DRY HOPPING: MORE OIL = MORE HOPPY?

ABSTRACT
If I would ask you if you think a higher addition of hop oil equivalent for dry hopping would result in a hoppier beer, I am sure all of you would be quite confident that this is correct. However US researchers say perhaps not. An unhopped beer was dry hopped with 23 individual Cascade hop lots, and the resultant beer was evaluated with sensory descriptive analysis. The results demonstrated a negligible role of total oil content (mL/ 100 g) as an indicator of hoppiness. In fact, there was no correlation between total oil content and overall hop aroma intensity with this study. The Cascade samples had oil contents ranging from 0.6 up to 2 ml/100g of hops. I am as surprised as you are, but wouldn't life be boring without occasional results such as these?

Brewery news USA, MI: New breweries planned in Grand Rapids and Superior
Brewing market in Michigan will expand further this year with new breweries planned in Grand Rapids and Superior, BusinessNorth.com reported on February 9.

When Northern Brewing Company shuttered its doors in 1967, it was Superior's last brewer, but that will change when Tim Nelson and his company Bev-Craft build Earth Rider Brewing Co. to service the Twin Ports, and the South and North Shores of Lake Superior. His announcement was made on February 2.

The craft brewing industry explosion also is making its way into Grand Rapids. At a late January meeting of the Grand Rapids Economic Development Authority (GREDA), commissioners approved a $40,000 Commercial Building Improvement Loan (CBIL) loan to renovate an existing structure to produce and sell craft beer. According to documents filed with the city of Grand Rapids, the loan request was made by Klockow Enterprises, LLC, which plans to launch the Cantankerous Brewing project in October. Owners Andy and Tasha Klockow will renovate a building for the start up venture located at 36 S.E. Tenth Street, which formerly was in use for fleet storage and service for various telecommunications companies.

The Superior brewery will be constructed at 1617 N. Third Street, formerly the Leamon Mercantile Co., between the grain ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Scudrunner Brewing could be in production by June
Holding a sample glass in front of him, Sam Newman notes that to get the full flavor of the beer its best to smell it first, and upon tasting it hold the beverage in your mouth for a second or two. After swallowing exhale through your mouth.

“It might make me seem like a beer snob,” he said with a laugh, while demonstrating, “but in doing this you get the entire flavor.

“You can taste the beer in the front of your mouth, the back, on your tongue and even feel it on your cheeks.”

The brew, a filtered Belgian double of moderate amber colour, comes with an alcohol content of 5.7 to 5.8 per cent, which could be brewed stronger if need be.

It’s a mid-range beer, between the light to dark that Newman and his friend and business partner Dave Jerrett have been developing.

The way the two carry the conversation surrounding beer and brewing techniques, it’s easy to tell they have a passion for the craft, and as a result Gander will soon have a brewery and a beer to call its own, The Gander Beacon reported on February 10.

Four years ago the Gander aviators started developing Scudrunner craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Fresno’s beer scene expanding thanks to old and new breweries
With revitalization efforts well underway in Downtown Fresno, and the success of long-time local breweries Tioga-Sequoia and Full Circle Brewing, other brewers are getting ready to plant their flag near new Fulton Street and revolutionize the area, the Fresno Business Journal reported on February 10.

Already on tap for some time, Sanger brewery House of Pendragon, which has a popular tasting room in Clovis, is teaming up with Visalia restaurant and gastropub Pita Kabob to bring HoP/PK to an old two-story sports bar located at 820 Van Ness Ave. After more than a year of renovation, the long-awaited 32-tap bar and Mediterranean restaurant is finally set to open by June.

While excitement mounts for HoP/PK, three brand new breweries have also announced plans to establish roots in Downtown Fresno this year.

In January, Border Hop Brewing signed a lease on a 9,600 square-foot building at 721 Broadway St. in the South Stadium District. And just down the street, at 411 Broadway St., another business has signed on to bring a brewery and the city’s first craft distillery under the company name 411 Broadway Ales and Spirits. A third operation, Zack’s Brewing, is currently assessing a property a mile and a half ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Zanesville’s Y Bridge Brewing Co. targeting April opening
Ray Ballard is rounding the last turn and coming down the home stretch.

Ballard had hoped to open the Y Bridge Brewing Co. in the fall but he experienced delays in getting federal approval and many of his brewing tanks. After receiving his fermentation tanks Wednesday, Ballard is targeting an early April opening, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported on February 9.

"It's been a long road but it's finally coming together," Ballard said. "I can't wait to finally get out and start selling some beer."

The Y Bridge Brewing Co., located at 1417 Linden Ave., will start with five craft beers. There will be two IPA beers, a cherry stout, a brown ale and a blonde ale. He will also have two barrel aged beers.

The brewery will have a bar, tasting area, production room, walk-in cooler, grain crusher and a 20-barrel brewing system. Ballard also hopes to have an outside patio area for customers to sit when the weather is nice.

Ballard, who is a full-time nurse at Mount Carmel New Albany, plans to handle all of the brewing himself initially. He said if demand increases he will hire an extra brewer but because he's put so much time and effort into the brewery, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Spiral Brewery to open in downtown Hastings
Downtown Hastings will soon be home to a new brewery with a name paying homage to an iconic feature in Hastings history, the Spiral Bridge. Spiral Brewery plans to open its doors in July 2017. The brewery will be located at 111 E. Second St., the Hastings Star Gazette reported on February 13.

Some of the faces behind the new brewery are Hastings natives Nick and Amy Fox. Nick and Amy are Hastings High School graduates of 2002 who moved back to Hastings after attending college at Gustavus Adolphus. One of their favorite things to do over the past 10 years has been traveling to different breweries, whether it is in Portland or Denver or somewhere in California or Wisconsin. Those experiences really fed their love of craft beer, Nick said.

"We wanted to do something that fed into our passion and our love and also our love for our town," Nick said.

Nick and Amy started talking about what they could do with Nick's sister, Jen Fox, and that's when the idea of a brewery in downtown Hastings came up.

"We thought it would really fit and it was something we were passionate about and it just jived with everything, so we started ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Altruist Brewing Company just months away from opening its doors
A new brewery is just months away from rolling out the red carpet and opening its doors in Central Massachusetts. Construction is underway in Sturbridge at the future home of Altruist Brewing Company, which has just a few items left on its grand to-do list before it can share its beers with the neighbourhood, Eater Boston reported on February 10.

Husband-and-wife team Nancy and Bob Bixby are the brains behind Altruist: Nancy serves as the brewery’s business manager, and Bob is the head brewer. Along with partner and brewer Ryan LaFortune, the team has been testing beers and perfecting recipes while they attain the necessary licenses for Altruist and await the equipment installation and completion of the buildout.

“We’re full bore in construction mode, cutting up the concrete floor for the plumbing,” Nancy told Eater. Altruist is taking over a section of the building at 559 Main St. that was formerly used for storage, she said. They met with the building’s owner, who at first didn’t think there would be enough room for a brewery, but Bob pointed out the space near a loading dock on one side of the building, and they determined it would work just fine. “We just loved ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Wise Man Brewing launched in Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem is raising a frothy glass of beer to downtown’s latest addition: Wise Man Brewing, Old Gold & Black reported on February 10.

Teaching an old building new tricks, Wise Man renovated the 86-year-old Angelo Bros. Wholesale Surplus on Angelo Brothers Ave. for the taproom and brewery. Since opening, Wise Man Brewing has quickly become a hot spot downtown.

Wise Man Brewing celebrated their long-awaited opening on Saturday, Jan. 28 with an estimated 3,800 guests. According to Michael, a bartender at Wise Man, the brewery went through 35 kegs to satisfy roughly 1,600 bar tabs on opening day. An entire team of managers, owners and employees zipped around the bar delivering beer to customers.

“I really enjoy the people that come here,” Michael said. “And the people that work here are great. Everyone gets involved, and everyone has experience.”

In addition to three Wise Man beers on tap, the brewery also featured beers from local Carolina breweries like Foothills, Liberty, Four Saints, Haw River, Unknown and Bull City. The most popular beers include dry-hopped cream ale Scoop Dogg and Creamsicle Collaboration IPA. Although both beers were “kicked,” or empty, during my visit, I settled on Wise Man’s Tickled Earth, a flavorful dark Saison.

“Besides the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Gunbarrel Brewing Company plans to open in late March or early April
Gunbarrel Brewing Company will soon be opening a 20,000 square foot location at 7088 Winchester Circle in Boulder, the Left Hand Valley Courier reported on February 11.

Husband and wife owners Jamie and Marie Fox have had this plan in place for years, and it will finally be coming to fruition.

“We have been planning and working on opening a brewery here in Gunbarrel for the last three years,” Marie said. “We’ve always wanted to open a brewery, and we thought ‘why not do it now?’ Instead of waiting for retirement or something.”

Jamie, who has a background in neuroscience, and Marie, who worked previously in marketing-related fields, have been home brewing beers for around 17 years.

“We don’t specialize in any one type of beer,” Marie said. “We make the things that we like to drink, that varies based on the weather and our mood, as it does with many people. So we will keep a varied tap list.”

They also have a good working dynamic.

“Jamie manages all of the brewing operations and planning,” Marie said. “I have a marketing and hospitality background, so I do everything for the tap room and all of that. It’s kind of like yin and yang.”

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors Ontario plant workers continue strike
Molson Coors plant workers in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, have been on strike since January 12, 2017, after a list of concessionary demands were made by the brewer that negatively impacted employee benefits, pensions, and hours, BeverageDaily reported on February 15.

The concessionary demands made by Molson Coors would make “deep cuts” to retirement security and health and welfare benefits and the company “left no room for negotiations,” president of Canadian Union of Brewery and General Workers Local 325), Robert Folk, said in a statement.

With the help and guidance of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), 320 plant workers have formed a picket line and started a boycott against Molson Coors’ US-produced beers.

As a result of the strike, beer production at the Toronto plant is mostly shut down with Molson Coors being unable to access its products.

“The list of demands just about attacks every part of the collective agreement,” president of OPSEU Warren “Smokey” Thomas, told BeverageDaily.

According to Thomas, OPSEU bargains 754 contracts a year and is able to settle about 99% of those contracts. “The ones that go out on a strike start out with the employer attacking every part of the collective agreement there is,” he said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Akronym Brewing LLC hopes to launch in Akron this fall
Akronym Brewing LLC, a new production brewery and tasting room that hopes to launch in downtown Akron this fall, is looking to be compared to the city’s brewing greats, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on February 14.

“We’re going to be making world-class beer like Thirsty Dog and Hoppin’ Frog,” co-founder and brewer Shawn Adams said. “Our main thing is we’re going to focus on quality.”

Thirsty Dog and Hoppin’ Frog are the city’s two established breweries that have won multiple awards at national and international beer competitions.

Adams and longtime homebrewing friends Josh Blubaugh and Aaron Cruikshank — who all live in Akron — are signing a five-year agreement to lease vacant, city-owned retail space at the High/Market parking garage.

The street-level property, at 58 E. Market St., is across the street from the Crave restaurant and around the corner from the Akron Art Museum and Akron-Summit County Public Library. The Akronym partners hope to be an anchor in the area and spur additional development there.

“We found that spot through the city and couldn’t be more excited about where we’re at,” Adams said.

City Council is expected to approve the lease agreement at its next meeting on Feb. 27. The agreement calls for annual ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Common Bond Brewers owners just signed lease for first production facility
Montgomery will soon be home to its first production brewery, WSFA reported on February 11.

The craft beer industry has taken off in recent years and now Montgomery will have a place to call their own.

Two Montgomery residents just signed a lease for what will soon be known as Common Bond Brewers, and the owners hope the new business will help folks achieve just that, a common bond over a pint.

Located at 424 Bibb St., Head Brewmaster Andrew McNally hopes to be open in the fall of 2017. He and his partner, Tim Doles, just have to renovate a 71-year-old building downtown first.

The brewery will include a taproom for beer tasting and packaged beer for sale. Common Bond Brews will eventually also be on tap in Montgomery restaurants and bars and available to purchase in stores.

McNally has a passion for home brewing and has a background in chemistry. He says a brewery has the potential to be a pillar of the community and he thinks Common Bond Brewers is filling a void in Montgomery.

"Something that people can, as they're driving down 65 or 85 wherever they're going to the beach or north towards the city or to the mountains, it's a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Truth or Consequences Brewing Co. to join growing New Mexico beer scene by this summer
New Mexico can add yet another brewery to its list. Matt Geisel, economic development secretary, announced on February 13 that Truth or Consequences Brewing Co. will join the growing New Mexico brew scene by the summer of 2017, the Albuquerque Business First reported.

This will be the first brewery to open in the T or C area. The closest brewhouses, according to a New Mexico Brewers Guild map, are in Silver City.

Truth or Consequences Brewing Co. is a part of the MainStreet program that plans on growing T or C's downtown district. "This project illustrates how our economic development incentives are working for homegrown New Mexico companies," said Geisel in a press release.

New Mexico's state closing fund, LEDA, will provide $125,000 for the project. LEDA helps recruit new businesses to New Mexico while helping those that are already here grow and thrive, according to the release.

"Thanks to the utility of the LEDA incentive and our partnership with the state and local government, we have the opportunity to start our business in a community that we love," brewery co-owner John Masterson said in a press release.

The brewery expects to create nine new production jobs over the next five years as it ramps ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Collision Bend Brewing Co. two months from opening in Cleveland
It has a name, and soon it will have beer: Collision Bend Brewing Co. - the Zack Bruell-Luke Purcell brewery and brewpub on the East Bank of the Flats - is two months from opening, Cleveland.com reported on February 14.

Restaurateur Bruell and brewer Purcell are targeting tax day, April 15, as their opening, in time for patrons to enjoy sitting outside on warm-weather days and watching boats swoosh by amid the backdrop of bridges.

Recently, a 15-barrel fermenter from Oregon was put in place in with a pair of 30-barrel fermenters coming along with a 30-barrel brite tank for holding or kegging. Brewery news USA, FL: Bottlenose Brewery to open its doors in Jacksonville in early March
Jacksonville's Tinseltown area is about to get a new craft brewery and taproom.

Bottlenose Brewery plans to open its doors in early March at the former World of Beer location in Tinseltown, Action News Jax reported on February 13.

A company spokesperson says the location will eventually brew its own beer but first will boast an unparalleled selection of beers from Jacksonville and the state of Florida.

Bottlenose Brewery social media manager Jordan De Lugo said the idea for the new brewery came together very quickly.

He said Mark Stillman, majority owner of Green Room Brewing at Jacksonville Beach, wanted to start a new venture for a while but was looking for the right opportunity.

That opportunity presented itself when World of Beer shut its doors in August.

De Lugo said the building needed some work. He said the kitchen space left behind by World of Beer was lacking, so they added more equipment in order to serve a larger menu.

He said there's also some cosmetic work that will take some time but the taproom will eventually feature 50 taps from Jacksonville and throughout Florida.

The location will add 15 new jobs to the area, and the company is already hosting open interviews.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Partake Brewing to focus on non-alcoholic craft beer
Sober Torontonians can still enjoy craft beer thanks to a new local business, MetroNews Canada reported on February 16.

When Ted Fleming was diagnosed with Crohns disease in 2005, doctors told him he should no longer drink, and he wanted to find a solution.

“The problem was, I just enjoyed my beer and its taste,” said Fleming, an engineering graduate from Queen’s University.

“But more than anything, I enjoyed the camaraderie it brought around friends and family. A lot of people take that for granted until it’s taken away.”

To fill that void he decided to launch Premium Near Beer, a company he believes is the first in North American alcohol-free craft beer. His store – which also serves as an online marketplace – carries over 20 types of beer in addition to non-alcoholic wine, ciders, rum and spirits, most of which are imported from Europe.

By next month, he’s hoping to launch his own production under the Partake Brewing brand. He sees his venture as an important addition to the city’s growing craft beer scene.

“Pretty much every bar in Europe serves non-alcoholic beer, not just in bottle but also available on draught,” he said, noting Toronto’s next logical step is to catch up.

Brewery news India: Asking Vijay Mallya to step down from United Breweries board was merely following a regulatory order - Heineken
United Breweries merely followed a regulatory order in asking chairman Vijay Mallya to step down, Heineken NV, the Indian brewer’s largest shareholder, said in its first comment on the businessman since he got embroiled in a series of cases related to overdue loans, the Economic Times reported.

Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer, said also there had not been any disruption to its Indian business or management after partner United Breweries sent the notice to Mallya.

About three weeks ago, the Securities and Exchange Board of India banned Mallya from the securities market as well as holding any board or key managerial positions at listed companies. The order also covered some former executives of United Spirits, a company Mallya previously owned and is now controlled by UK’s Diageo. Mallya, according to legal experts, is expected to challenge the Sebi order.

Sebi issued an executive order to Mallya and it was not the will of the shareholders or board of directors, but just a court order that had to be executed, Jean-Francois van Boxmeer, Heineken’s chairman of the executive board, said on an investors call on February 14.

“It’s for Dr Mallya to react on that if he ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia opts to tighten its belt instead of hiking its beer prices
Heineken Malaysia Bhd says it has opted to tighten its belt amid the challenging market condition via various cost management measures and will not increase prices of products any time soon, The Star Online reported on February 16.

Its finance director Teo Hong Keng said any price increase will only be carried out on the basis of commercial consideration, which among others include commodity price hikes on the backdrop of global uncertainties.

“We need to weigh it out first to see if the market can accept a price increase. However, in a soft market such as this, we have resorted to tightening our belts to keep costs down,” said Teo at the sidelines of Heineken’s financial results announcement for the quarter ended Dec 31, 2016.

Heineken last increased price of products in July, 2016 after the implementation of Anti Profiteering Act.

Teo said because the company was part of Heineken N V, it benefitted them as the group purchased raw materials under the global procurement.

Hence it wasn’t too worried about the rising raw material prices.

Despite the subdued economic landscape, Heineken posted a good set of results for its financial quarter ended Dec 31, 2016.

Its net profit was up 15.2% at RM104.68 mln from RM90.84 ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg launches competition for craft brewers
Carlsberg UK has launched a competition for craft brewers and importers offering the chance to get their beer listed in its ‘Crafted 2017’ portfolio, the Morning Advertiser reported on February 15.

Brewers can enter the contest, named 'Your beer, here?' by submitting their beers for evaluation by a judging panel including beer writer Pete Brown, Mark Stretton of Fleet Street Communications and members of the Crafted portfolio team.

The winning selection will be showcased in the company’s Crafted portfolio and handbook when it launches in April – making it available to thousands of pubs over the next 12 months.

Carlsberg Crafted marketing manager Adrian Rigby said: “The craft beer category is brilliant, diverse and innovative but, above all, it’s competitive and the route to market can be challenging.

“As a brewer, we are committed to building the craft beer category and community in the on-trade and believe that through this opportunity and the established profile of our award-winning Crafted handbook, we can give and up-and-coming craft stars a hand.”

Brewery news UK: Heineken’s deal to acquire pub chain Punch Taverns under antitrust probe
Heineken's deal to acquire pub chain Punch Taverns could be under threat as the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) probes the agreement, Sky News reported on February 16.

The CMA has issued an 'invitation to comment' to interested parties as it looks at whether the deal, which will see Heineken take over almost 2,000 pubs in the UK, could result in a "substantial lessening of competition".

Concerns have already been raised about the deal by parts of the licensed industry, and this move by the CMA will allow them to formally submit their reasons for opposing the deal.

Heineken clinched a deal to take over the Punch Taverns company in partnership with private equity firm Patron Capital.

The two firms successfully fought off a counterbid by Punch Taverns' co-founder, Alan McIntosh, by offering to pay 180p-per-share for the company.

It will see Heineken acquire 1,895 UK pubs on top of the 1,100 it already controls, with Patron securing the remaining 1,329.

The CMA said it was "considering whether it is or may be the case that this transaction, if carried into effect, will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation" and, if so, "whether the creation of that situation may be expected to result, ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria denies Pharma Deko’s debt claims
Guinness Nigeria Plc on February 17 said it had responded to a court process at the instance of Pharma Deko Plc which alleged that the company was contractually indebted to Pharma Deko Plc in the sum of N175. 7 million, the Guardian reported.

Corporate Communications Manager, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr Sesan Sobowale, said in a statement the amount represented an arbitral award made against the company and in favour of Pharma Deko Plc.

It said that the award suggested that Guinness Nigeria was unable to pay this debt.

“Guinness Nigeria denies that it is indebted to Pharma Deko Plc in the stated amount or any amount at all and its solicitors have filed a robust defence to Pharma Deko’s claims in court.

“The amount claimed by Pharma Deko Plc in the court process is an insignificant amount when compared with the revenue, cashflow and balance sheet of the company and management is very confident of being able to repudiate the claims in court.

“The management of Guinness Nigeria wishes to assure its employees, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders that it is capable of meeting its financial and other obligations to its various stakeholders and that it continues to operate as a going concern,’’ the statement said.
