A MATURED HOP EXTRACT AS MEDICINAL ELIXIR?

ABSTRACT
To conserve alpha and oil in hop pellets, we do everything we can - but maybe this is not always necessary, especially in regard to medicinal value! Studies have demonstrated that the consumption of iso-alpha acids helps to reduce obesity, and now these Japanese researchers have shown the same effect for oxidised bitter acids, e.g. humulinones, hulupones, and tricyclooxyisohumulones. In this study, hop pellets were stored at 60 degrees Celsius for two days and subsequently extracted for medicinal trials. They were able to show that the addition of 0.2% of this extract to a high fat diet induced fat burning leading to body fat reduction.

Brewery news USA, MT: Montana Governor signs bill expanding limit of small brewery production
Governor Steve Bullock visited a Missoula brewery on Monday, July 10 to sign House Bill 541, which will expand the limit of barrels produced by breweries from 10,000 to 60,000, KPAX-TV reported.

Bullock visited Bayern Brewery to sign the bill into law, which revises the definition of small brewery, increasing the number of barrels a brewery may produce to qualify as a small brewery and revises taxes imposed on production by brewers.

Bill co-sponsor Ellie Hill says bi-partisan support is the main reason this long-anticipated bill was passed.

"How did we finally do it? Well we finally got a Montana republican and a Montana democrat to work hand-in-hand on something that we both love equally as much," Hill said. "And that's making more money for Montana small businesses and brewing more Montana beer."

There are more than 68 breweries in 35 communities across the state that produce an estimated $100 million in economic output.

Brewery news USA, NY: Mikkeller Brewing’s new facility on the way in New York
For years Mikkeller Brewing, headed up by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, was a one of the world’s most venerable gypsy brewers. Meaning he didn’t have a brewery of his own to call home, the Beer Street Journal reported on July 7.

That all changed when Peter Zien, owner and founder of AleSmith Brewing, was expanding in San Diego and mentioned his old space a mile away was for sale. Bjergsø jumped at the chance, and Mikkeller Brewing San Diego was born.

Despite his brewery’s geographical proximity to California ballparks (especially the San Diego Padres), Mikkeller brewed two beers for Citi Field, home of the New York Mets this season. That move might make more sense now, as Mikkeller Brewing NYC is on the way.

Beer Street Journal is told the brewery will occupy a portion of the stadium that the Mets were using for ticket holder and fan hospitality near 126th Street and Right Field Gate. A 20-barrel brewhouse and around 60 taps will be found there.

The cost of construction and initial plans have not been disclosed. The build is expected to be completed in 2017.

Brewery news USA, GA: Slow Pour Brewing Company to become Gwinnett County’s first brewery
Gwinnett County’s first brewery is getting closer to opening. It’s just a question of when, Gwinnettdailypost.com reported on July 8.

If Lawrenceville-based Slow Pour Brewing Company co-owner John Reynolds has his way, it will be Sept. 1, a symbolic date when a new state law that lets breweries sell limited amounts of malt beverages directly to the public goes into effect. It also gives him, as the brew master, more time to work with the beer recipes and the brewery’s equipment before the doors open.

Others, such as Reynolds’ brother-in-law and Slow Pour co-owner Marty Mazzawi, are eyeing an even sooner opening.

“We’re getting close, but we’ve been saying that for a while,” Reynolds said. “We’re definitely ready to push the ball across the goal line, but we’ve got a few hurdles outstanding that we’re working through. Those hurdles, as they stand today, would be the city and the state liquor license, so we’re working with our attorney to get all of that stuff pushed through.

“We’re looking like that should be done in four weeks or so. As soon as we have those complete, we can start brewing beer.”

Slow Pour is the result of about two years of work by Reynolds and Mazzawi ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Modicum Brewing Company launches in Altoona
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday, July 7 at Modicum Brewing Company on the 3700 block of Spooner Ave., Altoona, Wisconsin, WEAU reported.

“I guess it’s been an adulthood dream to open a brewery,” Eric Rykal, the owner of Modicum Brewing Company, said to WEAU 13 News on July 7. “It's been a long road and a lot of sleepless nights, but we're really happy to finally have the doors open.”

Rykal, a Chippewa Falls native, has been making beer for other breweries in the area for past seven years. He said Modicum Brewing will have a revolving tap list of ten beers that will have “just a little tweak on the traditional brewery model.”

“We're going to try to brew some beers that no one else is really doing in the area,” he said. “Not really pushing boundaries or anything like that, but just trying to give something new to the area that no one has really done before.”

Brewery news Canada, NB: Hammond River Brewing opening new location in Rothesay
Hammond River Brewing has announced that its new and much-expanded location will be opening next week in Rothesay, New Brunswick, approximately 10 km from the original brewery in Quispamsis, Canadian Beer News reported.

Situated adjacent to the Barrel’s Head Gastropub at 141 Hampton Road, the new facility features a 15 barrel system – a big step up from the 1 barrel system at the old brewery – as well as a retail store, patio, and taproom with a food menu from the Barrel’s Head.

Beers expected to be available at opening by the glass and for growler fills include Gammie California Steam Ale, Hop Flash IPA, Blood Orange Hefeweizen, and Blueberry Ale.

The new Hammond River brewery and taproom will open on Monday July 10th.

Brewery news USA, NE: Ploughshare Brewing Co. to close down
Matt Stinchfield was a chemist before he became the award-winning head brewer and founder of Ploughshare Brewing Co., the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

On July 8, while driving across the country, in part to head to a consulting gig but mostly to clear his head, he distilled the reasons that his tap room at 1630 P St. was closing into a single calculation

"People are going to say, 'I was in there; the place was hopping,' but the answer is, it's a math problem, and the income was insufficient to manage the debt," Stinchfield said.

"The reality is, the cost of building a brewery is enormous. Our build-out was far over budget. We were building out at the same time that the Railyard was being constructed, and we had a terrible time getting contractors, and some of the contractors we had, we had to redo their work. So we had a huge debt to start with. We controlled our business expenses very frugally, so the only reason that the business wasn't open is that sales were less than expected."

Recently, Stinchfield announced to employees, investors and about a hundred loyal regulars that Ploughshare Brewing Co. was closing. The tap room’s doors have been shut ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: Heineken restructuring its Hungarian operations
Brewer Heineken Hungary’s manufacturing operations will cease at its Martfű plant in the next twelve months and the site will gradually be transformed into a distribution and logistics center, Hungarian online news portal index.hu reported on July 10.

At the same time, manufacturing capacity will be expanded in Sopron, and staff numbers will be increased further. Heineken told index.hu it was still unsure how many people would be affected from the Martfű staff of 50.

However, Heineken said it is committed to offer people alternative employment opportunities in Sopron or Martfű after the conversion, index.hu reported.

The current reorganization is part of a HUF 1.8 billion development in Hungary that the company started in 2015, index.hu recalled.

Brewery news Australia: Lion denies reports of planned closure of the Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Queensland
Lion has denied union claims that it is planning to end the production of XXXX in Queensland by closing the Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Milton, The Shout reported on July 12.

In an interview with AAP, United Voice coordinator Damien Davie said that management from Lion’s parent company, Kirin Holdings in Japan, had told staff in June that the Milton brewery would be shut down.

Davie said that workers at the plant had been threatened that if negotiations to bring in labour-hire, part-time and casual positions and scrap full-time jobs were unsuccessful then the plant would close.

“The continued push to bring in labour-hire employees and casualise the workforce is the main reason cited by management when threatening workers with closing the plant,” Davie told AAP.

However Lion has said that the claims are false and has pointed to on-going recruitment at the facility.

“These recent claims are false; we are actually hiring five more permanent people right now,” a Lion spokesperson said.

“There are no job losses. In fact, there will be pay offers on the table – on top of the best pay and work conditions in brewing in Queensland.”

The spokesperson said that the existing 24-year-old pay agreement that was in place at the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: UK’s Society of Independent Brewers calls for greater clarity over true craft beer
The UK’s Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has called for “greater clarity” over the true craft credentials of brewers, following a multitude of buyouts of previously independent craft brewers by multinational brewers, The Drinks Business reported on July 11.

As the craft beer category has grown, so too has interest in its brewers by large global companies eager to get a slice of its success. Most recently, London Fields Brewers was bought by Carlsberg in a deal worth £1 billion, following similar deals that saw AB InBev snap up Camden Town Brewery for £85 mln in 2015 and Japanese brewer Asahi acquire Meantime in 2016.

While the success of small brands growing into larger companies is commendable, it has led to increasing confusion over the term ‘craft’, with brands typically thought of as ‘craft’ due to their independent nature and small production sharing the term with huge global brewers.

“Buyouts such as that of London Fields by global beer company Carlsberg are made in the hope of capturing the original customers and target market of an established, previously independent craft beer brewery – Customer bases which were built on the back of the brewery being relatively small, independent and brewing quality, flavoursome beer,” ...More info on site

Brewery news Estonia: Craft brewers not planning to raise prices following excise hike
Estonia’s small breweries, with a market share of about one percent, are not planning to raise their prices following the entering into force of higher excise duties on beer.

While the large producers such as Saku and A. Le Coq are complaining about the excise hike and have noticeably raised the price of their products, plenty of smaller breweries are profiting from the situation, writes daily Postimees.

A great advantage is the fact that breweries that produce less than 600,000 litres of beer a year pay only half of the excise rate. This alone will allow them to keep their current prices, or raise them only marginally.

“We’re trying to compensate for the higher excise rate by producing more efficiently, and at the expense of the business’ profits. Here the production volume matters, which reduces the price per unit once it goes past a certain point,” Jaanis Tammela of the Tanker brewery told the paper.

Põhjala’s Enn Parel said the same, confirming that small producers can swallow the excise hike and make up for it by adjusting production.

CEO of A. Le Coq, Tarmo Noop, commented that the small producers actually had room to lower prices, seeing as the excise duties they paid were so ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Supreme Court defers case against Vijay Mallya
India’s Supreme Court on Monday, July 10 deferred hearing a case filed by banks seeking contempt action against Vijay Mallya, promoter of the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, for allegedly not making a full and fair disclosure of all his assets at home and abroad as ordered by the court, The Economic Times reported.

The top court had, at the previous hearing on May 9, asked Mallya to appear before it personally and explain. But he was absent when the court convened on July 10.

Lawyer for the banks, Robin Ratnakar David, suggested that the case be deferred in absence of Mallya and the government lawyers to another day. The two-judge bench then listed the case for further hearing on July 14.

The government of India, through the ministries of home and external affairs, was expected in this to serve Mallya the contempt notice — issued through former AG Mukul Rohatgi at the banks’ insistence —and enforce his appearance.

Mallya has previously expressed his reluctance to come to India for fear of being made an example over corporate defaults, even though others owe banks more than he does. He claims the losses were a result of business ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken offers to sell 30 pubs as part of planned takeover of Punch Taverns
Dutch brewing giant Heineken is to serve up 30 pubs for sale as part of its planned takeover of Punch Taverns, the Telegraph reported on July 11.

The £403 mln deal is being investigated by competition authorities, which raised fears about a dampening of competition in 33 local areas if the acquisition went through unchallenged.

The Competition and Markets Authority said Heineken would need to offer a solution to prevent an in-depth phase 2 investigation which can last up to six months.

Now Heineken has identified 30 pubs which it has pledged to sell if its acquisition is given the go-ahead by the CMA.

Most of the pubs on the slate are in the north of England or Scotland with half being from Heineken’s own Star Pubs & Bars estate and the other half being from Punch’s.

The competition watchdog now has until August 22 to decide whether it is satisfied with the offer from Heineken but said it “has no material doubts” about the proposal which Heineken has put forward.

The CMA has the power to extend the deadline to October 17 though if it feels it needs time to give the offer extra scrutiny.

Heineken, whose Star Pubs business has approximately 1,100 sites is buying ...More info on site
