...AND ADD JUST A HINT OF 4 MMP TO BOOST YOUR FLAVOUR

ABSTRACT
The research teams surrounding Kiyoshi Takoi have been working on hop aroma questions for years. They have been able to show that the coexistence of linalool, geraniol and beta-citronellol boosts the citrus flavour impressions in beer. In current work, these researchers show specifically how the geraniol content in beers can be significantly increased by using hop varieties rich in geraniol, e.g. Mosaic, Bravo or Citra. Relatively low amounts of these hops can increase the geraniol and citronellol content up to 15 to 20mg/L. They also found that there can be additive effects among 4MMP thiol (black currant flavour), linalool and geraniol. Only 1,2 ng/L of 4 MMP was enough for this effect.

Brewery news USA: Beer sales up 0.3% last year, imports account for 18.9% of total sales
U.S. beer sales in 2016 were 207.3 mln hl, up 0.3% from the previous year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in March.

Beer imports were 39.2 mln hl, up 6.8%, for a market share of 18.9%. Imports from Mexico alone were 25.8 mln hl, 13.8% of the total U.S. beer sales.

Craft beer is estimated to have sold 30.2 mln hl, up 7%, for a market share of 14.6%, the analysts said.

Brewery news Canada: Government ties hikes in beer excises to the Consumer Price Index
Beer drinkers in Canada are going to pay more to slake their thirst every year going forward now that the federal government has tied hikes in the excise tax for beer to the Consumer Price Index, The Chronicle Herald reported on March 23.

In the federal budget announced on March 22, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government slapped a two-per-cent hike on the excise tax for beer, wine and liquor.

That alone is likely going to hike the cost of a case of 24 beers by about a nickel. But industry insiders say the federal government’s decision to tie future excise tax increases on beer to the Consumer Price Index, starting April 1 next year, will mean the cost of a case of beer will keep going up every year.

“It’ll be passed right on to consumers,” Matthew Stewart, an associate director with the Conference Board of Canada, said in an interview on March 23. “The consumer will pay in the form of higher beer prices.”

At Nova Scotia’s largest brewer, Oland Brewery, the financial blow of this year’s two-per-cent excise tax increase on beer is likely to be about C$375,000 per year. The brewer cranks out the equivalent of 15 million cases of a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev’s Golden Road Brewing to build new brewery in Northern Carolina
AB InBev’s Golden Road Brewing, one of formerly craft-beer brands that AB InBev gobbled up in the summer of 2015, is coming to North Oakland, NC, The East Bay Express reported on March 24.

Permits filed with the city of Oakland this month show that Golden Road is planning to open a 7,000-square-foot brewery and beer garden in North Oakland, which will take up three lots on 40th Street between Broadway and Manila Avenue.

According to this application with the Planning and Zoning Division, Golden Road intends to brew on site, serve food, and also feature an outdoor beer garden with fire pits. The entire structure will be constructed out of shipping containers.

There are several locally owned breweries within a mile of the proposed Golden Road site, including newly opened Temescal Brewing and Drakes Dealership.

The AB InBev incursion into Oakland isn't its first announced foray into Northern California. Last year, the corporation released plans to open a similar Golden Road beer garden in Sacramento's Midtown neighborhood. AB InBev also purchased Oakland-based Horizon Beverage Company, a distribution outfit, in 2015.

Last year, Tom McCormick, head of statewide advocacy group the California Craft Brewers Association, said the No. 1 threat to the thriving craft-beer industry ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Fury Brewing Co. to hold its grand opening on March 24
Another new regional brewery, and the third one in the Westmoreland County township of North Huntingdon, holds its grand opening this weekend with several brews with interesting names, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on March 22.

Fury Brewing Co.’s Nuts of Fury is a brown ale that has notes of nuts in its flavor. Sid's 1K is an India pale ale that honors Sidney Crosby scoring his 1,000th point this season. Carson Street Kolsch is “the perfect light and refreshing beer on a hot summer day.”

Other opening brews include a B.I.G., strong bitter named Notorious ESB, a stout named Stealth, and an Irish-style red ale called Craic, which is an Irish term for fun and enjoyment.

While some new breweries specialize in a certain style or styles of brews, Fury aims to offer something for everybody in a welcoming tap room it has created from a shell of a storefront on Route 30.

“We pretty much are going to go against the grain,” says Tom Jenkins, the president and director of operations in the new business that he runs with his vice president — and best friend — Stephan Hoffer and their friend Ryan Slicker. Mr. Slicker is the head brewer, but the other ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: The Door County Brewing Company building a new facility
Baileys Harbor’s Door County Brewing Company is building a new facility to house the brewery and taproom planned to open in late spring or early summer, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on March 21.

The new building is on the site of the former Fish Creek Moccasin Works shop and is in the heart of the town's commercial district along Wisconsin 57.

Brewery news USA, LA: Louisiana Purchase Brewing Company getting ready to open by April 7
In downtown Ponchatoula, Louisiana Purchase Brewing Company (128 W. Pine St., Ponchatoula) is nearing completion, and owners Andy and Lindsey Turcotte hope to open in time for the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival April 7-9, BestOfNewOrleans.com reported on March 21.

Louisiana Purchase will brew beer in its seven-barrel brewhouse, starting with 1803 Kolsch, a light, easy-drinking style. The taproom will have eight taps for its flagship beers and small batches brewed on a one-barrel pilot system.

“I think of the small system as my playground and the larger one as the office,” Andy says.

Once the brewery’s bottling line is running, the Turcottes’ plan is to distribute 70 barrels per month in the Houma and Ponchatoula areas and brew up to 10 barrels per month for consumption at the brewery. Growlers will be available for purchasing beer to go.

Louisiana Purchase Brewing’s taproom will be open Wednesday through Friday evening and all-day Saturday. Andy says he’s working on a pale lager recipe and plans to brew a wide variety of styles.

Brewery news USA, LA: New Orleans’ Royal Brewery receives its brewing license
Royal Brewery (7366 Townsend Place, 504-415-8444) in New Orleans East is the third brewery this month to receive its license to brew beer in the city. It's the 10th brewery (including brewpubs) in the city and the 33rd in Louisiana, BestOfNewOrleans.com reported on March 21.

Owners Raymond and Mandy Pumilia and head brewer Michael Ogden have started brewing Culicidae Ale, a pale ale fermented with British yeast.

The brewery is near the intersection of Morrison and Downman roads, and close to the Lakeshore Landing waterfront development, which houses the refurbished PT-305 boat in partnership with the National World War II Museum.

Brewery news USA, WY: The Accomplice Beer Company now pouring its very own craft beers
The Accomplice Beer Company in downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming is now pouring its very own craft beers. After months of preparation including the installation of new brewery equipment, the Accomplice is now serving six core beers, three seasonal styles and a few guest taps, Brewbound.com reported.

Housed in the historic Cheyenne Depot Plaza, the Accomplice is a unique brewery concept with self-pour taps and a newly expanded food menu including such favorites as kale salad, baby back ribs, chicken wings, and brewery sliders. The self-pour taps allow customers to sample a variety of beers without having to purchase a full pint — giving customers complete control of their journey into Accomplice craft beers.

Brewery news USA, MI: Sidhe Brewing Company closing down, owner plans to open new brewery soon
Hurry and get your last pint at Sidhe Brewing Company on Payne Avenue in Saint Paul, MI, because the East Side brewery is closing for good at the end of the week, TwinCities.com reported on March 23.

It’s not the end of the line for owner Kathleen Culhane, though — she plans to open a new brewery in the former Station 4 building on the corner of East Fourth and North Sibley streets in Lowertown.

There’s no definite timeline for the opening of the brewery, to be called Culhane Brewing Company, but Culhane said she’d love to “get open while baseball is still going on down there.” That said, she said six months was probably the earliest they could complete the infrastructure.

She’s raising funds for a new, 10-barrel brewhouse, but she will be able to start with her current 2-barrel system regardless.

A pub that will share the space will provide Culhane with food in the taproom, and there will be a stage for live performances, which have been a staple at Sidhe.

Culhane said there were several problems that led to the closing of Sidhe. First, the location of the brewery was hard to find — it was in the back of multi-tenant ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thaibev expected to take a step closer to becoming regional beverage player after restructuring
CIMB is maintaining its “add” call on Thai Beverage with S$1.07 target price, on expectations the company will take a step closer to becoming a regional beverage player once F&N and Frasers Centrepoint’s restructuring are completed by September, The Edge Markets reported on March 24.

The corporate revamp of Thaibev’s 28% stake in both F&N and FCL has long been expected. This involves Thaibev divesting its FCL stake and buying a bigger F&N stake.

According to CIMB, the difference this time round is management is sounding quite confident that the restructuring is expected to be completed by Sept 2017 although details have so far been scant.

With the restructuring, Thaibev will no longer be viewed as a “one product one country” company. It will be on the verge of evolving into a regional beverage player which will help to re-rate the sock.

In a report on March 22, analyst Jonathan Seow says the most likely scenario is to first divest FCL and use the proceeds to enlarge the group’s stake in F&N.

The next step is F&N’s inorganic expansion into Vietnam through Sabeco. This is in line with the group’s Vision 2020 of deriving more than 50% of its revenue from both non-alcoholic beverages and ...More info on site
