Canada: Craft beer market still has room to expand – Molson Coors
|
The Canadian craft beer market still has room to expand even as growth in the United States begins to run out of steam, the head of Molson Coors Canada said on May 17.
Craft beer accounts for about six per cent of total volume in Canada, half of the relative size in the United States, CTV News reported, citing the the brewing giant.
According to the National Brewers Association in the U.S., American craft beer sales growth continued to outpace mainstream offerings at six per cent growth last year, but that is down from double-digit growth in prior years.
Fred Landtmeters, CEO of Molson Coors Canada, said he doesn't anticipate that happening in Canada because the market north of the border isn't as advanced as the U.S.
"I still see room to grow for craft as a segment as part of the total beer in Canada and the recent trends confirm this," he said after Molson Coors's annual meeting.
Craft beer accounted for 22 per cent of beer sales or US$23.5 billion last year, the National Brewers Association says.
In Canada, the maturity of the craft beer market varies by province.
In Ontario, for example, the craft beer sector has grown by more than 13 per cent

Ireland & USA: C&C to brew cider and beer for its rivals at underutilised plant in the US
|
C&C plans to brew cider and beer for its rivals at its underutilised plant in the US as it looks for ways to plug a slide in its revenues there. The company has blamed the decline on temporary “disruption” to its US business as it beds down a sales link-up with Pabst Brewing Company, the Irish Times reported on May 18.
As it announced annual results on May 17, C&C wrote down the value of its US arm by €129 million after a one-third drop in North American revenues.
Speaking afterwards, Joris Brams, who heads up its international division, said C&C’s plant would be “attractive to people who want to produce with us”. He said the Magners maker could brew cider or beer for companies in the US, and that it expected to have a number of deals ready in the near future.
“We have spare capacity. It would be a way to get more profits in the system [while it waits for its Pabst link-up to settle down].”
Stephen Glancey, the chief executive, said C&C was interested in providing more loans to more Irish pubs as an alternative to bank finance.
He said the group has a pub loan book of about €60 million,

USA, OH: Inside the Five Brewing company plans to open its doors in spring 2018
|
A new business is headed to Downtown Sylvania in the space formerly occupied by Treo.
Inside the Five Brewing company will be located at 5703 Main Street and plans to open its doors in spring of 2018, 13abc Action News reported.
According to a release Brandon Fields along with his wife Katie Fields and friend Chris Morris plan to convert the space formerly known as Treo, into a brewpub.
Brandon and Katie grew up in the Sylvania area and moved to Florida where Brandon was the punter for the Miami Dolphins for 8 years. What began for Brandon as an off-season hobby quickly turned into a passion that he now wishes to share with the community. Brandon and Katie have returned to Sylvania to open Inside the Five Brewing Company with Chris, a 6 year NFL lineman veteran and native of nearby Temperance, Michigan.
"I first fell in love with craft beer after having Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale," said Brandon. "Since then, I have spent a lot of time brewing with and learning from Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. I have always enjoyed it when friends and family would come over to our house and try the newest beer creations."

USA, CO: New Belgium’s brewmaster to start his own Purpose Brewing and Cellars
|
Peter Bouckaert has spent recent weekends cleaning kegs.
That’s not typically a task he completes at his day job as New Belgium brewmaster. But the Belgian brewer enjoys working on a smaller scale — so much so that he’s stepping down from his 21-year post at New Belgium at the end of the year to start Purpose Brewing and Cellars in Fort Collins with the new owners of 1933 Brewing, The Coloradoan reported on May 19.
“I’m really looking forward to the simplicity of it,” Bouckaert said. “Brewing on a small system...and making beers that you don’t have to reproduce.”
The brewery is scheduled to open at the former 1933 Brewing space at 4025 S. Mason St. this summer.
Bouackert, the La Folie creator who is credited with introducing sour beers to America, said he was inspired during a recent sabbatical where he traveled the world to write a book on wood-aging.
“I sort of rediscovered the beauty of brewing,” Bouackert said.
Bouackert said his decision surprised many executives and co-workers. The announcement was made to New Belgium staff on May 18.
New Belgium, which also had its CEO surprisingly step down in November, is the fourth largest craft brewer in the country and the largest

USA, KY: Braxton Brewing Co. sets opening date for second location
|
Covington's Braxton Brewing Co. has set an opening date for its second location, which will focus on innovation and experimental styles of beer, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported on May 18.
Braxton Labs, in the former Ei8ht Ball Brewing space in the Party Source in Bellevue, is hosting a grand opening party May 26. The party will unveil the first brews to come out of the innovation lab, as well as music from the Kentucky Struts and food by Cheese N Chong.
Braxton Labs is a 1,500-barrel facility that exists to push the envelope of craft beer innovation and flavor. The lab will allow the brewery to try new things, like sours or barrel aging or anything off-the-wall its team can come up with, while allowing the home base to play the hits.
"When our leadership team sat down to discuss a future where we had nearly 2,000 barrels of capacity to dedicate solely to innovation, every aspect of the company was thrilled,” Jake Rouse, co-founder and CEO, said in a news release. “This space will be home to beers that are both on and off trend, educational experiments for the curious craft beer drinker, collaborations across multiple categories, and so much more.

USA, TX: Great Heights Brewing Company joining Houston’s craft beer scene
|
Space City's craft beer scene will be getting even larger this August with the opening of Great Heights Brewing Company, Chron.com reported on May 17.
The upcoming brewery and tap room will open in Oak Forest, a location co-founder Sean Bednarz said is rapidly turning into a great beer scene.
"Houston has been fortunate to have Saint Arnold for the last twenty three years, but the broader beer scene is really just now coming of age," said Bednarz. "This is mostly due to legislative changes in 2013 that have allowed breweries to sell beer directly to customers in their taprooms."
Bednarz mentioned Brash Brewing and Eureka Heights Brewing Company as two examples of great, new breweries that have recently opened thanks to the brewery-to-customer legislation.
As for Bednarz's own brewery, the University of Texas at Austin alumnus said his goals for the destination are to be neighborhood taproom.
"We've built out a comfortable air-conditioned taproom that accommodates seventy five people and we plan to add a patio in the near future," Bednarz said. "There will be a variety of taproom-only offerings that will rotate throughout the year to keep things interesting for our patrons."
"That said, our 15-barrel brewhouse provides plenty of capacity for distribution,"

USA, CA: Urban Roots Brewing aims at opening in Sacramento by next February
|
A former blueprint production facility south of downtown Sacramento would become a craft brewery and smokehouse restaurant, under a proposal filed with the city, the Sacramento Business Journal reported on May 19.
Urban Roots Brewing would occupy a 17,000-square-foot site at 1322 V St., formerly Brownie’s Documat. Though a craft brewery in an industrial building is increasingly commonplace, it’s not on the scale the people behind Urban Roots are envisioning, said project applicant Craig Hausman of Hausman Architecture.
The new site will have a dedicated room for barrel-aging particular beers in addition to a full brewery. And a parking lot at 14th and V streets will be converted into a patio.
Brewer Peter Hoey and Rob Archie of Pangaea Bier Cafe in Sacramento are heading up the project, Hausman said.
Though the application lists the building’s construction year as 1946, parts of it are decades older, Hausman said. Hausman Architects is working with Buehler & Buehler Structural Engineers Inc. to determine what work needs to be done and what can be left in place.
“Old buildings especially, when you have to do reinforced masonry it throws a wrench in,” Hausman said. But advice from Buehler & Buehler helped Hausman determine some parts of the building
