4 MMP TO BOOST YOUR FLAVOUR
ABSTRACT
The research teams surrounding Kiyoshi Takoi have
been working on hop aroma questions for years. They
have been able to show that the coexistence of linalool,
geraniol and beta-citronellol boosts the citrus flavour
impressions in beer. In current work, these researchers
show specifically how the geraniol content in beers can
be significantly increased by using hop varieties rich
in geraniol, e.g. Mosaic, Bravo or Citra. Relatively low
amounts of these hops can increase the geraniol and
citronellol content up to 15 to 20mg/L. They also found
that there can be additive effects among 4MMP thiol
(black currant flavour), linalool and geraniol. Only 1,2
ng/L of 4 MMP was enough for this effect.

Geraniol-rich Hop and New Hypothesis of Synergy among Hop-derived Flavour compounds,

Canada: Number of licenced breweries more than doubles between 2010 and 2015
|
Canada’s craft beer industry is developing rapidly, with the number of licensed breweries having more than doubled from 310 to 644 between 2010 and 2015, according to the latest statistics from industry association Beer Canada.
On an annual basis, Canadians drink more than 22,700,000 hectolitres of beer - enough to fill at least 900 Olympic-size swimming pools.
On average, Canadians’ annual per capita consumption of beer is about 79 litres. At the provincial level, it’s highest in Newfoundland and Labrador at about 95 litres, followed by Quebec and Alberta at around 88 and 84 litres, respectively. Yukon boasts the largest annual per capita consumption of beer - about 128 litres, equivalent to 374 bottles per year.
When it comes to annual per capita consumption of beer internationally, Canadians rank 25th in the world, just behind New Zealand and the U.K. But it’s a far cry from No. 1 ranked Czech Republic, which has an annual per capita consumption rate of 140 litres.
On average, 99 per cent of beer bottles sold in Canada are returned. Retail prices for beer in Canada increased 4.9 per cent in 2015, while spirits rose by 0.9 per cent and wine bubbled up 0.6 per cent.

India: United Breweries Holding Ltd. to propose one-time settlement offer to banks in winding-up petition
|
United Breweries Holding Ltd. (UBHL) the parent company of UB Group, will propose a one-time settlement offer to the State Bank of India (SBI)-led lenders’ consortium before the Karnataka High Court, a company official told BloombergQuint on the condition of anonymity. It has, however, sought time to make the offer, the person added.
Last week, the high court had directed UBHL to come up with an offer to settle the matter with the consortium and adjourned the matter till April 4.
On March 7, the UB Group had filed an appeal challenging a February 8 order passed by a single bench, which had directed winding up of UBHL to recover dues payable by the company-promoted, defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.
The creditors, including BNP Paribas, the lead petitioner, State Bank of India (SBI) and aircraft lessors and engine makers such as Rolls-Royce and IAE International Aero Engines AG had moved the court to recover dues worth Rs 146 crore.
Vijay Mallya owns 52.34 percent stake in UBHL.
Earlier the Debt Recovery Tribunal had also ordered the SBI-led consortium of banks to start the process of recovering over Rs 6,203 crore, at 11.5 percent annual interest rate, from the embattled tycoon and his companies in another Kingfisher

Australia & China: Australian craft brewers exploring China market opportunities
|
A two-week, four-city export roadshow through China is the sort of business trip that exhausts most entrepreneurs. But for a group of craft brewers who were recently on the Australian craft beer roadshow in China, it was a glimpse of a big future market, The Australian Financial Review reported on March 21.
"I'm tired but really excited," says general manager of Moon Dog Brewing, Josh Uljans, who spoke to The Australian Financial Review on the morning he arrived back from China. "There is so much happening in China and so much interest in Australian food and beverage."
Uljans co-founded Moon Dog Brewing six years ago as a craft brewery and tap room for tastings, in Melbourne. But like many craft brewers that do very well in their niche, the niche has grown and growth has meant sales into the big and growing Asian beer markets.
In 2015, according to Euromonitor, 25 billion litres of beer was consumed in China alone, which was twice the beer consumed in the United States. In 2014, according to the Kirin company's research, China had 23.7 per cent of global share of beer consumption, compared to the US on 12.8 per cent.
Moon Dog produces around 1 million litres

UK: Britain's largest supermarket scraps more than half of Heineken range in response to brewer’s plan to hike prices
|
Tesco has scrapped more than half of its Heineken beer and cider range, after the brewing giant unveiled plans to hike prices in response to the pound's decline following the Brexit vote, the International Business Times reported on March 22.
According to the Times, Britain's largest supermarket has reduced the number of Heineken products on its shelves from 53 at the start of the year to 22. Tiger, Amstel, Sol and Kingfisher are among the beers to have disappeared from Tesco's stores.
A spokesman for the company was quoted as saying the decision was motivated by the intent to better match the range of beers and ciders to customers' needs.
In January, Heineken said it would raise prices by an average of 6p per pint, blaming its decision on "prevailing economic conditions", chief among them being sterling's 16% drop in the months following Britain's vote in favour of leaving the European Union.
A weaker pound makes imports more expensive and even though the majority of beers brewed in Britain are made with home-grown ingredients, brewers have been hit by higher transport and energy costs.
It is not the first time Tesco and one of its major suppliers has become embroiled in a price row.
In October

Ethiopia: Diageo to reintroduce Guinness in Ethiopia
|
Diageo Ethiopia is going to reintroduce the world renowned stout beer Guinness Beer, to the Ethiopian market. The debut is scheduled for March 31, 2017 during an event dubbed “Feshta”, 2merkato reported on March 20.
Guinness is going to be produced at Diageo’s expanded plant in Sebeta Town, Oromia State. By its new product, the beer manufacturer is aiming to attract affluent and emerging middle class and the diplomatic corps. It is also going to start with a limited production and sell the stout beer at a higher price than the average beer in the Ethiopian market.
Since purchasing Meta Abo Brewery from the government for 225 million USD in 2012, Diageo has been expanding its capacities. It currently supplies Meta Beer, Azmera Beer and Malta. This makes Guinness the third brand Diageo introduced to the market in the past half a decade time. Few years back, Diageo introduced Zemen Beer, which failed to attract customers and folded production after a while.
Guinness was first introduced to the Ethiopian market 15 years ago by BGI Brewery. Nevertheless, the product was not a success even with the repeated efforts. Diageo, via a project it called “The Injera Project”, conducted a research on the Ethiopian

USA: Hop stocks up for the second year in a row
|
For the second year in a row, U.S. hop stocks were up in March over a year ago, a further indicator that supply has caught up with demand, Capital Press reported.
U.S. hop growers, dealers and brewers had 140 million pounds on hand March 1 compared to 128 million a year earlier for an increase of 9 percent, according to a March 17 report by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Stocks held by growers and dealers totaled 105 million pounds while brewers held 35 million pounds. A year ago, growers and dealers held 88 million pounds and brewers held 40 million pounds.
In March 2016, stocks were up 10 percent over March 2015, when they were down 2 percent from March 2014. In September 2016, pre-harvest stocks were up 2 percent from the year before and the September before they were down 8 percent.
All of that shows the hump has been crossed from undersupply to oversupply, sources say.
“In some varieties there will be pretty substantial carryover,” said Ann George, executive director of Hop Growers of America and the Washington Hop Commission in Moxee, near Yakima.
A few specialty varieties still may be undersupplied, she said.
“The main thing is we’re going into a period of
