A CLOSE UP - HOP PARTICLES IN
DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
In dry hopping it is all about extracting the flavours
from the hop particles. German researchers
closely examined particle size during dry hopping, as
the process of pellet disintegration of very important.
Fast swelling hop pellets with small particle size
distribution are seen as ideal for dry hopping. Swelling
velocity was found to be both temperature and variety
independent. The researchers also found that the
swelling volume is higher in low alpha varieties. As
sedimentation of particles happens quickly, agitation
is suggested for better extraction. They also found the
lower particle size distribution of pellets is beneficial in
this context compared to the properties of hop powder
prior to pelletization. These insights should help to
make dry hopping more efficient!

USA, VA: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery launches pilot brewery in Charlottesville
|
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery has expanded beyond Richmond and into the Virginia foothills, HRGrowler reported on March 8.
The new Pilot Brewery & Taproom, located in Charlottesville, opened Feb. 18. Officials said the 3,600-square-foot space will serve as the brewery’s main hub for research and development.
Recipes are brewed and served on-site for customers to provide immediate feedback. Beers that prove popular at the Charlottesville location will be considered for wider production, especially once Hardywood’s Goochland brewery comes online.
“Our new Charlottesville innovation brewery marks the beginning of a new chapter for Hardywood,” said Eric McKay, Hardywood’s president and co-founder. “It creates the perfect opportunity for us to regularly release new pilot-batch brews, collaborations, and some tasty experiments.”
Lifelong friends McKay and Patrick Murtaugh opened Hardywood in Richmond in 2011. Five years later, it has become one of the most respected craft beer makers in the state, known for its thoughtfully innovative recipes and commitment to using local ingredients.
Hardywood beers have earned international acclaim with medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, as well as a rare 100 rating by BeerAdvocate Magazine for the brewery’s Gingerbread Stout.
The Charlottesville location features a 3.5-barrel Premier Stainless brewhouse, a system that will be

USA: Move underway to require sale of MillerCoors’ shuttered North Carolina brewery
|
A move is underway to require the sale of a shuttered MillerCoors brewery in Rockingham County as part of a merger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller, the Triad Business Journal reported on March 9.
The hope is that move would result in the reopening — and the hiring of hundreds of workers — at the former brewery in Eden.
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein and state Senate leader Phil Berger, an Eden resident, have written U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions asking him to require surviving entity Anheuser-Busch InBev to sell the brewery to a competitor as part of the approval of the merger. Representatives of then-N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper's office expressed similar views in a letter sent last year to the U.S. Department of Justice, arguing that requiring the sale of the brewery would be good for the competitiveness of the beer industry.
The Eden brewery has the capacity to brew more than 8.8 million barrels of beer per year, which proponents of its sale say accounts for about 4 percent of the nation’s annual beer production. The plant was closed last year, resulting in the loss of jobs for its 520 workers.
“We write the (U.S. Department of Justice) to take

USA, TX: Two Wheel Brewing opens as Buda’s first and only brewery
|
The founders of Two Wheel Brewing didn’t expect such a large turnout when it quietly opened for the first time on March 3 — but Buda residents, in the town just south of Austin, had been thirsting for a brewery of their own for a while and lined up out the door for a first taste of the beer, austin360 reported on March 9.
That instant enthusiasm is gratifying for Marc Woffenden, who co-founded the brewery with his wife, Alexis, after he decided to turn his homebrewing hobby into something more. So far, Two Wheel Brewing is only open on Friday evenings, but as the brewery gets up and running — and as more beers are added to the tap wall in the tasting room — those hours will expand.
Woffenden, an Austin resident since the early 1990s, loves Texas’ vibrant capital city but deliberately chose its smaller southern neighbor for the brewery.
“We wanted to go to a community where a brewery would be welcomed,” he said.
And welcomed it was: He didn’t need to do much persuading to get Buda’s city officials on board with Two Wheel Brewing during the early planning stages. In an initial meeting, he told them what he

USA, ME: D.L. Geary Brewing Co. changing ownership
|
D.L. Geary Brewing Co. is being sold to a Freeport businessman who has taken over the management of Portland’s first craft brewery and intends to complete the acquisition before the end of the year, the Press Herald reported on March 9.
Kelly Lucas, whose parents, David and Karen Geary, co-founded the brewery in 1983, identified the buyer as Alan Lapoint of Freeport.
Lucas, who had served as the company’s director of operations, said the sides reached terms on a management contract on March 8 that gives Lapoint immediate control of the company based on Evergreen Drive.
“The sale will take several months to complete,” said Lucas, adding that she was not at liberty to disclose the sale price.
Lucas said D.L. Geary was been struggling for a while with declining sales, brought on by a highly competitive market for craft brews. There are approximately 75 breweries in Maine, and that doesn’t include the pressure caused by out-of-state breweries that have made incursions into the state’s craft beer market.
Lucas’ mother died in 2013 and her father, David, who goes by D.L., is 72 years old.
“We just felt like we needed help and some high levels of energy that will re-invigorate the Geary’s brand,” Lucas said.

Australia: Barley exports exceed 1 mln for the first time in January this year
|
Suspicions of strong grain exports were confirmed in last week’s monthly exports data, which showed record large wheat and barley shipments from Australia in January as last year’s massive grain harvest flows into overseas markets, Queensland Country Life reported on March 10.
ABS said that 2.5 million tonnes of wheat exported from Australia in January and 1.0 million tonnes of feed barley. Total monthly shipments of wheat, barley and canola in January exceeded 4.0 million tonnes for the first time driven by strong export demand.
The strong record large exports will go some way towards stemming concerns of export bottlenecks. Record large wheat shipments from NSW showed the benefit of their two new export terminals.
More than a third of the wheat shipments went to India. Australia has shipped more than 1.3 million tonnes of wheat to India since the start of the 2016/17 season in October. Busy shipping line-ups for February and March suggest this pattern is set to continue for the next couple of months.
Australia’s monthly barley exports exceeded 1.0 million tonnes in January for the first time, and the back of strong demand from China and Saudi Arabia. China imported 561,000 tonnes of barley from Australia in January, according

South Korea: Hite-Jinro to slash workforce amid shrinking liquor market
|
South Korea’s Hite-Jinro will slash its workforce as part of cost-cutting to deal with the country's rapidly shrinking liquor market, the Korea Times reported on March 10.
But Oriental Brewery (OB) and Lotte Chilsung said they will not do the same. The two said they will launch aggressive marketing plans and introduce products to increase market share, and seek more business opportunities abroad.
On March 9, Hite-Jinro, whose flagship brands include Hite beer and Chamisul soju, started receiving applications from its 3,200 employees for voluntary retirement, the first since 2012 when about 100 workers were let go under the scheme.
The company also plans to take another 100 employees off its payroll.
Those who have worked more than 20 years will be given compensation of up to 30 months of wages, in addition to severance pay. Those quitting can also apply for low-interest loans and receive free consulting if they want to start their own businesses.
"As a pre-emptive measure to more effectively cope with Korea's declining beer and soju markets, we decided to carry out the voluntary retirement program," a Hite-Jinro official said. "The plan also aims to offer our employees opportunities for fresh starts. It is a win-win solution for everyone."

UK: Special business rates protection for pubs announced in the final Spring budget statement
|
UK Chancellor Philip Hammond has announced special business rates protection for pubs in England in the final Spring budget statement, Imbibe reported on March 8.
The measures will see all pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000 receive a £1,000 discount on their 2017 bill. The move is estimated to cover 90% of pubs in England.
In the afternoon on March 8, Hammond made further business rates concessions as what he called a ‘reaction to concerns raised by businesses’. Local authorities are to receive a £300 mln fund to deliver discretionary relief to help ease the burden on individual hard cases. Furthermore, any business coming out of Small Business Rate Relief will benefit from an additional cap, that will mean their rates will not increase by more than £50 a month.
Reacting to the news, Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) chief executive Kate Nicholls welcomed the news but said that long term reform was still needed to protect the sector.
‘It is very encouraging to see the government acknowledge and back the valuable work being carried out by the UK’s hardworking pubs, bars and restaurants,’ she said. ‘Sector-specific relief will help those businesses hardest hit by the revaluation. This much-needed government

USA: Case and dollar sales of imported beers increase last year
|
There has never been a better time for Federbräu’s in the Thai market with the premium beer segment witnessing brighter opportunities than ever, the Nation reported on March 10.
Edmond Neo Kim Soon, CEO Beer product group, pointed out that a recent research work on premium products consumption in Southeast Asia conducted by international research company AC Nielsen shows that Southeast Asian consumers are now likely to spend more on consumer products, particularly in the premium food and beverage segment. The research ranked Indonesia first in the region for this trend, while Thailand came second with a 24 percent increase in consumption of premium foods and beverages last year. The increase is partly because consumers today are willing to pay more for better products.
Although sales in the Thai premium beer segment currently represent only 5 percent of the entire beer market, considered a small proportion compared to other markets, the research findings clearly reflect the growth trend. Thailand has steadily seen an emergence of new imported premium beer brands. With a total economic value of Bt7.2 billion, Edmond believes Federbräu could succeed in penetrating the Thai premium beer market.
“We decided to introduce Federbräu to the Thai premium beer market as we
