HALLERTAU MITTELFRUEH WANTS TO BREATHE!

ABSTRACT
For years we have learned in university that oxygen is the enemy of beer and hops, but maybe it isn't in all cases. US researchers did dry-hopping trials with Hallertau Mittelfrueh that was oxidised (2 weeks at 38 degrees Celcius with oxygen) at two levels of hopping (1.5g/L and 3.8g/L). The impact on the lower hopping rate was not so significant, but with the higher hopping rate, the beer was rated more citrusy, floral, herbal and spicy in comparison to the same beer with non-oxidised hops. There was no huge difference in preferences either... So if you brew with Hallertau Mittelfrueh, let it breathe once in a while.

Brewery news USA: Bar management software BevSpot posts list of most popular beers in 2016
BevSpot, a bar management software platform, has been adopted by hundreds of bars and restaurants across 46 US states and a few international markets, allowing them ease of controlling inventory, ordering, invoicing, and sales data. The Boston-based company published a list of the most popular beers at the end of 2016, according to its distributor order data and what has sold best on BevSpot; here are the top 10.

10. Lagunitas

Founded in 1993, the Californian Lagunitas Brewing Company has become well-known for its ironic takes on more traditional types of beer, plus the convoluted tales it prints on its packaging. As of 2014 it was the fifth best-selling craft brewery in America, and has also been one of the fastest-growing since the mid-noughties. Thanks to its massive expansion in recent years, with millions being poured into growing its brewing capacity and many new sites being constructed, Heineken took notice in 2015 and acquired a 50 percent stake. While this means that Lagunitas can no longer be classified as a ‘craft’ brewer, it also means a far greater global impact.

Brewery news USA, TX: Infamous Brewing Company purchasing Solid Rock Brewing
Infamous Brewing Company, 4602 Weletka Dr., Austin, is in the process of purchasing Solid Rock Brewing, 2214 Bee Creek Road, Spicewood, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on May 26 citing Infamous owner Josh Horowitz.

The Hudson Bend-based brewery, founded in March 2013, features Hijack, a cream ale; IPA, an India pale ale with a hoppy flavor; Bugsy, an amber beer; and Sweep the Leg, a peanut butter stout.

“Infamous took control of operations at Solid Rock in March,” he said. “Currently, we are only brewing Infamous beers there. We will be resurrecting the Solid Rock brand but, for now, we are focusing on getting our brands out the door.”

Solid Rock, founded in 2011 by Steve Jones, Stephen McCarthy and Curt Webber, featured Big Drought Stout, a dark stout; Cho’Sen, a hybrid ale; Cornerstone, a cream ale; Dauntless, an IPA; and Roundhead Red, an Irish red ale.

Horowitz said the demand on Infamous beers is “so enormous” that he undertook a lease-to-own situation at the brewing facilities of Solid Rock.

Until the lease situation with Solid Rock evolved, Infamous rented space in a Dallas-area brewery to add production capability.

“We will be negotiating a formal purchase agreement [with Solid Rock] in the near future,” he said.

SwitchGear Brewing is now open in Elkhart Lake, bringing a craft brewery and taproom to the community, The Sheboygan Press reported.

SwitchGear Brewing was conceived over the past several years by a group of friends and co-workers at Masters Gallery Foods. The passionate ownership team consists of Nick Kullmann, with primary expertise in brewing, Ryan Feldmann, with primary talent in sales, and Mark Grasse, with primary experience in operations. All three will continue their roles at Masters Gallery.

“The name SwitchGear carries a number of origins for our team, including motor vehicle enthusiasts,” Grasse said. “But more than everything, it points to our mutual passion for brewing.”

The brewery is located within the Feedmill Shops at Elkhart Lake, and suitable to the SwitchGear name, strategically located at the start-finish line for the old Elkhart Lake racing course. The brewery features a new three-barrel system designed to accommodate future growth plans that may include wholesale distribution.

The brewery’s focus is on creating quality beers to excite a wide range of enthusiasts.

“We will certainly please a broad-based group of customers with Bourbon Barrel Stouts, Red Ales, Various IPA’s, Nut Browns, Smash Pale Ales, just to name a few,” Kullmann said. “Our brands also ...More info on site

After a year of renovating its leased space, Epicure Brewing will open its doors June 8 at 40 Franklin St., the former Norwich Bulletin production room space. Unlike other downtown pubs, including These Guys Brewing a few doors up the street at 78 Franklin St., Epicure won't serve food, theday.com reported on May 26.

Menus from downtown Norwich restaurants will be on hand at Epicure, and the six-member ownership team will invite customers to bring food to the 100-seat taproom lounge as they try signature brews with colorful and meaningful names.

Brewery news USA, VA: Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery to open new production brewery in Lynchburg
Goochland is starting to drink in its share of the craft beer industry.

On May 26, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery announced a new brewery that will cost approximately $14 million and create 59 new jobs over the next three years, in Lynchburg, wtvr.com reported on May 26.

The company will open a new production brewery in Lynchburg to complement its current facility in Goochland, which will undergo a major expansion complete with a 50,000-square-foot production brewery that will house a state-of-the-art brewing system and packaging line.

Since 2013, Lickinghole Creek has built a strong reputation for its award-winning beers and its use of locally grown ingredients, some grown on their 290-acre farm in Goochland.

In Lynchburg, the company will build an innovative brewery focused on sour beer production and barrel-aged brews. Lickinghole Creek will be the anchor tenant of a new retail and restaurant facility in the middle of the downtown area undergoing revitalization.

The expansion is Goochland will allow a substantial increase in production, the introduction of a lagered-beer program, and a large new tap room and event space.

Brewery news USA, CO & Canada: Fort Collins Brewery purchased by Canadian Red Truck Beer Co.
Fort Collins Brewery has been sold and its products will fade out this summer, The Coloradoan reported on May 27.

Canadian craft brewery Red Truck Beer Co. has purchased the 35,000 square-foot 1020 Lincoln Ave. facility to start U.S. operations.

The Vancouver-based Red Truck plans to obtain its federal brewing license by the end of the year and open a new brewpub called Truck Stop in the Fort Collins space in spring of 2018. RB+B Architects are working on the renovations.

“We could see that Fort Collins was the epicenter for first class brewing in the U.S.," said Red Truck founder Mark James in a press release. "There is an amazing community of brewers and connoisseurs here and we are excited to become a part of the community.”

Red Truck, which debuted in 2005, currently produces about 20,000 barrels annually that are distributed to Canadian provinces British Columbia, Alberta as well as the state of Washington.

Red Truck Lager, Red Truck Ale and Red Truck IPA are the brewery's flagship offerings. Red Truck Golden ale, Blackberry Bourbon ale, Northwest strong ale, Ryzenshein kettle sour gose and Lemon Curacao Smash IPA are some of the other beers produced.

Brewery news USA, MO: Charleville Brewing Co. & Tavern now open in St. Louis
Charleville Brewing Co. & Tavern is now open at 2101 Chouteau Avenue in Downtown West in St Louis. The brewpub is a partnership between Ste. Genevieve's Charleville Vineyard, Winery & Microbrewery and Paul and Wendy Hamilton, the restaurateurs behind Eleven Eleven Mississippi, Vin de Set and PW Pizza, STLToday.com reported on May 26.

“Finally getting the liquor license was the moment I allowed myself to get excited,” Charleville director of operations Tait Russell tells Off the Menu.

Last October, when Russell first spoke to Off the Menu about the project, he said, “The whole idea is to connect with the (St. Louis) community.”

Now that members of the St. Louis community are actually sitting in the brewpub, drinking Charleville beer, he says, “It's a little surreal.”

Charleville has relocated its 7-barrel brewing system from Ste. Genevieve to the new brewpub. (Ste. Genevieve boasts a 30-barrel brewhouse.) Russell says the system should be ready to brew its first batch in the next couple of weeks.

While Charleville tends to the beer, the Hamiltons oversee the food, with chef Ryan Luke heading the kitchen.

“We're calling it upscale tavern food,” Russell says. “Comfort food with a little Southern feel.”

Appetizers include beer-brined fried wings, fried chicken livers and a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Copper State Brewing Co. opening on June 1
In two days, Copper State Brewing Co. will hold its grand opening in downtown Green Bay, wbay.com reported on May 30.

After taking over the old Hinterland Brewery back in April, new owner Gregg Mattek knew they had some work cut out for them.

“We knew that people would always remember this as hinterland because they did a good job her and it was a great experience so we had to figure out how to capitalize on that and grow from there,” said Mattek.

In just two short months, they demolished walls, expanded the brew house and redesigned the building to make it their own.

“Folks who have been through Hinterland before will be shocked at sort of how we opened it up and took advantage of the great natural light we have with the windows here,” said Mattek.

Unlike traditional breweries, Copper State will open pretty early to serve its iconic Copper Rock Coffee Company.

“The coffee shop will be open as of 6 am. We will open our bar at 11 am so people that want to come in and grab lunch from the coffee shop can stop over at the bar for a beer,” said Mattek.

Mattek said you can’t have a coffee shop ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Heineken may be willing to buy the rest of Desnoes & Geddes Limited shares
Heineken International now controls nearly 96 per cent of Desnoes & Geddes Limited, which trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, but may be willing to buy up the rest, Jamaica Gleaner reported on May 28.

The directors of Desnoes & Geddes are now telling minority shareholders, who may want to sell shares, to contact law firm DunnCox, which represents Heineken.

Nearly $3 billion worth of D&G shares remain outside of the direct control of Heineken, according to Gleaner Business estimates based on the number of units in the hands of minority shareholders and the acquisition price of the stock in its final month prior to delisting.

Heineken in late 2015 acquired D&G for US$0.259 per share or roughly $30 per share. The stock continued to trade on the Jamaican exchange until its delisting at the end of March 2016, at which time the price had fallen to $24 per share.

"The offer would not be the same price as the original offer," said D&G company secretary Gene Douglas at the beer maker's annual general meeting on May 25 at Red Stripe's headquarters in Kingston.

"So would the price be going up or down?" asked a shareholder, to no avail.

"We don't know. I cannot speak for Heineken," ...More info on site
