USA: Beer continues to boost Constellation Brands annual results
|
Beer continues to be the big growth driver for Constellation Brands.
On April 6, the wine, spirits and beer maker reported its annual earnings, which were boosted by $4.2 billion in net beer revenues for the fiscal year ending February 28, a 17 percent increase over the prior year.
“Our beer business continues to be a powerhouse for growth,” Constellation Brands CEO Rob Sands said in a press release. “We exceeded our profit and margin goals for the year. These excellent results were driven by solid performance for every brand in our portfolio, which resulted in Constellation being the No. 1 growth contributor to the U.S. beer industry for the year.”
Organic net beer sales increased 13 percent on the year due to volume growth and pricing as well as an acquisition benefit from the $1 billion deal to purchase California-based craft brewery Ballast Point. Constellation’s beer shipments increased 11.1 percent for the year with depletions growing 10.4 percent.
In the fourth quarter alone, net beer sales increased by 11 percent, to $891.2 million, and depletions grew 6.2 percent.
In the release, Sands highlighted Constellation’s “industry-leading depletion growth” of around 10 percent during the first the months of the 2017 calendar year, despite a “challenging

USA: Constellation Brands CEO "extremely optimistic" about the company
|
Constellation Brands' stock is flying, and CEO Robert Sands said he is "extremely optimistic" about the company's 2017 prospects despite Wall Street's nail-biting about a potential tax on U.S. imports, CNBC reported on April 7.
"We're not going to sit around and worry too much or try to base our decision[-making] on the probability of this occurring," Sands told "Mad Money" host Jim Cramer on April 6.
And while the company has planned for whatever happens with the border tax, Sands has higher priorities as the CEO of the fastest-growing consumer packaged goods company in the United States.
Sands said the decision to use temporary fourth-quarter weakness as an opening to buy back over 1 billion shares of Constellation's stock, which hit an all-time high on April 6, was strategic.
"We bought back [1.1 billion] of our own stock at average price of about $151 and here we sit today at the moment at $171, so it's looking like a good decision," Sands said.
Constellation is no stranger to strategy. The impressive growth trajectory of one of the company's Mexican beer brands, Pacifico, could make it Constellation's next big hit, Sands said.
"All of a sudden, the growth on Pacifico has jumped up to high-double-digit growth,

UK: Diageo’s Northern Ireland business performs satisfactorily in FY2016
|
Diageo said the company's Northern Ireland business performed satisfactorily in a competitive marketplace after posting pre-tax profits of £2.7 mln, the Belfast Telegraph reported on April 6.
The Guinness owner stressed that a drop in turnover to £111 mln for the year ending June 2016, down from £122 mln, was "driven mostly by the disposal of certain brands and a reduction in spirits volumes".
The drinks giant sold off its Bushmills brand in 2014 to Casa Cuervo.
Diageo, which also owns Smirnoff, Harp and Baileys, acquired Tequila Don Julio from Casa Cuervo in Mexico in return for the whiskey.
In its latest Northern Ireland accounts, Diageo said: "The business performed satisfactorily in the year in a competitive market place for both beers and spirits.
"The business grew volumes in the beer category while turnover was depressed by lower pricing."
The company also insisted it maintained profits by "effective price control".
Diageo's accounts show that the bulk of its sales in Northern Ireland remained in beer, with £84.2 mln of turnover. That was bolstered by strong Guinness sales.
Its spirits business made up £26.8 mln of overall turnover.
Overall, pre-tax profits fell from £3 mln in 2015, to £2.7 mln.
The company employed an average of 142 workers across sales

Angola: Refriango invests more than $50 mln in construction of the first phase of its brewery in Angola
|
An investment of more than US$50 million made by Angolan beverage company Refriango in the construction of the first phase of a factory to make Tigra beer has made it possible to replace 60 million litres of annual imports, said the company’s chairman, Macauhub reported.
Estevão Daniel also told Angolan news agency Angop that this project will help to attract others in related areas such as packaging raw materials for the production of the beverages and technical services.
“The beverage sector, due to the development already noted in Angola, opens up opportunities for integration in the value chain, and is thus of high strategic interest in terms of economic diversification,” he said.
The chairman of Refriango also said that expansion of the new plant, with an additional investment of about US$32 million, will triple initial beer production capacity.
Refriango specializes in the production and distribution of juices, soft drinks, water, energy drinks and alcoholic beverages, and has a portfolio of 15 brands, some of which are market leaders in their segments, such as soda brand Blue, water brand Pura, juice brands Nutr and Tutti and Welwitschia tonic water.
The company owns one of the largest factories in Africa, with an annual production capacity of 1.9

UK & Ireland: Cans of Guinness could be an unexpected casualty of Brexit
|
Cans of Guinness could be an unexpected casualty of Brexit if a new customs border or tariffs are introduced between the Republic and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the European Union, it has emerged.
Guinness is one of Ireland’s most famous exports but Brexit will have a direct impact on its production as the black stuff crosses the Irish border twice before being shipped from Dublin to Britain and beyond, The Guardian reported on April 7.
The stout is made at the St James’s Gate brewery in Dublin. The drink is then pumped into tankers, known as “silver bullets”, and driven 90 miles to east Belfast where it is canned and then sent back to Dublin Port for onward distribution.
Diageo, the Guinness owner, confirmed in a Bloomberg report on April 7 that it had estimated a so-called “hard border” could cause delays of between 30 minutes and an hour, costing an extra €100 (£85) for each lorry-load of Guinness.
Each year the company makes 13,000 beer-related border crossings in Ireland and Guinness contingency plans estimate the delays could amount to €1.3 mln in additional costs a year.
Diageo would either be forced to absorb that cost or pass it on to the consumer

USA: Maryland’s brewers, beer wholesalers and bar owners reach agreement on legislation that would make possible Guinness brewery attraction in the state
|
Maryland's brewers, beer wholesalers and bar owners reached an agreement on legislation on April 7 that would allow a Guinness brewery attraction to open in Baltimore County and let craft breweries sell more beer in their taprooms, the Baltimore Sun reported.
But the legislation still must clear multiple hurdles before the end of the General Assembly session on Monday, April 10.
The compromise bill would allow production breweries — including the proposed Guinness facility — to sell significantly more beer in their in-house taprooms, and some of that beer could be produced off-site. In exchange, new breweries would have limited hours.
The legislation won approval on April 7 from the state Senate committee that handles alcohol issues, then flew through the full Senate on a 45-1 vote. It now heads to the House of Delegates, which must agree to the Senate's changes before the 90-day legislative session ends at midnight on April 10.
"We're happy we can move forward," said Dwayne Kratt, senior director of state government affairs for Diageo, the international liquor company that owns the Guinness beer brand.
Negotiations have been going on for weeks among Diageo; the Brewers Association of Maryland, which represents independent brewers; the Maryland Beer Wholesalers Association; and the

USA: MillerCoors CEO made about $5.5 mln last year
|
CEO Gavin Hattersley, the man at the helm of MillerCoors' ongoing turnaround mission, made about $5.5 million in total compensation last year, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 5.
Hattersley's compensation — a mix of base salary, stock and option awards, incentive pay and pension value — more than doubles his $2.4 million in compensation from 2015, when he was promoted to MillerCoors CEO. Hattersley was previously chief financial officer for parent company Molson Coors.
Chicago-based MillerCoors is now solely owned by Molson Coors. Last year, SABMiller sold its 58 percent stake in MillerCoors to Molson Coors, which already owned the rest, for $12 billion — a key divestiture for Anheuser Busch InBev as it acquired SABMiller in the $108 billion "megabrew" deal.
Under Hattersley's leadership, MillerCoors is trying to stop the volume sales decline by 2018 and return to growth by 2019.
