LATER HARVEST DATE =
MORE INTENSE DRY HOP AROMA?
ABSTRACT
Previous studies have shown that harvest date can
have a significant impact on the flavour profile of
beer depending on hop variety. To further illustrate
the effect, this study evaluated the variety Mandarina
Bavaria. A group of German researchers produced dry
hopped beers with Mandarina Bavaria hops harvested
at different dates within a 4 week period. Although
it was shown that some of the known important hop
aromatic compounds in dry hopped beers (especially
myrcene) changed in concentration when using hops with different harvest dates, with other compounds (especially linalool) the result of sensory data
showed that the harvest date of Mandarina Bavaria
is not important for final top-fermented beer aroma.
It is unclear which aroma components are the key
components of Mandarina Bavaria.

UK: Lager accounts for 75% of total beer sales
|
Craft and cask beer may get all the headlines but lager remains the most important style in the UK, accounting for almost three quarters of sales, inapub reported on February 22.
75 per cent of beer sales in the UK are lager, Mintel analysts said.
The market has plateaued in recent years but Mintel expect this to give way to "modest growth" over the next few years, with sales reaching £13.1 billion by 2020.
Tapping into the lucrative "with food" market would help lager's fortunes further, with 30 per cent of beer drinkers already typically drinking beer, rather than wine, with food.
Changing glassware may also generate growth, with women showing a clear preference for smaller serves and Chalice-shaped glassware, according to Mintel research.
Classic pint glasses remain popular with other drinkers however, 27 per cent of on-trade beer drinkers saying they prefer a nonic glass and 16 per cent a tulip glass.
The category continues to benefit from housing some of the biggest retail brands in the UK, with Stella Artois, Foster's, Carlsberg, Budweiser and Carling making up the top five.
AB InBev's purchase of SAB Miller last year (2016) has led to further consolidation of the market and analysts suggest this could lead to

Ireland: Analysts expect Ireland’s craft beer to repeat the history of the US craft beer sector
|
Walk into any Irish bar or off–license today, and you will find yourself being treated to a plethora of gins, craft beers, and bespoke cocktails. With over 30 craft distilleries and 62 production micro-breweries operating in Ireland with numerous brands each, the question must be asked, will the craft industry’s bubble burst?
A representative of Foley’s Bar on Merrion Row speaking to the Observer explained that: “the growth we noticed in gin, craft beer, and cocktail sales from 2015-2016 was remarkable. However, in recent months, including the Christmas period, cocktails and craft beers have seen a decline in sales, the same can be said for premium sales but to a lesser extent.”
As of 2015, gin was worth €75 million to the Irish drinks industry. Brands such as Hendrick’s, Brockmans, and the Irish distilled Dingle Gil, lead the premium market. This left less room for craft distilleries to gain appropriate market share. In contrast, Irish brewed craft beer was worth around €40 million in 2015 and has a projected revenue of €59 million in 2016, with similar market share concerns.
Between the years of 2012 to 2015, the craft beer industry boomed in Ireland. Consumers drank 197,000 hectolitres of homebrewed stouts, ales and

Sri Lanka: Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Ltd changes name to Heineken Lanka Limited
|
Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Ltd changed its corporate identity to Heineken Lanka Limited with effect from February 13, 2017, the Daily Mirror reported.
The change in the corporate identity is to better reflect the relationship with the Heineken Group and the presence in Sri Lanka as a full-fledged subsidiary of the Heineken Group.
Commenting on the corporate identity change, Managing Director of Heineken Lanka Ltd, Dusty Alahakoon said, “We are delighted to change our corporate identity from Asia pacific Brewery (Lanka) Ltd to Heineken Lanka Ltd. This clearly reflects to all our stakeholders that we are now part of a global network of Heineken Group. We believe this change in identity will have a positive impact on our business with our consumers, customers and other stakeholders”.
Prior to 2005, the company was known as United Breweries Ltd which was changed in 2005 to Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Ltd, when Singapore based Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd invested in Sri Lanka. In 2012, HEINEKEN Group fully acquired the Singapore based Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd, which resulted in the integration of the Sri Lanka business to the Heineken Group. Heineken Lanka operates a brewery in Mawathagama, Kurunegala, which brews international and

World: Trade agreements signed, expanded, and cancelled
|
The Trade Committee of the European Parliament has approved the CETA Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU. Vote of the full assembly will follow mid-February. Most import taxes for grains and grain products will be lowered by 7.5% annually during an 8-year transition period, after which duties will be zero on both sides, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported early in February.
The TTIP negotiations with the USA will certainly be discontinued under the Trump administration. The TPP (trans-Pacific) agreement has been cancelled, and the NAFTA agreement in North America is under threat of revisions as well, mostly between the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico and Canada are the second and third largest customers of U.S. agri-products.
As of this year the DCFTA (deep and comprehensive FTA) between the EU and the Ukraine is in force. The duty-free quantity of barley imports into the EU rises from 250 to 270,000 tonnes. An additional annual quota of 350,000 tonnes of barley will be decided upon in spring.
