Brewery news Mexico & USA: Mexican farmers asking US President to stop Constellation Brands building brewery in Mexicali
Mexican farmers are asking President Trump for help stopping a local brewery's new plant, News 10NBC reported on March 31.

Victor-based Constellation Brands is planning a $1.4 billion plant in Mexicali, Mexico. But, according to the Wall Street Journal, local farmers are afraid the plant would use too much water in an area with an already naturally low water table.

Dry conditions there have already forced formers to stop using thousands of acres of farmland.

"We haven't been able to do a second planting in years, but we're inviting in a company that's going to consume a ton of water," farmer Pablo Rangel tells the journal. "It doesn't make sense."

The farmers have protested the company, hoping President Trump will bring it back to the states.

Brewery news USA, IL: Chicago’s Finch Beer Co. to begin producing and delivering again
Four months after suspending its brewing operations, Chicago’s Finch Beer Co. plans to begin producing and delivering products once again this month, Brewbound reported on April 3.

“We never went away,” Finch managing partner Jamie Lisac told Brewbound, “but we’re back.”

It’s the latest move toward stability in the tumultuous 6-year life of Finch Beer, which was launched in 2011 by Ben Finch. The company struggled early on with beer-quality issues as well as a distribution strategy that favored broader market expansions over deeper local penetration. Finch, the founder, had also failed to make good on promises to build a brewery on the Chicago River — and later in Long Grove.

Midway through 2016, Mr. Finch was forced out of the company by investors who cited production inconsistencies, declining sales and a failure to achieve local market success as reasons for the takeover.

“I do believe we have some work to do to overcome those past failings,” Lisac said. “I feel like we’re in a position — between the brew team that we have and the facility — after a year of a lot of hard work to fix the sins of the past.”

The process of repairing those sins began in January, when Lisac ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: River Hawk Brewing aiming at spring opening in Channahon
This spring, Channahon residents, who once spent nights together perfecting their home brew beer and wine, will share their beer knowledge, as well as that of a brew school graduate, at River Hawk Brewing, the Morris-Herald News reported on April 3.

The soon-to-open craft beer brewery was put together by friends Tom Sperling, Tim Engler and Dustin Fryman, all of Channahon, who have brewed together for the past 10 years. The trio recently hired Ian Pershey of Channahon, who graduated from Brewlab, located in the United Kingdom.

During a brainstorm session on a name, Fryman threw out River Hawk because of the natural landscape and wildlife found around the Channahon area and it stuck.

The owners wanted to create something local in their community and couldn’t be happier with the location at 24735 W. Eames St. in Channahon.

“We looked for six months and we knew we wanted a Minooka or Channahon location. After searching, this property became available on Route 6, which was easy to get to, ideal building and we have parking in the front and back,” Fryman said.

The owners hope to open in the next month or two.

The brewery takes up four business fronts and will feature European tavern-style seating with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Alpha Brewing Co. to open second location in Tower Grove
Alpha Brewing Co. will open a second location in Tower Grove in late fall. “We’ve closed on the building, ordered the equipment and construction has started,” said head brewer Derrick Langeneckert in an interview to the Sauce Magazine.

Langeneckert plans to announce the exact address at the brewery’s fourth anniversary party this Saturday, April 8, but he said the 13,000-square-foot space will house a 15-barrel system that should produce 1,000 barrels in the first full year of production. The brewery’s downtown facility at 1409 Washington Ave., currently produces 200 barrels annually.

“The first year we were open we made 200 barrels, and we’re still making 200 barrels a year,” Langeneckert said. “We just don’t have the space to make one more drop of beer.”

Brewery news Canada, BC: Crossroads Brewing opens its doors in Prince George
More than a year after it was first announced, a new brewery and restaurant-pub has opened its doors in Prince George, Canadian Beer News reported on March 31.

Founded by principal partners Daryl Leiski and Bjorn Butow, Crossroads Brewing is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and George Street in the city’s downtown, a location that was shuttered for several years before the brewery moved in.

Crossroads soft opened in mid-March, and is pouring a selection of beers from head brewer Patrick Moore including Alternative Facts Brown Ale, Iron Bridge Oatmeal Stout, Pidherny Pale Ale, Hail Mary IPA, Old Westie Amber Lager, and Clearcut Lager.

Brewery news USA, CA: Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse plans to open this fall in Sacramento
Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse announces plans to open a 15,600 sq. ft. facility incorporating a 15-barrel craft beer production brewery, tasting bar and a 300-seat smokehouse restaurant, including a 2,400 sq. ft. outdoor patio in the Downtown Sacramento/Southside Park area at 1322 V Street., Brewbound.com reported on April 1.

A joint venture between Sacramento area natives and co-owners, Brewmaster Peter Hoey and Rob Archie, owner of regional favorite Pangaea Bier Café, Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse plans to open fall 2017 and estimates to employ approximately 50 people.

Peter Hoey has worked toward this moment for over two decades. He has practiced his craft alongside the legends at Sierra Nevada, led the charge at Sacramento Brewing Company, and currently consults with the top beer brands in the country for BSG CraftBrewing, an industry supplier of brewing ingredients. Recent production collaborations include the highly sought after Hoeybeer with Santé Adairius Rustic Ales.

After a decade of collaborating together in the industry, partnering with Rob Archie on Urban Roots will fulfill Hoey’s life-long dream of producing some of the finest beers in the world, pairing them with simple, clean and delicious food, and showcasing Sacramento’s regional farm-to-fork ingredients.

A pioneer of national and international craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Boots Brewing Company has the go-ahead to open up in Watertown
After cutting through the redtape, Boots Brewing Company has the official go-ahead from city of Watertown officials to open up on Public Square, InformNNY.com reported on April 4.

Dan Daugherty, a firefighter in the city, has been wanting to open his brewery in the Lincoln Building, but an old law prevented beer from being brewed in that location of Watertown.

Previously, the city's Planning Board amended the law, and after a public comments session, council unanimously approved the change.

Daughtery told the Watertown Daily Times that he hopes to open Boots Brewing Company on the Square at some point this summer.

While brewers can set up shop in downtown, the tweaked law is much stricter than state law when it comes to how much beer can be made.

Brewery news USA, WI: Lake Mills Plan Commission approves conditional use request for Houblon Brewing Company
The city of Lake Mills Plan Commission unanimously approved a conditional use request by Lane and Sherry Smith for a new brewery in the downtown business district at its latest meeting on March 28 at City Hall, hngnews.com reported on March 31.

The new brewery, Houblon Brewing Company, plans to move into a two-story building at 121 S. Main St. in downtown Lake Mills, maintaining a tasting room and brewery on the first floor and an apartment on the second floor.

Houblon’s conditional use permit request will now go in front of the Lake Mills City Council at its meeting April 18 for final approval.

There are five questions the brewery had to meet for its conditional use permit to be approved, which are:

• Is the conditional use in harmony with the policies and standards of the city’s comprehensive plan?

• Does the conditional use result in adverse impacts to adjacent properties?

• Is the conditional use consistent with land uses for the property?

• Is the proposed conditional use in an area that won’t impose undue burden on any of the improvements, facilities, utilities or services provided by public agencies serving the property?

• Do the potential benefits outweigh any adverse effects?

Brewery news Canada, BC: Twin City Brewing now open for business in Port Alberni
Twin City Brewing has announced that its brewery and taproom is now open for business in the small city of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, Canadian Beer News reported on March 28.

Founded by owner/brewer Aaron Colyn, Twin City quietly launched on March 25 with four beers – Porter Alberni Dry Porter, Swedish Gymnast Blonde Ale, Run Of The Mill IPA, and Tickety Boo English Pale Ale – available for glasses, flights, and growler fills.

Twin City Brewing is located at 4503 Margaret Street in Port Alberni, and is open from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily.

Brewery news USA, TX: San Antonio’s Branchline Brewing Co. files for bankruptcy
San Antonio’s Branchline Brewing Co. has filed for bankruptcy protection after about four years of operation, My San Antonio reported on April 5.

The small brewer reported assets of less than $50,000 and liabilities ranging from $100,001 to $500,000 in a bare bones bankruptcy petition filed on April 5 with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in San Antonio.

Chapter 11 offers a financially troubled company protection from creditors while it seeks to reorganize its debts.

The filing comes a little more than a month after Branchline posted a notice on Facebook that it was “going through a restructure period” and closing its tap room on March 4.

“We don’t believe this is a good bye but rather a see you soon,” the Facebook post stated. “We need some time to regroup and hopefully come back stronger, with that original fire that we once had.”

Branchline sought bankruptcy protection to “restructure its existing business production model to reduce operating costs so that its pre-bankruptcy creditors may be paid from the proceeds of its streamlined operations,” Michael O’Connor, the brewer’s bankruptcy lawyer, said in an email.

“Branchline will continue operating and producing its high quality and popular line of fine beers and ales,” O’Connor said. “Same product, same great ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines & Vietnam: San Miguel Corp. “evaluating and may bid” for Vietnam’s Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp.
San Miguel Corp. plans to invest $34 billion in an oil refinery, an integrated steel complex and an ocean-tide power plant as the Philippines’ largest company by sales expands amid forecasts for robust economic growth in the country, according to its president, Bloomberg reported.

The company, which sells nine of every 10 beers in the Philippines, is also “evaluating and may bid” for Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., President Ramon Ang told reporters on March 31. Vietnam may provide an anchor to increase its brewery business as consumption in the country is growing at an annual rate of at least 10 percent, five times that in the Philippines, he said.

“The businesses we ventured into have matured, such that the company is in a very stable position,” Ang said, citing compounded annual 20 percent growth in recurring profit and a near fourfold increase in assets since 2008 following San Miguel’s diversification from food and drinks into non-allied industries such as toll roads and resources. Excluding one-off items, profit will rise at least 20 percent to about 60 billion pesos ($1.2 billion) this year, he said.

Brewery news India: AB InBev CEO in India to review Indian operations
Anheuser-Busch InBev Chief Executive Carlos Brito is in India to review Indian operations barely four days after the ban on highway liquor shops in the country. This is the first India visit for Brito after the world’s largest brewer acquired rival SABMiller Plc six months ago, the Economic Times reported on April 5.

“Carlos Brito regularly visits our markets and is currently in Bengaluru as part of a standard market visit,” confirmed the company without divulging specific agenda.

While the maker of Budweiser, Fosters and Hoegaarden is the second-largest beer company in India, it has been losing share to rivals including Carlsberg. “The business is slowing down in India and discussing issues in distribution and workforce due to integration with SABMiller is on the agenda,” said an official who didn’t wish to be identified adding that Brito has no plans to meet government representatives or trade.

The India headquarter has been recently shifted from Gurgaon to Bengaluru, reporting into the Zone President for Asia Pacific South, based out of Melbourne, Australia.

“The company has been losing share since the past few years — from about 24% in 2014 to 19% now,” said the official. “The recent ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries expects sluggish sales growth due to higher taxation
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) leading brands Tusker and Guinness are projected to register sluggish growth in the medium term in Kenya due to higher taxation, the brewer’s parent company Diageo has said.

John O’Keeffe, Diageo Africa’s president, says a 43 per cent increase in excise duty on beer beginning December 2015 has adversely impacted performance of the two leading brands and that it will take time for them to bounce back.

UK-based global brewer Diageo owns 50.02 per cent of EABL. Excise tax on beer increased to Sh100 per litre from the previous Sh70 per litre, forcing the brewer to adjust its prices upwards with a depressing effect on demand for some of its products.

“While bottled beer and our overall performance in Kenya will improve in the second half, the excise duty increase has put bottled beer out of the reach of many consumers,” Mr O’Keeffe told investors during a conference call.

“It will likely take longer to get Guinness and Tusker back to consistent growth.”

Mr O’Keeffe said the brewer is in open discussions with government stakeholders on various issues including “seeking a sustainable and predictable tax environment” in order to reel in “excessive duty rises on beer”.

He added that EABL is ...More info on site

Hops news Brazil: Brasil Kirin trying to grow hops where no one has grown them before
It was more than a decade ago that grower Rodrigo Veraldi first planted a few hop seeds on his farm, high in Brazil’s Mantiqueira Mountains, northeast of the city of Săo Paulo. To Veraldi, who grows specialty fruits and berries, the experiment was mainly a side project. According to conventional wisdom, hop vines need cold winters and long summer days found in places like Germany and the Yakima Valley; Veraldi just wanted to see if he could get hops to grow somewhere beyond their climatic comfort zone, DRAFT Magazine reported on April 3.

While some of Veraldi’s plants showed promise in his greenhouses, it was a different story outside, where they couldn’t withstand the heavy summer rains that soak the lush mountain slopes. Eventually, he pulled the plug, tossed the remains of his hop experiment onto the scrap pile and moved on to other things.

Two years later, while planting corn beside that old scrap pile, Veraldi was shocked to find that an enormous hop vine, covered in fragrant cones, had quietly burst forth and grown up a nearby tree. Stunned, he knelt beside the vigorous plant and apologized for having given up on the idea. Veraldi isn’t sure which of his ...More info on site
