WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news USA, GA: Creature Comforts expanding into second brewery in Athens
Creature Comforts, one of the fastest-growing and most hyped craft beer breweries in the Southeast, is expanding into a second location in Athens, Ga., to accommodate their significant growth. After opening in April of 2014, they have since increased their production to 28,000 barrels a year, the Paste Magazine reported on January 18.

The second location is a 36,000-square-foot historic building in downtown Athens that will allow for a fully automated dual 85-barrel four-vessel brewhouses, a 24-head rotary filler for canning, and 50,000 barrels’ worth of annual fermentation capacity (in addition to their 28,000 barrel output) to start out, as well as extra space to add additional fermentation in the future as needed.

In a press release, Creature Comforts CEO and Co-Founder Chris Herron commented on the expansion:

Community is one of the six pillars that we founded the brewery on, and Athens is our community. We started this process of finding a new home with the intent of staying in Athens. With the help of the city and a bit of luck and vision, we are going to be able to make that dream a reality. The chance to bring back to life such a historic building in a part of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Midland Brewing Co. plans to reopen on February 9
Patrons have waited more than a year for the day: Midland Brewing Co. plans to reopen Thursday, Feb. 9, Midland Daily News reported on January 18.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Midland Brewing is located at 5011 N. Saginaw Road.

Co-owner Dave Kepler says the more than $1 million in upgrades will have made the wait worthwhile.

“We have 14 taps and we’re trying to fill them all,” he said.

That includes flagship beers Copper Harbor Ale, Brothers IPA, Dublin Street Stout, Isle Royale Cream Ale and Midland Pale Ale.

There are a couple newcomers, too: the “‘Silver Jack’ Griscoll” is a Russian Imperial stout that Kepler says is “robust.” It’s named in honor of the famed 19th-century Michigan lumberjack John Griscoll.

“We’re going to be introducing a new American wheat beer as well,” Kepler said. Keeping with the historical nod to burly men, its name seems apt: “Lumberjack Brawl.”

Another new brew is the “7 Vultures” black IPA, which Kepler said features seven different types of hops.

Brewery news USA, OR: Great Notion Brewing signs lease for a new production facility
It's been just over a year since Great Notion Brewing officially brewed its first batch of beer and started serving pints from its taproom on Northeast Alberta Street, and already, the upstart brewery is on the rise, the Portland Business Journal reported on January 18.

Originally founded in 2015 by three Portland neighbors — James Dugan, Andy Miller and Paul Reiter — Great Notion has signed a lease for a 20,000-square-foot production facility and restaurant in an industrial area of Northwest Portland. The building, at 2448 N.W. 28th Ave., will include about 17,500 square feet of production space and 2,500 square feet for the restaurant and taproom. Great Notion, which has become known for its New England style IPA and its unique sours and stouts, will maintain its current location on Northeast Alberta.

The expansion will also find Great Notion jumping from a seven-barrel brewing system to a 30-barrel system, which Reiter said will put the brewery on track to produce about 2,000 barrels this year and up to 4,000 barrels next year. In addition, the brewery will also invest in a canning line, which will allow it to more efficiently sell directly to customers. At present, Great Notion sells pints in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Uptown Brewing Company to launch in Greenville the last weekend of the month
Greenville's newest brewery has announced it will open the last weekend of the month, WITN reported on January 18.

Uptown Brewing Company on Evans Street will open on Saturday, January 28th at noon.

Staff will be serving eight beers that have been brewed on site - two IPA's, a Belgian double IPA, a wheat beer, a coffee porter and a kolsch light craft beer.

Managing partner Donald Dunn says they aim to have something for everyone.

Dunn says, "When we saw the building we could picture the brewery here and it turned out even better than what we were thinking."

The owners were able to purchase the location through a building reuse grant, which was awarded to the brewery by the Department of Commerce, and is intended for properties that have been vacant for over 30 days.

Opening day hours will be from noon to 11:00 p.m. with a grand opening will be held some time in the future.

Brewery news USA, MO: Good News Brewing Co. aiming at summer opening in O’Fallon
There's certainly good news for craft-beer fans in O'Fallon, Missouri: Good News Brewing Co. plans to open this summer, the Feast Magazine reported on January 18.

As first reported by 70 West Sentinel, Good News is the first commercial brewery from former homebrewers Dan Tripp, Josh Miller and Matt Fair. The trio began brewing together a few years ago on a 5-gallon pot before building their own 1-barrel brewing system. Over the years, they worked closely with nearby Design2Brew in O'Fallon, where they purchased equipment and supplies and also brewed a collaboration beer.

"Eventually, we decided to create a space where we could go bigger, brew a lot of beer together and invite in our friends and family," Tripp tells Feast. "At the core, we wanted to have a place people could hang out and spend time together."

Now, the trio plan to open the doors to Good News Brewing Co. at 330 Sonderen St. in the space formerly home to Patke's Farm Dairy. Tripp says it was important for the brewery to be located in the O'Fallon area; he cites the newly opened Friendship Brewing Co. in Wentzville and Third Wheel Brewing, slated to open in St. Peters this spring, as driving ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Rouleur Brewing Company scheduled to open this March
Another local home brewer is preparing to make the leap to professional brewmaster via H.G. Fenton’s Brewery Igniter project, launching soon in Carlsbad and joining other H.G. Fenton brewery incubators in Miramar and North Park, Eater San Diego reported on January 18.

Owner Rawley Macias, who has been homebrewing for more than a decade and is a certified craft beer judge, will tap Rouleur Brewing Company this March. The 2,000-square-foot space includes a ten tap tasting room and brewing system that can produce up to 1,800 barrels per year. It will share the Brewery Igniter building with another brand new craft brewery, Wiseguy Brewing Company.

An avid cyclist, Macias named the brewery after a type of road bicycle racer known for being able to ride well over many kinds of terrain. Calling himself a “rule bender”, Macias says that his beers won’t fit traditional style guidelines, and that he plans on developing new flavor profiles. All the beer names will also be cycling-inspired, including his six core beers: The Domestique (blonde ale), The Sprinteur (red ale), The Puncheur (pale ale), The Grimpeur (dark ale), The Clydesdale (IPA) and The Soloist (golden strong ale), which will always be poured at the tasting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Concord Craft Brewing Co. to open its doors already on January 20
Concord’s first downtown microbrewery launches this weekend.

Concord Craft Brewing Co. will offer its first public tastings of three beers brewed at the 117 Storrs St. site from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, the Concord Monitor reported.

“We also hope to have some product out in local restaurants and bars by the end of this week as well,” owner Dennis Molnar said.

Molnar termed the event a “soft opening,” because he doesn’t yet have the full slate of six to eight beers that he plans to offer. When those are ready, probably the first week of February, he’ll schedule a “grand opening,” he said.

For now, the craft brewery will offer a porter, a Kölsch and an India pale ale. After the weekend, it’ll begin its regular hours from 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesday to Saturday.

Because of the state’s licensing restrictions, the brewery can serve at most 4 ounces of each beer.

Brewery news USA, MA: Seventh Wave Brewing sets tentative opening date in March
Medfield residents may be able to sample locally brewed beer this spring, the Wicked Local Medfield reported on January 19.

Business partners David Strymish and Owen Hawkins are planning to open Seventh Wave Brewing in the complex containing Sluggers Academy off Rte. 27. They've set a tentative opening date of March, with brewing beginning in February.

"It's sort of a New England sailor term, or old-time sailor term about waiting for the seventh wave," Hawkins said, of the brewery's name. "Specifically for us, it's about being patient and waiting for the right time for things and being patient in the craft of making beer."

The two hope to produce eight to 10 different beers, and switch some of those out seasonally, or as they come up with new ideas. Seventh Wave will also offer small batch coffee and creative breads Strymish bakes.

"I love making things, baking, coffee-making. I just like making stuff," said Strymish, who owned the now-defunct online cookbook business Jessica's Biscuit, and said he was once in Julia Child's kitchen. "I just love getting involved in the processes and the flavors."

Both said they decided to open a brewery because brewing makes them happy.

"I'm not a cook like Dave," Hawkins said, "but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Ei8ht Ball Brewing announces closing date
Ei8ht Ball Brewing in Newport is closing. It will serve its last pints in mid- to late February, Cincinnati.com reported on January 9.

The brewery, a division of New Riff Distilling, LLC, opened in late 2013 inside the Party Source. Its closure will allow New Riff to focus exclusively on whiskey and spirits, according to representatives from the company.

“Ei8ht Ball was incredibly successful as a small niche brewery, and we were selling all the beer we could make at our current facility,” New Riff Distilling president and owner Ken Lewis said in a new release, which noted that the brewery has 28 beers on tap and has doubled production each year it has been in business. "But the craft beer industry is tightening, and we made the decision to focus on distilling as we prepare for our first batch of bourbon in 2018. We have a unique position in the Kentucky bourbon market, but we’re less unique in the craft beer world. We’re going to narrow our focus and let others do craft beer.”

The brewery's tap room will keep its regular hours until it closes. Updates about the closing date will be shared on the brewery's Facebook page.

But even after Ei8ht ...More info on site

Barley news EU: Malting barley markets see more activity this week
This week the European markets have seen a bit more activity in malting barley, GrainCom reported on January 20.

Crop 2016 in France still looks very tight, the UK will have a strong export program again. So the market will have to rely on Scandinavia, but selling interest seems not to be so strong at the moment and we might have to put a slight question mark on the quality that will be available, GrainCom said.

Brewery news Vietnam: Habeco shares rise 15% in first day of trading on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange
Shares in Habeco rose 15 percent in their first day of trading on January 19 after switching to the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, valuing the Vietnamese brewer at $1.5 billion, Nasdaq reported.

Habeco shares were at 147,000 dong ($6.51) at 0217 GMT from a starting price of 127,600 dong. The stock was debuting after delisting from Vietnam's Unlisted Public Company Market on Jan. 11 following more than two months of trading.

The government said it wanted to sell all of its 82 percent stake in Habeco in 2016 and its 90 percent in bigger peer Sabeco by 2017, worth a combined $6.4 billion. It has yet to decide details of any sale.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Sale of Plzeňský Prazdroj to Asahi Group questioned by Pilsen-based association Právovarečné měšťanstvo
The Pilsen-based association Právovarečné měšťanstvo is questioning the sale of the Czech brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj to the Japanese company Asahi Group Holdings, the news site iDnes.cz has reported.

The group has appealed to European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestagler, asking her to suspend the sale, arguing that it has been leading a legal dispute over the ownership of part of its property. Karel Svoboda, the head of the Právovarečné měšťanstvo association, told the news site that they were very concerned about the issue.

Právovarečné měšťanstvo is demanding its property rights for the Měšťanský pivovar brewery in Pilsen, which was built by the association back in 1842 and which is today part of the Plzeňský Prazdroj company, are recognised.

Asahi Group Holdings, Japan’s biggest brewery group, has won the bidding competition to acquire the biggest Czech beer producer in December 2016.

The Group has provisionally picked up the Czech brewer as part of a package of Central European beer makers put up for sale by the multinational SABMiller. This also comprised breweries in Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia with the price tag for the job lot put at 7.3 billion euros (around 197 billion Czech crowns).

The sell-off was forced on SABMiller by the European Commission ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Bihar shutting down all liquor factories and bottling plants
Nine months after the Liquor Ban was enforced in Bihar, the State Government is moving ahead to a next level by shutting down all liquor factories and bottling plants in the state, Bihar Prabha reported on January 18.

A decision was taken in the Cabinet Meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at International Convention Center in Rajgir on January 17. As per the details available, the licenses of existing Liquor bottling factories won’t be renewed after March 2017, which would automatically lead to their shutdown.

Ever since the complete Booze Ban in Bihar, analysts had predicted the closure of Liquor Bottling and Brewing Plants across the state. Most of them had setup units in the state in order to reduce the material and transportation cost. The Liquor Ban from April 2016 completely destroyed the local market for these companies.

Bihar had some of the world famous beer companies operating in the states. It has units of 6 different Foreign Liquor brands. These include Carlsberg, Diageo Plc, United Breweries and Molson Coors. These companies own more than 70 distilleries and breweries in Bihar for over a decade now, which is an ideal market for these liquor companies, offering an abundance of raw ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Kingfisher Beer Europe to distribute Indonesian lager Bintang in the UK
Kingfisher Beer Europe is set to launch popular Indonesian lager Bintang in the UK on-trade, the Morning Advertiser reported on January 18.

The company acquired UK marketing and distribution rights from owner Multi Bintang Indonesia, which is part of the Heineken company, with an eye to expanding the brand beyond restaurants and into pubs and bars.

Kingfisher CEO Damon Swarbrick said: “The brand is ideally positioned to capitalise on the burgeoning pan-Asian restaurant sector so we will initially be seeding it here.

He added: “However, we believe it has much wider potential and we have already secured a number of high-profile bar listings in London and Manchester.”

The beer, which has an ABV of 4.7%, will be available in 24x330ml and 12x620ml bottles this month.

Swarbrick added: “While the industry continues to explore craft beer, there is clearly significant demand for premium, authentic, easy-drinking world beers. We believe Bintang is perfectly suited to meet this demand.”

Heineken recently launched H41, a new lager made with ‘wild’ Patagonian yeast, to the UK on-trade.

The beer, a 5.3% ABV lager, was launched exclusively into Laine Pub Company sites in London and Brighton in December with an eye to expanding its presence further in the future.
