SELECT THE PRUNING DATE FOR HOPS CAREFULLY
ABSTRACT
It is easy to imagine that the harvest date has a
big influence on the hop oil content and hop oil
composition of the harvested hops. A couple of studies
have shown this already. These Japanese researchers
delved far deeper into factors influencing the final hop
aroma in hops and looked specifically at the variety
Saaz to determine if pruning date is important. By
collecting extensive data throughout four harvest
years in four different regions, they found that harvest
time was the most influential factor in determining
hop aroma characteristics among the various factors
in cultivation. They also found that the chemical compounds associated with floral, fruity, and citrusy characteristics are highly dependent on the harvest
time or pruning date. This is a further confirmation of
our Barth-Haas hypothesis – it seems that everything
you do matters in terms of flavour with hops!.

USA & Australia: ADM sells its 19.9% stake in GrainCorp
|
U.S. agricultural commodities trader Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has sold its 19.9 per cent stake in GrainCorp to underwriters UBS, just three years after a failed bid to wholly acquire the Australian grain handler, ADM said on December 1.
The sale to the Swiss bank was valued at A$387 million (C$382 million), or A$8.53 (C$8.42) a share, ADM said.
ADM’s A$2.8 billion bid to buy Australia’s largest listed grain handler was blocked by government regulators in 2013 near the peak of a grain market boom.
Commodities prices have since tumbled and ADM and rival agribusinesses are focusing increasingly on higher-margin businesses such as natural food ingredients and specialty commodities to boost slumping returns.
“This transaction will allow us to further reduce our invested capital, and it will provide cash that we can redeploy to higher-return investments,” ADM CEO Juan Luciano said in a statement.
ADM had been shopping its GrainCorp stake this year, but was unable to find a buyer for the entire stake and canceled the sale process in July 2016, sources said.
GrainCorp’s Canadian grain handling and processing assets include Calgary-based malt processor Canada Malting, which GrainCorp acquired in 2009 when it took over United Malt Holdings.

USA: More than 100 members of Congress ask the federal government for bigger hop research commitment
|
More than 100 members of Congress are asking the federal government to increase its commitment to research related to growing hops, AP reported on December 1.
The lawmakers say the brewing industry generated more than $250 billion in economic activity in 2014.
Yakima Valley Hops and Brew Supply owner John Snyder said that the hop industry was kind of a hidden giant up until it started to generate billions of dollars.
With most of the nation’s hops being grown in the Yakima Valley he hopes that government doesn’t get involved just to add more regulations and gain revenue.
"If the state wants to get more involved in hop production that's great I mean if that means more money to our public breeding program that's amazing, if their saying mites and they want something that's more pest resistant and higher yields, naturally that's what a farmer wants anyway," said John Snyder.
According to the Washington Beer Commission the Yakima Valley contains approximately 75-percent of the total hop acreage in the U.S. with an average farm size of 450-acres.

USA, VA: Hawksbill Brewing receives the last of the brewing equipment, hopes to open in spring of 2017
|
Page County's first brewery is getting closer and closer to completion. On Wednesday, November 30, the last of the brewing equipment arrived at Hawksbill Brewing, WHSV reported.
Over the past year, the owners have worked through zoning ordinances and building plans. This time last year, they were still looking for a building and were just in the planning phase of the operation.
"It feels great, you get to look back each day and there's something tangible, I mean it's much like farming, when we're done at the end of the day, you look back and there's something done, tangible and it makes you feel good," said brewery operations manager David Sours.
The brewery will use local hops and other seasonal ingredients in its brews. It will also add at least 10 jobs.
While there is still work to be done, Sours says they are looking forward to opening.
Sours added, "there's a lot of excitement, I mean a lot. Wherever we go, somebody's asking about, when we're going to open, all those good things so we're very excited and the community seems to be excited to have us and looking forward to supporting us."
Sours said they hope to open in spring of 2017.

France & USA: Remy Cointreau acquires American single malt whiskey maker Westland Distillery
|
French spirits group Remy Cointreau, the maker of Remy Martin cognac, struck a deal to buy American single malt whiskey maker Westland Distillery, in order to expand its portfolio of premium spirits, domain-b.com reported on December 2.
Remy Cointreau, a producer of cognac, liqueurs and spirits, did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close before the end of the year.
With this acquisition, Rémy Cointreau said that it will expand its portfolio further into the fast growing high-end single malt whisky category.
Based in Seattle, Washington, Westland Distillery produces whiskey with a distinct American single malt style.
Westland boasts a portfolio of high-end single malts, with a price range of between $70 and $125.
Rémy Cointreau said, ''Westland's mission is to produce world-class American single malt whiskey. Rooted in one of the world's best possible climates for barley, Westland crafts a truly authentic single malt whiskey with a sense of place.''
''The distillery is firmly committed to pushing the category of single malt whiskey forward by utilising new varietals of barley and oak, exploring concepts such as terroir, and championing distinctiveness,'' it added.

USA, CO: Cheluna Brewing Company to be inaugurated on December 1
|
After months of drawn-out construction, Cheluna Brewing Company will be the second business to open inside north Aurora’s Stanley Marketplace on Dec. 1, the new brewery announced on social media last month.
Cheluna, formerly known as Casita Brewing Co. before a naming spat spurred the owners to change the title, will open with a small celebration the evening of Dec. 1, according to co-owner Javiér Pérez.
Pérez began laying the groundwork for Cheluna, along with his wife, Jennifer, in 2014, after nearly 25 years of home brewing in the couple’s garage. Many of Javiér’s beers blend his mixed Mexican and German ancestry, he told The Sentinel in an interview last year.
Pérez, who daylights as an emergency room physician at the VA Hospital in Denver, said he chose to open his first brick-and-mortar at Stanley in part because the neighborhoods around the future market have long been under-served.
“It’s a dry watering hole and now it’s going to be full for all the people around here,” he said in August. “This is going to be a breath of fresh air.”
Pérez, guided by friends at Spangalang Brewing in Denver’s Five Points, has been heading the brewing operations at Cheluna.

USA, NC: Divine Barrel Brewing hoping to open next summer in Charlotte

There’s a degree of risk involved when opening any new brewery, but especially so for those specializing in sour beers, Charlotte Five reported on November 30.
“When you start dealing with the wild yeasts and the bacteria, you control what you can control the best you can,” said Ben Dolphens, who with his wife, Mary Catherine, will open Divine Barrel Brewing at 3701 N. Davidson St., Charlotte next summer. “They are just more fickle than the more domesticated ale and lager strains that we all brew with. Even though you do what you can, you’re still slightly at the mercy of those organisms.”
That’s where the “divine” comes into play. Dolphens has homebrewed for more than 15 years and was a trade brewer for Tenth and Blake, the craft and import division of MillerCoors, until last year.
But even with all his years of experience, Dolphens acknowledges that sometimes you have to give sour and wild beers time to develop. And when you do, the result can be a thing of beauty.

Australia: Chinese demand pushes up Australian barley prices
|
Chinese demand has pushed up Australian barley prices by A$10-16 a tonne in the past month, the Weekly Times Now reported on December 1.
Malt barley prices have jumped by about A$16/tonne two months ago to A$212/tonne delivered Geelong, while feed barley has increased A$12/tonne from early October to A$177.
Emerald Grain south east Australia regional manager Brad Cullen said Chinese demand for barley had lifted the feed market, along with a fall in the Australian dollar. The Australian dollar has dropped about US1c in the past month and on Monday, November 28 was at US74c.
“Chinese demand is starting to line up and it’s spurring barley demand, along with harvest pressure,” he said.
CBH Group reported growers selling feed barley for $200/tonne free in store last week.
“Interest has picked up from customers within China and there’s also the possibility of seeing Saudi Arabia in the market early in the New Year,” CBH trading general manager Jason Craig said.
Canola values have also lifted about A$23/tonne since early October and on November 28 non-GM canola delivered Geelong was worth A$540, but in Western Australia prices were even higher: free in store canola delivered Kwinana was being traded at A$580 on November 25.

The Czech Republic: Pub beer prices may rise as government launches online sales-reporting system
|
The Czech government launched an online sales-reporting system on December 1 for around 40,000 bars, restaurants and hotels in a bid to cut tax avoidance, but raising concern that prices will jump and many pubs at the centre of village life around the country will close, Reuters reported.
The "EET" system requires outlets to report every transaction online and print out a receipt that can be matched against its transaction database.
The Finance Ministry is hoping to bring in up to 660 million euros in extra tax revenue a year once the system is extended to all retail outlets over the next two years. The value-added tax on meals has been cut to 15 percent from 21 percent to help pubs bear the cost.
The chamber of commerce has been supportive of the law as it will help honest businesses. But small-business representatives say the costs of getting cash registers, Internet connections and running the system will be too high in an already stretched sector.
Plzensky Prazdroj, the largest brewery group and maker of Pilsner Urqell, said hundreds of pub customers have stopped ordering kegs, indicating that at least some were closing.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria inaugurates spirit production line at its Edo brewery
|
Guinness Nigeria plc has inaugurated a N4.8 billion spirit production line at its brewery in Edo State to begin local production of affordable spirit drinks that were previously imported, WorldStage reported on December 1.
Chairman of the company's Board of Director, Mr. Babatunde Savage disclosed at the inauguration that the move was to reduce its spending on imports and increase export with a view to generating foreign exchange.
Savage said more jobs would be created in the state as raw materials like maize and sorghum to be used for the new line would be sourced locally.
Savage also said the company was doing its best to survive in an environment he described as tough.
He said the company would appreciate an enabling environment under which it can grow its business, increase the number of people employed directly and indirectly and create shared prosperity for all its stakeholders.
"Today, we add to that strong heritage with the commissioning of our spirits production line in Nigeria – a first for Guinness Nigeria. What this means is that we are able to offer a wider variety of products to our consumers at a more affordable price point,” he said.

UK: Craft beer accounts for almost 10% of the 100 hot brands for the pub sector

Almost 10% of the 100 hot brands for the pub sector in the UK have been taken by craft beer brands, The Morning Advertiser reported on November 30.
The nine beers – Shipyard American Pale Ale, Dark Star Hophead, Meantime Pale Ale, Camden Town Pale Ale, BrewDog Punk IPA, Camden Hells Lager, Innis & Gunn Lager, Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and Brooklyn Lager, made it into the Drinks List: Top 100 Brands.
This is the first top 100 brands list, compiled by The Morning Advertiser in association with research firm CGA Strategy. The list looked at both alcoholic and soft drinks, ranking the brands on the basis of consumer preference and sales metrics.
BrewDog IPA came in as the top craft beer in the listings, with the ‘punk revolution’ leading the charge in the craft beer category.
This was followed by Shipyard American Pale Ale, which Marston’s brews in the UK in collaboration with US-based Shipyard Brewing Company. Marston’s puts the popularity down to the beer being “special and unique” to capture people’s attention.
Next was Camden Pale Ale, which has caught consumer attention and could have been boosted by its wider distribution following AB InBev’s acquisition of the brewer.
