THIOL PRECURSORS FROM HOPS AS A SOURCE FOR FRUITY BEERS
ABSTRACT
French researchers specifically looked into
4MMP, 3MH and 3MHA as fruity thiol components
in beer, but are also known in wines. In wine, these
components are in the juice from the grape as
precursors and liberated only during fermentation.
Analyzing the same precursors in hops they found a
concentration that was about 100 times of that found
in beer. Looking into kettle addition, fermentation and dry
hopping huge variations were found in the concentrations
of these precursors which leads to a lot of questions
that demand further research.

USA: Rahr Malting launches world’s largest single-site malting facility in Minnesota
|
The world’s largest single-site malting facility now operates in Shakopee, Minnesota, though its owners could have processed barley into beer ingredients elsewhere, the Star Tribune reported on November 19.
This fall, Rahr Corp. opened a new $68 million malt house, which processed its first batch of grain on November 15. As craft beer saturates the beverage industry, an on-site “research brewery” will open by spring so that small brewers can test new products using sophisticated equipment from Germany.
Rahr’s latest expansion depended on state and local tax-increment financing and is part of Shakopee’s subsidization of other big-name newcomers, like Amazon and Shutterfly, with the idea to create more jobs and build its industrial tax base. Rahr, which was originally Rahr Malting, moved to Shakopee from Manitowoc, Wis., in 1936. It also has operations in North Dakota, Washington and Canada, exporting malt primarily throughout North America, but also to international clients.
“Rahr is truly our oldest company here in Shakopee,” said Samantha DiMaggio, the city’s economic development coordinator. “If you can’t help the company that’s helped everyone in town, then you’re really failing, in my mind.”

Canada: Malting barley prices remain soft despite reports of quality issues
|
Despite reports of quality issues this year, malt barley prices are soft, as increased quantity put a damper on the market, the Alberta Express reported on November 18.
Spot malt barley prices are about C$4.75-C$4.85 per bushel in Western Canada, Prairie Ag Hotwire data said, which compares with last year’s harvest prices of about C$5.25-C$5.75.
“We do have a lot more quantity this year than last year. There’s fairly large quantities of unchitted, unsprouted barley, consequently the domestic maltsters are close to being full,” said Rod Green of Central Ag Marketing Ltd.
While domestic needs are mostly filled, ongoing exports are limiting further weakness in the market, he added.
Excess moisture throughout the growing season has caused some quality issues, he said, and producers are still assessing damage.
“Quality is maybe not looking as good as it did even a month ago,” he said.
“We’ve seen a lot of weather, which is never usually good for malt barley.”
The level of chitted — partially sprouted — barley was lower this year compared to last growing season, he said.
“But as we get further into this crop we’re seeing germination issues, so that’s not good.”

USA: Constellation Brands Inc. announces new $1 billion stock repurchase program
|
Constellation Brands Inc. announced on November 21 a new $1 billion stock repurchase program, which will be in addition to its existing $1 billion program, MarketWatch reported.
The company did not say when the new program expires. The new buyback program comes after Fitch Ratings upgraded the beer, wine and spirit's company's credit rating to BBB-, or to investment grade status, last week.
"We are pleased with our new Investment Grade status, which has been driven by our ability to continue to generate strong earnings and operating cash flow," Constellation Chief Financial Officer David Klein said. "This provides us with the flexibility to be opportunistic with future share repurchases while remaining committed to our 3.5x targeted leverage ratio."
The stock, which was little changed in premarket trade, has climbed 8.9% year to date through Friday, November 18, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.11% has gained 6.8%.

USA, ME: Island Dog Brewing to become South Portland’s third craft brewery
|
A nondescript office building behind the Maine Mall in South Portland may become home to the city’s third brewery, The Forecaster reported on November 17.
The new addition to the burgeoning local industry is Island Dog Brewing at 125 John Roberts Road.
The business, approved unanimously by the Planning Board on November 15, is owned by South Portland residents Jim Denz, his wife Jodie, and their friend and fellow brewer, Tim Francis.
Denz, of Berwick Street, is planning to build a brewery in about 4,200 square feet of space in Suite 15 in the one-story office park. It will specialize in “small batches of craft beer,” according to its application, and will include a tasting room and tavern, with capacity for 58 patrons.
Denz and his team still have to obtain the proper licenses for alcohol and food consumption from the state before getting City Council approval, but if all goes well, the plan is to open next April or May.
Denz is seeking a retail food establishment license to brew and sell beer and food for on site consumption, to sell growlers to go. He also seeks a commercial beer processing license to sell wholesale to local restaurants and bars.

USA, WI: Vintage Brewing Co. breaks ground on new facility in Sauk City
|
Officials at Vintage Brewing Co. broke ground on their new facility in Sauk City on November 21, WKOW reported.
The plans include a 10,000 square-foot brewery space in the sub-level of the building and upstairs will feature a restaurant, bar, indoor and outdoor seating areas and a seasonal beer garden.
It will also be able to accommodate events like wedding receptions up to 250 people.
The new building will overlook the Wisconsin River. Owners say this will allow them to get more creative with their brewing.
"It possibly frees up Whitney Way which is the smaller of the two breweries for more creative endeavors so we can do more test batches there," said Brewmaster Scott Manning. "There have been talks of doing more sours, which are really hot category right now."
The additional brewing capacity will allow Vintage to brew five times more beer than it can right now at its Whitney Way location. The brewery and restaurant are expected to open in the Fall of 2017, and will employ 80 to 100 people at the new location.

USA, CT: The Kilted Kinsmen Brewery aims at opening in Southington in February
|
The Southington Chamber of Commerce hosted The Kilted Kinsmen Brewery on November 16, which aims to open at the former Clark Brothers Bolt Company in February, the Bristol Press reported on November 19.
Bob Bartholomew, head brewer, and Mike Brennan, co-owner, of the brewery coming to the historic building at 409 Canal St., spoke to 40 owners of local businesses and nonprofit groups at The Orchards.
Bartholomew said The Kilted Kinsmen will have a full bar with craft beers, wine and hard liquor. Their craft beers will cover a variety of styles from New England style IPAs (Irish Pale Ales) to stouts, porters, and lagers.
“We will always offer guests the opportunities to taste the beer, from five-ounce pours to flights,” said Bartholomew. “We also plan to meet with Connecticut Beer Tours and become a part of their tours.”
Brennan said the company was started out of a love of craft beer.
“We put our heart and soul into it,” he said. “Our big focus is on IPAs; we use huge amounts of hops and are lighter on grain. I have been brewing locally for five years and Bob has been brewing in Maine.”

USA, NC: Sycamore Brewing building new production facility in Charlotte
|
Justin Brigham spent Tuesday, November 16 installing new fermenting tanks.
It’s something he and his wife Sarah Brigham have done several times since opening Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte, NC two years ago, but this time was different. At 20 feet tall and weighing 4,200 pounds, these tanks were much bigger than their predecessors — and they’re not going in the current facility, where there’s no more space, Charlotte Five reported.
The Brighams are building a production brewery at 401 W. 24th St., in the section of town many now refer to as North End. There they’ve found an ideal building for the task, with tall ceilings to accommodate those new tanks and a footprint of 30,000 square feet (with the possibility of expanding another 20,000 square feet).
Don’t expect another taproom here — this facility is all about volume, at least for now. Supplying the new 150-hectoliter fermenters will be a 50-hectoliter brewhouse, capable of brewing roughly 42 barrels of beer at a time.

USA, NY: Community Beer Works planning another brewery in Niagara Falls
|
The owners of Community Beer Works plan to open a craft brewing tavern next summer on Niagara Street in Niagara Falls where they'll brew at least 1,550 gallons a year, Buffalo News reported on November 17.
The Community Beer Works tavern at 324 Niagara will become the first brewery in Niagara Falls in the past 75 years, said Mayor Paul A. Dyster.
The $1.5 million investment by Community Beer Works and partners Buffalove Development and the Savarino Companies into the three-story, 4,300-square foot building was hailed as a sign of life in the city's struggling 300 block of Niagara Street, which once was lined with bars, but has more recently been a sign of the blight and decay that has plagued the City of Niagara Falls.
Community Beer Works plans to utilize all three floors of the building that housed the long-shuttered Press Box tavern. The company plans a first-floor tavern with interior and exterior seating to highlight the brewing equipment. A second floor will feature a gaming area equipped with an arcade, billiards, rolle bolle. The third floor will have meeting space.

USA: Altria Group increases its share in AB InBev
|
Altria Group, Inc. (a DiversityInc Noteworthy Company) filed a Schedule 13D with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission disclosing open market purchases of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (AB InBev) ordinary shares subsequent to the closing of the business combination with SABMiller, DiversityInc reported on November 21.
In November 2015, AB InBev and SABMiller announced their agreement to combine. On October 10, 2016, the transaction closed allowing Altria’s continued participation in the global beer profit pool. From October 11 through October 21, Altria purchased approximately 12 million ordinary shares of AB InBev. Including these shares, Altria now has approximately 10.2 percent ownership of AB InBev, and two seats on its Board of Directors.
Altria’s increased investment in AB InBev supports its strategy of managing diverse income streams to deliver consistent financial performance over time. In addition, for ownership levels at or above 10 percent, Altria is entitled to foreign tax credits available in connection with the dividends Altria receives from AB InBev, as it was with its former SABMiller investment.
Altria Group owned and operated Miller Brewing until 2002, when Miller Brewing merged with South African Breweries plc, forming the world’s second-largest brewer, SABMiller. Altria retained approximately 27 percent economic interest in SABMiller.

Saskatchewan’s Golden Opportunities Fund Inc. has emerged as the buyer of Fort Garry Brewing Company Ltd., the oldest local brewery in Manitoba, Winnipeg Free Press reported.
The sale of Fort Garry by current owners Russell Breweries Inc. was announced a month ago, but the buyer’s identity had been kept under wraps.
The Saskatoon-based labour-sponsored venture capital fund is paying C$7.7 million for the brewer of such local beers as Fort Garry Pale Ale and Frontier Pilsner.
It’s teamed up with local Winnipeg investors, including Winnipeg lawyer David Filmon and Charlie Spiring, founder and former CEO of Wellington West Capital.
Wanda Hunchak, vice-president of Westcap Mgt. Ltd., the entity that manages Golden Opportunities, said, "We’re very excited to bring Fort Garry back to 100 per cent Manitoba ownership."
Fort Garry was originally founded in 1930, acquired by Molson in 1960 and closed in 1990 after the merger of Molson and Carling O’Keefe.
The brand was revived in the mid-’90s by the late Richard Hoeschen, great-grandson of the founder, and then acquired by Russell in 2007.

USA, ME: Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery to open full-scale production facility in June or July
|
Daniel Pease said he started brewing beer in college as a hobby.
The Rockland businessman's interest in brewing led him to open Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery five years ago in downtown Rockland. Two years later he starting brewing at the Main Street location, the Village Soup reported on November 21.
And that has culminated in his purchase Friday, Nov. 18, of a Route 1 building in Rockland that will serve as a full-scale brewery production plant for Rock Harbor Brewing Co. Pease's goal is to have the brewery open in June or July.
Ten full-time jobs are expected to be created in the first two years, the businessman said.
Pease said the Route 1 location is the perfect spot for the brewery. The 5 Payne Ave. property had most recently been occupied by window retailer and manufacturer Mathews Brothers of Belfast.
Renovations are beginning immediately. He said the location in the city, along busy Route 1, a large facility, and adequate land made it the ideal location.

USA, TX: Altmeyer & Lewis Brewing Co. launching in San Marcos on November 19
|
Former homebrewers Stewart Altmeyer and Byron Lewis are proud to say they own the first production brewery in San Marcos, austin360 reported on November 16.
So far, the college town to the south of Austin has a handful of brewpubs, but Altmeyer & Lewis Brewing Co. is the first one — within city limits but outside the county — to operate with a production brewery license. The brewery will be officially up and running as from November 19 with a grand opening celebration that will serve as many locals’ first chance to try the four beers that the founding duo is offering.
The brothers-in-law who met because they married a pair of sisters have been avid homebrewers for many years and finally decided to make their hobby a business a few years ago. Although getting the proper permitting took longer than expected and required a move a little outside of town, they are “looking forward to officially opening, but we’re terrified at the same time,” Lewis said.

USA, MI: East West Brewing Co. set to open in Grand Rapids by the end of the year
|
Another brewery is set to open up in Grand Rapids by the end of the year, WOODTV.com reported on November 20.
East West Brewing Co. is finishing up construction at 1400 Lake Drive SE near Richard Terrace SE in the Eastown neighborhood.
Owner Balwinder Bal also runs Bombay Cuisine, which is in the same building as the new brewery. He worked with a brewery in Ann Arbor to come up with several craft brews made from locally sources ingredients.
The brewery will also serve farm-to-table American fare and specials from Bombay Cuisine.

USA: Molson Coors confirms cuts within MillerCoors
|
Personnel changes are starting in the wake of Molson Coors’ purchase of MillerCoors. The company made one key addition, but has also begun cutting positions across the U.S., Brewbound.com reported on November 18.
On November 17, Molson Coors named Tracey Joubert as its new chief financial officer. Joubert had been serving as the executive vice president and CFO of the company’s U.S. division, MillerCoors.
“We are very excited to have Tracey join our executive leadership team as our new CFO,” Molson Coors CEO Market Hunter said via the release. “I have had the privilege of working closely with Tracey for several years and am confident she is very knowledgeable about the Molson Coors organization, our commercial strategy and where we are heading as a bigger, better business.”
In a press release, Molson Coors said former CFO Mauricio Restrepo had resigned from his position because of “matters regarding personal conduct unrelated to the operations or financial statements of the company.”
Those aren’t the only changes being made by Molson Coors, however.
According to Pete Marino, the chief public affairs and communication officer at MillerCoors, six individuals based out of that division’s headquarters in Chicago will also be let go as a result of the acquisition.

EU: Sale of SABMiller’s eastern European assets draws attention as such highly priced deals don’t come along every day in the region

Multibillion-dollar takeover deals do not come along every day in central and Eastern Europe. That makes the €5 bln-plus auction of SABMiller’s eastern European brewing assets a focus of particular attention, the Financial Times reported on November 23.
The sale, which is part of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s £71 bln takeover of SABMiller, is expected to be finalised in coming weeks. It will help make this the biggest year for CEE takeovers by value for at least a decade.
While the chance to acquire beer brands is increasingly rare in a globally consolidated industry, other factors have driven the interest, too.
Hungary and Poland, home to two of the five assets, have governments that are championing the idea of repatriating businesses and brands.
This comes after post-communist privatisations saw large swaths of their economies end up in foreign hands. Another company is in the Czech Republic, which has the world’s highest per-capita beer consumption and a proud brewing heritage.

World: World’s largest brewers expanding their nonalcoholic beer offerings

After years of trying and failing to jump-start sales of alcohol-free beer, the world’s largest brewers are expanding their nonalcoholic offerings with renewed zeal, the Wall Street Journal reported on November 22.
Each of the new global Big Three in brewing— Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, Heineken NV and Carlsberg A/S—is investing in new technology, marketing and distribution for nonalcoholic beers like Budweiser Prohibition Brew, 0.0% MAXX and Nordic. They are betting stricter alcohol regulations and a shift toward healthier consumption will lift sales.
None of the companies breaks out its investments on alcohol-free beer. But Carlsberg recently outlined plans to, at minimum, double craft and nonalcoholic beer volumes from 6% to 12% by 2022. And AB InBev has said at least a fifth of its beer volume world-wide will be no or low alcohol by the end of 2025, up from 6% currently.
“Nonalcoholic beer is growing three times faster than the overall beer market and offers some excellent margin opportunities,” Carlsberg Chief Executive Cees ’t Hart said earlier this year.

The Netherlands: Heineken prices EUR500 mln of Notes
|
Heineken N.V. announced on November 22 that it has successfully placed long 10-year Notes with a coupon of 1.375% for a principal amount of €500 million.
The Notes will be issued under the Company's Euro Medium Term Note Programme and will be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
The proceeds from the Notes issuance will be used for general corporate purposes. The maturity date of the Notes is 29 January 2027.
Barclays, Crédit Agricole, HSBC and Rabobank acted as book runners and ABN Amro, ANZ, Banca IMI, MUFG and Raiffeisen Bank International as co-managers.

Belgium: AB InBev to cut investments in Hoegaarden beer

Leuven, Belgium-based brewer AB InBev will not invest as much anymore in its wheat beer Hoegaarden, because the beer is no longer a European priority. The money will go to other beers, like Hoegaarden's radler varieties, Retail Detail Europe reported on November 21.
For a long time, AB InBev invested a lot in Hoegaarden, a very well-known beer in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. It is also available in other European countries like the United Kingdom, but nevertheless, the brewery feels it only has a limited growth potential.
Sales in Belgium and the Netherlands have been stable for a while and the brand has even slumped slightly in France. Other brands have also noticed wheat beer's waning popularity, both locally and abroad. "We mainly sell our Vedett White wheat beer abroad, in countries like Japan and China", brewery Duvel Moortgat said. "The local demand is small, because Belgium has an abundance of craft beers."

Turkey: Anadolu Efes CEO leaving his position as of December 31
|
Turkey’s largest beer maker Anadolu Efes has announced that Robin Michael Goetzsche, who has been serving as its president and CEO since November 2015, will be leaving his position as of Dec. 31, the Hurriyet Daily News reported on November 21.
A statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) on Nov. 21 said Goetzsche will be leaving due to personal reasons.
Effective as of Jan. 1, 2017, John Gavin Hudson, who has been working as the managing director of Efes Russia, will replace him and will report directly to Anadolu Efes’ Board of Directors, said the statement.
Efes Russia’s CFO Roy Alan Cornish will be appointed as acting managing director of Efes Russia, in addition to resuming his current position.
Hudson joined SABMiller South Africa in 1992, according to the statement.
He has served in several executive positions in marketing, sales, distribution and general management roles within SABMiller.
Hudson was appointed as the Sales Vice President of SABMiller operations in Colombia in 2011 and resumed this role until January 2016, when he was appointed as Managing Director of Efes Russia, added the statement.

Ireland: Heineken to face no sanctions over selling of mislabelled products

Heineken will face no sanctions after some of its products were mislabelled and sold as craft beer in a small number of pubs around Ireland, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Hospitality Ireland reported on November 21.
A joint investigation between the FSAI and HSE was launched last month after Heineken Ireland had reportedly sold products, such as Foster's, as being 'locally produced' beers called Blasket Blonde and Beanntraí Bru. Other mislabelled Heineken products included stouts from Beamish and Murphy's, as well as Tipperary-based C&C drinks company selling its Clonmel 1650 lager as 'Pana Cork' in Co Cork pubs, reports The Sunday Times.
The FSAI and HSE released a statement which said that they had "investigated the various complaints made and are satisfied that where necessary appropriate action was taken by the implicated food businesses by either ceasing the practice of marketing beer under names which incorrectly suggest a local provenance, or amending labelling and marketing information".
