A MATURED HOP EXTRACT AS
MEDICINAL ELIXIR?
ABSTRACT
To conserve alpha and oil in hop pellets, we do
everything we can - but maybe this is not always
necessary, especially in regard to medicinal value!
Studies have demonstrated that the consumption of
iso-alpha acids helps to reduce obesity, and now these
Japanese researchers have shown the same effect for
oxidised bitter acids, e.g. humulinones, hulupones, and
tricyclooxyisohumulones. In this study, hop pellets
were stored at 60 degrees Celsius for two days and subsequently
extracted for medicinal trials. They were able to show
that the addition of 0.2% of this extract to a high fat
diet induced fat burning leading to body fat reduction.

Hungary: Heineken restructuring its Hungarian operations
|
Brewer Heineken Hungary’s manufacturing operations will cease at its Martfű plant in the next twelve months and the site will gradually be transformed into a distribution and logistics center, Hungarian online news portal index.hu reported on July 10.
At the same time, manufacturing capacity will be expanded in Sopron, and staff numbers will be increased further. Heineken told index.hu it was still unsure how many people would be affected from the Martfű staff of 50.
However, Heineken said it is committed to offer people alternative employment opportunities in Sopron or Martfű after the conversion, index.hu reported.
The current reorganization is part of a HUF 1.8 billion development in Hungary that the company started in 2015, index.hu recalled.

Australia: Lion denies reports of planned closure of the Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Queensland
|
Lion has denied union claims that it is planning to end the production of XXXX in Queensland by closing the Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Milton, The Shout reported on July 12.
In an interview with AAP, United Voice coordinator Damien Davie said that management from Lion’s parent company, Kirin Holdings in Japan, had told staff in June that the Milton brewery would be shut down.
Davie said that workers at the plant had been threatened that if negotiations to bring in labour-hire, part-time and casual positions and scrap full-time jobs were unsuccessful then the plant would close.
“The continued push to bring in labour-hire employees and casualise the workforce is the main reason cited by management when threatening workers with closing the plant,” Davie told AAP.
However Lion has said that the claims are false and has pointed to on-going recruitment at the facility.
“These recent claims are false; we are actually hiring five more permanent people right now,” a Lion spokesperson said.
“There are no job losses. In fact, there will be pay offers on the table – on top of the best pay and work conditions in brewing in Queensland.”

UK: UK’s Society of Independent Brewers calls for greater clarity over true craft beer
|
The UK’s Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has called for “greater clarity” over the true craft credentials of brewers, following a multitude of buyouts of previously independent craft brewers by multinational brewers, The Drinks Business reported on July 11.
As the craft beer category has grown, so too has interest in its brewers by large global companies eager to get a slice of its success. Most recently, London Fields Brewers was bought by Carlsberg in a deal worth £1 billion, following similar deals that saw AB InBev snap up Camden Town Brewery for £85 mln in 2015 and Japanese brewer Asahi acquire Meantime in 2016.
While the success of small brands growing into larger companies is commendable, it has led to increasing confusion over the term ‘craft’, with brands typically thought of as ‘craft’ due to their independent nature and small production sharing the term with huge global brewers.

Estonia: Craft brewers not planning to raise prices following excise hike
|
Estonia’s small breweries, with a market share of about one percent, are not planning to raise their prices following the entering into force of higher excise duties on beer.
While the large producers such as Saku and A. Le Coq are complaining about the excise hike and have noticeably raised the price of their products, plenty of smaller breweries are profiting from the situation, writes daily Postimees.
A great advantage is the fact that breweries that produce less than 600,000 litres of beer a year pay only half of the excise rate. This alone will allow them to keep their current prices, or raise them only marginally.
“We’re trying to compensate for the higher excise rate by producing more efficiently, and at the expense of the business’ profits. Here the production volume matters, which reduces the price per unit once it goes past a certain point,” Jaanis Tammela of the Tanker brewery told the paper.
Põhjala’s Enn Parel said the same, confirming that small producers can swallow the excise hike and make up for it by adjusting production.

India: Supreme Court defers case against Vijay Mallya
|
India’s Supreme Court on Monday, July 10 deferred hearing a case filed by banks seeking contempt action against Vijay Mallya, promoter of the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, for allegedly not making a full and fair disclosure of all his assets at home and abroad as ordered by the court, The Economic Times reported.
The top court had, at the previous hearing on May 9, asked Mallya to appear before it personally and explain. But he was absent when the court convened on July 10.
Lawyer for the banks, Robin Ratnakar David, suggested that the case be deferred in absence of Mallya and the government lawyers to another day. The two-judge bench then listed the case for further hearing on July 14.
The government of India, through the ministries of home and external affairs, was expected in this to serve Mallya the contempt notice — issued through former AG Mukul Rohatgi at the banks’ insistence —and enforce his appearance.

UK: Heineken offers to sell 30 pubs as part of planned takeover of Punch Taverns
|
Dutch brewing giant Heineken is to serve up 30 pubs for sale as part of its planned takeover of Punch Taverns, the Telegraph reported on July 11.
The £403 mln deal is being investigated by competition authorities, which raised fears about a dampening of competition in 33 local areas if the acquisition went through unchallenged.
The Competition and Markets Authority said Heineken would need to offer a solution to prevent an in-depth phase 2 investigation which can last up to six months.
Now Heineken has identified 30 pubs which it has pledged to sell if its acquisition is given the go-ahead by the CMA.
Most of the pubs on the slate are in the north of England or Scotland with half being from Heineken’s own Star Pubs & Bars estate and the other half being from Punch’s.
The competition watchdog now has until August 22 to decide whether it is satisfied with the offer from Heineken but said it “has no material doubts” about the proposal which Heineken has put forward.
The CMA has the power to extend the deadline to October 17 though if it feels it needs time to give the offer extra scrutiny.
