THIOL PRECURSORS FROM HOPS AS A SOURCE FOR FRUITY BEERS
ABSTRACT
French researchers specifically looked into
4MMP, 3MH and 3MHA as fruity thiol components
in beer, but are also known in wines. In wine, these
components are in the juice from the grape as
precursors and liberated only during fermentation.
Analyzing the same precursors in hops they found a
concentration that was about 100 times of that found
in beer. Looking into kettle addition, fermentation and dry
hopping huge variations were found in the concentrations
of these precursors which leads to a lot of questions
that demand further research.

Myanmar: Kirin Holdings wants to lead rivals in Myanmar
|
With beer consumption shrinking in China and other major markets, Southeast Asia has become a key growth target for the beer industry.
In 2015, Japan's Kirin Holdings seized the chance to acquire Myanmar Brewery, which holds an 80% share of the country's market.
Hajime Kobayashi, deputy director of the brewer's corporate strategy, recently told The Nikkei Asian Review about the attraction of the Southeast Asian market and how Kirin plans to cope with the competition.
Q: How did Kirin tap into Myanmar?
A: We initially took an interest in the soft drink business in Southeast Asia and acquired a 15% stake in Singaporean beverage giant Fraser and Neave in 2010.
However, when Fraser and Neave was taken under the umbrella of its rival Thai Beverage in 2013, we decided to unload our stakes and acquire a 55% stake in Myanmar Brewery.
Q: Was Kirin interested in the Myanmar beer market from the outset?
A: We have wanted to be the No. 1 brewery in Asia and Oceania since the time former President Kazuyasu Kato was at the helm. Asia is also an important market for the group's portfolio, given its proximity to Japan and growth potential.

UK: San Miguel beer sales grow and place it at a “critical point”
|
San Miguel is looking to profit from British consumers’ growing interest in global beers as sales volumes edge towards the category’s “elite” brands, Marketing Week reported on November 24.
The Spanish beer’s senior brand manager Dharmesh Rana tells Marketing Week the increased sales have placed the brand at a “critical point”.
“In the next couple of weeks we will join an elite club of British brands [that sell over] one million hectolitres. We will be one of eight brands in that club. That takes a fair bit of growing [for us], especially when the category has been in decline,” he says.
Mintel figures back up Rana’s claims. Overall beer volumes in the UK have been broadly flat since 2012, around the 4.2 billion litres mark. Lager in particular seems to be struggling, with volume sales falling from 3.18 billion litres in 2014 to an estimated 3.15 billion litres in 2015.
To accelerate the brand’s growth, San Miguel is hoping to capitalise on the current trend among British consumers for “beers from around the world” and will change when and where it advertises.

Belgium: Belgium asking Unesco to add its brewing tradition to global culture list

From brown ales to golden pilsners to the strong trappist brews produced in monasteries, Belgian beer is enjoyed around the world.
Now, Belgium is asking the United Nations' heritage body to add its beer-making and drinking culture to a list of traditions worth protecting, saying that brewing fosters a unified identity in a country with three official languages, Reuters reported on November 25.
The country is home to nearly 200 breweries making 1,500 different beers, according to the trade association Belgian Brewers, which prepared Belgium's application. National dishes also include beer and the country has some 30 brewing museums.
Submitted by Belgium's German-speaking region to UNESCO, the application says beer brewing improves the well-being of Belgian people by stimulating the economy, promoting local products and strengthening social ties.
The history and broad variety of brews available make Belgium's beer industry stand out from other brewing traditions around the world, the submission says.
UNESCO's 'intangible heritage' committee meets next week in Addis Ababa and will determine whether Belgian beer culture and 36 other practices such as Indian yoga and Czech and Slovak puppetry should enter its list.

Rwanda: The Kickstarter campaign helps the Rwanda Craft Brewery Project raise more funds than originally targeted

Canadian craft brewery Beau’s All Natural Brewing has announced that the fundraising project launched in September to assist the development of a new craft brewery in Rwanda has surpassed its target goal, Canadian Beer News reported on November 21.
The Kickstarter campaign for the Rwanda Craft Brewery Project wrapped up last week with a total of C$110,400 pledged by 1,138 backers, well above the original target of C$95,000.
Brewery entrepreneur Josephine “Fina” Uwineza thanked all of those who donated, noting that “we are definitely connected, we are definitely similar, even miles and miles from each other.”
Beau’s co-founder Steve Beauchesne added that he is happy with the fundraising result, but that it is just the beginning of a long process to get the brewery in Rwanda up and running. “There is still more equipment, as well as shipping and installing it, and training, as well as the initial operations,” he says in a statement. “But there’s no doubt this will greatly help the project move forward.”

USA: 2016 a record year for US hop growers
|
2016 was a record year for United States hop growers.
“We had more acres in production in the U.S. than at any other time in history,” said Bill Elkins, an account manager with Hopsteiner, a Yakima Valley-based firm that grows, trades, breeds and processes hops, Brewbound.com reported.
For the second consecutive year, the U.S. planted more hops (52,962 acres) than Germany (45,957 acres) as farmers expanded their operations to accommodate for increased hop production.
Since 2012, U.S. hop production has increased by 50 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The majority of the U.S. hop production comes from the Pacific Northwest, with 51,115 acres of hops planted in Oregon, Idaho and Washington, and a record-high 91.8 million pounds of hops are expected to be harvested from the region this year.
Those hops, most of which have already been purchased under contract by brewers, will find their way into thousands of different brews in 2017.
