REAL THIOLS ARE NOT ALL HANGING OUT WITH CYSTEINE

ABSTRACT
A couple of studies in the recent past point towards the importance of sulfur components contributing to grapefruit, passion fruit and sauvignon type flavours. It was thought that these thiols are released from cysteinylated structures. However a Belgium research group discovered that when producing dry hopped beers with single hop varieties (Amarillo, Hallertau Blanc and Mosaic), the yield of 3M4MP (grapefruit-like flavour) was much higher than expected. As evidenced in grapes these thiols can also come from S-glutathione precursors and this research group was able to prove the occurrence of S-3-(1-hydroxyhexyl) gluatthion and S-3-(4-methyl-1-hydroxpentyl) glutathione in hops at levels well above those reported for their cysteinylated counterparts. For the release of cysteine conjugates the beta-lyase can be responsible and the mechanism behind the cleavage of S-glutathione precursors yet has to be discovered. The potential to retrieve fruity aromas from these structures seems to be a big factor for the metioned varieties.

Kankolgongo, M. et al: 3-Sulfanyl-4-methylpentan-1-ol in Dry-Hopped Beers: First Evidence of Glutathione S-Conjugates in Hop, J. Agric. Food Chem. 2016, 64, 8572-8582

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association releases Top 50 Breweries of 2016
The Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers—on March 15 released its annual lists of the top 50 craft and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were craft brewing companies.1 “With such a broad range of brewers in today’s beer landscape, the leading small and independent producers have helped build the craft brewing industry to what it is today,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Embracing their experience and ability to thrive and overcome challenges, the top producing craft brewers will continue to inspire, innovate and influence the future of beer.”

The top 5 craft breweries are D. G. Yuengling & Son, Inc, Boston Beer Co, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, New Belgium Brewing Co, and Gambrinus.

The top 5 overall breweries are Anheuser-Busch, Inc, MillerCoors, Pabst Brewing Co, D. G. Yuengling & Son, Inc, and North American Breweries.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries Ltd. to break Kenya’s 17-month drought of corporate-bond issuance
East African Breweries Ltd. plans to raise 6 billion shillings ($58.5 million) in a sale of five-year debt, breaking a 17-month drought of corporate-bond issuance in Kenya, Bloomberg reported on March 13.

The securities, the second and final portion of an 11 billion-shilling program, offer a fixed annual rate of 14.17 percent until maturity in March 2022, a 64 basis-point premium over the benchmark five-year government bond. The initial offer attracted 12.25 percent.

“The second and final domestic medium-term note will seek to provide EABL an opportunity to match its borrowings with its medium-to-long-term capex and working capital investment aimed at building capacity and optimizing operations within the brewhouse and packaging,” Dorcas Ngure, head of communications at EABL, said an emailed response to questions.

The issue is the first corporate bond since the collapse of Imperial Bank Ltd. in October 2015. The lender was placed under statutory management on the same day its 2 billion-shilling bond was scheduled to begin trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. That was followed by the bourse in April 2016 suspending trade Chase Bank Kenya Ltd.’s corporate bonds after the central bank put the lender under receivership.

The EABL offer may attract investor interest because there are few available ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coca-Cola Amatil creates a team of experts to build its long-term beer and cider growth strategy
Coca-Cola Amatil’s team of specialist experts hit the ground this week to build the foundations of the company’s long-term beer and cider growth strategy, the Beer and Brewer reported on March 15.

The Beer and Cider Exchange team consists of 14 specialist beer and cider merchants who will provide expert support to the trade and Amatil’s state sales teams.

As part of a long-term partnership between Amatil and Molson Coors International, the team will work closely with the Molson Coors range (including Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Chill, Coors and Blue Moon), as well as Amatil brand partners Australian Beer Company (Yenda craft beer and Pressman’s cider), the Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams and Angry Orchard cider), and Chili Marketing (Rekorderlig cider).

Coca-Cola Amatil says that following the addition of the Miller brands to its premium beer portfolio late last year, they’ve leveraged their relationship with Molson Coors International to develop a bespoke premium beer and cider strategy for the Australian market.

This strategy will be modelled on the successful Tenth and Blake Beer Company, the craft and import division of the US-based MillerCoors.

Heading up the creation and appointment of the team was Amatil’s Director of Beer and Cider Judd Michel.

Brewery news Japan: Japan’s top 4 brewers considering joint deliveries in Hokkaido
Four major Japanese brewers are considering starting joint deliveries of their alcoholic products in Hokkaido possibly by the end of this year in an effort to cut distribution costs, according to sources close to the matter, the Japan Today reported on March 15.

Asahi Breweries Ltd, Kirin Brewery Co, Suntory Beer Ltd and Sapporo Breweries Ltd are planning to set up a distribution base in Sapporo, the capital of Japan’s northernmost prefecture, from which their products would be transported to wholesalers across Hokkaido.

All except Suntory Beer operate plants in Hokkaido.

Joint delivery would also benefit wholesalers because they will be able to receive products from the four companies all at once.

Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery and Sapporo Breweries are already distributing products together in Tokyo, while Asahi Breweries and Kirin Brewery started joint transportation of their products by train to the Hokuriku region in central Japan from their plants in the Kansai area in the west in January.

Akiyoshi Koji, president of Asahi Group Holdings Ltd, the holding company of Asahi Breweries, indicated in December that it is important to strengthen competitiveness while promoting cooperation in order to boost the industry’s profitability.

Brewery news EU: Alcohol companies invited to propose their own labelling guidelines
The drinks industry has hailed a move by the European Commission to allow alcohol companies to propose their own labelling guidelines.

The EC said on March 13 that it has decided to invite the industry to develop, within a year, "a self-regulatory proposal aiming to provide information on ingredients and nutrition of all alcoholic beverages". The EC announced the decision after adopting the findings of a report to the European Parliament and the Council that examined mandatory labelling in the drinks industry.

The move was welcomed by several major drinks companies and trade organisations. Diageo said: "The report opens the way to greater collaboration between industry and European institutions. The report also makes it clear that companies are a necessary voice to create appropriate solutions to providing clear and useful information about alcohol to people, based on their needs."

The Johnnie Walker owner highlighted its existing policy on listing nutritional information, Diageo Consumer Information Standards, which launched last year.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Carlsberg said the EC is "kicking at an open door". The brewer said that 83% of its beers worldwide already carry on-pack ingredient information.

"Beer is made from good quality, natural ingredients... [which is] why Carlsberg launched this long ago," the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken offers new variant of its tequila-flavoured Desperados beer
Heineken has launched a new variant of its tequila-flavoured beer, Desperados, aimed at drawing in younger, late-night drinkers, The Morning Advertiser reported.

The new variant, Desperados ‘Dos’, is flavoured with light and dark Tequila and has a higher ABV of 7% and reduced carbonation.

It will be available across the on-trade in 250ml bottles – a smaller serve than its predecessor.

Heineken premium brand director David Lette said: “Drinking habits among the Desperados target audience are evolving, with many now looking for more sophisticated options as they make the transition from early evening into the night.

“As these ‘shift’ occasions become increasingly important to young adults, so does the need for our customers in the on-trade to develop an offering that is relevant to these consumers and provides them with the excitement they’re looking for on a night out.

“[The beer’s] flavour profile brings an element of taste experimentation, its 7% ABV places it alongside spirit mixers and its serve size helps consumers to see it differently from beer, instead seeing it as a drink that they can enjoy as they shift into the night occasion.”

This is the latest in a series of new product announcements from Heineken, which is in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: “Totalitarian symbols” ban could hit Heineken in Hungary
Hungarian lawmakers of the governing Fidesz-KDNP submitted a bill to Parliament that would ban the use of what it calls “totalitarian symbols” for commercial purposes, according to reports. Local media has speculated this could hit Heineken, which uses a red star symbol, although the firm declines to comment for now, the Budapest Business Journal reported on March 14.

Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén and János Lázár submitted the bill. In its justification, the two MPs say that allowing the use of the symbols gives them “a kind of legitimacy”, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Under the bill symbols such as the swastika, the arrow cross, the sickle and hammer and the red star would be banned for commercial use 30 days after it is approved by Parliament. Violating the ban after January 1, 2018 would constitute a criminal offence.

Hungarian media immediately identified Heineken as a brand that could possibly be hurt by the ban. However, the brand has not taken a public stance in the matter yet. “For the moment we are not in the position to comment on any of the below points,” Heineken Hungary told the Budapest Business Journal.

According to the brewer’s Heineken Collection Foundation website, established to promote and ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken UK to launch non-alcoholic version of its flagship lager
Heineken UK is launching a new, non-alcoholic version of its flagship lager, The Morning Advertiser reported.

Heineken 0.0 will be available in 330ml bottles across the on-trade from this month onwards, accompanied by a £2.5 mln marketing push. Each bottle contains 69 calories.

Heineken premium brands director David Lette said: “Initial feedback from both consumers and customers has been overwhelmingly positive, with a strong preference shown towards Heineken 0.0 versus other alcohol-free beers.”

“With a high purchase intent, Heineken 0.0 will not only drive frequency with current beer drinkers, but also bring new drinkers to the category by attracting health-conscious younger consumers who are drinking less or abstaining altogether, by delivering a great tasting beer from a brand that they’re proud to be seen with,” he added.

This makes Heineken the latest brewer to stake a claim on the burgeoning low and non-alcoholic beer market, after AB InBev announced last year it would expand its alcohol-free range and work to ensure 20% of its sales come from the category by 2020.

Lette cited research by the company that claimed only 47% of customers were currently satisfied with the range of low and non-alcoholic beers available. Additionally, 50% of consumers were now actively ...More info on site
