WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?
ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped
beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this?
Comprehensive testing by a research team has found
that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids
slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation.
Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were
observed but both are rather foam positive so they
are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative,
but due to low concentration in beer, they are also
not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of
importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very
sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids -
they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no
surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam

USA: Constellation Brands says beer sales continued to drive revenue and profit growth in latest quarter
|
Constellation Brands Inc. on January 5 said beer sales continued to drive revenue and profit growth for the latest quarter, even as investors continue to be concerned about the impact of the incoming Donald Trump administration on the company that produces much of its beer in Mexico.
Still, beer sales growth declined from faster rates seen in previous quarters.
Constellation's third-quarter profit came in above Wall Street forecasts, while revenue met expectations.
Constellation grew in the years following its $5.3 billion acquisition of the U.S. distribution rights for Corona, several other Mexican beers and a Mexican brewery. The election of Mr. Trump and his focus on promoting American-produced goods has spooked some investors. Shares are down 15% from their October record to their December low, even as broader stock markets have grown sharply.
Recently, the company has been shifting around its portfolio by buying and selling some smaller brands and operations. During the quarter, Constellation acquired craft whiskey maker High West Distillery in a $137 million deal that expands the alcohol company's business into the fast-growing bourbon and rye categories. The company also completed the purchase of an Obregon, Mexico brewery from Grupo Modelo, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, for $583 million.

USA: Corona, Modelo beer prices won’t increase even if government places additional taxes on imports - Constellation
|
American lovers of Mexican beers likely wouldn't have to pay more for their Corona or Modelo if Republican-led tax reform places additional taxes on imports, executives of parent company Constellation Brands said on January 5.
But investors remained skittish on what impact tougher trade policies espoused by President-elect Donald Trump and House Republicans could have on Constellation's bottom line. The company's stock was down about 7 percent to $146.82 per share in January 5 trading, despite assurances by Constellation executives that the company could offset additional taxes known as "border adjustments" with supply chain changes — and not price hikes that would affect consumer demand.
"We don't expect consumer demand to be affected by border adjustments in any timeline relevant to our shareholders. ... I think (Republican tax reform) could be a net positive when it's all said and done," CEO Rob Sands said on the January 5 earnings call.
Sands noted the company had recently repurchased shares of its stock, which it felt were being undervalued because of the "changing political and legislative landscape."
Beer has driven the recent growth of Constellation, which also sells wine and spirits brands, like Robert Mondavi, Clos Du Bois and Svedka vodka.

Vietnam: Habeco counting on upcoming Lunar New Year to increase sales

Vietnam’s state-owned beer company, Habeco, plans to sell 146.8 million litres of beer during the upcoming Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet.
A report by local official news outlet, Bao Giao Thong, has said the targeted sales would be a year-on-year increase of 6.1%.
In the country’s capital, Ho Chi Minh, alone, beer consumption during Tet, which falls on 28 January, is forecast to jump 30% to roughly 40 million litres compared with last year, VnExpress.net wrote, citing figures released by the municipal Department of Industry and Trade.
The beer-swilling country guzzled down roughly 4.04 billion litres of beer in 2016 based on estimates by Euromonitor International, the highest in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beer consumption in the country has jumped more than 40% in 2015 compared with 2010.
Last year the Vietnamese government announced its plans to divest large amounts of it shares in Habeco and another of its state-owned beer company Sabeco to raise funds for the country’s key infrastructure projects. It will sell 82% of its stake in Habeco for US$404 million, wrote Bloomberg.

South Korea: Discount chains and convenience stores to raise beer prices in response to government decision to raise empty bottles subsidy

South Korea's discount chains and convenience stores said on January 5 they will raise prices of beer and soju, a popular Korean distilled beverage, beginning next week, the Korea Times reported.
CU, a major South Korean convenience store chain, is set to raise prices of two brands of 360 milliliter soju bottles - Hite Jinro's Chamisul and Lotte Chilsung Beverage's Chum-Churum - to 1,700 won ($1.4) from 1,600 won.
The convenience store also plans to raise prices of Oriental Brewery's Cass and its rival Hite Jinro's Hite to 1,900 won each from 1,850 won and 1,800 won, respectively.
GS25 and Seven Eleven, two other major convenience store chains, also plan to follow suit.
E-Mart, the No. 1 discount store chain in South Korea, is also set to sell a 500 ml beer bottle for 1,410 won, up from 1,330 won. It will also raise soju prices to 1,220 won from 1,140 won.
Lotte Mart, a discount store chain operated by South Korea's retail giant Lotte Group, said it will raise prices of a 640 ml beer bottle to 1,830 won from 1,750 won.
The planned price hike came in response to a recent government decision to raise a subsidy for empty bottles of beer and soju.

USA: Constellation Brands makes minority investments in two US craft distilleries

Constellation Brands has been on a craft spirits bender.
The producer of Corona beer and Svedka vodka on January 5 announced that it made minority investments in Virginia-based Catoctin Creek Distilling Company and Kentucky's Bardstown Bourbon Company, which only began commercial production back in September. The deals add to a slew of recent merger and acquisition activity from Constellation Brands (STZ.B), which has recently fully acquired High West Distillery for $160 million, paid $120 million for the high-end portfolio of Charles Smith Wines, and unloaded the company's Canadian wine business for $780 million.$780 million.
All of those deals come as Constellation Brands aims to place a bigger bet on "premium" brands — alcoholic beverages that command higher price points as they tout their higher quality and premium-focused marketing tactics. The beers that Constellation sells, including Ballast Point and Modelo Especial, are higher priced than mainstream American lagers like Bud Light or Miller Lite. The bets the company has been making in the spirits world are similarly positioned.

USA: Suntory denies plans to list its US spirits unit on the New York Stock Exchange

Suntory Holdings is not planning to list its U.S. spirits unit Beam Suntory Inc on the New York Stock Exchange, a top executive said on January 5, denying a Japanese media report, Reuters reported.
"We are not considering any listing in the U.S.," Takeshi Niinami, the president of Suntory Holdings told reporters in Tokyo at a gathering of corporate executives to mark the start of the New Year.
Beam Suntory, the world's third-largest spirits company known for its Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbons, was formed in 2014 when Suntory bought its U.S. rival Beam for $14 billion.
The Mainichi daily reported earlier that the Japanese food and beverages conglomerate was in talks with overseas investment banks about a listing of Beam, seeking funds to expand its footprint in emerging markets.
