DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
In dry hopping it is all about extracting the flavours
from the hop particles. German researchers
closely examined particle size during dry hopping, as
the process of pellet disintegration of very important.
Fast swelling hop pellets with small particle size
distribution are seen as ideal for dry hopping. Swelling
velocity was found to be both temperature and variety
independent. The researchers also found that the
swelling volume is higher in low alpha varieties. As
sedimentation of particles happens quickly, agitation
is suggested for better extraction. They also found the
lower particle size distribution of pellets is beneficial in
this context compared to the properties of hop powder
prior to pelletization. These insights should help to
make dry hopping more efficient!

AB InBev, the world's biggest beer brewer, has acquired a significant stake in one of China's best known craft brewers, in a move that shakes up the country's tiny but booming craft beer scene and, the slumping beer giant hopes, its own bottom line, Fortune reported on March 2.
The company's quarterly earnings announcement on March 2 disappointed investors, who sent the stock falling 3% after AB InBev missed analyst estimates for the seventh quarter in a row. The sluggish results provided further explanation for why AB InBev was willing to spend $103 billion to buy rival SABMiller and why it is pushing hard for growth in markets like China. AB InBev has also been investing in craft brands, buying nine U.S. craft brewers over the past six years.
Boxing Cat Brewery in Shanghai wasn't the city's first craft brewer when a trio of businessmen - one American, one Canadian, one Chinese - opened it in 2008. Myanmar: Kirin hoping to tap into Myanmar beer market’s swift growth
|
Japanese brewer Kirin is hoping to tap into swift growth - and serious staying power - with its latest investment in Myanmar's fizzing beer market, a senior executive said on March 3, The Business Times reported.
Last month the beer giant took a controlling stake in Mandalay Brewery for US$4.3 million, topping off its more than half a billion investment in top producer Myanmar Brewery in 2015.
Myanmar Brewery deputy managing director Hideki Mitsuhashi predicted sales will grow in line with GDP at around 7 per cent a year.
In the long-run, he said Myanmar's drinkers can also knock it back for longer than their regional counterparts.
"Myanmar people are very, very strong for alcohol," he told AFP.
"We have a kit to measure resistance to drink... They are much stronger than Japanese and Chinese."
Myanmar beer consumption rates are currently among the lowest in Asia.
Drinkers chug down around three litres per head each year, according to Euromonitor, a fraction of the more than 40 litres drunk in neighbouring Vietnam or over 30 in Laos.
But the market has been brewing since a quasi-civilian government took over in 2011 and introduced a raft of economic reforms that have uncorked a market long stifled by military rule.

Heineken will enjoy the short-term Brexit benefits in the UK on-trade, trade marketing manager, Paul Gordon, was quoted as saying by Imbibe on March 2.
‘It has been an interesting 12 months, with the results of the referendum and the change that would bring,’ Gordon said. ‘Bizarrely what we have seen since is actually a pretty good set of results. We are seeing inflation staying quite low and production and manufacturing going up to the highest number in 17 years. We have seen unemployment go down and retail value go up.
‘In the short term it has been quite good but we also know behind that there is some other stuff round the corner. We know there is going to be an impact on inflation and the cost of goods if you are bringing things in from outside the UK. There could be an impact on living wage and availability of staff etc. So there is a lot of uncertainty still to come and we have yet to see the real impact of Brexit. It’s one to keep watching but it is one to enjoy the benefits of in the short term as well,’ he said at a Heineken briefing on March

South Africa: AB InBev commits to invest R610 mln in increasing hop production
|
AB InBev and SABMiller’s R610-million investment in the agricultural sector is set to turn South African Breweries Hop Farms (SABHF) into a net exporter and grow production by 250 tonnes annually, the Press Reader reported on March 2.
The global brewer announced on March 1 it was committed to investing R610 mln by 2021 in raising hop production, creating employment and upskilling workers by investing in research and development.
There are 424 hectares of hops under cultivation in the southern Cape.
SABHF and contracted private growers harvest less than 1% of the world’s production of 855 tonnes a year. Of this, about 735 tonnes are for SAB and the local craft beer industry, while 120 tonnes are exported to the rest of Africa, primarily for SAB beers.
