ABOUT THE STABILITY OF
BITTER COMPONENTS IN
HOPS DURING STORAGE
ABSTRACT
German researchers are specialists in identifying
and quantifying bitter components in hops. In this
project, heat maps were developed for all bitter
components during the storage of several years.
The data presented gives profound insight into the
molecular bitter compound variability of certain hops.
Quantitative analyses of hops stored with and without
the influence of oxygen revealed that the decline of
distinct hop constituents cannot be explained by an
increase in transformation products formed during
beer aging, thus implying unknown degradation
mechanisms in hops. In a controlled, cool and oxygen
free environment, the relevant bitter components proved
to be stable for a period of 2 years.

Canada: ‘Ground shifting’ under beer consumption as Canadians age and women increasingly prefer cider
|
As Canadians age, they are drinking less beer with baby boomer women leading the decline in consumption. But cider and local craft beer can help soften some of the downturn, a recent Mintel report found.
“While beer remains far and away the most popular alcoholic beverage in Canada (accounting for 80% of alcoholic beverage consumption), the ground is shifting,” Joel Gregoire, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel, said.
“Canada’s population is aging and one of the key distinctions is that the drop off in beer consumption among seniors primarily occurs among women.”
The declining pace of beer consumption has slowed down over the past two years and Canadians reported drinking an average of six and a half fewer litres in 2016 compared to five years ago; and 35% of Canadians over the age of 55 say they do not drink beer at all, according to Mintel.
The drop-off in beer consumption does not appear to be based on any one type of beer with declines evident across lager, ales, malts, and stouts, Mintel noted.

USA: Molson Coors’ beer sales forecast to suffer due to increasing marijuana use
|
Wall Street came out on April 20 with comprehensive research about the negative ramifications of rising cannabis use on alcohol consumption.
Cowen lowered its rating for Molson Coors on April 20 to market perform from outperform, saying the beer company's sales will suffer due to increasing marijuana use.
"We believe alcohol could be under pressure for the next decade, based on our data analysis covering 80 years of alcohol and 35 years of cannabis incidence in the US," analyst Vivien Azer wrote in a note to clients. "Since 1980, we have seen 3 distinct substitution cycles between alcohol and cannabis; we are entering another cycle."
The analyst noted during the three most recent cycles of alcohol consumption there was a "notable inverse correlation with cannabis use." She cited how during the 1980s and 1990s alcohol consumption fell 22 percent while marijuana use rose 18 percent.
In addition, alcohol drinking in the 18 to 25-year-old demographic has declined for five straight years through 2015 as marijuana use increased, according to Azer.

India: Heineken’s shareholder agreement with Vijay Mallya at odds with regulatory order
|
Dutch beer maker Heineken International is in a bind. Its shareholder agreement with Vijay Mallya for United Breweries Ltd entitles the Indian businessman to remain the local company's chairman for life, but a regulatory order makes him ineligible to be a director of any listed company, the Economic Times reported on April 20.
UBL has been forced to hold board meetings without a regular chairman, since the Securities and Exchange Board of India barred Mallya from the securities market as well as from holding any board or key managerial positions at companies.
The regulator's decision came after lenders declared him a "wilful defaulter".
Mallya is still listed on the company's website as its chairman, though an executive said he is no longer a director. He last chaired a UBL board meeting in November 2016, through videoconferencing from London.
Mallya, chased by banks seeking thousands of crores from him and authorities probing money laundering allegations, left India in March 2016 and never returned. He was arrested by British police on Tuesday on India's request but was soon released on bail.

South Korea: Fierce competition brewing in Korea’s beer market

There’s fierce competition brewing in Korea’s beer market.
Two local industry leaders, Lotte Liquor and Hite Jinro, unveiled new products this week in hopes of taking on imported beers that have been gaining popularity among Korean consumers, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on April 21.
Lotte Liquor on April 20 launched Fits Super Clear, its first beer brand since entering the market with Kloud in 2014. In between, the company released a variation of Kloud, called Kloud Mild, but this is the first time Lotte Liquor has developed a product with a completely different brand name. The move indicates its determination to raise its market share, which is currently the smallest at 4 percent.
Fits Super Clear was specifically developed for drinkers who like to mix beer with soju. The cocktail, known in Korean as somaek, is popular here, but Lotte’s Kloud is rarely used because of its strong hoppy flavor.
“Now our product portfolio comprises Kloud, positioned as a premium beer, and Fits Super Clear, which is targeted for a more general, low-cost market,” said Yang Moon-young, public relations head at Lotte Liquor.

USA: Barley acres expected to decline significantly in 2017
|
To no one’s surprise, the US barley acres are expected to decline significantly in 2017, according to the Prospective Plantings report issued by USDA on March 31.
Nationally, growers intend to plant approximately 2.5 million acres of barley this year, which is 17 percent less than the 3 million acres seeded last year.
According to Steve Edwardson, executive director of the North Dakota Barley Council, growers in the state intend to plant 470,000 acres this spring, a decrease of 36 percent from last year’s 740,000 acres. The following table, prepared by Edwardson, shows the trends in harvested acres for the key barley producing states in the U.S.
A brief review of production history over the last two years is needed to better understand the barley marketing outlook growers are currently facing.
“In general, growers in North Dakota experienced good yields and quality in the last two crop years of 2015 and 2016. The malting and brewing industry had relatively high acceptance rates for malting barley, and consequently it will take time for the industry to process the supply, thus resulting in reductions in planted acres and production for 2017,” Edwardson said.

France: Barley and soft wheat crop condition declines affected by persisting dry spell
|
The condition of French wheat and barley crops declined last week, marking a second successive weekly fall, farm office FranceAgriMer said on April 21, suggesting a persisting dry spell was starting to affect crops.
Warm, dry weather in the past month has raised concern about low moisture levels in France after a very dry winter.
FranceAgriMer estimated that 85 percent of soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition as of April 17, compared with 89 a week earlier.
Winter barley was rated 78 percent good or excellent, down from 82 percent a week earlier, while spring barley was rated 85 percent good/excellent against 86 percent the prior week, it said in a weekly crop report.
For grain maize, farmers had sown 57 percent of the expected area by April 17, up from 31 percent a week earlier and well ahead of the 9 percent progress seen at the same date last year, FranceAgriMer said.

World: Pernod Ricard says sales growth slows slightly in Q3
|
French spirits maker Pernod Ricard said on April 20 that sales growth slowed slightly in the third quarter, reflecting weakness in India and the earlier timing of the Chinese New year.
Pernod, the world’s second-biggest spirits group after Britain’s Diageo, kept its profit outlook unchanged and achieved some robust quarterly growth in the United States and in Europe.
Pernod Ricard posted sales of 1.987 billion euros ($2.13 billion) in the three months to March 31, up 3% on a like-for-like basis, compared with 4% growth in the second quarter.
This was, however, above the average of analysts’ estimates for 1% growth in a company-compiled consensus.
The owner of Mumm champagne, Absolut vodka, Chivas Regal Scotch whisky, and Jameson Irish whiskey kept its forecast for underlying operating profit growth of between 2% and 4% in the full year to June 30.

UK: Diageo to cut more than 100 jobs in Scotland over Brexit concerns
|
GMB union has accused the UK government of “gross betrayal” after drinks company Diageo announced plans to cut more than 100 jobs across its Scottish operations because of concerns over Brexit, the Independent reported on April 20.
Workers and trade unions were informed in the afternoon on April 20 that 70 redundancies will be made at Diageo’s Leven plant in Fife and a further 35 redundancies at its Shieldhall site, near Glasgow.
Diageo, which owns drinks brands including Baileys, Smirnoff and Guiness, confirmed the cuts are part of a review process which will see selected white spirits production moved to the company’s Santa Vittoria plant in Italy and to plants in the US.
GMB Scotland earlier this year warned the UK government’s Scottish Secretary David Mundell about the need for special measures to protect Scotland’s drinks manufacturing sector against the backdrop of Brexit uncertainty.
“We warned David Mundell and the UK government about the possible impact of Brexit on the future of jobs across our drinks manufacturing sector and about the need for protective measures to safeguard an industry worth billions to the Scottish and UK economies,” Louise Gilmour, GMB Scotland Organiser, said.
