A CLOSE UP - HOP PARTICLES IN DRY HOPPING

ABSTRACT
In dry hopping it is all about extracting the flavours from the hop particles. German researchers closely examined particle size during dry hopping, as the process of pellet disintegration of very important. Fast swelling hop pellets with small particle size distribution are seen as ideal for dry hopping. Swelling velocity was found to be both temperature and variety independent. The researchers also found that the swelling volume is higher in low alpha varieties. As sedimentation of particles happens quickly, agitation is suggested for better extraction. They also found the lower particle size distribution of pellets is beneficial in this context compared to the properties of hop powder prior to pelletization. These insights should help to make dry hopping more efficient!

Brewery news USA, NE: Bill would increase Nevada craft beer production, but sellers oppose plan
A bill seeking to increase the amount of beer Nebraska’s craft breweries can produce annually ran into a foamy wall of opposition from large liquor interests during a legislative hearing on March 1, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Senate Bill 130 from Sen. James Settelmeyer, R-Minden, would increase the allowed production capacity from 15,000 barrels to 45,000 barrels a year. A barrel is the equivalent of 31 gallons.

Settelmeyer said his proposal is aimed at helping small businesses in Nevada grow.

“It’s great that we have large corporations that come into Nevada with their products.” he said. “By the same respect I tend to believe we should do what we can to foster these smaller businesses within this state. “This is a growing industry, to say the least,” Settelmeyer told the Commerce and Labor Committee, which took no immediate action on the bill.

Jaron Hildebrand, representing the Craft Brewers Manufacturing Group, told the panel that Oregon and Washington have no limits on barrel capacity, while neighboring Utah has a 60,000-barrel limit.

Tom Young, brew master and owner of the Great Basin Brewing businesses in Reno and Sparks, said Nevada is behind the times. If he wants to increase production beyond the 15,000-barrel limit, the rules would ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Tarboro Brewing Company getting ready to open second location
Tarboro Brewing Company is getting into the taco business.

Owners Inez and Stephen Ribustello announced Wednesday that they will open a second location of their popular brewery at the Rocky Mount Mills Campus. TBC West, a new brewery and taco concept, will open March 10, WRAL.com reported on March 1.

“We have always believed success derives from being very intentional in our growth, sourcing our ingredients locally, supporting our community and developing partnerships with the best organizations possible,” Inez Ribustello said.

Tarboro Brewing Company's main taproom and brewing facility will remain in Tarboro alongside the couple's On the Square restaurant.

TBC West, located at 1121 Falls Road, will have a seasonally changing menu of artisan tacos and a rotating tap of beers made the main brewing facility in Tarboro. There will also be some small batch beers produced at the Rocky Mount Mills location.

"Coming to the Mills campus will allow us to experiment with new styles of beer and exchange ideas with the other brewers, students at the Nash Community College 360 Brewing and Distillation Program and a new audience coming to the Mills," Stephen Ribustello said.

Brewery news USA, CA: Coronado Brewing Company to open new facility in Imperial Beach
Coronado Brewing Company is excited to announce plans for a new facility in the country’s most southwesterly city, Imperial Beach, TheFullPint.com reported on March 2.

The project is part of Imperial Beach’s revitalization at Bikeway Village, and Coronado Brewing will be an anchor of the new development. The site plan consists of two 15,000 sq. ft. buildings, one of which will house Coronado Brewing and the other will be home to a local coffee shop, bike shop, and additional retail. Studio E Architects brought life to the formerly dilapidated space through a dramatic color-scheme, large-scale Alaskan cedar trellises, and corrugated metal.

“We’ve been wanting to open another location for some time, and we felt like the South Bay has been under-served by craft beer,” says Kasey Chapman, COO, Coronado Brewing Company. “Bikeway Village offers us a great location, with easy access to the freeway and the rest of the South Bay. The success of our current I.B. location has shown that the demand is there, and we’re looking forward to having a larger space for more people to experience the Coronado brand.”

Bikeway Village is located at 13th Street, with sweeping views of the estuary, San Diego Bay, downtown, and Coronado Bridge. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mariner Brewing aiming at becoming Coquitlam’s first craft brewery by July
In nautical terms, a mariner is a seaman who navigates a ship with a steady hand.

For Byron Vallis, it’s a perfect word as he charts unknown waters with his business partner and girlfriend, The Tri-City News reported on March 2.

Mariner is also a main drag Vallis knows well, having grown up at the top of Mariner Drive in Coquitlam — the city where he will open its first craft brewery.

It’s a dream the Dr. Charles Best secondary grad (class of 2009) has had for at least five years.

A home brewer, Vallis shared his vision with his employer, Wim Vander Zalm, a well-known Coquitlam businessman who owns Art Knapp Plantland in Port Coquitlam. Vander Zalm liked what he heard and, in 2015 when Coquitlam city council began to look at loosening its liquor policies to allow craft breweries and distilleries, the pair thought to tap into the ever-growing market locally.

They toured microbreweries in the U.S. and around Metro Vancouver, figuring out how they could put a unique spin on a growing business sector.

And last year, when council finally approved new rules after months of debate, their search began to find adequate space: big enough to house four tanks and other ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Westhampton Brewing Company to open at Gabreski Airport
A team of four entrepreneurs looking to open a brewery in Westhampton finally secured a location for their operation: a 4,700-square-foot space within the Hampton Business park at Francis S. Gabreski Airport, 27east.com reported on March 2.

Brian Sckipp, one of the founders of Westhampton Brewing Company, said he and his partners signed a letter of intent a couple of weeks ago with cousins Gregg and Mitchell Rechler, who own the space.

“We’ve had nothing but a good experience so far,” Mr. Sckipp, a former wine executive, said of working with the Rechlers.

The letter of intent, Mr. Sckipp explained, is one of the first steps in getting their brewing license with New York State. In about two to three months, Mr. Sckipp expects to be able to secure his temporary brewing license. A permanent license would be issued sometime after that.

Once the temporary license is issued, Mr. Sckipp and his co-founders—David DeTurris, Kate Tedesco and John Salvaggio—will be able to start brewing beer and, hopefully, begin having their product stocked in local stores. At that point, the Rechlers would also be able to start setting up a tasting room in the brewery, Mr. Sckipp said.

Brewery news China: Shanghai’s Boxing Cat craft brewer bought by AB InBev
AB InBev, the world's biggest beer brewer, has acquired a significant stake in one of China's best known craft brewers, in a move that shakes up the country's tiny but booming craft beer scene and, the slumping beer giant hopes, its own bottom line, Fortune reported on March 2.

The company's quarterly earnings announcement on March 2 disappointed investors, who sent the stock falling 3% after AB InBev missed analyst estimates for the seventh quarter in a row. The sluggish results provided further explanation for why AB InBev was willing to spend $103 billion to buy rival SABMiller and why it is pushing hard for growth in markets like China. AB InBev has also been investing in craft brands, buying nine U.S. craft brewers over the past six years.

Boxing Cat Brewery in Shanghai wasn't the city's first craft brewer when a trio of businessmen - one American, one Canadian, one Chinese - opened it in 2008. But it has survived to become the city's longest lasting. Last year it became the first Chinese microbrewery to win a medal at the World Beer Festival. Its beers share the pugilist theme of its brand name: There's a Ringside Red, Sucker Punch Pale ...More info on site

Brewery news Myanmar: Kirin hoping to tap into Myanmar beer market’s swift growth
Japanese brewer Kirin is hoping to tap into swift growth - and serious staying power - with its latest investment in Myanmar's fizzing beer market, a senior executive said on March 3, The Business Times reported.

Last month the beer giant took a controlling stake in Mandalay Brewery for US$4.3 million, topping off its more than half a billion investment in top producer Myanmar Brewery in 2015.

Myanmar Brewery deputy managing director Hideki Mitsuhashi predicted sales will grow in line with GDP at around 7 per cent a year.

In the long-run, he said Myanmar's drinkers can also knock it back for longer than their regional counterparts.

"Myanmar people are very, very strong for alcohol," he told AFP.

"We have a kit to measure resistance to drink... They are much stronger than Japanese and Chinese."

Myanmar beer consumption rates are currently among the lowest in Asia.

Drinkers chug down around three litres per head each year, according to Euromonitor, a fraction of the more than 40 litres drunk in neighbouring Vietnam or over 30 in Laos.

But the market has been brewing since a quasi-civilian government took over in 2011 and introduced a raft of economic reforms that have uncorked a market long stifled by military rule.

Brewery news UK: Heineken to enjoy short-term Brexit benefits in the on-trade
Heineken will enjoy the short-term Brexit benefits in the UK on-trade, trade marketing manager, Paul Gordon, was quoted as saying by Imbibe on March 2.

‘It has been an interesting 12 months, with the results of the referendum and the change that would bring,’ Gordon said. ‘Bizarrely what we have seen since is actually a pretty good set of results. We are seeing inflation staying quite low and production and manufacturing going up to the highest number in 17 years. We have seen unemployment go down and retail value go up.

‘In the short term it has been quite good but we also know behind that there is some other stuff round the corner. We know there is going to be an impact on inflation and the cost of goods if you are bringing things in from outside the UK. There could be an impact on living wage and availability of staff etc. So there is a lot of uncertainty still to come and we have yet to see the real impact of Brexit. It’s one to keep watching but it is one to enjoy the benefits of in the short term as well,’ he said at a Heineken briefing on March ...More info on site

Hops news South Africa: AB InBev commits to invest R610 mln in increasing hop production
AB InBev and SABMiller’s R610-million investment in the agricultural sector is set to turn South African Breweries Hop Farms (SABHF) into a net exporter and grow production by 250 tonnes annually, the Press Reader reported on March 2.

The global brewer announced on March 1 it was committed to investing R610 mln by 2021 in raising hop production, creating employment and upskilling workers by investing in research and development.

There are 424 hectares of hops under cultivation in the southern Cape.

SABHF and contracted private growers harvest less than 1% of the world’s production of 855 tonnes a year. Of this, about 735 tonnes are for SAB and the local craft beer industry, while 120 tonnes are exported to the rest of Africa, primarily for SAB beers.
