.80. Coke's stock was flat.

It's not the first time Coca-Cola has been mentioned as a possible takeover target for InBev. PepsiCo also has been a rumored target in the past.

Under a so-called "2020 Dream Incentive Plan," which InBev has previously disclosed in U.S. regulatory filings, about 65 of the brewer's senior management can share in a bonus if its "ambitious growth target" of reaching at least $100 billion in annual revenue is reached. A deal for Coke, which had annual revenue last year of $44.3 billion, would likely put InBev's annual revenue over the $100 billion mark.

The bonus pool in ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Two Czech millionaires team up to bid for the country’s top brewery
Two Czech billionaires have teamed up in an effort to buy the country’s top brewery, Plzeňský Prazdroj, according to Hospodářské noviny. The country’s wealthiest man, Petr Kellner, and Pavel Tykač, fifth on the rich list, want to get their hands on the Pilsner Urquell-producer and other regional breweries being sold off by SABMiller.

Earlier this year the European Commission granted the world’s two biggest beer companies, Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller, approval to merge.

There was one major proviso. Most of SABMiller’s holdings in Europe have to be sold off so as to ensure competition in those markets remains healthy.

This also concerns Plzeňský Prazdroj, the Czech Republic’s leading maker and exporter of beer and the producer of its best-known brand, Pilsner Urquell.

Petr Kellner is the owner of the PPF investment group and the Czech Republic’s richest person. The country’s fifth wealthiest inhabitant is Pavel Tykač, who owns power company Czech Coal.

Hospodářské noviny reported on November 14 that Mr. Kellner had approached Mr. Tykač with a view to teaming up to make a bid of CZK 175 billion to SABMiller for Plzeňský Prazdroj and four other central European breweries.

The companies concerned are Slovakia’s Topvar, Dreher from Hungary, Romania’s Ursus and Kompania Piwowarska from Poland.
