Scientific Digest

HALLERTAU MITTELFRUEH WANTS TO BREATHE!

ABSTRACT
For years we have learned in university that oxygen is the enemy of beer and hops, but maybe it isn't in all cases. US researchers did dry-hopping trials with Hallertau Mittelfrueh that was oxidised (2 weeks at 38 degrees Celcius with oxygen) at two levels of hopping (1.5g/L and 3.8g/L). The impact on the lower hopping rate was not so significant, but with the higher hopping rate, the beer was rated more citrusy, floral, herbal and spicy in comparison to the same beer with non-oxidised hops. There was no huge difference in preferences either... So if you brew with Hallertau Mittelfrueh, let it breathe once in a while.

Brewery news India: The Enforcement Directorate takes possession of Vijay Mallya’s stake in United Breweries
The Enforcement Directorate has taken possession of liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s stake in United Breweries and also stakes in other listed companies, a senior ED official told Moneycontrol.

Labelled a willful defaulter by banks, Mallya owes lenders Rs 8,191 crore as of December 31, 2016, according to a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

Mallya owns around 8 percent directly in United Breweries and another 22 percent through privately held firms. Mallya also directly owns around 7 percent in United Breweries Holdings, and also shares in United Spirits.

In the case of United Breweries, nearly the entire direct holding and a little over a quarter of the indirectly held stake is pledged with banks.

According to a report in a business daily, Heineken had recently approached the banks with a proposal to buy out all of Mallya’s United Breweries shares pledged with them. Heineken owns a little over 43 percent in United Breweries, which makes the Kingfisher brand of beer.

The Dutch beer giant has been looking to hike stake in UB for a while now.

With the ED now taking possession of Mallya’s stake in United Breweries, Heineken cannot increase its stake in the company by ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Belgian beer officially gains UNESCO World Heritage status
Belgian beer is drinking to its recent success. The UNESCO representative in Brussels, Paolo Fontani, on May 19 gave to ministers having responsibility for culture in Belgium a certificate attesting to recognition of the production of Belgian beer. As a consequence, this is now considered to have UNESCO intangible cultural world heritage status, The Brussels Times reported.

An official ceremony took place in the Brussels Town Hall. Present were Alda Greoli (of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation), Isabelle Weykmans (of the German-speaking community) and Sven Gatz (from the Flemish community).

All participants stressed the strong collaboration upon this issue of these three Belgian communities. UNESCO made its official decision on November 30th last year.

The nomination of Belgian beer had been launched two years ago, by the intervention of the German-speaking community. This thus avoided the long queue of applications, which the nomination would have stuck in if it had been introduced by Belgium as a nation.

The Belgian request was backed up by the entire brewing sector: the Belgian Brewers association, professional brewers and tasters, and industry training institutions.

Those who wrote the UNESCO application say that it is the unmatched diversity of the art of Belgian brewing and the intensity of the actual ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Lotte Liquor to release new line of beer
Lotte Liquor said on May 24 that it would be releasing a new line of beer on June 1, in the hope of finding growth in a stagnant domestic beer market, The Korea Herald reported.

“The beer market in Korea has been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.9 percent between 2014 and 2016, but much of that growth has been fuelled by imported beers,” said Baek Seung-sun, head of marketing for the new Fitz Super Clear beer, at a press conference at Lotte Hotel World in southern Seoul on May 24.

Fitz, the second line of original beers from Lotte Liquor following premium beer brand Kloud, hopes to break preconceptions that Korean beers are bland and tasteless, and fuel sales in the low-cost standard beer market.

“The beer was developed with the concept of being ‘clear,’ of being light and having a clean aftertaste,” explained Vice Chairman Lee Jae-hyuk, who heads Lotte Group’s food business unit. “Many other beers have tried to create a dry taste, but we wanted something clear. A beer that starts rich, but immediately clears up and leaves the original taste to the last drop.”

To create this fresh aftertaste, Fitz was created with German Herkules hop ...More info on site

Whisky news USA: Constellation Brands offers to buy Jack Daniel's owner - report
Constellation Brands Inc, maker of Corona and Modelo beers, has offered to buy Jack Daniel's owner Brown-Forman Corp, CNBC reported on May 23, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

Brown-Forman is not interested in selling, but has informed the board of Constellation Brands' interest, the report said, citing sources.

Shares of Brown-Forman, which has a market cap of about $22 billion, fell 3.8 percent to $54.93 in late afternoon trading on May 23. Constellation slipped 1.3 percent to $181.72.

The Brown family, fifth-generation owners of Brown-Forman, control a majority of voting shares and have historically indicated that they do not want to sell the company, according to the report.

Brown-Forman declined to comment, while Constellation Brands said it was company policy to not comment on rumors or speculation regarding any transaction.

Jack Daniel's is a brand of Tennessee whiskey and the top selling American whiskey in the world.
