DRY HOPPING - DIFFERENT SCALE - DIFFERENT FLAVOUR

ABSTRACT
This was basically a summary of trials done by a German research team. They used the hop variety Comet in dry hopping three different beer batch sizes: 17L (keg), 8 hl, and 140 hl (CCTs) at an addition rate of 1,47 ml hop oil/hl or 100g of hops/hl. Temporary circulation was used for a homogenized yield of aroma transfer. Analytical methods and tasting impressions showed significant differences in various descriptors. The small scale trial showed more fruitiness than the others. The mass-transfer rates of the hop aromatic oils to the beer clearly depend on the scale of the trials. In particular, the mass-transfer rates of myrcene and linalool differ between the scales. Correlations of analytical results with the tasting results showed that the tasters were able to detect the measured differences in the mass-transfer rates of volatile hop compounds. Therefore, brewers cannot necessarily expect to achieve similar aroma impressions when scaling up laboratory- scale trials to industrial-scale trials.

Brewery news USA: The Brewers Association reports craft beer industry results for 2016
The Brewers Association (BA) — the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers — on March 28 released 2016 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. With over 5,300 breweries operating during the year, small and independent craft brewers represent 12.3 percent market share by volume of the overall beer industry. In 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, and saw a 6 percent rise in volume on a comparable base and a 10 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $23.5 billion, representing 21.9 percent market share. By adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases by large brewing companies. Microbreweries and brewpubs delivered 90 percent of the craft brewer growth. “Small and independent brewers are operating in a new brewing reality still filled with opportunity, but within a much more competitive landscape,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the overall beer market remains static and the large global brewers lose volume, their strategy has been to focus on acquiring craft brewers. This has been a catalyst for slower growth for small and independent brewers and endangered consumer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Wild Heaven to open new brewery in Atlanta
The Atlanta beer scene will be adding to its’s growing numbers following Wild Heaven’s announcement that it plans on opening a second brewery and taproom location at the Lee + White development along the Atlanta Beltline, Patch.com reported on March 27.

Located adjacent to the Beltline Westside Trail, “Wild Heaven Westside” will consist of more than 21,000 square feet of space, including a large area overlooking the Atlanta Beltline that will enable patrons to enjoy being outdoors while sipping beer and nibbling food made onsite. The facility is slated to open in first half of 2018, according to a company release.

“We plan to create an incredible beer and food destination in an area of Atlanta whose time has come,” said Wild Heaven President Nick Purdy in a statement. “Beyond that, this facility provides space for our ongoing growth and expansion.”

Wild Heaven Brewmaster Eric Johnson said the company’s new investment of greater than $5 million will make overall operations run smoother and more efficient.

“We’ll start with a 15-barrel brewhouse allowing production of new beers plus smaller-run beers from our lineup, followed by a 60-barrel system that will take over production of our mainline beers,” he said in a statement. “Then our Avondale ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: 1840 Brewing Company getting ready to tackle barrel aging his summer
Barrel aging requires patience, time and space. At its best, it produces some of the best beers in the world that have amazing depth and complexity. When it goes wrong, risks like infection from bacteria hidden in the barrel mean a batch is best poured down the drain.

Brewer Kyle Vetter knows all of this and is ready to tackle barrel aging at his ambitious new project, 1840 Brewing Company (342 E. Ward St., Milwaukee), the Milwaukee Magazine reported on March 27.

The brewery, which plans to open to the public in the summer, specializes in oak barrel fermentation and aging.

“I fell in love with barrel aging and blending while I was working at Aspen Brewing Company,” explained Vetter. “Milwaukee was lacking in sour and wild ales and so we decided to start a brewery with a very specific focus. Our goal is to highlight yeast as well and show Milwaukee all the different ways beer can be made using oak at some point in the process.”

Vetter has the pedigree for heading up the brewery. The Milwaukee native had a stint as the oak manager at Aspen Brewing and also worked at Ska Brewing in Durango, Colorado.

1840 Brewing has a small one-barrel ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Grass Valley Brewing Company’s conditional use permit approved by Planning Commission
There's a lot brewing in Grass Valley.

Details emerged last month of plans for a new craft brewery in The Union's old printing location at 464 Sutton Way, The Union of Grass Valley reported.

On March 21, the Grass Valley Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for another craft brewery, Grass Valley Brewing Company, in historic downtown. Co-owners Tom Rogers, a Sacramento Fire Department captain, and Chad Wingo, The Union's business development manager, said they hope to have the brewery open at 141-143 East Main Street — the former site of Tripp's Auto Body — by the end of the year.

Chris DeSena, the north division chief for Cal Fire, and 49er Coin Laundry owner Matt Kinney are also investors.

Heidi Wingo, Chad's wife, is also involved.

"Opening a brewery or a pub has been a goal of hers for the past 10 years," Wingo said. "Heidi is braver than me."

Plans for the 7,600 square-foot building include a 1,700 square-foot taproom, a 5,600 square-foot brewery and storage area, a kitchen, outdoor patio seating near a roll-up door, and a grain silo featuring the brewery's logo.

While there are no definitive plans, there's hope the brewery will feature live music, at least at some point. There's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Turgua Brewing Co joins Western North Carolina’s craft beer scene
It’s a busy time for craft brewing in Western North Carolina, with a handful of new breweries opening in and around Asheville. The latest to join the scene is Turgua Brewing Co., which is now pouring beers at its tasting room at 31 Firefly Hollow Drive in Fairview, the Mountain Xpress reported.

Owner and brewer Phil Desenne says Turgua focuses on making “unique” beers featuring locally sourced ingredients. The brewery opened with a golden rye made with organic malt. He’s following with a porter, a red ale and a turmeric ale, all brewed with “crystal-clear” well water from his 5-acre farm.

Desenne has plans in place to work with a local organic farmer farmer to source such ingredients as paw-paws and sour cherries for his brews. “My partner farmer is putting in a hops yard and fruit trees,” he says. The hops will include Cascade, Centennial and Columbus varieties.

The brewery has a small indoor tasting room and more seating at an “outdoor space where people can walk around and enjoy nature,” he says. The business is named after the area of Venezuela where Desenne was born. With a career in educational technology behind him, this is his first commercial brewery venture, but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Welltown Brewing planning to open in downtown Tulsa
Welltown Brewing is a new brewery planning to open in downtown Tulsa, although they have not released where that is just yet, KTUL reported.

The owners, Jeremy Diamond and his father-in-law Paul Whitham are in the final stages of locking in their location.

They wanted a space that would work better with their tap room focus and be cost efficient in the heart of Tulsa.

“We’re the guys that are really going to focus in on the tap room creating a community space where you can come, grab a pint and sit right across from your friend at one of our community tables,” Diamond said in one of his social media videos.

Since they don’t have the keys to their building, they plan to announce their location in April and start the demolition process as soon as possible.

“We’ve literally been waiting for this for two years,” Diamond said. “Most people think oh yeah you can just get up and get going well there’s a lot of red tape involved.”

Opening a brewery wasn’t necessarily a lifelong dream.

“This restaurant had asked if I could do a beer for them and I said my father-in-law is a home brewer,” Diamond said. “That was kind of the first ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Split Rock Brewing in the works in Twillingate
Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery is currently in the works in Twillingate, a small town on Twillingate Island just off the northeastern shore of Newfoundland.

Split Rock Brewing is being founded by homebrewers Allison and Matt Vincent, along with business partners Tim and Robin Vatcher.

According to the ACBB report, the group are “fans of brewing (and drinking) English-style beer, and will be launching with a variety of those, including a Bitter, Red Ale (with rye), Brown Ale, Stout, and IPA, as well as a Belgian Witbier and Cream Ale.”

Brewery news Canada, BC: Backroads Brewing’s brewery now open for business in Nelson
Backroads Brewing has announced that its brewery and taproom is now open for business in Nelson, BC, Canadian Beer News reported on March 27.

Founded by Brent Malysh with partners Tracey Brown and brewmaster Mike Kelly, Backroads had a soft opening this past weekend, with four beers – Saison, Kellerbier, Pale Ale, and Irish Red – available for glasses, flights, and growler fills.

Brewery news USA, NV: Revision Brewing Company opens its doors on March 23
A local brewery that already has secured 12 distribution contracts from across the country opened its doors on March 23 in Sparks, KOLO reports.

The brewery company is at 380 South Rock Boulevard, near the Nugget Casino. It is founded by Jeremy Warren. He began brewing beer in his garage in Reno nearly ten years ago. After a couple stops in California, he opened Revision Brewing Company in Sparks.

The staff picked the South Rock Blvd location because it provided a large production facility and to attract people who might not find downtown accessible.

"We want to have a taproom to where we can bring the community and cater to that. Give them a place to call home for our beer. But we also want to go national. Where Jeremy left off with his last brewery, he had national distribution we want to pick back up there and to be able to continue to grow," said Darla Roberts, Revision Co-Founder & Vice President of Sales & Marketing

Revision has only a few beers on tap, an IPA, Revision Double IPA and a Hoppy Pale Ale. The staff expects the lineup to grow. Revision will also brew experimental beers a few times each month.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Purple Skull Brewing launches its first brand
A new company focused on beers brewed with a unique and distinctive ingredient has launched its first brand, Canadian Beer News reported on March 24.

Purple Skull Brewing has been founded by the daughter-father team of Billie-Jo and Shawn LePage to release beers made with the addition of purple corn, an ancient crop that they describe as follows:

Hundreds of years ago, the purple corn crop was thought to be sacred by the ancient Incan civilization. It was very prominent in ceremonies and offered to the gods during rituals and sacrifices. It’s been used as a natural dye for food and drinks all throughout history. The intense pigment comes from the corn’s high content of anthocyanin.

The first purple corn infused beer to be offered by Purple Skull is Purple Pale Ale, a 4% abv session ale created by the LePages and brewmaster Brian Wilson of Highlander Brew Co. where the beer is being brewed under contract.

Purple Pale Ale is currently available in 473 ml cans at the Highlander retail store, and will soon be distributed to licensees in several Ontario regions including North Bay, Mattawa, Georgian Bay, Barrie, Ottawa, and the GTA.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Karate Garage Brewers launches as collaborative project of two Ontario brewers
Two Ontario brewers have announced the official launch of a collaborative brewing project inspired by their early homebrewing days, Canadian Beer News reported on March 22.

Karate Garage Brewers has been founded by Jeff Broeders (head brewer at Toronto’s Indie Ale House) and Aaron Spinney (formerly at Sawdust City Brewing, and head brewer & co-founder of the soon to open Merit Brewing in Hamilton).

Taking its name from the garage where the duo produced homebrewing experiments during college – which was in turn named after a scene from the classic comedy Step Brothers – Karate Garage is intended to “conjure those college vibes to create raw, unedited beers while having a total blast and making great friends along the way,” according to Spinney.

The new project will be officially kicked off on Sunday April 2nd with a tap takeover at Craft Heads Brewing in Windsor. Dubbed BrewstleMania, and taking place on the same day as WrestleMania 33, the event will feature more than 30 wrestling-themed beers brewed by Spinney and Broeders together with Bryan Datoc of Craft Heads.

Vintage WrestleManias will be screened during the day, followed by a live airing of WrestleMania 33 in the evening, and partial proceeds from the day will ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: FirkinStein Brewing planning second location in South Shore region
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a nanobrewery in Nova Scotia’s South Shore region has announced plans to open a second location that will allow it to finally operate a retail store and tap room.

FirkinStein Brewing opened in September 2015, and until now has been selling growlers to customers exclusively via home delivery and farmers’ market sales.

According to ACCB, “the second location will feature a 300 litre pilot system for more fun and experimental small batch brewing, and a storefront where folks can purchase bottles and growlers of their beer, and sit for a spell enjoying their selections on tap.”

The new facility is expected to open this June on King Street in Bridgewater.

Brewery news Japan: Asahi to take on EUR7.4 bln in bank loans to finance purchase of AB InBev’s European assets
Japanese beer maker Asahi Group Holdings Ltd said on March 29 it will take on 7.4 billion euros (6.36 billion pounds) in bank loans to finance its acquisition of European assets from Anheuser-Busch InBev SAC NV.

The brewer, known for Japan's best-selling "Super Dry" beer, in December agreed to buy a group of eastern European beer brands, including Pilsner Urquell, from AB InBev for 7.3 billion euros.

In a statement, Asahi said it will take on short-term loans from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Mizuho Bank Ltd.

Companies typically borrow on a short-term basis as bridging loans before securing permanent financing through, for instance, syndicated loans or bonds.

An Asahi spokesman said nothing has been decided about permanent financing.

Brewery news Nigeria: New details reported as to why Diageo failed in its bid to increase share capital in Guinness Nigeria Plc
There are fresh indications as to why Diageo Plc, the parent company of Guinness Nigeria Plc, failed in its bid to increase its share capital in the brewery giant, the Nation Newspaper reported on March 24.

It may be recalled that Diageo had in mid-September 2015 announced its intention to make an offer through its wholly owned subsidiary, Guinness Overseas Limited for up to 15.7% of the share capital of Guinness Nigeria Plc.

The Nation gathered that everything seem okay as the different parties worked out the finer details of the deal.

However, trouble began to brew when some local shareholders vowed to resist any move to sell more shares to the parent company under any guise.

Convinced about what it considered the impropriety of the proposed deal, the shareholders set machinery in motion to thwart the plan thus leading to a stalemate. Not happy with the turn of event in spite of making several entreaties to pacify the aggrieved shareholders, Diageo naturally soft-pedalled and it subsequently communicated its decision not to go any further with the potential offer to Guinness Nigeria Plc.

Further checks at the Nigerian Stock Exchange by The Nation revealed that Guinness Nigeria Plc had received a letter from Guinness Overseas ...More info on site

Brewery news Slovenia: Heineken starts bottling its flagship beer at its Laško brewery
Less than two years after it was acquired by Dutch brewer Heineken, the brewery in Laško has started bottling its owner's flagship beer. The next step will be making the brew in Laško, The Slovenia Times reported on March 28.

The bottling of Heineken beer in Laško was launched on March 27. The beer will be sold in the former Yugoslavia, north Italy and Hungary.

Dušan Zorko, the director of Pivovarna Laško Union, told the Večer newspaper that this gave Laško the status of strategic brewery in the Heineken group while filling spare capacity.

Last week the bottling of Heineken cider commenced in the company's second location in Ljubljana.

Pivovarna Laško Union last year produced roughly 2.2 million hectolitres of beer. It expects to increase production by several hundred thousand hectolitres on account of bottling Heineken.

While the company has reduced its workforce by nearly a quarter since the acquisition, to about 650, it could hire additional staff if other Heineken brands are bottled in Slovenia as well, according to Zorko.

Malt news Zambia: Finance Minister tours Zambian Breweries’ malting plant ahead of its formal opening
Zambia’s Finance Minister Hon. Felix Mutati toured the Zambian Breweries’ new state-of-the-art maltings plant in the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ) this week to familiarise himself with the operations ahead of its formal opening by H.E. President Edgar Chagwa Lungu later this month, the Lusaka Times reported on March 28.

The new US$33 million plant is part of the group’s long-term investment plan in Zambia and is set to boost purchases of barley from local farmers as a key ingredient in the company’s popular Mosi, Castle and Castle Lite lagers.

“Zambian Breweries is a perfect example of the public-private partnership (PPP) and a role model of industrialisation, value addition and import substitution,” said Mr Mutati.

He said the company could make more money through the export of the surplus barley, especially that it was currently sourcing its ingredients through local farmers, which had in turn empowered those suppliers.

During a presentation by Zambian Breweries, Mr Mutati noted the need for industrialisation within the MFEZ. He was also happy that Zambian Breweries was contributing to employment creation and the company’s support to small-scale farmers that were growing the ingredients for its beer production.

The company’s multi-million dollar investment in the malting plant is a ...More info on site

Barley news India: AB InBev training Indian farmers to boost barley output
World’s biggest beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev is training Indian farmers to boost barley output as part of its endeavour to increase local procurement and reduce imports, The Financial Express reported on March 27.

Presently, the company’s Indian subsidiary requires about 50,000 tonnes of barley annually, of which 35,000 tonnes is procured locally and the rest imported. Under its SmartBarley global program, the company with France’s biggest grain cooperative Axereal is undertaking joint research on high yielding variety of barley for the last five years at Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

The company has conducted field trial of high yield imported varieties and was showcased to farmers at ‘Kisan Kaushal Sangoshti’ held on March 27 at Farukh Nagar, Haryana. “India is a very important market for us. We will continue to reach out to them through the Sangoshti and our SmartBarley program to help create sustainable livelihood and the best possible barley for our business,” AB InBev India President Pedro Aidar said in a statement.

The purpose of the Smart Barley program is to ensure farmers are able to increase productivity “resulting in local sourcing, reducing our reliance on imports,” the company’s Corporate Affairs Director Devashish Dasgupta said.

Farmers are also trained on efficient ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania & Hungary: Heineken settles row with small Romanian brewer out of court
A row between Heineken and a small Romanian brewer backed by the Hungarian government looked to be over on March 27, just days after Budapest threatened to ban the Dutch giant's famous red star logo, Bizcommunity.com reported.

Heineken and Lixid Project, based in Transylvania, a region in Romania with a large ethnic Hungarian population, said in a joint statement that their dispute had been settled out of court. "Both companies now look forward to (focusing) on what they do best and enjoy most: brewing beer," said the statement seen by AFP.

The deal appears to have ended a bitter dispute framed by the Hungarian government as a "David and Goliath" battle against a multinational firm "abusing its power" over a small company run by ethnic Hungarians.

The dispute escalated after the Dutch firm's Romanian subsidiary won a brand-name dispute against Lixid Project in January. A court ruled that their Hungarian-language "Csiki" beer was too similar to Heineken's Romanian-language "Ciuc" range and infringed trademark rights.

Budapest slammed the decision as "undignified, unjust and anti-Hungarian" and supported calls to boycott Heineken products. Then draft legislation brought to parliament by senior government officials this month proposed a ban on the commercial use of "symbols of totalitarian dictatorships" ...More info on site
