HALLERTAU MITTELFRUEH WANTS
TO BREATHE!
ABSTRACT
For years we have learned in university that oxygen
is the enemy of beer and hops, but maybe it isn't in
all cases. US researchers did dry-hopping trials
with Hallertau Mittelfrueh that was oxidised (2 weeks
at 38 degrees Celcius with oxygen) at two levels of hopping (1.5g/L
and 3.8g/L). The impact on the lower hopping rate was
not so significant, but with the higher hopping rate, the
beer was rated more citrusy, floral, herbal and spicy in
comparison to the same beer with non-oxidised hops.
There was no huge difference in preferences either... So
if you brew with Hallertau Mittelfrueh, let it breathe once
in a while.

Canada & USA: Barley area lower in both countries
|
U.S. maltsters contracted lower malting barley volumes for this year, so farmers planted less barley, especially in North Dakota, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported.
In Canada, feed barley markets came under pressure from low-quality feed wheat, farmers reacted and planted less barley this year. Much unharvested grain of crop 2016 is still in the fields and will probably not be combined at all. Very bad late winter conditions delayed most barley planting till the middle of May, 14 days later than average. However, Canadian farmers have shown in past years that they can withstand poor conditions and still harvest fair to good crops.

USA & Mexico: Brewing team emphasizes NAFTA importance for US barley
|
Beer is Mexico’s top agricultural export to the United States. And Mexico purchases more U.S. barley to brew that beer than from any other market.
A team of Mexican brewing industry leaders is traveling in North Dakota and Montana this week to call attention to the policy that made this mutually beneficial trading relationship possible – the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), KTIC reported on June 1.
The team – organized by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC), the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee and the North Dakota Barley Council – includes representatives from internationally recognizable beer brands as well as Mexico’s largest craft breweries and industry representatives.
“We welcome our guests and customers to the heart of barley country,” said Kimberly Atkins, USGC vice president and chief operating officer. “NAFTA is critical to the U.S. barley industry’s success and an important story of interdependence to share with our farmers and agricultural industry here at home.”
The terms of NAFTA allow U.S. barley and malt to enter Mexico duty-free, providing a competitive advantage that has fostered an increased integration of the value chains for U.S. barley and malt and Mexican brewing industries.
Mexico purchased more than 680,000 metric tons (31.2 million bushels) of barley valued
