LATER HARVEST DATE =
MORE INTENSE DRY HOP AROMA?
ABSTRACT
Previous studies have shown that harvest date can
have a significant impact on the flavour profile of
beer depending on hop variety. To further illustrate
the effect, this study evaluated the variety Mandarina
Bavaria. A group of German researchers produced dry
hopped beers with Mandarina Bavaria hops harvested
at different dates within a 4 week period. Although
it was shown that some of the known important hop
aromatic compounds in dry hopped beers (especially
myrcene) changed in concentration when using hops with different harvest dates, with other compounds (especially linalool) the result of sensory data
showed that the harvest date of Mandarina Bavaria
is not important for final top-fermented beer aroma.
It is unclear which aroma components are the key
components of Mandarina Bavaria.

sensory evaluation of dry-hopped top-fermented beer

USA, CA: Stone Brewing set to make big splash with new brewery in Napa this spring
|
Craft beer giant Stone Brewing is set to make a big splash with a brewery, taproom and restaurant in the historic Borreo Building downtown Napa later this spring. It operates under this philosophy: “Beer is just as good, and sometimes better, than wine”, the North Bay Business Journal reported.
“Beer, especially artisanal craft beer, is multidimensional in character and is now perceived as belonging at the dinner table,” said Greg Koch, executive chairman and co-founder.
A frequent visitor and huge fan of the Napa Valley, Koch said the company wasn’t really looking for another outlet. But the Borreo Building, with its history and prime location at Third Street and Soscol Avenue on the Napa River, was a perfect fit.
“I’ve been coming here [to Napa] for 25 years,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite places. And the Borreo is such an iconic, stand-alone building, and overlooking the river, the location can’t be beat.”
Koch opened Stone Brewing with Steve Wagner in 1996. It ranked as the 10th largest U.S. craft brewer and the country’s 15th brewing company overall, according to 2015 figures, the most recent, from Colorado-based Brewers Association. The Napa location will join Stone Brewing’s other operations in Southern California’s Escondido; Richmond,

USA, KY: Country Boy Brewing opens the doors of its second location in Georgetown
|
Less than two weeks after celebrating the five-year anniversary of its Lexington location, Country Boy Brewing officially has opened the doors on its new, much larger Georgetown location, Smiley Pete reported on February 15.
The new facility – located at 108 Corporate Drive and launched on February 17 - includes a partly covered 5,000-square-foot patio, a 6-acre campus (with first right of refusal on another 4 acres), three automatic glass garage doors, a private room, 36 taps and a 4,000-square-foot tap room.
The tap room is more than four times larger than Country Boy’s 900-square-foot Lexington location. All totaled, the Georgetown location covers more than 23,000-square-feet and cost $7 million to make.
“It’s a unique experience in the craft beer scene to be able to sit here and you’re looking at old barns and farmland and bluegrass,” said co-owner and brand manager Daniel “D.H.” Harrison, who owns Country Boy with Jeff Beagle, Nathan Coppage and Evan Coppage.
According to Harrison, who grew up nearby, Georgetown’s recent and projected growth made it an ideal setting for a second location.
“Scott County is the fastest-growing county in the state,” said Harrison. “A lot of stuff happening. I think we’re in a good spot. It’s

Canada, BC: B.C. Brew Co. & Distilling expected to open in Kamloops later this year
|
Kamloops This Week reports that the owner of Canada’s largest hops farm has started construction on a brewing and distilling facility that is expected to open later this year just outside of Kamloops.
B.C. Brew Co. & Distilling is being founded by Joey Bedard, owner of Hops Canada, a hops brokerage that opened a 200-plus acre hops farm last year in partnership with the Tk’emlups Indian Band.
The new venture is being established on an 11-hectare site in Monte Creek that will eventually feature a brewery, distillery, malting room, tasting room, and a small plot of hops. In addition to locally grown hops, B.C. barley will be used in producing the beer, and local potatoes have been sourced for making vodka.
While construction continues on the new facility, Bedard has contracted a brewery in Kewlona to produce B.C. Brew Co. beer, which has been on tap at bars throughout the area since late last year.

USA, CA: East Brother Beer Company launches new brewery in Richmond
|
East Brother Beer Company opened the doors to its new brewery and tap room, the first to call Richmond home. Founded by Chris Coomber and Rob Lightner, longtime friends and Bay Area residents, East Brother Beer Company is committed to bringing beer back to its classic roots, Brewbound.com reported.
“We admire the genuine, hard-working people and businesses found in Richmond. We love the quiet, unassuming nature of the city, which we feel is reflected in our beers – five classic styles that evoke the same basic, but familiar vintage feel,” says Co-founder Rob Lightner.
Tucked up against the hills of Miller Knox Regional Park on Canal Boulevard, East Brother’s production facility and taproom are housed in a 12,000-square foot warehouse where the taproom shares open space with a custom-designed, 20-barrel stainless steel brewing system. A useful “fence” of raw materials – malt, barley, hops – separates the two, illustrating the art of beer making and allowing for public view.
The 3,000-square foot taproom features a casual, inviting atmosphere, indoor-outdoor seating, and an oversized, glass roll-up door seamlessly connecting the two. Inside, the poured concrete floors and signature EB | CA logo wall make for a clean contemporary backdrop to a classic wood 14-seat

USA, MO: Lost Signal Brewing now open in Springfield
|
Springfield is now home to four local breweries, as Lost Signal Brewing opened their doors in downtown Springfield this week, KY3 reported on February 17.
"It seems like Springfield has a real desire for shopping and eating and drinking local. And just keeping true to who we are," said Tyler Hoke, Owner of Lost Signal Brewing. "We're the only barbecue place that makes their own beer in Springfield and Springfield people love their barbecue too, so."
For Hoke, beer and barbecue seemed like a perfect fit. As did the old, brick building on West College Street where they're now located.
The building used to be a radio station and still has the old antennae up on the roof. Even though the building has sat empty for a couple of years, Hoke wanted to incorporate that history into the new business. That's where they came up with the name Lost Signal Brewing.
"I just sat down and started writing every name I could and then got friends to help," Hoke said. "I don't know who came up with it, but that name stuck."
Right now - there are four beers on tap, but more will be added soon. The beers will also be rotated often to

Canada, ON: Orillia Brewing getting ready for summer opening
|
The Orillia Packet & Times reports that downtown Orillia will soon be home to the city’s first craft brewery.
Orillia Brewing is being founded by eight local partners – Bob Chorny, Jack Steenhof, Dennis Lee, Matt Miller, Rob Meeder, Bob Robinson, Scott Weiler, and John Olieux – who have been homebrewing together for the last three years.
The group has taken possession of a property at 162 Mississaga St. E. that previously housed a printing shop and clothing store (pictured above), and has received approval from city council for their official plan and a zoning bylaw amendment. Along with a brewhouse that is expected to arrive in May, the facility will also feature a restaurant and retail store.
Head brewer Alex McGarvey has been hired to oversee the creation and brewing of beers that will be marketed under the Koochaching Brewing name. Weiler said the brewery’s “flagship beer will be something that’s not too crazy, maybe like a kolsch, or a blond ale. We’ll have an (India pale ale) and a stout. We’ll probably have about four brands that are on all the time and maybe eight in total, sort of seasonal varieties.”
Orillia Brewing is expected to open this summer.

USA, MD: Diageo wanting a special liquor licence sparkles debate
|
A battle over beer is brewing in Maryland, the Baltimore Sun reported on February 19.
State lawmakers are faced with competing proposals to change the rules for breweries, which have exploded in popularity in recent years as drinkers turn away from mass-produced corporate beers in favor of craft brews.
And there's a big new player in the debate this year: Diageo, the international liquor giant that owns the Guinness beer brand and plans to open a brewery and taproom in an old rum bottling plant in Relay.
"We want to create a world-class beer tourism destination," said Dwayne Kratt, Diageo's senior director of state government affairs.
It's an idea that's drawn enthusiastic support from politicians and economic development officials, who are eager to pass a law to ensure that the Guinness project moves forward. Diageo says it will invest $50 million to renovate the building and create 70 jobs.
First, Diageo faces a fight with other brewers and the owners of bars and liquor stores over how it needs the General Assembly to alter the state laws that govern how breweries operate in Maryland.
While Diageo wants the state to create a special liquor license for its planned operation, the Brewers Association of Maryland argues that

USA, NC: Pitt Street Brewing Co construction works well underway in Greenville
|
Renovation work at the former Coca-Cola bottling plant on Pitt Street is “well underway” to prepare for the opening of Greenville’s third craft brewery, the Greenville Daily Reflector reported on February 18.
Mike McCarty — a partner in the Pitt Street Brewing Co., 630 S. Pitt St. — said renovations to the building are scheduled to be completed within the next 90 days.
“Everything is going great and construction is well underway,” McCarty said. “We hope to have everything up and ready to go by late spring.”
On February 17, the Pitt Street Brewing Co. received notice that it has received approval for a $45,000 grant through North Carolina’s Rural Economic Development Division Building Reuse Grant program. The program provides grants to local governments to assist businesses with renovating vacant buildings or expanding an existing business.
The company — which will be a full-production brewery with a canning line for regional distribution — will create at least nine full-time jobs with an annual salary averaging $32,000 a year. The business’ partners are investing more than $500,000 in improvements to the property.
“We are really excited that we received this grant from the state,” McCarty said. “We are planning to use it to getting this building

USA, CO: Big Choice Brewing moving to Brighton
|
Big Choice Brewing, one of the first breweries to put down roots in Broomfield, is moving to Brighton, the Broomfield Enterprise reported.
Big Choice, 7270 W. 118th Place, expects to open late May at its new location at 21 S. First Ave. in Brighton.
Until that happens, the current taproom will remain open.
Big Choice opened in May 2012, and since then has been faced with "growing pains" of a small two-level taproom off a cul-de-sac in an industrial park, a news release from the company said. The company expanded beyond taproom draft sales in March 2013 into distribution across the Front Range.
A search for a new space began more than two years ago. Owners were close to finalizing a deal in the Broomfield area, but it fell through in December.
Big Choice will move to a historic Buddhist temple built in Brighton in 1940 by Japanese-Americans as a place of worship, according to the release.
The owners have leased the Broomfield property for the past five years, Miller said, and signed a lease for the Brighton building last week.
"We searched all over Broomfield, Arvada, Thornton, and within close proximity to where our regular customers lived, but it became clear after seeing the Buddhist temple

UK: Lager accounts for 75% of total beer sales
|
Craft and cask beer may get all the headlines but lager remains the most important style in the UK, accounting for almost three quarters of sales, inapub reported on February 22.
75 per cent of beer sales in the UK are lager, Mintel analysts said.
The market has plateaued in recent years but Mintel expect this to give way to "modest growth" over the next few years, with sales reaching £13.1 billion by 2020.
Tapping into the lucrative "with food" market would help lager's fortunes further, with 30 per cent of beer drinkers already typically drinking beer, rather than wine, with food.
Changing glassware may also generate growth, with women showing a clear preference for smaller serves and Chalice-shaped glassware, according to Mintel research.
Classic pint glasses remain popular with other drinkers however, 27 per cent of on-trade beer drinkers saying they prefer a nonic glass and 16 per cent a tulip glass.
The category continues to benefit from housing some of the biggest retail brands in the UK, with Stella Artois, Foster's, Carlsberg, Budweiser and Carling making up the top five.
AB InBev's purchase of SAB Miller last year (2016) has led to further consolidation of the market and analysts suggest this could lead to

Between the years of 2012 to 2015, the craft beer industry boomed in Ireland. Consumers drank 197,000 hectolitres of homebrewed stouts, ales and
