HALLERTAU MITTELFRUEH WANTS TO BREATHE!

ABSTRACT
For years we have learned in university that oxygen is the enemy of beer and hops, but maybe it isn't in all cases. US researchers did dry-hopping trials with Hallertau Mittelfrueh that was oxidised (2 weeks at 38 degrees Celcius with oxygen) at two levels of hopping (1.5g/L and 3.8g/L). The impact on the lower hopping rate was not so significant, but with the higher hopping rate, the beer was rated more citrusy, floral, herbal and spicy in comparison to the same beer with non-oxidised hops. There was no huge difference in preferences either... So if you brew with Hallertau Mittelfrueh, let it breathe once in a while.

Whisky news USA: Constellation Brands offers to buy Jack Daniel's owner - report
Constellation Brands Inc, maker of Corona and Modelo beers, has offered to buy Jack Daniel's owner Brown-Forman Corp, CNBC reported on May 23, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

Brown-Forman is not interested in selling, but has informed the board of Constellation Brands' interest, the report said, citing sources.

Shares of Brown-Forman, which has a market cap of about $22 billion, fell 3.8 percent to $54.93 in late afternoon trading on May 23. Constellation slipped 1.3 percent to $181.72.

The Brown family, fifth-generation owners of Brown-Forman, control a majority of voting shares and have historically indicated that they do not want to sell the company, according to the report.

Brown-Forman declined to comment, while Constellation Brands said it was company policy to not comment on rumors or speculation regarding any transaction.

Jack Daniel's is a brand of Tennessee whiskey and the top selling American whiskey in the world.

Brewery news USA, MI: Michigan’s beer industry worth $10.5 bln to the state in 2016
Michigan's beer industry is worth $10.5 billion to the state, according to a new national report that looked at employment and wages in 2016.

That's up from $6.64 billion two years ago, according to the same study from 2014.

About 34,390 jobs in Michigan are directly tied to beer, whether through brewing, wholesale or in retailing.

Those employees earn a combined $941,748,800, according to the report by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute.

And another 14,134 people are employed in Michigan as suppliers to the beer industry, generating another $851 million in wages.

Meanwhile, taxes paid by consumers and businesses totaled a combined $1.49 billion in Michigan in 2016.

"This new data shows that Michigan's beer industry is flourishing," said Spencer Nevins, president of the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association, in a news release.

He added: "(O)ur state is a top five beer producer in the country."

While overall numbers show an increased economic impact from beer in Michigan, a closer look at the 2014 numbers show changes:

Brewing employment in Michigan grew 81 percent over two years to 2,093.

Wholesaling employment grew 12 percent to 4,752.

Retailing jobs dropped 8.6 percent to 27,545.

"Beer is still growing in Michigan," said Scott Graham, executive director of Michigan Brewers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Mad Knight Brewing Co. now open in St. Elmo
St. Elmo has a new neighborhood taproom and brewery, Nooga.com reported on May 19.

"We are St. Elmo people," Mad Knight Brewing Co. co-owner Connor Choate said. "We want to have a great name in Chattanooga and a positive outreach throughout, but we are focused on our neighborhood. We want to be a neighborhood brewery."

Mad Knight opened recently in the basement of a former K-Ration packaging facility at 4015 Tennessee Ave.

Choate started homebrewing before he was old enough to legally drink, and after growing up in Chattanooga, he moved back here last December to open the business.

He's worked a full-time construction job to support his family and help fund the business, he said.

"This is truly a labor of love," said Choate, who has been brewing beer for more than four years. "There are some great beers being made in Chattanooga, and we're excited to join the ranks with our own offerings."

The brewery's flagship beers are the Big Boss Man, a fruit-forward pale ale, and the Crazy Otto, a saison.

The business will also feature several other taps serving four rotating seasonal beers.

The products have an average alcohol by volume of about 5 percent per beer.

"Our beers are different; ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Wooden Hill Brewing Company expected to open in Edina this fall
Two brothers—one a nanotechnology scientist, the other an entrepreneur with degrees in biology and medicine—are starting a brewery and taproom project in Edina, Minnesota, called Wooden Hill Brewing Company, The Growler reported on May 23.

James and Sean Ewen are currently working to transform the space at 7421 Bush Lake Road into the city’s first production brewery and taproom. Originally, the building the Ewens leased was only 4,755 square feet, but a move by a neighboring tenant allowed the brewery to lease an adjacent unit to increase their space to 9,000 square feet. The extra room will allow the Ewens to add a kitchen to service the taproom and will give them the opportunity to expand brewing operations at their current location in the future.

Wooden Hill’s brewery will be equipped with a 10-barrel brewhouse, three 20-barrel fermenters, and three 20-barrel brite tanks from Rocky Mountain Vessels, slated for delivery this June. Initially, the Ewens will focus on producing beer to serve at the taproom, with distribution down the road. The brewery is expected to open to the public this fall.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Prince Eddy’s Brewing launched in Prince Edward County
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a new “surf-inspired” brewery has opened just outside of Picton in Prince Edward County.

Prince Eddy’s Brewing has been launched by Aaron McKinney, and features “a two-story tap room, patio, retail store with growlers, [and] a 23 hectolitre brewhouse.”

Located at 13 McSteven Road, Prince Eddy’s held opened on May 20th with debut brand El Shaka Pale Ale. Upcoming beers include Chin Dropper Blonde Ale, Fresh Coast IPA, and Milk Shaka Stout.

Brewery news USA, WA: Bent Bine Brew Co. finally serving up beers in Belfair
Bent Bine Brew Co. is finally serving up beers in Belfair, Kitsap Sun reported on May 19.

The much-anticipated Highway 3 brewery opened May 12 with a limited, three-day-a-week schedule.

Tim Masbruch, who founded Bent Bine with his brother Tod, said the business was warmly welcomed. It is, after all, the only microbrewery in Mason County.

"We've been at capacity a couple of nights," Masbruch said.

The tasting room features six Bent Bine beers on tap, including a signature IPA, a citrusy pale ale and a dark take on an Irish red. Outdoor seating is available.

Bent Bine's full 10-barrel brewhouse was recently delivered. The brewery will expand its hours — and beer production — once the "miles of tubing and wiring" have been installed, Masbruch said. That will take about a month.

For now the Bent Bine brewers are working with a much smaller pilot system. The brewery is currently open from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday at 23297 Highway 3 NE in Belfair Landing.

Brewery news USA, NH: Loaded Question Brewing Company to become Portsmouth West End’s third new brewery in a year
Down a hallway, in the back of an old industrial building, Tom Bath is knocking down walls to prepare for construction of Portsmouth West End’s third new brewery in a year, Seacostonline.com reported on May 19.

A 22-year brewer, Bath moved to Portsmouth from Seattle for a job change three years ago and found it “a bad fit.” He and his wife just bought a house and had a baby, when she suggested he open a brewery.

Now Bath has a lease for a 2,300-square-foot space at 909 Islington St. The brewing equipment is on order and Winter Holben Architecture and Design has drawn floor plans for Bath’s “Loaded Question Brewing Company,” which he hopes will be open in time for the Button Factory open studios in December.

Bath said the space reminds him of a secret speakeasy.

There will be views of greenery and railroad tracks through arched windows in the rear of the tasting room. The brew house will be in a side room, a walk-in cooler will take center stage and there will be seating for about 40. A small kitchen will be added for preparing small dishes.

The name of Bath’s brewery comes from a question he’s often asked while drinking ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Mancos Brewing Co. to open for business on May 25
Mancos Brewing Co. opens for business on May 25 at its new location, and brewer DeWayne Jackson anticipates being able to make a lot more beer, The Journal reported on May 23.

“We’ll be able to increase our daily production at least fivefold,” he said.

Jackson has filled the new space, at 484 E. Frontage Road, Mancos with a new seven-barrel brewing system. At the original brewery location, he only had a single-barrel system.

The brewery includes more seating than the old location, including a bar with about a dozen seats and a room with a pool table. Outside, there will be patio seating with a horseshoe pit. Jackson, along with co-owner Kathy Hands, plans to add a stage both inside and outside for music performances.

“We’re really excited,” Hands said.

They’ll be open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Hands said.

Jackson said he plans to expand from six house beers to eight over the summer, including adding the Bear Track Brown ale to the year-round lineup. Another new addition will be Double Dizzy Blonde, a higher-alcohol version of the brewery’s blonde ale.

He plans to experiment with dozens of new recipes, putting wood-aged beers on tap and debuting new variations of beers he’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Purgatory Beer Co. licensed for brewing in Linwood Mill
Massachusetts has 180 breweries in production, or soon to be in production, Kevin Mulvehill, co-owner of Purgatory Beer Co. told selectmen on May 22. “And we are yours,” he said. “We’re the Blackstone Valley’s brewing company.”

Selectmen voted unanimously to approve Purgatory Beer Co.’s applications for a farmer series pouring permit and a common victualler license, the Worcester Telegram reports.

Mr. Mulvehill and his business partner, Brian DiStefano, said the brewery’s 2,400-square-foot indoor space and 367-square-foot outdoor patio, located in the Linwood Mill complex at 670 Linwood Ave., Building C, will house brewing facilities and retail customer serving areas for ale and fresh beer.

As a nano-brewery, the beer is brewed in batches of 100 gallons or less, which the owners anticipate won’t last more than two weeks. And because the business has a state farm brewer license, it has to use some ingredients from within Massachusetts.

Mr. Mulvehill and Mr. DiStefano said they were talking to local restaurateurs at Maison de Manger, also at the Linwood Mill, and UxLocale, on Hartford Avenue West in Uxbridge, to bring in locally made snacks, such as Bavarian pretzels.

The brewery can sell growlers and kegs for off-site consumption, but Mr. Mulvehill said they were seeking the pouring ...More info on site

Brewery news India: The Enforcement Directorate takes possession of Vijay Mallya’s stake in United Breweries
The Enforcement Directorate has taken possession of liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s stake in United Breweries and also stakes in other listed companies, a senior ED official told Moneycontrol.

Labelled a willful defaulter by banks, Mallya owes lenders Rs 8,191 crore as of December 31, 2016, according to a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

Mallya owns around 8 percent directly in United Breweries and another 22 percent through privately held firms. Mallya also directly owns around 7 percent in United Breweries Holdings, and also shares in United Spirits.

In the case of United Breweries, nearly the entire direct holding and a little over a quarter of the indirectly held stake is pledged with banks.

According to a report in a business daily, Heineken had recently approached the banks with a proposal to buy out all of Mallya’s United Breweries shares pledged with them. Heineken owns a little over 43 percent in United Breweries, which makes the Kingfisher brand of beer.

The Dutch beer giant has been looking to hike stake in UB for a while now.

With the ED now taking possession of Mallya’s stake in United Breweries, Heineken cannot increase its stake in the company by ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Belgian beer officially gains UNESCO World Heritage status
Belgian beer is drinking to its recent success. The UNESCO representative in Brussels, Paolo Fontani, on May 19 gave to ministers having responsibility for culture in Belgium a certificate attesting to recognition of the production of Belgian beer. As a consequence, this is now considered to have UNESCO intangible cultural world heritage status, The Brussels Times reported.

An official ceremony took place in the Brussels Town Hall. Present were Alda Greoli (of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation), Isabelle Weykmans (of the German-speaking community) and Sven Gatz (from the Flemish community).

All participants stressed the strong collaboration upon this issue of these three Belgian communities. UNESCO made its official decision on November 30th last year.

The nomination of Belgian beer had been launched two years ago, by the intervention of the German-speaking community. This thus avoided the long queue of applications, which the nomination would have stuck in if it had been introduced by Belgium as a nation.

The Belgian request was backed up by the entire brewing sector: the Belgian Brewers association, professional brewers and tasters, and industry training institutions.

Those who wrote the UNESCO application say that it is the unmatched diversity of the art of Belgian brewing and the intensity of the actual ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Lotte Liquor to release new line of beer
Lotte Liquor said on May 24 that it would be releasing a new line of beer on June 1, in the hope of finding growth in a stagnant domestic beer market, The Korea Herald reported.

“The beer market in Korea has been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.9 percent between 2014 and 2016, but much of that growth has been fuelled by imported beers,” said Baek Seung-sun, head of marketing for the new Fitz Super Clear beer, at a press conference at Lotte Hotel World in southern Seoul on May 24.

Fitz, the second line of original beers from Lotte Liquor following premium beer brand Kloud, hopes to break preconceptions that Korean beers are bland and tasteless, and fuel sales in the low-cost standard beer market.

“The beer was developed with the concept of being ‘clear,’ of being light and having a clean aftertaste,” explained Vice Chairman Lee Jae-hyuk, who heads Lotte Group’s food business unit. “Many other beers have tried to create a dry taste, but we wanted something clear. A beer that starts rich, but immediately clears up and leaves the original taste to the last drop.”

To create this fresh aftertaste, Fitz was created with German Herkules hop ...More info on site
