HALLERTAU MITTELFRUEH WANTS
TO BREATHE!
ABSTRACT
For years we have learned in university that oxygen
is the enemy of beer and hops, but maybe it isn't in
all cases. US researchers did dry-hopping trials
with Hallertau Mittelfrueh that was oxidised (2 weeks
at 38 degrees Celcius with oxygen) at two levels of hopping (1.5g/L
and 3.8g/L). The impact on the lower hopping rate was
not so significant, but with the higher hopping rate, the
beer was rated more citrusy, floral, herbal and spicy in
comparison to the same beer with non-oxidised hops.
There was no huge difference in preferences either... So
if you brew with Hallertau Mittelfrueh, let it breathe once
in a while.

UK: Spring barley variety Laureate fully approved for brewing and malt distilling use
|
Spring barley variety Laureate has been given full approval for brewing and malt distilling use and Sienna and KWS Sassy have been given full approval for malt distilling use, following the spring meeting of the Maltsters Association of Great Britain (MAGB) malting barley committee, FG Insight reported on May 24.
Craft has been promoted to provisional approval 2 for brewing and Fairing has been promoted to provisional approval 2 for grain distilling. Chanson has been given provisional approval 1 for brewing, says MAGB.
Belgravia has been removed from the list for malt distilling and Olympus has been removed from the list (provisional approval 2) for grain distilling.
MAGB says that the award of full or provisional approval to a variety does not infer immediate acceptance for use by all malting, brewing and distilling companies. “Growers are advised to seek further information from their customers before sowing newly listed varieties,” it advises.
Full approval status in the brewing and distilling markets sees Laureate become the highest-yielding spring barley on the current AHDB Recommended List, says Syngenta seeds and seedcare campaign manager, Mark Bullen.
“Recent years have seen a yield gap between varieties for brewing and varieties for distilling,” he says. “The industry

Ireland: Diageo’s planned €25 million distillery gets green light
|
Diageo has been given the planning go-ahead to construct a new €25 million distillery at St. James's Gate for its premium blended Irish whiskey, Roe & Co, which was launched earlier this year, Hospitality Ireland reported on May 25.
According to the Irish Independent, construction of the new distillery is scheduled to commence in early 2019, meaning that its first batch of whiskey should hit shelves sometime in 2022.
Plans have also been approved to implement a new visitor experience at the former Guinness Power House on Thomas Street, which will be a celebration of both the Roe & Co brand and the revival of craft brewing in Dublin.
Diageo is hoping that the new attraction will bring in at least 50,000 visitors per year.
