Scientific Digest

WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news USA: “Too early to know” how President Trump’s policies will affect business – Constellation Brands
Constellation Brands says it is “too early to know” how US President Donald Trump’s policies – and in particular a 20% tax on imports from Mexico - will affect its business, BeverageDaily.com reported on February 2.

Constellation Brands imports a number of beer brands from Mexico (such as Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico), and last year credited 70% of its earnings to sales of its imported Mexican-made products. Since Trump was elected to office, Constellations Brands stock price has fallen to $148.34 per share since its October high of $171.24 in October 2016.

Constellation Brands corporate communications manager, Alicia Nestle, told BeverageDaily: “Until there are more specifics, it is too early to know how any new White House and/or congressional policies will affect our business. Over the years, we’ve worked very effectively with representatives from all levels of the US government and from both political parties, and we fully expect that to continue.”

Trump said that the 20% proposed tax on Mexican imports would be a way to pay for building a border wall between the US and Mexico, but he is still considering other options to finance the construction.

The discussion of raising the import tax follows President Enrique Peña Nieto ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors to add more than 40 employees as part of $50 million expansion of its Milwaukee brewery
MillerCoors plans to add more than 40 employees at its Leinenkugel brewery near downtown Milwaukee as part of a $50 million project to expand the facility on North 10th Street, BizTimes.com reported on February 1.

The brewery currently has 15 employees, but will staff up to 56 following the construction of an 119,328-square-foot packaging and warehouse building, a 9,077-square-foot tank cellar addition and a 2,280-square-foot brew house addition.

“Building out the 10th Street Brewery will allow us more efficient, modern and highly flexible processes at the location. While brewing capacity will increase, no operations are transferring over from Miller Valley,” said Marty Maloney, a MillerCoors spokesman.

MillerCoors sought permits in December to demolish an existing warehouse on the site. The company acquired that building in 2013 from Securant Bank & Trust. The building was a former Sara Lee bakery.

BizTimes reported in December that the company was planning to construct a new warehouse on the site, but a spokesman declined to provide additional details.

MillerCoors will be adding the brew house and tank cellar on the southern and northern ends of the existing brewery, located between North 10th Street and Interstate 43.

The new warehouse will take up essentially all of the space between 10th, West ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Tarboro Brewing Co. to open additional brewing space in Tarboro next month
The Rocky Mount Mills in Tarboro will soon have a new restaurant and craft brewery moving into the former Sweet Taters’ location, Rocky Mount Telegram reported on February 1.

Tarboro Brewing Co. owned by Steven and Inez Ribustello will open an additional space at the Rocky Mount Mills next month. Inez Ribuestello said the new restaurant and brewery called Tarboro Brewing Co. West will begin operations on March 1 inside the 2,100-square-foot millhouse at 1121 Falls Road.

Inez Ribustello said Tarboro Brewing Co. will continue to operate its brewery in Tarboro, which opened in February 2016 at 526 N. Main St. in downtown Tarboro. The staff is already in place for Tarboro Brewing Co. West, she added.

“We think they will help each other and we don’t think one is going to harm another,” she said.

Inez Ribuestello said Tarboro Brewing Co. is excited about the commitment Capitol Broadcasting Co. has made in the Rocky Mount area with the ongoing development happening at the mixed-use campus.

“We really believe they’re interested in making Eastern North Carolina a better place,” Ribuestello said. “They’ve been great partners to the community. We’re glad to be working with them and set up shop in that area. This is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Two largest brewers trying to boost sales of their cheaper beers
For years, US sales of the cheapest beers fell as America’s two largest brewers focused on higher-priced craft brands. Now the neglected suds are back in the spotlight, The Australian reported on February 3.

Anheuser-Busch InBev plans to air its first Super Bowl ad for Busch, its namesake economy brand. The 30-second spot follows the company’s move last year to shift its Nascar sponsorship back to Busch from Budweiser.

MillerCoors, the US business unit of Molson Coors, has begun rolling out new ads and redesigned logos for its economy beers, including Miller High Life and Keystone. It is increasing the quantity of beer in some bottles and packages, without raising prices. Both companies are offering price promotions on cheaper brands.

Sales of so-called sub-premium brews, costing an average $US16 ($21.90) for a 24-pack, have long been in decline. From 2010 to 2015, shipments dropped by 16 per cent to 46 million barrels, while craft beers shipments doubled to 22 million barrels, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights.

But the sub-premium category still represents about one out of every five beers sold in the US. AB InBev and MillerCoors, together accounting for about two-thirds of US beer sold by volume, acknowledge they must stop the slide ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Rivermen Brewing Co. aiming at spring opening
Belmont residents have been waiting with bated, beer-starved breath for a local brewery to complete its move downtown.

Rivermen Brewing Co. owner Pat Brennan said he understands that local craft beer aficionados are restless. But if all goes well from here on out, the first customers will be able to walk through the door this spring, the Gaston Gazette reported on January 30.

"Right now, we're looking probably at early April," he said this week. "It just adds up to the amount of time it takes to get something like this off the ground. It's the natural progression of things."

Brennan announced a year ago that he would be relocating Rivermen from its original industrial space beside the Catawba River to a brick building at 52 Ervin St. That site is only a block off Main Street, where it stands to gain from downtown foot traffic.

The space is tucked out of view behind the U.S. Post Office in Belmont. But it will gain unique visibility when a new parallel greenway and Belmont trolley line next door become active in the next year or two.

Last June, Brennan was still eyeing a late-summer opening date. But complications tied to redeveloping a historic building with old ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Wise Man Brewing now open in Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem’s Wise Man Brewing opened Saturday, January 28 after a 16-month renovation of the 1929 Angelo Brothers wholesale warehouse, the Greensboro News & Record reported.

The brewery is owned by Jason Morehead, Mike Beverly and Sam Victory. It’s located at 826 Angelo Bros. Ave., near the intersection of North Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

They lease the building, which is owned JHP Investment Properties LLC. Wise Man is in the lower level of the building. The upper level will be available as office space.

Victory, the head brewer, started working with homebrew kits about 10 years ago, according to the brewery’s website. Victory, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, was soon obsessed, and it wasn’t long before he was impressing his friends with his home-brewed beer. They were so impressed that they started asking him when he planned to open his own brewery.

“I learned a lot through Battleground Brewers (a homebrew club in Greensboro). After 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, I was ready to step up and do something different, where I wouldn’t be moving around,” said Victory, who is 50.

“You can work 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry and never create a product. With brewing, this is scientific ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: 16 Lots Brewing preparing to launch in Mason
A former marketing exec and a longtime homebrewer are teaming up to open 16 Lots Brewing in Mason, Cincinnati.com reported on February 1.

It will be located at 753 Reading Road. That's the former Mason Pub space, in a small strip center.

Mike Burton and his family moved from Newport to Mason in August, and he quickly saw what he felt was an opportunity.

"Having lived up here for a short time, there are no breweries up here (in Mason) yet," he said.

In October, he took a package offered at Sunny Delight, where was chief marketing officer, and devoted his full attention to planning a brewery, which he hopes will be the first one to open in Mason.

"It's been a pretty productive three months," said Burton, who is originally from Youngstown, but has lived in Cincinnati twice, most recently beginning in 2007.

His partner, whom Burton isn't naming yet because that person is still working full-time, has an engineering background and has been home brewing for 20-plus years.

Burton said 16 Lots will have six flagship brews. "We want to make sure that when someone comes in for 'their' beer, we have it," he said.

Those standbys will likely be a pilsner, two IPAs, an amber, ...More info on site

Whisky news USA, AR: Core Brewing & Distilling backs out of new distillery project
Core Brewing & Distilling Co. has backed out of a distillery and cooperage project in downtown Fort Smith, the Arkansas News reported on February 1.

The Springdale-based company founded by Fort Smith native Jesse Core purchased the former Times Record printing facility at 1000 Rogers Ave. in Fort Smith in late 2015 with a scheduled two-year timeline to clean out the building and begin barrel production by the fourth quarter of 2017 for an onsite distillery a few blocks from their Core Public House at 701 Rogers Ave.

Jay Richardson, vice president at Core, said on January 31 the recent decision to pull out of the project included "funding issues with the chamber." The building was cleaned out over the course of two months in early 2016.

Core Brewing & Distilling Co. is now prepared to move the project to the other side of the state where a city has "rolled out the red carpet," Richardson said. He could only say at this time the city is on the eastern side of the state.

Tim Allen, president and CEO of the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber continues to be in support of the Core project in downtown Fort Smith and ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries seeks extension to file Q3 results citing recent Central Bureau of Investigation raids on its Bengaluru office
United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd on February 3 sought a one-month extension of the time limit for filing its December quarter results, citing recent Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids on its Bengaluru office, Livemint reported.

Last month, CBI officials raided the premises of Vijay Mallya’s UB Group over a money laundering case and said they were looking into various accounts of the group’s transactions. The raids came days after a Bengaluru debt recovery tribunal (DRT) ruled in favour of a creditors’ consortium led by public sector lender State Bank of India-to recover Rs6,203.35 crore from the former liquor baron.

“During the search, the CBI seized documents/files/hard disks belonging to the finance, legal and secretarial department including the minutes of the Board and general meetings of UBHL,” the company said in a filing with the BSE on February 3.

“As a result of the above, UBHL is not in a position to compile the financial data required for preparation and submission of the financial results and complying with the requirements of filing the Unaudited Financial Results within the prescribed forty five days from the end of the quarter ended December 31, 2016. The circumstances are beyond the control of UBHL,” it added.
