REAL THIOLS ARE NOT ALL
HANGING OUT WITH CYSTEINE
ABSTRACT
A couple of studies in the recent past point towards
the importance of sulfur components contributing to
grapefruit, passion fruit and sauvignon type flavours.
It was thought that these thiols are released from
cysteinylated structures. However a Belgium research
group discovered that when producing dry hopped
beers with single hop varieties (Amarillo, Hallertau
Blanc and Mosaic), the yield of 3M4MP (grapefruit-like
flavour) was much higher than expected. As evidenced
in grapes these thiols can also come from S-glutathione
precursors and this research group was able to prove
the occurrence of S-3-(1-hydroxyhexyl) gluatthion and
S-3-(4-methyl-1-hydroxpentyl) glutathione in hops at
levels well above those reported for their cysteinylated
counterparts. For the release of cysteine conjugates
the beta-lyase can be responsible and the mechanism
behind the cleavage of S-glutathione precursors yet has
to be discovered. The potential to retrieve fruity aromas
from these structures seems to be a big factor for the
metioned varieties.

USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports Q4 and full-year 2016 results
|
After delaying its official 2016 earnings release by nearly three weeks, Craft Brew Alliance on March 16 issued fourth-quarter and full-year 2016 results, reporting a portfolio-wide shipment decline of 6 percent despite continued growth for the company’s Kona Brewing brand.
Kona shipments increased 13 percent in 2016 while depletions grew 17 percent, but significant declines across the Widmer and Redhook brands resulted in overall “flat” depletion trends in 2016.
CBA shipped a total of 748,900 barrels last year, down nearly 5 percent compared to 2015, according to an SEC filing.
In 2016, Redhook shipments plummeted 31.6 percent, to 127,200 barrels, while Widmer shipments fell 15.7 percent, to 148,1000 barrels, according to the filing. In the last two years alone, shipments of Widmer and Redhook products have shrunk by 136,000 barrels.
Meanwhile, shipments of the company’s gluten-reduced Omission Beer declined 16.7 percent, to 42,900 barrels, last year.
Net sales of $202 million in 2016 marked a decrease of 1 percent from the prior year.
During the fourth quarter, Kona depletions increased by 12 percent, outpacing trends in the craft beer marketplace. However, CBA’s overall depletions declined 3 percent year over year.
CBA attributed a 13 percent shipment decline in the fourth quarter to a reduction in wholesaler inventories

USA, IN: Grand Junction Brewing Company hosting grand opening of its new brewery on March 17
|
Westfield-based Grand Junction Brewing Company is hosting a grand opening of its new production facility at 1189 E. 181st St., west of U.S. 31 and just south of Grand Park Sports Campus on March 17, NUVO Newsweekly reported.
Co-owner Jon Knight said the 10,000-square-foot production facility and tap room was designed to have an industrial vibe to it, while being Monon Trail user, kid and dog friendly. Free water stations will be available along with Grand Junction’s regular and seasonal lineup of beers.
The original Grand Junction brewpub at the corner of Main and Union streets features a full in-house restaurant in an historic 1800s building and was designed to be a community gathering place. In contrast, the built from the ground up Production facility was designed to serve visitors to Grand Park with a choice from food trucks. The Production facility has a large parking space and an outdoor patio for patrons to enjoy Grand Junction pints with food truck offerings.
Partners Jon Knight and Charlie Wood opened Grand Junction in downtown Westfield in April 2014. Almost immediately they felt “pinched for space” and began plans for an off-site production facility initially to increase production from 672 barrels per

USA, CO: Increasing rent forces Pateros Creek Brewing to close down on April 1
|
A remodel project in Old Town Fort Collins is driving rent up and Pateros Creek Brewing out, the Coloradoan reported on March 16.
The craft brewer, which has operated at 242 N. College Ave. since 2010, announced it will close April 1.
“The new lease is just something we can’t afford,” said Pateros Creek co-founder Steve Jones. “We had been talking with the developer to see how we fit in their plans.”
The $9 million renovation project on the block will create a new plaza featuring Mexican restaurant Rosa Mexicano, a Churn ice cream kiosk and 10 shipping containers that will be repurposed and modified into smaller tenant spaces.
Pateros Creek will host a going-away party from noon to 7 p.m. April 1, its last day open to the public. The brewery must vacate the space by April 15.
The brewery will sell its equipment, but Jones wouldn’t rule out reopening at another site. He’s also exploring contract brewing in the area, where another brewery would produce Pateros Creek beer.
“I’m not letting the dream die just yet,” Jones said.
Whatever comes, Jones said the brewery will likely take a multi-month hiatus. Pateros Creek has dwindled its supply and its distribution down to about 10 accounts in

The Czech Republic: Budvar reports record beer output in 2016
|
Production of Budvar beer, which has been embroiled in a lengthy legal dispute with U.S. giant Anheuser-Busch over the use of the "Budweiser" brand, reached a record in 2016, ABC News reported on March 17.
Budejovicky Budvar NP, a Czech state-owned brewery, said its output rose 0.8 percent to 1.615 million hectolitres (42.66 million gallons) of beer, the highest volume in its 120-year history. It did not disclose exact export figures but said it sells about 60 percent of its production abroad.
The brewery says it's been close to reaching its production capacity since 2015 and is investing 2 billion Czech crowns ($79.5 million) to expand output to up to 2 million hectolitres a year.

Venezuela: Empresas Polar resisting government attacks
|
When Lorenzo Mendoza attends baseball games, crowds treat him like a star player. Baseball is Venezuela’s national sport and Mendoza, head of the Caracas-based food and drink producer Empresas Polar and once an avid amateur player, remains a big follower. His company sponsors several of the country’s leading teams, the Financial Times reported on March 17.
Venezuela is wrestling with its worst social, political, and economic crisis in living memory, however, and his sporting passion is not the main reason why the fans have greeted him with cheers and chants of support. Not only does his company stand out as a rare case of Venezuelan business resilience at a desperate time, but Mendoza himself has become a symbol of resistance.
Many would like to see him swap Empresas Polar’s presidential seat for that at the head of Venezuela’s government, replacing the unpopular President Nicolás Maduro. “I don’t go so often to stadiums any more,” states Mendoza with a hint of caution. Everything has become too politicised in Venezuela, he adds, “and I have to take care. I have lots of families depending on me.”
Polar employs 30,000 people and is the most successful brand in Venezuela. Its eponymous brewery, founded in 1941, has

Australia: Craft brewers demanding fairer tax deal from the Federal Government
|
Australia's booming craft beer industry is demanding a fairer deal from the Federal Government, saying the current tax regime is holding it back, ABC Online reported on March 17.
The number of craft breweries has more than doubled in the past five years to over 400 nationwide.
Despite standing out as a bright spot in the flailing manufacturing sector, craft brewers say they are being hurt by Australia's two-tier beer tax regime.
"It's just crazy, it's outdated, it's from another era," Willie the Boatman brewery co-owner Pat McInerney said.
The tax office slugs brewers based on how much pure alcohol is in their beer.
Pure alcohol is taxed at about A$34 a litre if full-strength beer is sold in a 50 litre keg.
The identical beer in smaller packaging, such as bottles or more compact kegs, attracts an excise of A$49 per litre.
Boutique breweries say they want to supply restaurants and bars with smaller kegs, providing fresher beer and allowing venues to rotate their selection, but say the discrepancy makes it uneconomical.
"The fact that we are unable to sell a 30 litre keg at the same tax rate as a 50 litre keg is ridiculous," Mr McInerney said.
Willie the Boatman began in 2012 after Mr McInerney

Switzerland & Germany: Ameropa AG to end its involvement in malting barley trading
|
Swiss-based grain trading group Ameropa AG said on March 16 it will end its involvement in malting barley trading and close its Hamburg-based malting barley trading house Interbrau GmbH at the end of 2017, the Country Guide reported.
“This decision is mainly driven by the fact that the malting barley market did not develop as Ameropa had expected and there are too little commonalities between the malting barley trade and Ameropa’s core business,” Ameropa said in a statement.
Ameropa said its core business consisted of trading fertilizers, wheat, corn and oilseeds.
“These are areas where Ameropa identified significant growth potential on which Ameropa would like to focus,” Ameropa said. “Interbrau therefore will stop its trading activities by the end of 2017.”
All existing contracts will be honoured and that the 2016 harvest program will be executed as planned, it added.
Hamburg-based Interbrau deals with producers in Europe’s most important barley-growing countries including Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic as well as worldwide with companies in Latin America, Australia and Canada, Interbrau’s website says.
Interbrau GmbH, formed in Hamburg in 1961, has been a subsidiary of Ameropa since July 2009, the website says.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria applies for ($130 million share sale approval
|
Guinness Nigeria said on March 15 it had applied to the Nigerian Stock Exchange to get approval for a share sale to raise 39.7 billion naira ($130 million), its chief executive told Reuters.
The company, the local division of the world's leading spirit maker Diageo, said it would issue the shares to existing shareholders at 58 naira each, a 21 percent discount to March 15th’s market price. Shareholders would be offered five new shares for every 11 held.
The company, which is 54 percent owned by Diageo, reported in September last year a pretax loss of 2.35 billion naira for the year ended June 30, its first annual loss in 30 years, triggering the share sale.
Shareholders approved the sale in January.
"Our expectation is that this rights issue will help mitigate the impact of increasing finance costs, optimise our balance sheet and improve the company's financial flexibility," Peter Ndegwa, chief executive Guinness Nigeria, said.
"We expect that this issue will help us ... return the company to profitability in the long term," he told Reuters
Guinness Nigeria shares, which have fallen 18 percent so far this year, rose 2.9 percent to 70 naira on the Lagos bourse on March 15. The stock fell 31 percent

India: United Breweries asked by court to come up with deposit offer
|
Hearing an appeal filed by the United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd (UBHL), the high court on March 15 asked the company to come up with a deposit offer, and adjourned the hearing to March 22, The Times of India reported.
The bench suggested that the appellant and the consortium of banks could hold talks and arrive at a settlement. Following a single bench order on February 7, 2017 di recting initiation of proceedings to recover the loan (Rs 6,000 crore plus interest) the defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd owed to the consortium, UBHL filed an original side appeal (OSA). UBHL's lawyer informed the HC that a deposit of Rs 1,280 crore had been made in the wake of the interim orders. The appellants added that were ready to settle the issue.
Counsel for the banks said the total amount that was due was Rs 10,000 crore. The banks said besides Vijay Mallya's tweet, nothing visible had been forthcoming from the appellants. But they expressed readiness for a one-time settlement.

Indonesia: Indonesia’s only craft brewer tapping into demand for better quality beer
|
Defying an escalating anti-alcohol movement and conservative bureaucrats in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesia's only craft brewer is tapping into demand for better quality booze among the country's small number of drinkers, Netralnews reported on March 16.
Despite the fact that about 90% of Indonesia's population is Muslim, and in theory banned from drinking, most practise a moderate form of Islam and alcohol is available in cities and holiday destinations, with local brewers producing mostly Pilsner lagers.
Unimpressed by the generic, mass-produced drinks on offer, local businessman Bona Budhisurya and his brother-in-law Jacob Suryanata decided to come up with an alternative, and in 2011 introduced Stark craft beer with a wheat and dark wheat variety.
"We had been abroad and drank a lot of good quality beer," said Budhisurya, a member of Indonesia's Christian and ethnic Chinese minorities, adding that on his return to Indonesia he found that "there was no quality beer here".
By producing such brews - generally defined as beverages created in small, independent breweries - they have made Indonesia an unlikely new addition to the global craft beer revolution.
The trend has seen micro-breweries spring up worldwide as consumers sick of flat, flavourless ales and gassy lagers seek out

Russia: Baltika Breweries expands capacity for production of non-alcoholic beer
|
Russia-based Baltika Breweries, part of the Carlsberg Group, has expanded its capacity for production of non-alcoholic beer, the Drinks Business Review reported on March 16.
The company increased the number of sites where innovative non-alcoholic brewery equipment is installed.
Baltika-Samara brewery became the fourth brewery where the first edition of non-alcoholic beer Baltika 0 was produced.
Baltika said in the recent years there has been a significant growth in the non-alcoholic beer industry in Russia.
Non-alcoholic beer segment witnessed a growth of 12% in the country, while the total beer market saw a decline between 1-2%.
To cater to the increasing demand for the segment, Baltika has invested in the equipment and is poised in bringing an alcohol-free beer to the market at an affordable price.
Baltika Breweries Marketing vice president Maxim Lazarenko said: "Recently we noted strengthening trend of growth of alcohol-free beer category in our country. And this is to be expected: in Russia, the segment takes no more than 1% of market, while in Germany it amounts to 5% and to 15% in Spain.
“With the development of beer consumption culture, the structure of Russians preferences is also gradually approaching the common European one. Therefore, we made a decision to extend the geography of
