SELECT THE PRUNING DATE FOR HOPS CAREFULLY
ABSTRACT
It is easy to imagine that the harvest date has a
big influence on the hop oil content and hop oil
composition of the harvested hops. A couple of studies
have shown this already. These Japanese researchers
delved far deeper into factors influencing the final hop
aroma in hops and looked specifically at the variety
Saaz to determine if pruning date is important. By
collecting extensive data throughout four harvest
years in four different regions, they found that harvest
time was the most influential factor in determining
hop aroma characteristics among the various factors
in cultivation. They also found that the chemical compounds associated with floral, fruity, and citrusy characteristics are highly dependent on the harvest
time or pruning date. This is a further confirmation of
our Barth-Haas hypothesis – it seems that everything
you do matters in terms of flavour with hops!.

Vietnam: Carlsberg says Habeco share price fuelled by speculative buying
|
Carlsberg A/S, the Danish brewer that wants to buy a majority stake in Hanoi Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., said a surge in the Vietnamese company’s share price has been fuelled by speculative buying, setting the stage for heated negotiations in Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing beer market, Bloomberg reported on November 27.
A near tripling of Habeco’s price since its Oct. 28 listing on Vietnam’s regulated over-the-counter exchange doesn’t accurately reflect the underlying value of the business as it’s “mainly due to speculative buying on very thin volume,” Tayfun Uner, chief executive officer of Carlsberg Vietnam, said in an interview in Hanoi.
Habeco shares closed as high as 144,700 dong ($6.40) this month after initially being listed at 39,000 dong, a price Uner described as fair. The government announced in August it wants to sell its 82 percent stake for $404 million, or about 48,000 dong a share, which according to Uner is a reasonable valuation.
Vietnam is in the midst of restructuring state ownership of Habeco in the north and top brewer Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., known as Sabeco, in the country’s south. The potential divestment is drawing interest from the world’s largest brewers including Heineken NV, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and Asahi Group

Vietnam: Heineken may be given green light to increase production capacity in Ba Ria-Vung province soon
|
Heineken Vietnam Brewery may be given soon the go-ahead to increase the capacity of its beer production factory in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau to 610 million litres per year from the existing 50 million litres, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 29.
This information was published on the MoIT’s website. The adjustment is based on Vietnam’s plan on beer, wine, and beverage production to 2025 with a vision to 2035. According to the forecast in the plan, the volume of beer consumed in the country is expected to reach 4.1 billion litres per year by 2020. The figure may be 3.3 billion litres already in 2016. Thus, the adjustment seems suitable with the above plan.
The Ba Ria-Vung Tau Industrial Zones Management Authority asked Heneiken Vietnam to carry out a survey on market demand as well as the necessary infrastructure. Besides, Heneiken Vietnam will have to determine the specific capacity for each phase of expansion.
Earlier, in late August, Heineken Vietnam completed the purchase of Carlsberg Breweries A/S’s entire holding, equalling 55 per cent, in Carlsberg Vietnam Breweries-Vung Tau JSC, a joint venture between Carlsberg and Hanoi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Habeco). The stakes were transferred at a

Vietnam: Sabeco to be officially listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange on December 6
|
On December 6, Vietnam's largest brewer Saigon Alcohol, Beer and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) will be officially listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, eight years after its initial public offering in January 2008, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 29.
According to newswire Vneconomy, 641 million Sabeco shares, representing a chartered capital of VND6.41 trillion ($286.67 million), will be available for trading at the initial reference unit price of VND110,000 ($4.84) under the ticker SAB.
After the listing, Sabeco’s capitalisation is expected to reach VND70 trillion ($3.13 billion), propelling it into the ranks of the top five enterprises on the HoSE in terms of capitalisation, following Vinamilk, Vietcombank, PV Gas and Vingroup.
Earlier, on September 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved Sabeco’s proposal to list on the HoSE. Listing on a stock exchange was an imperative condition for state divestment from Sabeco.
Sabeco consolidated its reputation as the top beer producer in Vietnam with a nine-month revenue of over VND21.8 trillion ($974.95 million), up 9 per cent on-year, of which beer made up 86 per cent of total sales, equivalent to VND18.8 trillion ($840.78 million), or 1.2 billion litres of beer.
Its consolidated after-tax profit reached nearly VND3.66 trillion ($165.47 million), up

Russia: Russia’s craft beer labels seen as a relatively inexpensive luxury amid crisis
|
A staple drink of Russia’s recession comes in different flavors but it’s best consumed standing up. Food is optional.
Not a beer country until the arrival a decade ago of a central European tradition of sit-down bars that married brews with hearty meals, Russia is now revelling in the new craft labels that have exploded in popularity during the nation’s longest recession this century. The number of Russian microbreweries soared 10-fold in the past five years, and almost all of Moscow’s 100 or so watering holes serving craft beer opened in the last two years after the rouble’s crash left some local brews costing less than half the price for imported beer, Bloomberg reported on November 29.
“It’s a relatively inexpensive luxury,” said Douglas Zent, a Texan who’s been the financial muscle behind Moscow Region-based Victory Art Brew.
While the craft beer revolution may have been decades late to touch down in Russia, it’s caught on as inflation and a currency crisis gutted salaries, forcing people to make do with less. The new names on offer are taking off not just by appealing to the palate but also by sparing the wallet. What’s more, the dives serve up craft beer as part of

Belgium: Belgium's unique beer culture inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
|
Belgium's unique beer culture has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN agency announced on November 30.
"Making and appreciating beer is part of the living heritage of a range of communities throughout Belgium. It plays a role in daily life, as well as festive occasions," UNESCO said in a press release.
Almost 1,500 types of beer are produced in the country using different fermentation methods, while some Trappist communities have also been involved in beer production giving profits to charity, it noted.
UNESCO also praised Belgium's efforts to pass down the traditional skills and knowledge in the beer industry.
"Besides being transmitted in the home and social circles, knowledge and skills are also passed down by master brewers who run classes in breweries, specialised university courses that target those involved in the field and hospitality in general, public training programs for entrepreneurs, and small test breweries for amateur brewers," it said.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel posted the news on his Twitter account, and invited people to "come on to Belgium and taste it."
Meanwhile, culture ministers of Belgium's three linguistic communities (Dutch, French and German) issued

Spain: Mahou San Miguel launches new craft beer division
|
Spanish beer promoter Cervecera Independiente announced the launch of microbrewery Nómada Brewing's craft beers on November 25, ESM Magazine reported.
The company, which is the 'new business' division of Mahou San Miguel and aims to develop and drive beer culture in Spain, introduced the line made by Javier Aldea and Sami Claret, who founded the microbrewery in 2011.
The eleven beers are the first craft range developed fully at the R&D facilities of Mahou San Miguel in Alovera, Guadalajara.
The range will be available in select retailers and features labels designed by young artists.
The beers are divided into three production lines: an 'everyday' beer, available throughout the year, and the seasonal and limited edition beers, which will only be sold at certain times of year.

UK & India: Scotch Whisky Association urges government to prioritise free-trade agreement with India
|
Following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has urged the government to prioritise a free-trade agreement with India, reports Drinks Business.
“Brexit poses challenges and uncertainty but also brings opportunities if the UK can secure favourable bilateral trade deals with key export markets”, said David Frost, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive.
“India, for example, is a growing market for Scotch but we are being held back by a 150% import tariff. EU talks with India have proved challenging for a decade now and we hope the UK will now take a fresh approach to securing an ambitious trade agreement.”
Given the changed scenario, Beam Suntory is betting on increased business with India and has launched two peated single malts in the market – The Ardmore Legacy and Bowmore 12 Year Old.
Launched under its Peated Malts of Distinction portfolio, the whiskies join Islay malt Laphroaig 10 Year Old, and signal the company’s continued commitment to the India market, where it sees huge potential.
“India is one of the world’s leading Scotch markets, and we expect these incredible brands to become exclusive and aspirational expressions in India,” said Beam Suntory in a statement announcing their release. “We are confident that
