SPEBU - A NEW ALTERNATIVE
METHOD FOR BITTERNESS?
ABSTRACT
A combination of Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) to
the BU method was established already in 2011 by
Wietstock. Now after further optimisation and more
ring studies, this method is presented by a U.S.
researcher team. The accuracy is comparable to current
methodology and with no need for iso-octane is more
environmentally friendly and also economical.

Thailand: Craft beer movement in Thailand stifled by archaic law protecting interests of large firms
|
The increase in craft beer in Thailand faces an archaic law that protects the interests of large firms and has forced many brewers to cross the borders to ferment their drinks legally, the Latin American Herald Tribune reported on December 16.
During weekends, Koh Kret, an artificial island in Nonthaburi province, to the north of Bangkok, witnesses craft brewers from across the country coming together to share their latest creations at a local bar considered as the Mecca of craft beer.
“I have thrice had problems with the police. Three times they have tried to close the joint. All three times I asked the officials, are the laws fair? I don’t know how much time we have left, but I know that sooner or later change will come to Thailand,” Wichit Siklao, considered the dean of craft beer in the country, told EFE.
Brewing beer for private or commercial use is illegal according to a Thai law dating back to 1950, which stipulates fines of between 500 and 5,000 baht ($14-140) or up to six months of imprisonment for offenders.
However, the law allows for a special license for companies with a capital above 10 million baht ($280,000) and a production higher than 10

UK: Heineken agrees to buy 1,900 Punch Tavern PLC pubs across the UK
|
Heineken NV struck a £305 million ($383 million) deal on December 15 to nearly triple the number of pubs the Dutch brewer owns across the U.K., pushing further into a high-margin business that will allow it to sell more Heineken brands here, Reuters reported.
Heineken has agreed to buy 1,900 Punch Taverns PLC pubs from private-equity company Patron Capital Advisers LLP. The deal would follow Patron’s acquisition of Punch Taverns—which owns a total of about 3,000 pubs—in a transaction valuing the U.K.’s second-largest pub chain at £402.7 million. Heineken’s payment for its share of Punch’s pubs includes the assumption of £962.3 million in debt.
Heineken first entered the U.K. pub market in 2008 with its acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle’s operations here. It owns 1,049 pubs, which it says have helped it reach consumers directly, allowing it to test-market new draft beverages while learning what pub managers want. Pubs also are a higher-margin business than selling beer in the U.K. through other channels.
The December 15th’s deal would turn Heineken into the third-largest pub operator in the U.K.
Pub owners decide which beers are stocked and how they are showcased, so owning more pubs means Heineken will get to sell its brands — such

USA & Japan: US Brooklyn Brewery to start brewing its lager in Japan in February
|
New York-based Brooklyn Brewery will start producing lager in Shiga Prefecture in February under a partnership with Kirin Co. to tap into Japan’s growing craft beer market, the U.S. brewer’s CEO said Dec. 15.
Eric Ottaway told The Asahi Shimbun his company’s signature beverage, Brooklyn Lager, will be bottled at Kirin’s Shiga factory in Taga, mainly for delivery to restaurants and bars across Japan.
Brooklyn Lager is known for its citrusy flavor. But Ottaway said different types of beer will eventually be produced at the factory, and he hopes to develop unique products using Japanese fruits and spices.
First joining hands in October, Brooklyn Brewery and Kirin plan to establish a joint company in January to produce and sell craft beer. The two companies’ sales target is about 500 kilolitres of Brooklyn Brewery beer in the first year.
The Japanese craft beer market has more than tripled in size over the past five years. Shipments of microbrew in 2016 are estimated at 47,000 kL, compared with 14,000 kL in 2011.

Jamaica & USA: Jamaican-brewed Red Stripe beer is back in the USA
|
The first cases of iconic Red Stripe Beer, produced once again in the brand’s homeland of Jamaica, arrive on U.S. retail store shelves and bar & restaurant beer menus as the brand readies its aggressive plan to energize growth in the U.S., Brewbound reported on December 15.
Following the acquisition of a controlling stake of Red Stripe in October 2015, HEINEKEN has successfully brought production of the beloved brand home as part of the company’s broader mission to deliver true import brands that exemplify the transparency and authenticity consumers expect and deserve.
After months of planning, staff recruiting, training and equipment upgrades, Red Stripe made good on its commitment to return production of U.S. volumes to Jamaica in September 2016. The highly anticipated repatriation has already begun to yield significant benefits for the company, the brand and the Jamaican economy.
“We are extremely proud that we have been able to deliver on this commitment. With every bottle made right here in Jamaica, the brand’s authentic Jamaican appeal has been boosted,” said Ricardo Nuncio, Red Stripe’s Managing Director.
The company also hired 80 new workers to support the increase in production. The mainly technical operators work in packaging and logistics.
“This is probably the best outcome

Japan: Suntory planning to increase its overseas whisky exports to 50%
|
Japanese spirits producer Suntory is planning to increase its overseas whisky exports to 50%, up from current 10%, the company’s brand ambassador, Mike Miyamoto, was quoted as saying by the Drinks Business on December 15.
“In the last five years or so, exports took off, however, we have less than 10% of our production exported abroad, most of it is still consumed at home. I’d like to see 50% sold abroad and 50% domestic market. That’s our goal,” Miyamoto said at a Suntory masterclass in Hong Kong on 14 December.
The US, the company’s oldest export market, dominates the export market share, followed by Europe, Taiwan and Singapore, Miyamoto revealed, noting that Hong Kong is an up-and-coming market for Japanese whisky where its ‘Yamazaki’, ‘Hakushu’ and ‘Hibiki’ series are available in Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China through ASC Fine Wines.
Speaking of the differences between Japanese whiskies and whiskies from other countries, Miyamoto noted the use of the ‘Mizunara’ cask in Japanese whisky. A rare cask made from Japanese oak, it’s used in the Yamazaki single malt whiskies and Hibiki whiskies. The cask, however, is susceptible to leakage, breakage and is “very porous,” said the brand ambassador, requiring at least three times

South Africa: AB InBev to sell SABMiller’s stake in Distell to state-owned pension fund
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev will sell its stake in South Africa's Distell Group to state-owned pension fund Public Investment Corp, it said on December 15, as agreed during its takeover of SABMiller.
South Africa’s Competition Commission made the disposal a condition of the $100 billion takeover.
The 26.4 percent stake in Stellenbosch-based Distell, which makes wine, spirits and ciders, is worth roughly 9 billion rand ($645 million) based on its closing price on December 14.
Distell’s other large shareholders, Remgro Ltd and Capevin Holdings Ltd, had pre-emptive rights in relation to the stake, but AB InBev said they confirmed they would not exercise them.
Distell shares were flat in Johannesburg at 0800 GMT.
