Canada: Craft beer market still has room to expand – Molson Coors
|
The Canadian craft beer market still has room to expand even as growth in the United States begins to run out of steam, the head of Molson Coors Canada said on May 17.
Craft beer accounts for about six per cent of total volume in Canada, half of the relative size in the United States, CTV News reported, citing the the brewing giant.
According to the National Brewers Association in the U.S., American craft beer sales growth continued to outpace mainstream offerings at six per cent growth last year, but that is down from double-digit growth in prior years.
Fred Landtmeters, CEO of Molson Coors Canada, said he doesn't anticipate that happening in Canada because the market north of the border isn't as advanced as the U.S.
"I still see room to grow for craft as a segment as part of the total beer in Canada and the recent trends confirm this," he said after Molson Coors's annual meeting.
Craft beer accounted for 22 per cent of beer sales or US$23.5 billion last year, the National Brewers Association says.
In Canada, the maturity of the craft beer market varies by province.
In Ontario, for example, the craft beer sector has grown by more than 13 per cent

Ireland & USA: C&C to brew cider and beer for its rivals at underutilised plant in the US
|
C&C plans to brew cider and beer for its rivals at its underutilised plant in the US as it looks for ways to plug a slide in its revenues there. The company has blamed the decline on temporary “disruption” to its US business as it beds down a sales link-up with Pabst Brewing Company, the Irish Times reported on May 18.
As it announced annual results on May 17, C&C wrote down the value of its US arm by €129 million after a one-third drop in North American revenues.
Speaking afterwards, Joris Brams, who heads up its international division, said C&C’s plant would be “attractive to people who want to produce with us”. He said the Magners maker could brew cider or beer for companies in the US, and that it expected to have a number of deals ready in the near future.
“We have spare capacity. It would be a way to get more profits in the system [while it waits for its Pabst link-up to settle down].”
Stephen Glancey, the chief executive, said C&C was interested in providing more loans to more Irish pubs as an alternative to bank finance.
He said the group has a pub loan book of about €60 million,
