WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?
ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped
beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this?
Comprehensive testing by a research team has found
that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids
slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation.
Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were
observed but both are rather foam positive so they
are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative,
but due to low concentration in beer, they are also
not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of
importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very
sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids -
they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no
surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam

Russia: Beer share of total volume of alcohol sold declines in January - November
|
Beer’s share of total volume of alcohol sold in Russia in January – November 2016 declined by 0.5% to 40.7%, Rosstat reported earlier in January.
Vodka’s share increased over the reporting period by 0.6% to 38.6% while the share of wine remained flat at 6%, it is reported.

Japan: Suntory aims at increasing total beer sales by 1% this year
|
Japan’s Suntory Beer Limited made public its business strategy for 2017 on January 10.
The company said in 2016, the total market for the beer category in Japan (including happoshu, new-genre beer, and non-alcoholic beer-type beverages) was estimated to shrink about 2% from the previous year. Under these circumstances, Suntory Beer Limited had total sales of 71.65 million cases (one case is equivalent to twenty large (633 mL) bottles), which is down 3% year-on-year, as the sales volume was in line with the market size. Sales of the beer category, excluding non-alcoholic beer-type beverages, totaled 64.61 million cases (down 3% year-on-year).
This year, the total market for the beer category in Japan and the beer market in Japan excluding the non-alcoholic beverages is forecast to shrink by about 2% from the previous year. Suntory Beer Limited said it will further bolster marketing activities related to the three core brands of The Premium Malt's, Kin-Mugi, and All-Free to stimulate new demand and provide added impetus to the beer market. Suntory Beer Limited's goal is to sell 72.7 million cases (up 1% year-on-year) with the aim of selling 65.5 million cases (up 1% year-on-year) in the beer category.

Vietnam: Vietnam’s beer market a promising destination for global beer companies

With high growth potential, Vietnam has become a promising destination for leading global beer companies, according to Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper.
Belgium’s Anheuser Busch InBev opened a beer factory in the southern province of Binh Duong, while the Netherlands’ Heineken plans to expand its factory in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau and increase productivity from 50 million litres at present to 60 million litres by 2025.
The Japanese Sapporo beer company has introduced new products to the public.
According to Kirin International Food JSC, Vietnam produced nearly 4.7 billion litres of beer in 2015, becoming the world’s third largest beer producer. With this output, Vietnam recorded the highest growth rate of over 20 percent compared to 2014, much higher than the figure of 8.8 percent recorded by Belgium – the runner-up.
Asian and global beer output in 2015 saw year-on-year declines of 1.3 percent and 1.1 percent respectively.
Along with India, Vietnam is one of two nations recording consecutive growth in beer output over the past 15 years.

Belgium: AB InBev to hike lager prices as per February 1
|
World’s No. 1 brewer AB InBev has announced an increase in its lager prices in Belgium as from February the 1st, Het Nieuwsblad reported on January 6.
According to the newspaper, the HoReCa price for AB InBev’s lagers will increase by EUR0.014/bottle. In the retail sector, the price of a beer cask will rise by 37 eurocents, which equals to an increase of EUR0.015 per bottle.
The global beer giant said the increase was necessary to finance long-term investments on the Belgian market.

Finland: Proposed alcohol reform could bring down strong beer prices and have great impact on consumer purchasing habits
|
If passed by Parliament, the Finnish government's proposed alcohol reform could have a great impact on consumer purchasing habits, YLE News reported on January 11.
According to a new report, the reform would lead to significantly lower prices for strong beer, a decrease in the amount of alcohol brought to Finland from Estonia by Finnish travellers, and an increase in alcohol consumption.
Supermarket shoppers could in future get stronger booze without visiting the state alcohol monopoly retailer, Alko.
Stores in Finland would be able to sell drinks containing up to 5.2 percent alcohol such as strong beer. The current limit for retail grocery sales is 4.7 percent alcohol.
That difference may sound insignificant, but a new Taloustutkimus Research survey commissioned by the Finnish Grocery Trade Association says the consequences could be great. It claims that retail prices for strong beers and ciders will drop by 40 percent. The survey also says that this will lead to an increase in alcohol sales, but owing to taxation differences beer containing 3.5 to 4.7 percent will become a more affordable option.
The reform will also make it less financially enticing for travellers to buy alcohol in neighbouring Estonia and cart it back to Finland.

Canada: Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre releases list of recommended malting barley varieties
|
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre has released its annual list of recommended malt barley varieties.
The list represents varieties that the centre recommends based on the greatest potential for performance, quality, and marketability.
This year’s list includes:
2-row varieties – CDC Copeland, AC Metcalfe, Bentley, CDC Meredith, CDC PolarStar, Newdale, Merit 57, CDC Kindersley, AAC Synergy;
6-row varieties – Legacy, Tradition, Celebration.
The recommendations are published annually with input from grain companies, domestic and international maltsters and brewers, grower associations as well as seed companies.
“We examine selection rates and consult with industry to gauge the level of demand for specific varieties,” said Peter Watts, the centre’s managing director.
“The list represents malting barley varieties that we believe have the greatest potential to be selected for malt. We also recommend growers talk to their local elevators, or selectors from grain and malting companies, about the best two-row and six-row malting barley varieties to grow in their area.”

India: Supreme Court asks Mallya to explain transfer of Diageo payout to his children
|
The Supreme Court on January 11 asked businessman Vijay Mallya to explain why he transferred the $40 million payout he received from London-based liquor maker Diageo Plc. to his children, Livemint reported.
A bench comprising justices Kurian Joseph and A.M. Khanwilkar was hearing a plea filed by a consortium of banks that sought to recover the $40 million from Mallya.
On 25 November, in an affidavit submitted before the apex court, Mallya admitted that the money had been transferred to his three children—Siddharth, Leena and Tanya Mallya—who were US citizens and sole beneficiaries of the three respective trusts over which he had no control in his individual capacity.
Mallya had received the payment of $40 million out of a $75 million package from Diageo following his resignation as chairman of United Spirits Ltd in February 2016.
In April, the apex court directed Mallya to disclose all the assets held by him and his family, after the consortium of creditors spurned his offer to repay Rs4,000 crore to settle the debt of Kingfisher Airlines.
