Scientific Digest
IS THE PROFILE OF HOP POLYPHENOLS VARIETY SPECIFIC?
ABSTRACT
Yes, it is. At least that is the conclusion of a Japanese
research team. They investigated six different hop
varieties from Germany, Czech Republic and USA from
three different crop years. The polyphenol profiles of all
varieties show that the composition of monophenols,
flavonols, flavanones, prenylflavonoids, flavanols,
proanthocyanidins is different for each crop year but
within limits. The composition of the polyphenols
correlates with the genetic background of the
varieties. Further they found that the content of each
polyphenol in beer was similar to that in hops used.
Fresh beer samples using six hop varieties showed
flavour differences for sweetness and astringency. The
data suggest that the contents of proanthocyanidin is important for the intensity of sensory fullness while
the content of flavanones and prenylflavonoids are in
context with astringency.

USA, TX & WA: Austin’s Jester King brewery becomes an equity partner in forthcoming Fair Isle Brewery in Seattle
|
Two Seattle homebrewers aiming to take their skills to the big leagues have gotten a serious boost from an Austin, Texas-based business, reports the Washington Beer Blog.
Highly-regarded Austin brewery Jester King, which is actually building out a farm to complement its farmhouse-style production facility, is an equity partner in forthcoming Fair Isle Brewery. Though it doesn’t have a home yet, Fair Isle also plans to focus on farmhouse-style beers, a broad category of often-funky, predominantly Belgian styles that have their origins in 19th-century European farmhouses; saisons are the most common of these beers seen on the market today.
Fair Isle's website promises a "large range of mixed culture farmhouse and wild beers, including Saison, Grisette, Biere de Garde, ‘Farmhouse’, and American Sour beer. Many of our beers will include locally foraged items such as fireweed, elderberries, mushrooms etc and many will also be refermented on fruit. We also plan to have a coolship and produce true spontaneously fermented ‘wild’ beers." There certainly won’t be a typical line-up of porters, pales, and stouts.
The news came a week ago via Jester King's blog, which revealed that co-owner Andrew Pogue helped out Jester King's founders in their early days with everything from tasting room-buildout

USA, VA: Sinistral Brewing Company eyeing summer 2017 opening in Manassas
|
Sinistral Brewing Company plans to bring a new brewery to Historic Downtown Manassas. The 3,500 square foot brewery, at 9423 Main Street, adjacent to the Philly Tavern, will consist of a 7-barrel brewhouse, taproom and beer garden, according to a city news release, Inside NoVa reported on December 21.
“The City of Manassas is excited to welcome Sinistral Brewing to our Historic Downtown,” City Manager W. Patrick Pate said in a statement. “The City of Manassas has quickly become the location of choice for craft brewers and distilleries because of our unique, vibrant and business friendly environment.”
Direct from owner and head brewer Blane Perry’s passion for the art and craft of brewing, Sinistral Brewing Company will offer a selection of flagship beers, rotating seasonal specialties and experimental beers using locally sourced ingredients. Flight tastings, pints and crowler fills will all be available.
“Sinistral Brewing Company will be both a destination for craft beer aficionados and a fun, neighborhood hang out for beer lovers in Historic Downtown Manassas. The opportunity to bring my love of craft beer and brewing to the Northern Virginia craft brewing scene is a dream come true for me,” said Blane Perry, of the planned opening.

USA, CA: Waterman Brewing Company to become Elk Grove’s third craft brewery
|
Waterman Brewing Company will become Elk Grove’s third craft brewery, the city announced on December 20.
Waterman’s soon-to-open tasting room will feature craft beer brewed at 9824 Dino Drive, Suite 150, in an industrial area in the south part of Elk Grove. The owners hope to open in the spring.
Two other breweries, Flatland Brewing Company and Tilted Mash Brewing, opened in the city in the past year. Breweries have proliferated throughout the Sacramento region in the past few years, but only recently have opened in Elk Grove.
Waterman was founded by Elk Grove residents Jeff and Janis Stilz. Jeff Stilz said he grew up in a family that brews beer and makes wine. As he got older, he began brewing his own beer, supplying friends and family for years.
As craft beer grew in popularity, people started suggesting he open his own brewery. He and his wife decided to go for it in Elk Grove because the city has “lots of people but not so many breweries,” Stilz said.
The brewery will feature a 10-barrel brewhouse and a 50-seat tasting room with an outside patio. The brewery won’t sell food but will schedule food trucks.
Stilz said he wants to create an atmosphere where people

USA, WI: South Shore Brewery now brewing at new facility in Washburn
|
South Shore Brewery is now brewing beer in Washburn at a new bottling and kegging facility, WDIO-TV reported on December 22.
On December 21, the first batch of Nut Brown was bottled up. Owner Bo Belanger explains that the brewery does things a bit differently than other craft beers; namely, all the base malt used comes from farms in Mason and hops come from central Wisconsin.
"The ingredients themselves - in the fact that it's Lake Superior water - what we're trying to put in our water is that passion we have for brewing, but it also says something about us and the community we are living and working in," Belanger said. "This is going to allow us to compete and get our brand in the retails."
The building also features the Tap House with a tasting room, windows looking into the brewery and a shuffleboard game for some entertainment.

Philippines: San Miguel Corp. preparing to launch P20 bln bond offer
|
Conglomerate San Miguel Corp. is preparing to launch a new bond offer worth as much as P20 billion to boost funds to trim foreign currency-denominated debt, Business Inquirer reported on December 23.
The proposed new bond offering is part of SMC’s application for the shelf registration at the Securities and Exchange Commission of up to P60 billion in retail bonds.
SMC disclosed to the Philippine Stock Exchange on December 23 that it had received from the SEC the official notice on its filing for an initial offering of at least P15 billion with an option to increase the offering by as much as P5 billion.
The bonds are proposed to be listed on the fixed income exchange Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp.
Under the SEC-sanctioned shelf registration program, securities to be issued in tranches may be registered for an offering to be made on a continuous or delayed basis for a period not exceeding three years.
The issuer is allowed to use the same prospectus for various tranches of securities offering under such mechanism.
Such shelf registration is crucial in seeking a good timing to proceed with a planned securities issuance especially when financial markets are volatile. This allows the issuer to complete all the tedious
