USA: AB InBev to invest $2 bln in its US business
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, plans to invest $2 billion in the United States, where its flagship Budweiser lager has suffered from declining volumes and a falling market share over the past three years, Reuters reported on May 15.
The company, which recently bought nearest rival SABMiller for nearly $100 billion, said it was launching one of the largest capital investment programs in U.S. brewing history, investing close to $500 million this year and a total of $2 billion through 2020.
In 2017, it will spend more than $200 million on brewery and distribution projects, of which $82 million would be to improve national supply chains and to build distribution facilities in Los Angeles and Columbus.
Investment in many of its 21 U.S. breweries will also allow them to make different beers, or expand production of aluminum bottles.
The company will also push further into non-alcoholic drinks, such as the ready-to-drink tea Teavana it is producing in partnership with Starbucks .
AB InBev's beer sales in the United States have fallen as Americans have developed an increasing thirst for craft beer.
AB InBev responded in 2011 by taking over Goose Island, and has since added 10 more U.S. craft brewers. Its 12th planned addition, Wicked

USA: MillerCoors to break ground on Milwaukee brewery expansion on May 19
|
Barriers to entry in the beer business are low and that’s why there are more than 5,300 brewpubs, microbreweries and regional craft breweries operating in the United States.
But brewing some of America’s most popular beer brands and constantly experimenting with new beers and other beverages? That doesn’t come cheap.
On May 19, MillerCoors will break ground to expand the Tenth Street Brewery near downtown Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Independent reported on May 15.
The expanded facility includes new cellars, and a warehouse/pack hall and a brewhouse. It is designed to have the flexibility to serve as an incubator, brew small-batch beers and run variety packs. When completed, it will have annual capacity of around 250,000 barrels.
The expansion represents a $50 million investment and will create around 40 new jobs. The initiative to expand 10th Street was originally announced earlier this year.
MillerCoors invested approximately $300 million in supply chain in 2016. And, as the 10th Street expansion demonstrates, MillerCoors plans to invest at significant levels in 2017.
Tenth Street currently primarily brews beers from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company.

UK: Kingfisher Beer Europe to market and distribute the Cantonese beer Pearl River
|
Kingfisher Beer Europe has revealed its latest distribution deal, which allows it to market and distribute the Cantonese beer Pearl River across the UK, the Offlicence News reported on May 16.
Pearl River, produced by the Guangzhou Nansha Zhujiang Brewery, is named after the 1,375 mile river that flows through Southern China until it reaches the ancient city of Guangzhou, the home of Cantonese cuisine and Dim Sum. The brew is one of China’s biggest beer brands and its modern brewery produces 1.2 billion litres of beer a year.
Damon Swarbrick, ceo of Kingfisher Beer Europe, said: “The launch of Pearl River in the UK will capitalise on two dominant consumer trends in the beer market. Firstly, consumers are increasingly keen to match their beer to the food they are consuming. There are 3,500 Chinese restaurants in the UK and the vast majority of these are serving either Cantonese cuisine or Dim Sum, for far too long these restaurants have been unable to sell an authentic Cantonese beer to complement these flavours. Secondly, consumers are constantly on the lookout for new exciting discovery beers instead of the existing brands they have been drinking for years. We believe Pearl River is well placed

India: Carlsberg appoints new India managing director
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg on May 16 appointed Nilesh Patel as the managing director and vice president of the company, ETRetail.com reported.
Patel will replace Michael N. Jensen who will assume the role of managing director at Carlsberg in Myanmar to oversee the Thailand operations. Michael had joined Carlsberg India in 2012 and was promoted to managing director in 2014.
“Michael N. Jensen has moved to Myanmar as the Managing Director to replicate the success of India in this very important market for Carlsberg Group. He was instrumental in delivering healthy top-and bottom-line growth over the last three years,” said the company statement.
Prior to his new role, Patel was the senior vice president and president (Asia Pacific region) of cosmetic brand Avon. He has over 30 years of work experience and has served as the managing director and chairman of Heinz India.
In beer, UB dominates with 52% market share but Carlsberg, the maker of Tuborg strong beer, has gained the most with 15% share in the last five years giving stiff competition to SABMiller which is at about 20%.
According to a recent report by Ambit Capital, SABMiller has been losing market share to Carlsberg, which has followed an aggressive on-premise marketing of Tuborg

India: United Spirits bullish about growth prospects in India
|
Diageo-controlled United Spirits (USL) is bullish about its growth prospects in India, and expects a double-digit growth in top line, despite the regulatory uncertainties, according to a top company official, the Deccan Herald reported on May 12.
“Three years ago, we set our vision to become the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer goods company in India. To achieve that we set out a medium-term goal to grow top line double-digit and improve organic operating margin to mid-high teens,” USL CEO Anand Kripalu said in a presentation to investors in London.
Kripalu also said that the Supreme Court’s order to ban alcohol sales on national and state highways is unlikely to have a major impact on the company. “This (order) is creating a short-term impact, which is expected to go through to the first half of FY18 since some of the outlets have time till September 2017, to comply. We expect the impact to be mitigated eventually,” Kripalu said.
