WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news USA: AB InBev invests in growing its craft beer brands domestically and abroad
Anheuser-Busch InBev is making a number of sizable investments to grow its acquired craft beer brands both domestically and abroad, according to recent reports.

The world’s largest beer company is planning a large-scale international expansion for its biggest craft offering, Goose Island, and making significant investments to scale production capabilities for its Blue Point and Karbach Brewing brands in their respective home markets of New York and Texas.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Goose Island’s global strategy will begin to materialize in 2017, as it begins operating outposts in six countries, including:

•Sao Paulo, Brazil, •Seoul South Korea, •Shanghai, China •Monterrey, Mexico •Toronto, Canada •London, England

“It’s plain and simple — if we don’t do it, somebody else is going to,” Goose Island President Ken Stout told the Tribune.

In addition to increased product availability and the potential to brew large-scale batches of Goose Island beer at AB InBev breweries abroad, physical expansion takes three forms: Goose Island Brewhouses, Vintage Ale Houses and branded Goose Island pubs.

According to the Tribune, brewhouses in Sao Paolo, Seoul and Shanghai were set to open this month. The company’s Vintage Ale House concept also opened this month in London and a branded pub serving Goose Island beer opened in Mexico. Brewhouse openings in Toronto ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Flying Dog Brewery receives final approval to build new brewery in Frederick
Maryland’s Flying Dog Brewery has received final approval to build a $54 million, 150,000 sq. ft. production brewery on 32 acres in Frederick, MD, Brewbound.com reported.

The Frederick Board of Aldermen signed off on a $2.55 million deal for the land at a December 15 meeting, according to the Frederick News Post.

“The city has been nothing but supportive throughout the process, and we’re excited to purchase land within the city and hopefully build a destination brewery within the confines of Frederick city,” Flying Dog chief marketing officer Ben Savage told the News Post. “We’re excited to get started. It’s kind of like a race to the starting line, but we’re excited for the next few years and what we’re going to create over there.”

The sale is reportedly expected to close before the end of the year or in early January. Once the new facility is online — possibly in 2020 — Flying Dog will be capable of producing as much as 800,000 barrels annually. Flying Dog produced 99,330 barrels in 2015, according to Brewers Association records.

Brewery news USA, IN: Black Circle Brewing Co. now open in Indianapolis
The former Double 8 grocery warehouse building in Indianapolis’ South Broad Ripple has made way for a brewery, craft beer bar and music venue, the Indianapolis Star reported on December 23.

Black Circle Brewing Co. takes up about 2,300 square feet of what is now called Refinery 46, 2201 E. 46th St. The brewery opened to the public on December 22.

Brewery owners Jesse Rice and Dan Gayle had been dreaming up the concept for almost five years. The two met while working together at a bank in Fishers. They have been homebrewing together since 2007 and wanted to turn their passion into a profession.

“It seems like everything is saturated in Indy, but we have so much more room to grow, and we want to be a part of that,” Rice said.

They also believe that the merging of craft beer and music is something that is missing in the area that the two call home. They have seen the concept in other major cities, Rice said. The name “Black Circle” is reference to a record.

“We think the two (craft beer and music) are intrinsically tied to each other,” Rice said. “It’s another cool thing we do to draw people in.”

They plan to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: Biloxi Brewing Co. about to start production in its new facility in Biloxi
Mississippi’s newest craft beer maker is about to start production in its new facility, a converted warehouse on Bohn Street in Biloxi, Mississippi Business Journal reported on December 28.

Biloxi Brewing Co. has been contracting with Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co., the oldest beer maker in the state, to make its products at the facility in Kiln. Production began in April 2015. Biloxi Brewing was founded in September 2014.

Soon, the four owners will start operations in their new Biloxi plant. “We began working in July after we closed on the building and have been working on it ever since,” said Carlon Broome, the chief marketing officer of Biloxi Brewing and a retired photographer who owned a studio in Biloxi.

Biloxi Brewing has been producing 1,200 barrels a year at Lazy Magnolia but, Broome said, “with our new facility the goal is about 2,400 barrels a year.”

Broome and the other three owners are all former backyard brewers with varying professional backgrounds. “We’ve been brewing beer for a number of years. That’s how we got together,” he said. “We enjoyed home brewing so much we didn’t want to give up the hobby.”

Donny Richards, the chief financial officer, is employed at Northrop Grumman after a career ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: King’s Town Beer Company opens its doors in Kingston
Ontario Beverage Network reports that the province’s newest craft brewery has opened in Kingston.

King’s Town Beer Company is located at 3-675 Arlington Park Place in the west end of the city, and features a 5 barrel brewing system with 10 tanks, a 30 foot bar in the tasting room, and a growler shop for beer-to-go.

King’s Town opened on December 23rd for the first time, and is offering three beers at launch: King’s Town Ale (5.6%, 16.7 IBU, “malt forward style reddish ale with mild hop character”), 1840 Stout (5% abv, 30.9 IBU, “full bodied (with) pronounced espresso, chocolate and nutty flavours”), and Islander IPA (4.2% abv, 69.8 IBU, “spicy citrus and earthy hop flavour with a noticeable pine smell”).

Coming to the line-up soon will be GPA (4.8% abv, 45 IBU, “superbly-balanced, refreshingly lively beer”) and Sir John A’s One-Off Series, a series of limited edition beers named in honour of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A Macdonald.

Brewery news USA, CA: Napa Smith Brewing closes up shop in Napa
What had been shaping up as a big year for Napa County’s beer scene ended up on a down note as the valley’s only large-scale brewery closed up shop and moved with little fanfare, Napa Valley Register reported on December 30.

Napa Smith Brewing, a fixture in the industrial area at Highway 29 and Jameson Canyon Road, announced over the summer that it would make a major expansion, with a new brewery in Vallejo and production at an existing brewery in Nashville, Tennessee, home of R.S. Lipman Brothers, a beverage manufacturer and distributor that bought the brewery in the spring.

Left somewhat unclear, however, was the fate of the Napa facility, a brewery and taproom. Earlier this month, however, that facility closed with little public notice. Today, the sign by the highway is gone and the building stands vacant.

“It was born in Napa and we absolutely intend to keep a presence in Napa,” spokeswoman Angela Evans said.

“What happened is we couldn’t scale up to keep up with demand where we were.”

Vallejo offered more space and easier access to water, she said. The Napa facility closed this month and the entire staff of 14 remains on the payroll at the new location. They ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mt. Begbie Brewing Co. happy with its new home in Revelstoke
Tucked away in the back of Revelstoke in Johnson Heights, a sleek industrial building sits surrounded by quiet forest, snow and mountain views. Inside, bright lights reflect off a line of aluminum tanks, standing like soldiers on a polished concrete floor.

This is the new home of Mt. Begbie Brewing Co., Revelstoke’s local award-winning brewery known for popular beers such as the High Country Kölsch and Tall Timber Ale, Revelstoke Mountaineer reported on December 28.

Their brew flows at most venues around town and to deal with growing demand, reaching from Vancouver Island to western Canada, the company needed a bigger space. It’s the second time they’ve moved and it’s been a long time coming. Construction began around May 2015 and should be finished this month.

The company supplied about 6,600 hectolitres of golden goodness to its customers this year and will likely do about 9,000 in 2016. The capacity of their new quarters is 15,000, so there is plenty of room to grow.

Owners Bart and Tracey Larson began the brewery in 1996. Bart has a PhD in nuclear physics and Tracey has degree in biology, but that hasn’t changed the way they brew beer.

“When we started, the failure rate was one in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, PE: Moth Lane Brewing opens for business on the western end of Prince Edward Island
More than a year after it was first announced, Prince Edward Island’s fourth brewery – and the first on the western end of the island – is now open for business, Canadian Beer News reported.

Moth Lane Brewing has been founded by former lobster fisherman Eric Wagner, and is located in the small community of Ellerslie, approximately 30 minutes northwest of Summerside.

Situated at 101 Mickie Allen Shore Road near the North Shore in a building that once housed a shellfish business run by Wagner, the Moth Lane facility features a 7 barrel brewhouse, a 50 seat tasting room, and a deck with a view of the Conway Narrows that will be open in the warmer months.

Moth Lane opened to the public for the first time on December 24th with three brands available by the glass or growler: Motorboat’r Blonde Ale (“refreshing, easy drinking”), The Answer Imperial IPA (“piney, hoppy bitterness”), and Oyster Thief Stout (“creamy, chocolate & coffee notes”).

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mayne Island Brewing launches in British Columbia’s Salt Spring Island
The latest newsletter from What’s Brewing reports that BC’s latest – and probably last – new brewery opening of 2016 took place last week in the province’s Gulf Islands.

Mayne Island Brewing is a nanobrewery located on its namesake island, situated midway between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

The brewery launched with three brands – Blonde Ale (7% abv), Brown Ale (5.3% abv) and Mayne Island Forager (6.4% abv) – that are available at the brewery in 330 ml and 750 ml bottles.

Mayne Island Brewing will be open from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on December 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st. Following the holidays, regular business hours will be 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

Brewery news USA, MA: Trillium Brewing to relocate to a larger space in Boston
Popular craft beermaker Trillium Brewing is planning to relocate its original brewing facility in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston to a larger space just a few blocks away, Brewbound reported.

The new space, according to brewery co-owner Jean-Claude Tetreault, will span more than 15,000 sq. ft. and will include a full-scale restaurant as well as outdoor patio seating. The company is also looking into the feasibility of building a roof deck bar, Tetreault added.

Specific financial details, as well as the exact address of the new brewery, were not disclosed, but the multi-million dollar project will be financed using a combination of bank debt and cash flow, Tetreault said.

“We are still working on the budget, but it will be roughly what we spent to the get our Canton facility open, and perhaps a bit more,” he said.

Trillium’s original outpost is located in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Boston, near the Seaport, but the company currently produces a majority of its beer out of a 16,000 sq. ft. brewing facility in Canton, Mass. It also leases a 36,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Canton for storing raw materials and aging beer.

The company has yet to sign a lease for the new Fort Point property ...More info on site

Loyalist City Brewing has been founded by friends and experienced homebrewers Mark McGraw, Ryan Scott, and David Smith, and has launched with Lupulus Interruptus, a 7.5% abv and 90 IBU American-style IPA.

Lupulus Interruptus is currently on tap at Cask & Kettle, and available for growler fills at the Wellington Row ANBL. Other brands and expanded distribution will follow in January, and the brewery taproom and retail store at 60 Water Street in Uptown Saint John will open in early 2017.

Brewery news South Korea: Beer output increases continuously since 2010
South Korea’s beer output has increased continuously since 2010, while whiskey output has declined, according to data from the National Tax Service out on December 28.

That suggests Koreans are gradually losing their taste for potent spirits and mindless inebriation and coming round to a milder buzz.

Last year beer output rose 9.2 percent compared to 2011 to 2.21 million kilolitres, but whiskey production dropped 26 percent to 17,000 kilolitres.

Output of soju, makgeolli or rice wine and whiskey all dropped.

One brewery executive said, "Beer imports are up, while competition has increased with Lotte Group entering the beer market in 2014, resulting in a wider range of product choices. The market is growing."

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has agreed to provide €18.5 mln of loan to Global Beer Georgia (GBG) to construct and operate a greenfield brewery in Georgia, Drinks Business Review reported on December 29.

It will be a syndicated loan package which will include an A loan of €6.2 mln from EBRD’s own account, a B loan of €6.2 mln from Dutch development bank FMO and German development bank DEG will act as a parallel lender offering another €6.2 mln.

GBG is owned by JSC Teliani Valley, a major wine producer in Georgia. The company is also listed on the Georgian Stock Exchange.

The company's new brewery produce both locally developed and international beer brands such as Heineken, Krusovice and Amstel to meet the growing demand for beer in Georgia.

Teliani Valley, which currently imports Heineken and Krusovice to Georgia, plans to produce these brands in the coming years.

It also plans to develop a new, local brand of beer and produce Amstel in coming years.

Malt news Australia: Coopers’ Brewery signs contract for refrigeration plant at its Regency Park malting plant
Beers will be on ice next year at a new A$63 million malting plant in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, The Advertiser reported on December 25.
