WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?
ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped
beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this?
Comprehensive testing by a research team has found
that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids
slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation.
Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were
observed but both are rather foam positive so they
are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative,
but due to low concentration in beer, they are also
not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of
importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very
sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids -
they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no
surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam

USA: Diageo to open Guinness brewery in Maryland after a 63-year absence
|
After a 63-year absence, Guinness Brewery will once again have a working brewery in the United States, CNBC reported on January 31.
The Diageo-owned brand will be creating a version of its Dublin-based Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Relay, Maryland.
While the iconic Guinness Draught, Guinness Foreign Extra and Guinness Extra stouts will still be brewed in Dublin and exported to the U.S., the new brewery will focus on new Guinness beers created for the U.S. market.
The plans call for a "mid-sized" brewery with a packaging and warehouse operation as well as a visitor experience to allow tours and an "innovation microbrewery" and taproom for sampling experimental beers brewed on site.
"Opening a Guinness brewery and visitor center in the U.S. will enable us to collaborate with fellow brewers and interact with the vibrant community of beer drinkers," said Tom Day, president, Diageo Beer Company, USA, in a statement. "Given the success of our Open Gate Brewery in Dublin and the popularity of beer tourism in the U.S., we are confident that Americans will welcome the opportunity to come experience Guinness brewing in Baltimore County."

Kenya: East African Breweries expects recovery in Kenya’s beer market
|
East African Breweries Ltd (EABL), controlled by Britain's Diageo, blamed a jump in Kenyan tax on beer for its flat sales in the six months to Dec. 31 but expects a recovery in the next half-year period, Reuters reported on January 27.
Chief Executive Andrew Cowan told Reuters on January 27 that Kenya should adopt regular, predictable excise tax increases rather than big moves every few years, pointing to a drop in sales of leading brands such as Tusker after Kenya increased excise duty on beer by 43 percent at the end of 2015.
"The boom and bust approach - a 43 percent tax increase - has put the heartbeat of our business, that Tusker brand, under pressure," Cowan said after a news conference on the previous day's half-year results.
But he said that consumption is expected to pick up in the next six months as consumers adjust to the new prices in an economy that is growing at about 6 percent a year.

UK: Craft beer revolution put at risk by Brexit, some brewers warn
|
Brexiters toasting an impending exit from the EU with a pint of ale could be in for a sobering shock, after some of Britain’s top brewers warned that the weak pound is putting the craft beer revolution at risk, The Guardian reported on January 30.
The country’s brewery industry has been enjoying a renaissance, with about 200 new breweries a year adding to the choice for drinkers. But small-scale brewing is already feeling the pinch from the slump in sterling, which has sent the cost of imported ingredients and equipment soaring.
Now drinkers, already asked to pay more than £5 a pint for some independent brews, are being warned that they may have to accept price rises or switch to cheaper mass-market brands.
Unlike multinational beer companies behind such brands, which are not immune to the weak pound but spend relatively little on ingredients, craft brewers scour the globe for the best hops and malt, often preferring overseas varieties.

France: Heineken to invest EUR9.3 mln in expanding its Schiltigheim brewery
|
Dutch brewing giant Heineken said on February 1 it will invest EUR9.3 mln this year in expanding the production capacity at its Schiltigheim brewery in Alsace, France Bleu reported.
The company plans to install a new bottling line and make it operational by early 2018.
The investment will increase the brewery’s production capacity by 450 thousand hl per annum. The facility currently produces 1.3 mln hl of beer per year.

Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone Brewery invests in new fermentation tanks to increase production
|
Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL) is investing in new brewing fermentation tanks as part of its expansion plan to increase production. When installed, production would more than double to meet public demand. The investment comes in at a time when the Finance Act 2016 that protects the SLBL is in force, Awoko reported on January 30.
The consignment of tanks will berth at the Freetown habour in few weeks. Brewery authorities claim that the tanks are made of stainless steel fabricated according to international brewing standards. Civil works is already in progress done by a Sierra Leone registered construction company.
Commenting on the developments, SLBL’s new Managing Director, Daaf Van Tilburg is quoted in a release to have said: “Over the last couple of years we have consulted extensively with our customers to identify their needs and have ensured that our strategy reflects the required plans to satisfy those needs.”
He added “that this foundation has been set by the actions put in place by my predecessor Willy Ngana who has recently been transferred to the Africa Middle East Regional Office in Holland.”

USA & Mexico: Trump’s Mexico tax talk hits Corona stocks

The 20% import tax Donald Trump has proposed on goods shipped from Mexico to the U.S. has already taken its toll on the stocks of burrito chains and Mexican beer brewers, including the maker of Corona, Fortune reported on January 28.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle flew into a panic over the proposal, designed to pay for a wall at the Mexican border. The angst has continued even though the White House has subsequently walked back its commitment to that specific approach. Critics noted that Americans would be the ones paying the tax in the form of higher prices on Mexican cerveza brands and guacamole, with some dubbing the import tariff an "avocado tax." "Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea," Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wrote on Twitter Thursday. "Mucho Sad."

India: Heineken expands distribution to Telangana
|
Heineken, brewed, bottled and marketed in India by United Breweries Limited, was launched in Telangana. The global beer brand, available across 192 countries, targets the discerning beer drinker in India. With its presence already across all major markets in the country, the Telangana launch marks the addition of a strategically important beer market for the brand, The Hans India reported on January 30.
“Telangana is an important beer market, contributing to a significantly large percentage of beer sales in the country. We are aware that discerning beer drinkers have been looking forward to the introduction of this beer in the State,” said Samar Singh Sheikhawat, Senior VP, UB.

Canada: Barley crop forecast to decline in 2017/18
|
Canadian farmers will grow less barley in 2017/18, according to the first new crop production estimates from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Total barley seedings are forecast at 2.500 million hectares, which would be down only slightly from the 2.586 million seeded in 2016. However, a return to average yields would see production come in nearly 800,000 tonnes lower on the year, at 8.000 million.
Exports are forecast to increase by 11% to 2.1 mln tonnes due to strong world supplies and a return to normal trade patterns.
For 2016-17, total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 5% due to higher feed use in cattle and hog production. Exports are forecast to decrease by 6% due to lower world demand for feed barley but malt barley trade is largely unchanged. Barley carry-out stocks are forecast to increase to 2.0 mln tonnes, well above the previous 10-year average.

World: Diageo to re-enter the Irish whiskey market
|
Global drinks producer Diageo has announced its re-entry into the Irish whiskey market, just two years after selling its Bushmills plant to Jose Cuervo in exchange for the for Don Julio tequila brand, FFT.ie reported on January 31.
The new whiskey, Roe & Co, will be distilled at a new facility in St. James’ Gate. Production will begin in 2019, subject to planning approval, meaning the first bottlings from the plant will be expected for sale some time in 2022. The total project investment comes to €25 mln over three years.
Row & Co will be a premium priced product and is expected to retail for around €35 a bottle. Bottles will begin to appear at retail aross Europe from early March 2017, however this will be a blend of whiskeys sourced from undisclosed locations.
Diageo has described the new whiskey as having the ‘signature smoothness of Irish whiskey with remarkable depth of flavour’, and is aged in bourbon casks.
