WHAT IS THE AROMA POTENTIAL OF SPENT HOPS?
ABSTRACT
This question was asked by this US research team.
They tested several enzymes as well as a lager and
an ale yeast in an aqeous extract of spent hops of 18
different hop varieties. Aqueous extracts of spent hop
material (50 g/L) were shown to contain less than 1 g/L
(0.1 degrees Plato) of fermentable carbohydrates. They found that
slight increases in monoterpene alcohol concentrations
are influenced by the non-oil components present in
hops. So it is clear that aglycones are indeed liberated
from glycosides upon treatment with exogenous
enzymes. However the overall contribution of
glycosides to conventionally hopped beers should not
be overstated. Dosage rates used in this study were
10 to 50 times higher than those typically used in
brewing, yet only modest increases toterpene alcohol
concentrations were observed.

USA & South Africa: No more South African hops for US craft brewers
|
Hundreds of U.S. craft brewers that had been experimenting with a selection of South African-grown hops will no longer have access to the proprietary supply after Anheuser-Busch InBev, which owns the farm, said it would reserve nearly 100 percent of the latest yield for its own brands, Brewbound reported.
In a statement released on May 11, AB InBev said the decision to restrict access to those hops — which were grown at the SAB Hop Farms subsidiary previously owned by SABMiller and acquired by AB InBev last October when the MegaBrew merger was finalized — was the result of a “poor yield” in 2017.
“South Africa is not a traditional hop growing region,” AB InBev global hops procurement director Willy Buholzer said via a statement. “SAB’s R&D efforts made it possible to grow hops in South Africa but it is still less than 1% of the world hop acreage and production. This year, South Africa suffered from low yields. Previously, SAB has sold a small surplus of locally-grown hops to the market. Unfortunately this year we do not have enough to do so given the poor yield.”
But a U.S. supplier of those very same hop varieties believes the move is “anticompetitive” and

USA, IN: Field Brewing owners to break ground on their brewery in June
|
A Westfield couple plans to break ground on a new brewery near the city's downtown in June and to open in spring 2018, the Indianopolis Star reported on May 10.
The Westfield City Council on May 8 unanimously approved the plans for Field Brewing, clearing the way for development.
Gregory and Jackie Dikos own about three-quarters of an acre at the southeast corner of Ind. 32 (Main Street) and Cherry Street. They already have demolished several vacant buildings on the property.
Gregory Dikos said they've received a lot of interest in the project since filing plans in March.
They plan a sophisticated food menu for the gastropub, using local ingredients, with specialities prepared over a wood-burning fire. The gastropub will have indoor and outdoor seating, with a small parking lot and plenty of street parking.
While Gregory Dikos said he home brews, the couple plan to hire a head brewer.
Future plans include a distillery, though Indiana law requires brewers to hold beer permits for three years before they can apply for distilling licenses.
Westfield, a city of about 37,000 north of Carmel, has one brewery. Grand Junction has a brewpub a few blocks to the west and has opened a tap room near Grand Park.

USA & South Africa: No more South African hops for US craft brewers
|
Walnut Brewery, a longtime fixture in downtown Boulder, will close June 4, to be replaced by another staple of the city: Boulder Beer, The Denver Post reported on May 12.
Tennessee-based CraftWorks Restaurants & Brewery Group, the current owners of Walnut Brewery, announced on May 11 a transfer of ownership to Boulder’s Frank Day, founder of the original Old Chicago in Boulder and owner of the Boulderado Hotel. Day’s wife, Gina, is a part-owner of Boulder Beer, which will open Boulder Beer on Walnut in July.
“We’re Colorado’s first craft brewery, and there’s no better way to grow our legacy than to take over the location of Boulder’s first brewpub,” said Jeff Brown, Boulder Beer’s president and partner. “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to work with Frank and expand downtown.”
Brown has worked with Frank Day before: He was on the opening team of the Walnut Brewery, which debuted in 1990 at 1123 Walnut. The brewpub inspired Day to eventually launch Rock Bottom Restaurants, which grew into a 141-chain, $382 million group that included the Rock Bottom, Old Chicago and ChopHouse brands.
Day sold the business in 2010 for an undisclosed amount to a New York private equity firm, Centerbridge Capital Partners.

USA, IL: Open Outcry Brewing Co. aiming at mid-June opening
|
Open Outcry Brewing Co. received some important equipment in the afternoon on May 11 — two large stainless steel tanks and other devices used to make beer, DNAInfo reported.
The tanks were delivered on a flatbed trailer. Installers and a few others were offered a rare glimpse inside the new restaurant and brewery at 10934 S. Western Ave. in Morgan Park, Chicago.
Owner John Brand expects to open in mid-June. Already, the bar and other accents have been built using vintage barn wood he's hand selected from a wood collector in the Downstate town of Wing.
The tables have been made from wood pulled from the floor joists of a shuttered hardware store in Colfax, Ill. The roughly 4,000-square-foot brewpub will have seating for 110 people, Brand said.

USA, LA: Port Orleans Brewing Co. joins New Orleans’ craft beer scene
|
New Orleans gained another brewery on Tuesday (May 9) when Port Orleans Brewing Co. began pouring its beers. The restaurant Stokehold also opened that day inside the brewery's tap room, NOLA.com reported.
Port Orleans will focus on easy-to-drink ales and lagers. The first three beers, available at the tap room and on draft around town, are Storyville IPA, Slack Water Brown Ale and Riverfront Lager, the last a malty, Munich style Helles. Cans will be released in August or September.
The brewery, for a start-up, is big. It has a 30-barrel system. Richard Thomas, owner of Blue Runner Foods and a home brewer, is the force behind the brewery. He drafted five friends, including Saints offensive tackle Zack Strief, as partners. The team recruited brewmaster Brian Allen, of Mother’s Brewing Company in Springfield, Mo., to oversee the beer production.

USA, NY: Nanobrewery FLX Culture House to be launched in Geneva by a husband-and-wife team
|
Two of the most well-regarded restaurateurs in the Finger Lakes will soon try their hand at brewing, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on May 11.
Christopher Bates and Isabel Bogadtke, the husband-and-wife team behind Geneva's FLX Table and Dundee's FLX Wienery, announced plans this week for FLX Culture House, a nanobrewery at 20 Linden St. in Geneva.
Like the couple's restaurants, the brewery will be small with a very unique focus. Bates said the 400-square-foot brewery will focus on longer fermentations, sours and wild ales, blending and barrel aging.
And the Culture House won't be brewing at all. Instead, Bates said they will be fermenting, blending, and barrel aging. Geneva brewery Lake Drum will actually make FLX Culture House's wort, which will then be transported to the Linden Street nanobrewery.
“We’re a fermentation house,” Bates said.
Like India pale ale, sour is often a misnomer. It's a wide-ranging, far-reaching simplification of a style that spans different countries, different traditions and different brewing techniques. There are the five broader styles generally associated with sours: Berliner weisse, American wild ales, Belgian-style sours (Flanders red ale and Flander oud bruin), lambics, and gueuzes.
FLX Culture House will be focused on longer fermentation and blending of old and new

India: United Breweries discontinues brewing in Bihar due to prohibition of alcohol in the state
|
Vijay Mallya-promoted United Breweries said on May 11 it has discontinued brewing operations at its manufacturing unit in Bihar due to prohibition of alcohol in the state, The New Indian Express reported.
"Consequent to imposition of total prohibition effective April, 2017, commercial production at the company's brewery located at Naubatpur, District Patna has been discontinued," United Breweries Ltd (UBL) said in a regulatory filing.
The Nitish Kumar-led Grand Secular Alliance government had first banned the manufacture, trade, sale, consumption of country-made liquor from April 1, but later imposed a blanket ban on all types of liquor including foreign liquor in the state.
In September last year, the Patna high court quashed the government notification completing banning liquor in the state.
UBL said the Bihar government has challenged Patna High Court's decision and the matter is pending in Supreme Court.
UBL has 21 company-owned manufacturing units across the country. It operated only one unit in Bihar. In a separate filing, the company said it has launched a new product 'Kingfisher-Storm' in the strong beer category.

Australia: GrainCorp’s malt business continues to perform well
|
GrainCorp’s half-year earnings soared on the back of a big Australian grain harvest and a lift in export volumes, the Weekly Times Now reported on May 12.
The strong result, which the company (GNC) said was consistent with guidance it gave in February for the full year, led to a doubling of the interim dividend compared to last year’s payout.
Net profit for the period jumped sharply to A$90 million in the six months through March from A$20.4 mLN a year earlier, GrainCorp said on May 11.
Stripping out one-time items, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation was 76 per cent higher at A$236 mln, from A$134 mln previously, the company said.
Revenue for the half year was 19 per cent higher at A$2.46 billion against A$2.07 bln the year before.
In late February, GrainCorp forecast its fiscal 2017 ebitda would rise to between A$385 mln and A$425 mln, from A$256 mln the year prior, thanks to a record crop in eastern Australia and a strong performance from its GrainCorp Malt business.
The malt business continued to perform well, despite an unfavourable exchange-rate impact, and the expansion of a plant in Idaho due to come on line in July will more than double the site’s

Romania: United Romanian Breweries Bereprod to invest EUR1.2 mln in making unpasteurized beer
|
Romanian beer producer United Romanian Breweries Bereprod (URBB) will invest EUR 1.2 million in making unpasteurized beer under the Skol brand, local Wall-street.ro reported on May 11.
This is its first major investment this year. The company started working on this project at the end of 2015. The investment will generate a 6% increase in the production capacity or 150,000 hectolitres.
The company has hired 50 people since the beginning of this year for this project. URBB current team includes more than 750 employees.
“We will produce annually between 50,000 and 100,000 hectolitres of unpasteurized Skol beer,” said Shachar Shaine, URBB president.
He gave the example of the Carlsberg beer brand, which in Poland managed to have great results on the unpasteurized beer segment. “In five years, they’ve managed to increase the sales five times for that brand. The unfiltered beer sales account there for 20% of the market of 40 million hectolitres. I see the same potential for the Romanian market,” Shachar Shaine told Wall-street.ro.
URBB is the second local producer that starts making unpasteurized beer, after Ursus launched unpasteurized beer under the Timisoreana brand earlier this year. The unpasteurized Skol will be officially launched on the market in the next two weeks.

Africa: Diageo to roll out local Scotch whisky bottling operations across Africa
|
Diageo is planning to roll out local Scotch whisky bottling operations across Africa as the group continues its push behind mainstream spirits in emerging markets, The Spirits Business reported on May 12.
Speaking to investors earlier this week, John Kennedy, the group’s president of Europe, Russia, Turkey and India, said Diageo is focusing global investment behind its “accessible” blended Scotch brands, including Black & White & Bell’s brands.
Last year, Diageo’s CFO Kathryn Mikells said Diageo had implemented a “new shift” away from premium to value spirits in turbulent emerging markets such as Latin America and Africa.
“We have reframed the role that our primary Scotch brands will play,” Kennedy said.
“Whilst many of these [emerging market] consumers aspire to enjoy brands like Johnnie Walker or Buchanan’s, they simply cannot afford to on
every occasion and on the occasions they cannot we want them to purchase a Diageo Scotch.
“We have the brands, and we have the liquid to play a bigger role in this segment.”
Diageo’s primary Scotch brands have increased sales by 3%, Kennedy confirmed, while Black & White is “set to be a two million case brand”.
“Bell’s and Black & White allow us to compete effectively, recruit at the right price points, both

UK: Heineken announces launch of Heineken 0.0
|
Heineken on May 12 announced the launch of new drink Heineken 0.0, an alcohol-free version of its flagship lager, in the UK, the Business Insider reported.
The launch comes as consumers increasingly shun boozy drinks in favour of healthier options. Market research company Euromonitor International said on May 11 that the global alcoholic drinks market declined for the second year in a row in 2016. The volume of alcohol sold last year declined 0.2%, following a 0.8% fall in 2015.
The trend for "clean living" in the US and European markets has led to slowdown in alcohol sales. Figures from the UK Office for National Statistics released earlier this month show drinking rates in Britain are declining. 56.9% of people aged 16 and over had a drink in the week before being interviewed, down from 64.2% in 2005.
Heineken says in the release announcing 0.0 that the drink taps into the "growing cultural trend around the importance of responsible alcohol consumption and living a balanced, healthy lifestyle."
Gianluca Di Tondo, Heineken's senior director of global brand, says in a release on May 12: "The zero alcohol segment in Europe and Russia grew with a 5% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) between 2010 to 2015.

Belgium: AB InBev’s alcohol-free Jupiler 0.0% beer surpasses sales of its predecessor
|
AB InBev’s alcohol-free beer, Jupiler 0.0%, is a resounding success, surpassing its predecessor’s annual volume by the end of the month, Retail Detail Europe reported on May 12.
“Our Jupiler 0.0% sales in the January – April period are already 2.5 times higher than our Jupiler NA’s sales in the same period of last year,” AB InBev’s spokesperson Korneel Warlop said.
With 75% of sales from stores, the beer easily outperforms other beer brands in that area. Jupiler 0.0% is currently available in about 5,500 catering businesses as well.
AB InBev’s Belgian market share for non-alcoholic beers is up to 83.5%, although it only represents 2.2% of the overall beer market. Germany and Spain do much better in that regard, with 10.4 and 17.7% respectively. The company’s goal is to bring its non-alcoholic (or light alcoholic) drink volume up to 20% of its overall beer volume.

India: Carlsberg’s trademark infringement petition dismissed by the Delhi High Court
|
In a major relief to Som Distilleries & Breweries Ltd, the maker of the Hunter beer brand, the Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition filed by its Danish rival Carlsberg, alleging trademark infringement of one of its brands, VCCircle reported on May 12.
The Indian subsidiary of Carlsberg Breweries AS had alleged that Madhya Pradesh-based Som Distilleries was using the bottle design, labeling, pull-off caps and packaging identical to its brand Tuborg, which would create confusion in the minds of consumers.
“The defendant (Som Distilleries) is also in the same line of business, is marketing its product under the brand name ‘Hunter’, and has adopted an imitation of the registered bottle design, registered label mark and trade dress in respect of its product,” argued Senior Advocate Sudhir Chandra who represented Carlsberg in the case.
The dispute between the two beer brands can be traced back to April 2015 when Som Distilleries launched a rebranded version of its Hunter beer, which up until that time was being sold under different packaging and a different colour.
The counsel representing the domestic company argued that Hunter is a well-established brand introduced in 1995, and hence, the company has no reason to imitate the Tuborg brand.

India: AB InBev appoints new head of its India operations
|
World's largest brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev has appointed Ben Verhaert as the new head of its India operations, replacing Pedro Aidar, who became the business unit president for India and South Asia seven months ago, the Economic Times reported on May 12.
Verhaert has been with maker of Budweiser and Corona beer for over 15 years and held key positions within the sales and distribution team in Europe.
“While the industry faced some challenges, we focused on innovation, quality and talent to ensure that we are bringing the best products to our consumers and customers. Our commitment to India will only grow stronger from here," said Aidar in a statement. Aidar, who will move in a new role within AB Inbev, shifted to India nearly two years ago and led the company's integration of SabMiller that it acquired last year.
The management change comes at a time when the second larger brewer in India is consistently losing share to rivals including Carlsberg. The headquarter has been recently shifted from Gurgaon to Bangalore, reporting into the Zone President for Asia Pacific South, based out of Melbourne, Australia.
